Audioengine B1 Premium universal Bluetooth&reg; music receiver with extended range

I have the device connected into an old receiver, but no sound is coming out of the subwoofer. Just my 2 speakers, unlike when I use the turntable I get sound through the subwoofer as well. What am I doing wrong?

The Audioengine B1 can connect to only one device at a time, however it will remember up to six devices. The B1 automatically powers down and mutes the output after approximately 10 minutes. The BT input, however, is still active so you can just pair to it again without pressing the front-panel button. B1 will remain on if a device is paired with it and turned on. When switching devices that are currently playing you may need to switch off Bluetooth on those devices, then start playback with your newly connected device.

Can the Audioengine B1 optical output be connected to my home theater and the RCA output be connected to my whole house audio at the same time? Can both output at the same time or only 1 at a time?

Can I have multiple units for more than one system but all using the same smartphone (not at the same time) - will Bluetooth connection distinguish if there are 2 or even 3 units?

Greetings Chris. Thank you for your question. Bluetooth does take some bits of information to reduce the file size. Some versions remove more, some versions less. As far as a Bluetooth receiving device, the B1 is a version 5, and supports aptX, and AAC. I use Tidal as well, and with an older version Bluetooth with very good results.

I would be hooking this up to a vintage receiver and have a Teac TN-280-BT turntable in a room adjacent. Would I be able to connect the turntable via Bluetooth?

Greetings Brian. Thank you for your question. Bluetooth is point A to point B. One to one in most cases. The cases where you can have multiple point B's is done with an app developed by the manufacture of Bluetooth speakers. The B1 is not a repeater it will only take a signal in from your phones. There are other solutions for your project, like music streamers that use your home network instead of Bluetooth. They can be all grouped together to play the same audio in multiple rooms.

Is the device always on or does it wake up when streaming signal is sent? Iâ??m in a wheelchair and prefer not to have to always get into my chair to go into another room to turn it on.

This Audioengine B1 works great with any unit that has an available RCA input, Uri! Looking at your Onkyo A-RV401's rear panel you have a tape input or a VCR input for RCA analog audio that can be used for the B1 (if you do not have gear already connected to them).

If you are simply looking to add an Audioengine B1 Bluetooth adapter via an available analog RCA input or 3.5mm AUX input you can, provided your Bose gear has those inputs. This would allow you to connect a non-Bluetooth device to a smart Bluetooth source. If you are looking to create groups of speaker devices (multiple Bose speakers OR other gear with traditional RCA inputs) you could also consider using the Audioengine B-fi in the link below. Devices that can transmit audio through Bluetooth typically have their own volume control and as long as your Bluetooth audio source (i.e. smartphone, tablet, portable music player, etc..) has a volume control, then this setup will work without needing a receiver or a preamp

It will take audio wirelessly from your phone, tablet, or PC if equipped with Bluetooth, and input that audio into a receiver, amplifier, or powered speakers when neither has Bluetooth built in. Its like adding Bluetooth to an old stereo receiver. if you did find a Bluetooth transmitter, it will usually transmit to one Bluetooth speaker.

It does not contain a battery. Works perfectly when plugged into an aux power plug if available on your stereo receiver. It will go to sleep if it's left powered on, requiring you to wake it up by pressing the button on the front.

Hello, when my stereo is powered down will this receiver still connect to my phone? I had a real problem with another bluetooth receiver in regards to this issue. Stereo was off, auto reconnects to my phone, resulting in incoming calls or messages going silent.

No, bluetooth is a one to one pairing. You cannot pair one bluetooth source to multi bluetooth devices.

How does it sound using an iPhone to Bluetooth? The Bluetooth receiver I have now sounds lousy. I know iPhone does not have apt-x.

I also have an old receiver in my basement, and I use it to drive some Klipsch outdoor speakers on my patio. It works great for me, but I have a walk out basement and the signal from the cell phone (mine is an Android, but it should not make any difference) is good enough through the walls to where we sit about 40-50 feet away. If your basement is below grade, you might still be able to do it if you use an extended cable from the Audioengine B1 to the receiver and put the device up close to the floor joists or an outside window that is close to your patio. The Audioengine B1 should be able to pick up your phone's transmissions from the next floor up, as long as you are not too far away. There is a limit to everything! Good luck!

It should work fine as long as you're in range of the device. I've never really test the actual range but I've never had problems walking around my 1/3 acre yard holding my phone while the music is playing inside.

I have been using this for a while. From my iphone 8 with spotify set on the highest quality setting, which is MP3 320 kbs, the sound is good. It is still MP3 but good. For most people this quality will be good enough. Being an audiophile it is not as good as a cd or vinyl on my system but the convenience factor is good. For me I am glad I have this device for a convenient way to connect my iphone to my system and would recommend this product.

I have used various sources. My Sony Walkman NWA40 is the primary source...CD quality. I have used the iPhone and iPad to send various music to this unit. The bandwidth on the iPhone/Apple products while acceptable is not audiophile quality. So much depends on the equipment you are attaching this Bluetooth receiver to play through. If it is a high quality component sound system, you will hear the difference when playing a station/music through your iPhone...it just does not have the depth that a DAC or Lossless audio provides. It will be acceptable and clear but limited in dynamic range.

Yes - this is how I use it. I have a cheap Echo dot in my kitchen. I hooked up the AudioEngine device to my Denon home stereo system in the family room, which is not Bluetooth capable. Paired the AudioEngine in my Echo account. In the kitchen, I just say "Alexa - connect to Bluetooth device", and it connects. You can disconnect at will by telling Alexa to disconnect from Bluetooth device. That way, when the home stereo is off, you can still hear the Echo dot in the kitchen.

Since it's powered by a 5V usb input, could I use this in a vehicle based reciever-less system? Basically use a 12 volt to 5 volt adapter that's connected to a switched source for power then run the RCAs directly to an aftermarket amp bypassing any radio receiver and only using my tablet to stream through this device?

Theoretically, if you can connect your Alexa enabled device via Bluetooth to the Audioengine B1, the Alexa enabled device would provide the output to the Audioengine B1. The Audioengine B1 is a receiver of Bluetooth information sent by a device...it, in turn, is connected--for example via RCA jacks--to your sound system. The Audioengine does not provide Alexa...it is merely a receiver...you would have to provide the Alexa enabled device...which would provide the source of audio information.

Will this work with a McIntosh 252 intergrated amp ?

The answer is yes. I use mine between an auxiliary input on my studio receiver and a single M-Audio BX8A studio monitor I have in my speed shop. I use it to create a true live concert PA system sound by changing the accessibility audio settings on my phone to mono sound and setting the balance to all left or right. It doesn't matter where you are indoors or outdoors as all the sound comes from the one monitor and it sounds amazing! Being able to control the tracks and volume from my phone is cool. Also the sound of the unit does improve as described in the manual during the break-in period. Enjoy.

While we have not tested the B1 in a car environment, I agree with Dennis that if you can provide it proper power through its USB cable/input, then it should work. We offer adapters made for the vehicle that even provide the 12V trigger that some amps need to turn on to play. Can this be used to connect a Definative technology Studio W sound bar to a Denon S 750h AVR?

I am not familiar with that particular integrated amp, but the Audioengine website states that it can be connected to any audio product with a standard analog audio input. Mine is connected to a Marantz integrated amp which is not at the same level as the McIntosh, but it works perfectly. I am delighted with the sound quality of music when I stream music from my Tidal HiFi subscription service.

Your MA252 McIntosh has two unbalanced inputs on the back. The Audio Engine comes with RCA plugs. You could chose unbalanced 1 or 2 and plug into those...left and right. The Audio Engine is a Bluetooth receiver. You would be able to connect any Bluetooth capable device (Sony Walkman HD, iPhone, etc). I am not sure that the audio engine B1 would have the bandwidth you are expecting as Bluetooth is limited. I am running mine through a McIntosh C27 preamp and McIntosh 7270 amp using a Sony DAC Walkman. The sound is equal to a CD using a top end player. It is not equal to the type of sound from vinyl or Lossless sound; however, to my ears (and they are old) it sounds great.

Yes. It should. The B1 has RCA analogue outputs and comes with rca cables and you could connect it to an RCA in to your amp such as a cd or aux in via rca cable. It also has an optical digital output so if your amp has an optical digital input you could connect it this way too.

Yes. It has a line out which can connect to the line in to powered speakers. It is a fantastic, well-made, high fidelity product. The audio quality is better than using a direct wired in to my receiver since it takes high-quality audio signal via latest blue tooth technology. And you get remote volume control as an extra benefit by using the volume control on the device such as you phone.

I would think that you could although you would need a cord that transfers the signal from the 2 RCA outlets on the B1 to a mini plug. Don't know what impact that might have on sound quality. Have been using mine for a couple years and am impressed with the sound quality.

You have two choices. It will connect to either a digital optical (toslink) or left/right analog RCA inputs. I guess it depends on your preference or what you have open. I think it will connect to most anything. I connected mine to a 2006 Yamaha RX-397 stereo receiver through the RCA aux audio inputs. It's simple to use, sounds very good, and has no problem picking up the signal even from the opposite corner of the house.

You have 2 options: you can use the RCA connectors that come with the Audioengine and plug it into one of your Audio RCA (L/R white/red) inputs. Maybe the MD/Tape In (play) plugs? The other option is to purchase an optical cable (Toslink) and connect that from the Audioengine into one of your optical digital inputs - maybe input 5 labeled BD/HD-DVD since it's unlikely you're using those inputs.

Using RCA jacks from the Audio Engine to any input to your receiver-just not the phono input-just select that input to hear what you are playing (like your Walkman or iPhone etc. )-I hooked it up to an older Marantz integrated amp through Aux1-no problem as it is like connecting a CD player. It should let you connect to any device with bluetooth capability. I use an iPhone 7 and an iPad to stream music through an older Pioneer receiver. I used the optical output for the connection. It sounds great and the bluetooth range is excellent. Hope this helps.

If the Bluetooth music source (like an iPhone) allows the volume to be controlled - which is likely - then you will be able to control the volume by simply turning down the volume on the iPhone. But you also need to be aware of the distance between the Bluetooth device and the B1. I'm probably 20-25 feet away when I am on my deck and I can reliably stream to the B1 which is sitting in a closet with my receiver. If your distance is longer - or if you have obstacles between your Blouetooth source and the B1, your results may not be as good.

Probably not, it functions more like a pre-amp. Not enough power for most wired speakers unless they are very small. You could run sound to Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

Yes, Bluetooth 5.0 is backwards compatible with devices that feature Bluetooth 4.2 and earlier. Can confirm a Mid-2013 Macbook Air with Bluetooth 4.0 connects to the Audioengine B1 without issue.

It is quite simple and for me I would miss this big if I would no longer have it. I've hooked up three systems all through standard music or multimedia amps to traditionally wired speakers. When connected you control the sound on your amp just as you would if it were a CD player or tuner. I would hook it up to any of those you mention but would shy away from the "phono" input. Use the RCA cables supplied with this device to plug in to the amp at the "CD" inputs for instance to the back of the amp just as if it were a CD player. Plug the B1's power cited into a 120v outlet at your wall or at the amp. Follow the simple instructions supplied with the B1and it's done quick and easy. This is the perfect unit in my perspective in that it's sound quality is better than less expensive models and to increase the quality from this point it takes too much extra dollars. You'll get it without issue I bet and love it. I listen mostly to jazz and classical along with eclectic mixes of blues and rock and the quality is real good.

The B1 has Left and Right out RCA jacks, and an optical out. With the input choices that you have I would probably just run 2 RCA cables into one of the tape inputs and get ready to love your music all over again. I'm not saying that's the only way to hook it up, but that would be easy and the cables are included with the B1. Hope that helps.

Just connect the two RCA jacks on the back of the Audioengine to CD on your receiver. I use an iPhone and it works great. If you connect a different BlueTooth device then want to go back to using your iPhone you would need to un-install the connection on your iPhone then re-install it again.

If your mixer accepts RCA or digital audio connectors, it should. I send signal from a tablet to the Audioengine and from there to my receiver. Going to your mixer first should be the same.

Yes, Bluetooth from iPhone and then this will connect into your audio device. Connections can be a little buggy if you're switching between different phones in your family. But you'll get a hang of it. Sound quality (if connecting to a good audio setup) and range is outstanding.

By using the digital out/Toslink, you are 'keeping it digital' and bypassing the AE B1's DAC, correct? In other words if i have a DAC that i want to use, is that how i would want to connect it? Or is this too much product for my needs? Thank you!

My receiver is inside the house and my speakers are mounted to the wall outside. I would be about 30-40 away on the opposite side of the wall from the adapter. Will this device still be in range of my phone?

That is correct and have read feedback of others doing that, if you have a preferred DAC of your own. The B! has an excellent DAC built in also, but it's your preference. Also, some receivers may have built in DAC for the Toslink inputs. I have run optical Toslink from a TV directly into the optical inputs of a Denon receiver with no DAC in between. Check your manual.

Can the adioengine B1 connect to 2 different Bluetooth speakers simultaneous?

This is a very vague question. The dynamics of your receiver, what type of wall, the quality of your speakers. I reside in a condo and there are solid concrete walls; sometimes I get a break in the signal but it's only for a few seconds. The type of speakers and its frequency response. Your speakers are your weakest link for your signal. My adapter I simply love thanks to Garrett ... the genius. I have a Denon receiver with Kef speakers working from my iPhone XR. As far as your signal that also depends on your source which is your phone , your amp, through the adapter, finally to your speakers. Hopefully this info is of some help. ??

My Audioengine B1-connected to my receiver on the 1st floor - receives an uninterrupted signal from my iPhone from the opposite end of my basement- about 50 feet away. I would think the B1 would work in your circumstances. I've been very pleased with my purchase and the performance of the B1.

I have a 1960's console stereo. I don't see an aux input. The only inputs I've detected are for headphones and external speakers. Could this product work with this older console?

Hello, I never tried it. I'm sure is possible. There is a left left and right rca connection on the back of the unit, so if you add a two to one connector to the Jacks im sure it would work. I use this all the time to play all my digital music on my vintage Dynaco stereo. I love it

Alan, I use the Audioengine B1as a Bluetooth receiver which is plugged into my stereo which has several rooms of hardwired speakers. Perhaps a Crutchfield Tech can aanswer your particular question.

I have Denon AVR-888 receiver for my my 5.1 home AV system. It is a 1999 receiver. Is the Audioengine-B1 compatible with this receiver? Thx

The pairing process is as follows. I turn on Bluetooth, for example on my smartphone, and "Audioengine B1" appears in a list of paired devices. I select it and the phone is connected immediately. The process is very consistent and nearly instantaneous but there is no provision that I can see to name the receiver and apply a password.

Andrew I have this device connected to a NAD 388. The pairing process happens by depressingi the white light button on the front of the Audioengine and release and it should blink. This pairing mode. Check your phone, tablet or computer and Audioengine should appear in the Bluetooth section. Select the device to pair when it appears and the device should show as connected. The Audioengine hasn't shown me a password.Hope that helps

It should be, as it connects via two standard RCA phono plugs; I have it connected directly to my Rega Elex-R amplifier (along with my Denon 3910, which I use only for audio/SACD), and it works beautifully.

Absolutely it's compatible. As long as you have a spare audio input (aux, tape, etc) or a spare digital input (optical). Just run the cable from the Audioengine B1 to your receiver's input and you're ready to go.

Your receiver seems to be a 5.1 system, which means five separate audio channels plus subwoofer. The Audioengine B-1 is stereo, which means two channels: right and left. You could use it with your receiver but you will not get five-channel surround sound, you will get two-channel stereo.

Hi Thomas. The audioengine B1 is compatible in that it will work with your Denon. I use it with a JVC from the 1990s. But it is just a stereo Bluetooth device. It works the same just like a stereo cassette or FM stereo broadcast would work with your receiver. By itself the audio engine does not have any multiple Channel, or special encoding,. It's just stereo and your receiver will distributed amongst the five speakers anyway that it chooses to. As far as THX goes, I don't know the answer.

Hi, I am not sure I understand your question. The Audioengine B1 is connected to the input such as AUX on your receiver. It needs to receive a Bluetooth signal from a source. For example I use my iPad to get programming from the internet. The Audioengine then picks up what I have chosen and feeds it to the receiver. Your Bluetooth headphones would link directly to the iPad. I do not think the Audioengine would be involved.

I don't think so. This device is a receiver, not a transmitter. It's purpose is to connect, via bluetooth, a source of music, such as your smartphone or a tablet, to your hifi system.

I do not know, but I think not. The audioengine B1 is a Bluetooth receiver , not transmitter . Your wireless Bluetooth headphones should have a receiver built into it to receive signals from your smartphone or whatever. If you instruct your smartphone to connect to your wireless headphones you should be able to hear Pandora Etc music . The audioengine B1 is also a receiver and when you instruct your smartphone to connect to it it receives the Pandora music and plugs it into your vintage receiver by way of RCA pin plug cables , so you can hear it on speakers . If you plug ordinary headphones into your receiver you can hear the music through those headphones. To get music from your vintage receiver to your Bluetooth headphones I think you need a audio to digital converter that also transmits Bluetooth and hook that to your receiver. Hope this helps. I do not own Bluetooth headphones so I cannot test for you.

Is there ANY latency with this unit?

This is a receive only device - we use it with a Mp3 player (iPod, iPhone, Samsung phone) sending a Bluetooth audio file to a amplifier input is how I use it. It does work great we get over 75 feet distance to our built in home stereo speaker system.

Yes, unfortunately, there is. You will notice a difference between video on computer and audio. But, if you're just looking to connect to a good set of older speakers and don't care about syncing with laptop (i.e., video), then it works great. Good luck.

If I'm playing 16/44.1 AAC encoded music, will the iPhone stream it directly (i.e. bit perfect) to the B1 using A2DP/AAC without re-encoding it with a different bit rate?

This unit is designed for home use, and I don't know of anyone using one in a vehicle. Technically it should be possible, but you will still need to provide power to the unit.
