Excellent little speakers, very clear and crisp sound. Limited bass so I ordered an Audioengine subwoofer which will make a huge difference. Headphone jack is a nice feature and volume control very easy to reach. Appearance is very classy and speakers fit nicely on my desk. Highly recommended

Fantastic office speakers
Todd from Cleveland, OH on 2/8/2025
Having these speakers on my desk has made my work environment much better -- on par with getting a fancy ergonomic chair or a nice window view. In my small office the sound is spacious and detailed at lower volumes, not muddy or distractingly bass heavy. I also appreciate the headphone out, which I use regularly when other people are around. Mostly playing FLACs on a PC, connecting to these speakers with the USB; upgraded to these from pretty good but old Harmon Kardon speakers.
Pros: Beautiful, spacious sound in an office setting.
Cons: Headphone out is quiet with 60 ohm headphones so remember to dial back the volume before unplugging.

Delightful little speakers with crisp, clear sound with punch. I use these at my home office for a wide range of music from Chopin to Louis Armstrong to the Stones and the Talking Heads. They fit my mood and make my workday far more pleasant. They are also a nice compact size that works on a desk. I have them on a Kanto SE2 stand which is also quite nice.

A surprisingly big sound from two cute little speakers (in mahogany). Until now I had the audio output of my iMac connected to an old Koss radio. While it did not give me appreciably more detail and range, it did give me a much warmer sound. With the Audioengine HD3, I get a wider range and more detail that even becomes sweet when appropriate.

Bought for Dad. He loves their small size and big sound
Crutchfield customer from Garden Grove, CA on 11/12/2024
I bought these for my dad, so he could get better sound than the tinny built-in speakers that came with the 24" flatscreen that he has in his 10 foot by 8 foot office/TV room. He loves them. It took about 20 minutes for us to set the speakers up b/c the RCA cables didn't work with his TV for some reason. We plugged them in, but no sound came out. Only after we plugged in the headphone connection (which came with the speakers) to the back of his TV did sound come out of the Audioengines. But boy, was that sound great. I've read about the 'soundstage' of these speakers, but didn't understand what that meant until I heard the speakers myself. Dad and I were watching some classical music concert on PBS while setting up the speakers. Once the TV's audio came out of the Audioengine HD3s, the vocals became crystal clear, I could instruments playing that I didn't hear just seconds before, and the mid range blossomed with richness. The speakers could use a subwoofer to really provide bass, but the Audioengine HD3s fleshed out the lower ranges so much more then the TV's speakers did that my Dad doesn't care. He said he's happy without a subwoofer. Oh, and these speakers are so small that my messy Dad didn't even have to move much of his stuff to fit them on the table upon which the TV (and printer and laptop and random papers) sits. I bought a walnut-colored pair for myself, too, and I'll review those separately.
Pros: Great mid range, great upper range, small size, easy setup, handsome speakers.
Cons: Could use more bass, but that's what subwoofers are for.

Wild set of small speakers!
Todd from Scotch Plains, NJ on 7/24/2024
From the second I turned them on I was impressed. Big sound considering their size. Perfect for my upstairs home office setup. Running a FiiO R7 into them via the RCA inputs as my main source but for fun I also sent a Bluetooth signal to them from a portable We Are Rewind Cassette Player. Controlling it all via Roon on my laptop with a Roon Nucleus setup in my basement. These are made for listening at the distance of a desk and not to fill a room. Perfect to that end. First Audioengine product I've purchased and would definitely buy from them again. For my purposes I don't need a sub. Still have more break in time to go too so they should only get better.
Pros: Size, sound, analog inputs, magnetic grills.
Cons: None so far.

Audioengine HD3
Isaiah from LONG BEACH, CA on 4/13/2024
The key performance of the HD3's lie in the sound stage, the separation of instruments, and clear vocals. Seriously these speakers make you feel at center stage, it's amazing. I use these speakers connected through USB on my MacBook air, streaming through Tidal. I would buy these again and again. Also the bluetooth connects instantly and the playback quality via bluetooth is exceptionally great. If you got the money don't pass on these. They're worth it. I purchased them on Crutchfield 2 months ago and was able to buy them using a payment plan which was very helpful.
Pros: Sound Stage, Connectivity, Audio Playback

Much better than expected
Robert from TRUMBULL, CT on 3/2/2024
I am very happy with these speakers. I had very limited space on my desk and these were literally perfect with half an inch to spare. Paired with a Klipsch subwoofer I had, they sound absolutely amazing. I thought the switch on the back to limit the bass and focus on meds and highs was genius. The only complaint I have is the lack of quality control. The right (passive) speaker's logo is upside down. The speakers sound great, so I don't particularly care, just thought it was funny more than anything.

Horrible quality and sound
Guest from SF Bay Area, CA on 12/19/2023
Worst speakers ever, they sound great but only when working. For reference. I have connected these to my TV, Surface pro, Dell PC, macbook pro, and Macbook air either with or without a docking station and each has had the same problem, HIGH PITCH FREQUENCY or speakers not playing . Its sometime random, but most of the time you cannot go 1 hour without these making a high pitch almost dog whistle type noise when connected to any Apple product, the same goes for Microsoft but with no sound. If you pause a video and come back later it will create this noise and/or not produce sound and turning them off after every use doesn't work either. Very disappointed from a brand that is very highly praised on most forums. I have gone through the 40 hours of break in period that was mentioned in the manual but so far, zip. The only remedy right now is to turn off and back on but sometimes it takes 3-4 times for that to work. Id rather throw these out than donate to goodwill or a friend, and I would not recommend this product unless you can get it exchanged or return for another set and see if that makes a difference before the warranty expires. Otherwise, stick with Kanto Yu2 or similar. I'm sure the good reviews are accurate but it sucks to get stuck with a bad set. When they do work they're great, but thats rarely the case unfortunately.

Great audiophile grade speaker
John from Prior Lake, MN on 7/19/2023
It is a perfect size for the desktop setup in my office. Easy setup. The instructions are well written and easy to do. Very good quality and workmanship. The sound is very good clear mids and highs , natural sound bass. Not muddy bass. An articulate sounding speaker. A very good sounding speaker even without aa subwoofer. But... A week later I added the Audioengine S6 subwoofer. As good as the HD3 sounded. The S6 really rounded it out. You cannot ask for more at this price point and size.
Pros: easy setup very good sound
Cons: none I can think of.

Great Desktop Speakers

They actually fit on the desk and sound great. I am using the Audioengine DS1 for the A2+, these fit well on them and helps get the most from the sound. Enough low end for me to enjoy music and video games, but these things are tiny, they aren't gonna reach low. The switch on the back is a huge addition, would be easy to add a sub for all the low end you need.
Pros: Size Clarity More Bass than Expected Reasonable Price
Cons: No physics breaking levels of bass

Great Speakers for Home Office
Kenneth from Granite Bay, CA on 6/6/2023
I was torn between the Kantos YU2 and the HD3 speakers for my home office setup. Ultimately, I went with the HD3's due to the better low-end response, front volume control and bluetooth connectivity. After having listened to them for a couple of weeks, I am very happy with my purchase. They have enough base for my intended use and offer up nice fidelity across the audio spectrum. Wether you listen to podcasts, rock, jazz or classical music, you will not be disappointed with the sound from this speaker pair.

Audioengine HD3
AJ from Seattle, WA on 3/14/2023
Upgraded the computer speakers on my desk to these. They look great and sound great. I can and have listened to them for hours on end. Additionally, the headphone amp also drives my Sennheiser Momentum 2 cans (which honestly don't need much) very well. I also set them up temporarily in the bedroom. For this purpose I really appreciate that the LED for Bluetooth is a *faint* white; doesn't disturb me when I turn off the lights to sleep. I do wish these supported Bluetooth multipoint, as I have to remember to disconnect from one source before I can connect to another. I wish I had space for the HD4s, but these do quite well. My first Audioengine set and I only regret I didn't try these out sooner.
Pros: sound great at low and medium volume not fatiguing at all Bluetooth LED not overly bright
Cons: no Bluetooth multipoint

Nice sound
Leroy from Jackson, MS on 2/22/2023
Just got the HD3's today. Setup is simple, and even though they have yet to go through the break in process the sound is good. The treble has a nice soft roll off at the high end, and the midrange is okay but I expect it will get better. I'm not going to talk about bass because if that's important you'll be getting a sub to go with these. The only hiccup is there's a bit of background noise. It sounds like clicking. The sound is really low, and it's really only noticeable between songs. I hope I can update this review after the break in period. Just for reference I'm running these with my Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, and FiiO music player.
Pros: Sound, multiple connection options, price for the quality
Cons: Odd background sound

A nice product to replace my crazy tower speaker.
David from Annandale, VA on 8/31/2022
Just a nice product! Well packaged with the right cords for each application and nice protective travel bags. Good setup manual. Handy volume control and headphone jack with a great sugnal out. I like having the option to run them off my sound card (either USB or miniplug simple plugin inputs) instead of using inferior Bluetooth signal with its complicated setup. Soundwise they are great: I like them with the equalization raised for bass and treble ranges. They will replace my uncooperative battery powered mini tower unit for all indoor uses: it's worth it to find another socket.
Pros: Simple connection to full frequency inputs, handy volume control knob and headphone jack with outstanding signal, and lbnl great sound reproduction. Free utility bags facilitate bringing speakers along as yiur travel speakers.
Cons: Minor. The unit is not battery powered and must be plugged into house current.

Nice speakers for my computer setup.
Rpbert from Hewitt, TX on 4/7/2022
I needed to replace my old computer speaker system (2.1) and the Audioengine HD3 seemed to fit the need. My desktop space is limited so the size of the HD3's was important. The built-in DAC was also attractive to me. The sound stage is good. The overall balance is good. Since my old system had a sub, the HD3 seems lacking in the low end, so, I'll be adding a sub in the near future. Hook up was simple. Plugged the USB cord from the speakers into a USB port on my computer and Windows 10 recognized it right away. Considering the cost of the HD3's and adding a sub, the overall cost will be more than I originally intended to spend. But, the performace will be satisfying.
Pros: Build quality, smooth sound, balanced sound
Cons: Bass is rather thin.

Exactly what I was looking for!
Jay from Crownsville, MD on 3/16/2022
Working at my desk for 40 hours a week, I wanted to find a solution for great sound quality and near-field listening with multiple Bluetooth devices being an Android phone, iPad and laptop. It had to be small enough to fit on the shelf above my desk and still deliver clean, strong performance and not cost an arm or a leg. And for these needs, the Audioengine HD3's really deliver! I was blown away at the clarity and near-field imaging from such small speakers. I did go back and purchased a sub to fill in the bottom end but even without the sub I was extremely pleased by the performance. I fully expected the need to buy a sub for the full spectrum of sound and I was worried that the 10" Jamo sub might overpower the HD3's and muddy the music, but the gain control allowed me to tame it down to find the right blend and the star of this set up is still the clarity from the HD3's. I'm super satisfied with these speakers, especially for the price. Now for a minor issue, beside the need to add a sub, the cables are great but the banana plug connectors are long and protrude about 3" from the back which i did not account for in the measurements for my shelf. They also call attention to the cables which I usually try to hide. So I had to buy 90 degree adapters to angle the cables downward allowing them to fit on my shelf. But that may not be an issue for others and was easily fixed.
Pros: Beautiful sound quality and near-field imaging considering their size and price point.
Cons: Still requires a sub to fill in the bottom end.

Cons: Bass could be a bit beefier.

Unusable with a powered sub
Crutchfield customer from Atlanta, GA on 12/31/2021
Unfortunately the variable line output on the HD3 is so weak (relative to the output of the speakers themselves) that it is unusable with a standard powered subwoofer. The signal level is so weak that it wouldn't even signal my sub to turn on, even at its most sensitive turn-on setting. With auto-on turned off, I had to crank my sub to the maximum volume to even begin blending it. I contacted both Crutchfield and Audioengine support, and both confirmed that the line output signal level could not be increased. It might work with an Audioengine sub, but it's line output signal is too weak to be used with other standard powered subwoofers.
Pros: -Great finish and build quality -Front volume knob -USB input
Cons: -worthless subwoofer output -too small to make bass on its own

Amazing sound
Crutchfield customer from Gilbert, AZ on 1/24/2021
Amazing sound. I got these to be used for my desktop PC, I currently have them connected through USB and everything works perfectly. It's also nice to have the Bluetooth feature so I can stream music from my phone. No issues with the Bluetooth connection either. I'm not an audiophile, so I have a hard time describing exactly how the sound is better than lower cost speakers. All I can say is that you have to listen to them to believe it. I am hearing parts of songs that I've listened to several times before with cheaper speakers and I notice sounds that I didn't before. The music is so full and immersive, and sounds great whether you have the volume low or high. I'm thinking about getting a subwoofer but sometimes I wonder if I even need it because the base is pretty full with these. The lack of a power button is one downside I think, but I contacted Audioengine and they assure these are designed to stay on all the time so no need to readjust the volume every time after turning it off and on. Also, I was planning to mount these to the wall by my computer monitor but despite a PDF manual that I found online saying it has threaded inserts, the speakers do not. They were removed because people were damaging the speakers. Apparently also the paper manual I received with the speakers was printed before they removed the inserts, and the PDF manual I found online was out of date too. I still love the speakers and plan to keep them though.
Pros: - rich, immersive sound - decent bass - USB connection for PC, Bluetooth connection as well
Cons: - no power button; the speakers can be turned off but you have to turn the volume all the way down to do it - no threaded inserts for mounting despite the manual stating they do

No Bass Whatsoever
Kyle from Crofton, MD on 1/5/2021
I am so surprised by all of these reviews. Such positivity! There is absolutely no bass to these things at all. Definitely lacking a well rounded sound. Pairing them with a sub is a must. I have a powered subwoofer that I plugged in and for some reason I have to have it turned all the way up (maxed out) to even hear the slightest bit of bass. However when I used the sub with my Bose speakers and receiver it would shake the house. So I'm not sure what the issue is here but the bass is basically non existent. Wish it was more of a full sound which I was expecting based off all these reviews. Overall, disappointed but I'll keep them because they were a gift and I hate returning items.
Pros: small, look great
Cons: no bass, and even when connected to a subwoofer they hardly produce enough power to get anything out of it.

Good speaker for desktop
GSR from AUSTIN, TX on 11/20/2020
Bought this speaker for my study room and have it paired along with a Jamo S 808 Sub. These are one of the best near field speakers you can get. I debated between A2+ and the HD3. Decided to get the HD3 since it has the switch to reduce bass (frequency below 100Hz are cut off). None of the other speakers had this option including the Kanto models. I wish it had a optical input as well so that I can use my old apple TV for airplay.
Pros: 1. "reduce bass" switch. 2. USB input 3. Volume knob upfront 4. No remote needed to switch inputs
Cons: 1. Bluetooth does not have a switch off button. The speakers stays in pairing mode for a long time and then switches off. 2. The higher frequencies are somewhat subtle. Not like Klipsch clarity *may be its a good thing.... I dont know.

Great design, but lacks dynamic range.
Jesus from DALLAS, TX on 1/31/2020
I really wanted to like these speakers for my home office, but the sound lacks dynamic range and sounds small IMO. I understand a flat sound, and prefer it over an overly colored sound, but these have no excitement, the upper frequency range have no "crisp". These will be returned as they did not meet my expectations. These will be replaced with a set of Martin Logan bookshelf speakers and a Marantz amp, I was trying to avoid this and save some money, but didn't work out for me.
Pros: Design, gloss white.
Cons: No dynamic range.

Pros: Size, connectivity options, sound, and build quality are great.
Cons: None.

Moved to tears
Crutchfield customer from Burlington, MA on 12/12/2019
I heard sounds in my favorites songs that I had never heard before. Wow.
Pros: Very flexible between bluetooth, USB and 3.5mm jack. I like the options of adding a subwoofer. Easy setup Great sound Integrated volume and power make it easy to turn off and save electricity.
Cons: The 5 foot cables provided were not long enough for my setup. The speakers are a bit wide to use with standing dual monitors. I may buy monitor arms because of this.

Have a pair on my work desk connected to my iMac streaming Amazon Music HD - 24 bit/48kHz. Extremely high sound quality. Sounds like listening to a very expensive High Fidelity analog system. I am extremely pleased with these speakers!

These speakers are as good as advertised.
Crutchfield customer from Glenmont, NY on 8/21/2019
These speakers are as good as advertised. Using the HD3s with my Mac. Simple needs such as easy access to a headphone jack, volume control up front, reasonably good DAC, and more are met, making the HD3 a good buy. Sound is excellent. In particular, the base does not seem to be tuned in such a way that makes the HD3 sound boomy.
Pros: Simple needs met, no boomy base.
Cons: none

Hits lots of sweet spots!
Jeff from Nacogdoches, TX on 4/1/2019
I really enjoy these desktop speakers. Given all the competition for computer speakers, I think these HD3's hit a very sweet spot and fit the "just right" catagory. I have a cramped space that limited my size options greatly, but I did want something that sounds nice for Tidal music and Youtube listening as well. These sound very warm, put out a nice punchy impact when I turn them up a little, and they also sound clear and vivid. Besides sound quality and size, they have just the right mix of versatility and ease of function. I have them plugged in via USB, and I know the built-in DAC does a much better job at processing the signal than the soundcard in the computer that I am bypassing. Futhermore, I REALLY appreciate the headphone amp, and even the nice rotary volume knob on the front. Last but not least, I will say they look very cool. I got the black ones, and sometimes I leave the grills off, and other times I leave them on for a nice retro look. Kinda oldschool. (I bet the wood colored ones hit that mark even better.) They are not cheap, but I think they are very much worth the price given their looks, features, size, and most importantly, great near-field sound. PS- (BTW, I did buy an Elac sub to add bottom end to the sound. Highly recommended, in my opinion....but not in such a way that one would think I am knocking the stand alone sound these speakers make. I am not. This is strictly an optional add-on.)
Pros: Great sound. Great size. Great versatility. Great looks.
Cons: I can't come up with one!

Received these speakers a week ago so haven't had them for a long time. I have them connect via Bluetooth to an iMac and with RCA cables to a DVD player. Have not used the USB connection. The speakers are solid and well made. The cables supplied are adequate in length for my use. The connection to the iMac went smoothly and quickly - same with connecting to an iPad. As mentioned elsewhere, you can only have one Bluetooth connection active at a time. Of course, the RCA connections worked well - did have to supply my own RCA cables. The sound is very good for a speaker of this size but is well balanced and smooth with no emphasis anywhere in the range. The bass is adequate but not overwhelming and with no additional bass emphasis. The headphone jack works well - using it with Sennheiser HD579 and HD598 headphones (depends on the music). I chose this model because of the headphone jack. Very satisfied so far.
Pros: Easy connectivity Small size, Sound quality Headphone jack
Cons: None so far

Wonderful near-field speakers. The staging is excellent to the point that it feels like the band is playing at your desk. Have I heard better speakers? Yes. But for an office environment where you don't want to broadcast everything these are nearly perfect. The bass reduction switch is nice. The connections are lovely; and headphones (Sennheiser 380 Pros in my case) sound great coming out of the conveniently located front headphone jack and integrated DAC. I'm going to get my wife a pair for her desk.
Pros: Great soundstage Convenient connections Front headphone jack All needed cables included Build quality
Cons: They're pricey. But you pay for what you get.

Ive always enjoyed listening to music on better speakers. However since the time I sold my previous car which I upgraded the entire stereo in until buying these audio engines I can't say I've had a great set of speakers. A friend of mine had a set of hd6s. After listening to those I immediately went to crutchfield and ordered the hd3s. Why? Well my room is small and the hd6s would have been too much for the space. However I can say now after weeks of listening I feel I compromised nothing in sound quality but not opting for the hd6s. The low to high end responses are crystal clear. The volume can go higher and higher and there is zero distortion. The bass is just enough as to not be overpowering. I have heard sounds in my music that I have not heard ever before. There is truly definition in left and right speakers so you know it's playing stereo. At the end of the day the price for these speakers is worth every penny as well as the shipping time you will wait for them. Look at this as an investment. You will use these speakers everyday for years, that equates to pennies after years of use. You will not regret buying these, and if you so chose there are rca outs so you can add extra sets of speakers or a sub.

Great Sounding Desktop Speakers
Crutchfield customer from Elgin, SC on 8/21/2018
I decided to go with this brand after reading and watching some reviews on the Internet. Although I think the retail price is a bit expensive and I had purchased these prior to the reduced sale price by the manufacturer, I took one star away because of the usb cable that is included. Speakers sound great using the usb connection to my computer; the cable Barely reaches the location of my desktop and the mini usb connection on the cable is not flush witht the back of the speakers when plugged in. The mini usb doen't connect all the way into the usb port on the speaker. Maybe this is normal, don't know. I am disappointed that the usb cable or internal DAC does not support 24 bit and 96Khz (or higher) sampling rate straight from my computer, which can handle up to 192 Khz sampling rate. But even with 16bit 48 Khz, these speakers have very good sound imaging. Ive only tried Bluetooth connection once and they sound really good too. Better value when these speakers are on sale.
Pros: Solid build quality Sound Imaging Magnetic grills Spacious sound envelop from small drivers
Cons: Price Mini USB cable port on speaker 16 bit 48 Khz input to "24 bit" internal DAC

I was looking for small speakers for a small room and these are amazing. Great build quality and they project an fantastic soundstage. The lows are ok. If you need more base, then I recommend a sub but I'm happy with them without a sub.

Just right
Mario from Hilmar, CA on 9/28/2017
Bought these for my home gym. I wanted something small that would still fill the room with sound. I didn't want to spend a fortune, but I also didn't want crap. These definitely fit the bill and I am really enjoying my workouts a little more these days. Bass isn't great but I didn't expect it to be from these smaller speakers.
Pros: Great sound for such a Small size. Crystal clear and no distortion.
Cons: Would definitely benefit from a separate bass module.

Perfect Solution for Me
Allen from San Francisco, CA on 9/11/2017
Really work seamlessly. And for someone who just turned 90 , that is a genuine plus. The sound is true, at least for the 40s and 50s jazz and big band music I listen to. Everyone these days seems to spend more time judging on how well the speakers work with music that isn't particularly musical.

Nice product, mediocre sound
Herb from Potomac, MD on 7/14/2017
Build quality, ease of use, good desktop form factor, and appearance are all excellent. Sound quality not so much. Perhaps playing them louder would help. It's an improvement over standard speakers. Unfortunately, better sounding speakers like Emotiva or Adam) are also about 50% wider and 25% wider making them too large for my desktop.
Pros: Build quality ease of use good desktop form factor appearance
Cons: Sound Quality

Clear sound. Loud enough. Reliable BT connection
Dan from Denver, CO on 6/13/2017
Excellent sound. Especially clear in the upper midrange. Plenty loud for a small room. I use them as a bluetooth stereo and have them on 36" stands. They look a little funny because they are small, but sound great. Especially nice with vocal music. But also sound good with other genres like rock. I generally use them with the bass cut switch activated. It changes the sound signature quite a bit if you allow the bass frequency to pass through. If you want bass, get a sub. I do sacrifice the low end, but I am living in an apartment so that works for me. If you are looking for the deep bass notes of electronic music etc, you will miss them with out a sub. However, it is so easy to pick out instrumental parts. During casual listening I often catch myself hearing parts I normally wouldn't notice. The addition of a remote would have been nice. They pair very quickly and never drop. Great product, a little expensive.
Pros: Clear sound, good connectivity, good volume for size. Incredible compact package competes with other great bookshelf speakers. Space savers dream.
Cons: Light on bass. Low frequency switch colors sound when you DO NOT cut the bass out. Better with switch activated.

This is a premature 4 but it should really be premature 5 because they really are quite nice. I couldn't deal anymore. I have a decent size music library, Apple Music and Sirius but only a lap top, phone and junky blue tooth speaker. Now it sounds like I have an old school 80's house set up. At first I didn't know where the money I spent went to but I started playing around with them and they are very versatile and above all they sound awesome. I bought them as a small living room set up and I was wondering if I should have got the HD6 instead but these are more than enough. If I lived in an apartment I could see neighbors complaining. The bass is sufficient for desktop set-ups, but for my purposes my next purchase will be the S8 sub. I'm also going to get the DS1 stands because they will vibrate. There are other cost efficient ways to sound deaden them and keep them stable but the stands do look clean. Take it from a cheap skate, spend the money you'll be stoked.

Good, but small
L. CURTIS from Richmond, VA on 5/1/2017
These are good little computer speakers for nearfield listening. The pair I ordered looked great, like small walnut blocks of art sitting on my desk. The soundstage, however, is small. Great from a nearfield position, but not the best if you get up from your desk and move around the room, even with a subwoofer attached. I liked them, but ended up returning them. Decided to try the NAD D 3020 amp with a pair of bookshelf speakers I had. Same amount of money, but a much larger soundstage with the bookshelf speakers (Boston Acoustics A25s). Sound easily fills the whole room. The bigger sound stage and greater versatility of the amp/ bookshelf combo (I can always upgrade the speakers later) was a no brainer for me.
Pros: Small, Beautiful, 3 year warranty
Cons: Small soundstage. Good for nearfield listening only in my opinion. Subwoofer is not muted when using the headphone jack.

Great sounding speakers! Very easy to set up and use. The quality of the build is excellent as is the sound. I use them in a room that is 25'x11' and the sound fills the room. Connected to a subwoofer which is shared with another receiver and it is more than enough to satisfy your listening experience.
Pros: Great sound from small speakers!
Cons: The port on the speaker is for a mini USB and not the regular size. Not a huge problem though.

Amazing sound
Frank from Central, PA on 3/22/2017
These are amazing speakers for being so small. The bass is more than adequate and the mids and highs are great. I steam CDs to them with an iPod Touch and have no problems. They are used in a bedroom on Definitive Technology Prostand 1000 stands. While these stands are made for other specific speakers, these mount easily on the larger of the plates supplied with the stands, and the furnished mounting screws are a perfect fit in the threaded socket on the bottom of each speaker. Quick and easy with very good stability. Placed along a wall they provide a small and out of the way footprint, fully controlled by the iPod kept at beside. When the Bluetooth connection is cut off via the iPod the speakers soon go to a low power standby mode. They are quite versatile and can be set up to work in a variety of other ways with furnished interconnects, all of good quality.
Pros: Great Sound. A Bluetooth source is all you need. Can be easily moved around. Very well made.
Cons: None.

Long story short, the Audioengine HD 3 is quality product. The soundstage is amazing considering the size if the speakers. The speakers are so easy to connect to Bluetooth and they look great. For me it's all about the sound and the HD 3 delivers. I am using as a pair of mini bookshelf speakers and am very pleased with the overall performance. Would highly recommend.
Pros: Exceptional sound, easy to connect to Bluetooth, easy to use, look great

Small speakers that sound big
Francis from Ft Collins, CO on 2/8/2017
Outstanding desktop speakers. The quality of sound is excellent and accurate with any music type- I listen to jazz, rock, classical and even punk. The base is pretty formidable on these small guys (and they are small, which is what you want for a desk; they sound much bigger). I attached a small subwoofer and set the frequency to pick up only when a large amount of bass needs generated, and they can completely fill my midsize room, home office. They are so loud and powerful, however, that they may be overwhelming for an office setting or a more crowded home (I can hear a small amount of bass thump a few rooms away). Bluetooth works terrific. While I'm sure some super critics may criticize the data transfer of bluetooth, I don't notice the difference and, in fact, have heard clarity of the instruments not noticeable in my audiophile speakers and music cache. My ideal setup is to have my MacBook blue toothed in with Amazon Unlimited, and an Echo plugged in. Can keep music going all day long and still have the freedom of a laptop computer. Fit and finish was exceptional- great attention to detail. Highly recommend.
Pros: Small size Terrific and accurate sound Decent bass Bluetooth with options to plug traditional components in
Cons: May actually be too big of sound for small room/shared office No remote control, so need to be near speakers to control volume

Amazing Sound From Small Speakers
Henry from Dublin, OH on 1/12/2017
I am a proud owner of the Audioengine HD3 (Walnut) speakers. It started because I am tired of listening to portable bluetooth speakers like the Bose Mini. True they're convenient and good for what they are, but I think they lack the depth, sound quality and detailed imaging. I missed the great sound of the stereo systems of yesteryear. I wanted something that sounds awesome, provides detailed imaging, is modest in size, and simple to setup. Audioengine to the rescue. Until I received these speakers, I had never owned or listened to Audioengine speakers before. I picked these speakers based on online reviews. The HD3's are small and solid. I rank the build quality as exceptional. Setup took 5 minutes. Don't let their diminutive size fool you. They sound much, much bigger. Their audio quality is incredible. They have a warm, and very crisp, clean sound. Imaging is outstanding and they do get surprisingly loud for such a small package. No distortion even at the highest volume levels. I like to listen to Classical music, Jazz, and 60s Psychedelic Rock and the HD3's handled every instrument and note cleanly and accurately. The speakers by themselves are not for bassheads. They do provide excellent bass for their size, but you will need to connect a powered subwoofer to get those really deep notes. Overall, I am very impressed. They have exceeded my expectations and are well worth the price. Give them a try. I think you'll be pleasantly amazed.
Pros: Amazing Crisp, Clean Sound. Detailed Imaging, Small size, Simple setup, Flexible connectivity, Exceptional Build Quality
Cons: Baseheads will need a powered subwoofer. No optical audio input. No Remote Control

Full rich spacious sound for small speakers
Michael from Prescott, AZ on 12/27/2016
I must admit this is the first review I have ever written. I love classical music and motion picture soundtracks. My computer is hooked up to my home theater sound system but for simple listening like instructional videos online my wife just wanted small desk top speakers she can turn on, so I bought the HD3 speakers. After hooking them up I turned them on and What A Sound! The full rich spacious sound that came out of these speakers blew me off my chair. I did not expect that sound quality to come out of these small speakers. As always Crutchfield's service was wonderful.
Pros: If you primarily listen to desk top speakers at your computer desk just add the subwoofer for extreme bottom end and who needs a full blown stereo system in your office.
Cons: none
