Cambridge Audio AXR100

What is the power rating into 6 ohm and 4 ohm speakers? Also, do I need to do anything differently when Bi-Wiring to my Wharfedale Denton 80thâ??s. These are 6 ohm speakers.

The AXR100 would meet the requirements for wattage and impedance to accommodate the KEF R3 Meta.

Will the CA-AXR100 work well with my Klipsch RP6000-F floor standing speakers?

I would be happy to help, Brian. Only 8-ohm power numbers are listed in the specifications from Cambridge, so we cannot determine if there is a power gain for 6-ohm speakers. The AXR100 is 4-ohm stable, so no worries there. Make sure to remove the jumpers on your Denton's. If you are using two separate wires for each speaker to bi-wire you just have to make sure to select the "speakers A and B" settings on the front panel of the Cambridge. I see on the back panel of the AXR100 that standby power is "<0.5W". My question: Can the unit wake from standby on detection of signal from one of the optical inputs? If not, what is the power consumption when powered on but idle? The scenario here is I want to be able to stream to the AXR100 from a Chromecast dongle plugged into one of the AXR's optical ports without having to physically turn the AXR100 on and off each time. So need to either wake from standby or be very low power when idle. Thanks for any insight.

Honestly, I found the receiver to be underpowered. But I listen mostly to rock. If you listen to jazz or classical primary, you'll probably be ok. Those are good size speakers, however. For the money, I would try the Yamaha as-501 or, if you could stretch your budget, the Yamaha as-701 or even the as-801, if possible. My first choice out of the 3 alternatives I mentioned would definitely be the as801, but I like to have plenty of power to drive my woofers so they slam with decent authority during louder passages, like loud heavy metal. There is a YouTube video camparing to 2 similarly powered models (Cambridge be Yamaha): search for "The $350 integrated amp comparison" on YouTube. That's just my best recommendation. Or try something tubed like the Nobsound ak525, available on the Nobsound/Douk Audio website. Another option would be to get the as501 or as701, and add a subwoofer later. Good on your search! i have a project carbon debut evo and 2 8ohms jbl bookshelf speakers. Will this receiver work well with my setup, and will i get sufficient volume?

It is not possible for the Cambridge Audio AXR100 to sense a signal over the optical input and automatically "wake up" sadly, Dan. We also cannot nail down an exact number for power consumption when powered ON but not in use for any signal amplification, as that spec is not provided by Cambridge. It sounds like a better solution for the control you need would be to consider the Cambridge Audio EVO 75 in the link below. The AXR100 should do nicely for your system. It has plenty of power to offer and a built-in phono preamp for moving magnet cartridges like the one that comes stock on the Debut Carbon EVO.

The Cambridge Audio AXR100 uses a standard 120V power supply, M Pal. The unit can also be used with European voltage/plugs if you are planning on taking yours outside of the U.S.

I just purchased this item (Cambridge Audio AXR100) to use in our shop. We hav a number of JBL monitor speakers attached to the new receiver. At a certain volume the unit shuts down. Is there another unit I can add to take some of the speaker load? Like a post-amp?

That sounds like a nice setup, Douglas. The Cambridge AXR100 blurs the lines and gives integrated amp levels of sound quality and performance in a stereo receiver. The toroidal transformer ensures clean, dynamic sound and delivers 100-watts to the Klipsch speakers. The Klipsch R600-F is a highly sensitive speaker and would work well on that power, all I see is thumbs up here Douglas!

Greetings Ruben, and thank you for your question. The Cambridge Audio AXR100 has just one subwoofer output. If you wanted to have two subwoofers, you just get an RCA splitter, One on the receiver side, that splits to two on the subwoofer side.

Does the AXR100 and/or AXR85 have a two or three prong power connection in back? Pictures on this site seem to show 2, unboxing videos clearly show 3. I have a 60hz ground loop problem, and I need a unit with no ground on its plug. I live in the mountains in TN... nothing seems to work in resolving this ground loop. Thanks!

The AXR 100 does not have a remote function. The only integrated Cambridge Audio amps that do have wireless ability are the Evo 75 and Evo 150. All of the others will use a traditional remote and standard push buttons on the unit for controls.

Yes, and very much enjoyed it. At the paired price point I have nothing bad to say and loved the crystal clear imagining and detail. I wanted a little more depth and dynamism from my system and upgraded to the Azure 851a and added dual KEFsubwoofers. Again, more bass and allowed the metal's to focus more on midrange detail and delaoded the speakers of LF work. But all things have a price.... At the price of the AXR I'd say a simple sub will do you wonders and it'll be an amazingly capable system.

No I don't. Mine drives an old pair of Snell Acoustics Type Ell's. All I can say is that the AXR100 does a fine job. Unless those KEF's require enormous power I can't imagine you could go wrong with the AXR200.

No idea how it compares to a Marantz or any other good receiver/ amplifier. And that would be totally subjective anyway, unless you had them operating side-by-side with switching capability. Only know I bought it based on all the positive reviews and reputed "tubular" sound quality and bass similar to that produced my old B&K toroidal amp. I have Toby 8" co-axial ceiling speakers in 4 rooms, and use a Niles high-end selector. Very pleased with the sound.

The Cambridge AXR100 receiver has a good bass and a warm sound. I don't know anything about the Marantz SR4023. I did take a quick look at the back the Marantz SR4023 and it looks like it might have more inputs for components than the Cambridge AXR100. Also, check the PDF manual of the AXR100 and see how its' specs compares with the SR4023 specs.

Mine does not generate that much heat but I would not place it in an enclosure that does not give it at least 2" above it if open air.

If the enclosure is properly vented it should be fine. I push mine pretty hard and it has never gotten too hot to touch. Actually one of the cooler running amps I have ever used.

I have this receiver I've overheated it two times because I was driving it so hard I don't have it in an enclosure it does have a cooling fan I think if your enclosure is vented you should be fine it's a great receiverEnter an answer to this question.

From looking at the specs the BP-9060 speakers are 8 ohm with 92db sensitivity. Based on that, yes, the AXR100 will drive them just fine. I have ELAC F6.2s (6 ohm, 87db) and the AXR100 handles them brilliantly. As for suggestions--anything from 8 ohm to 4 ohm speakers will work. After that it is about your preference re: speaker sound signature. As for the AXR100 it is a remarkably good receiver and an excellent piece of audio kit.

As long as you like the sound of DT BP-9060 speakers, Cambridge receiver should have no problem powering them, as the speakers are pretty efficient (92 db) and its integral subwoofer is self-powered. Only other thing to consider is size of room and how loud you play it. I have an inefficient pair of speakers (vintage Rodgers) hooked up and volume knob is cranked up a bit for playing "loud" (which is not what the Rodgers were designed for anyway).

I don't see why not. This receiver is powerful enough for almost any speaker. I use the Klipsch RP-600M speakers are they are a great combination. The Klipsch speakers can be too bright and cause ear fatigue with some high end receivers. The AXR100 has a detailed and powerful but smoother sound output so it helps offset the natural brightness of the speakers. I am enjoying it.

I have my TV hooked to this receiver with a Toslink optical digital cable, which is the same way I had the TV hooked up to a soundbar and it worked fine, but the receiver is not picking it up. I tried both the D1 and D2 connections and nothing. Any suggestions?

I did use Toslink at first and it worked just fine but needed the Toslink port on the receiver for a DAC so changed to RCA for TV. Check your Toslink cable for kinks or indentations. The fibers may be damaged. Try connecting another component to Optical input on the receiver to see if it works.

What bitstream is your TV sending? If it's Dolby Digital that may be the issue. It should be Stereo PCM.

Hi, you try to use for movies or dolby dtx content? If is yes you need to change the sound output to PCM. I have de same problem whit my nvidia sheld and i swich the audio output to PCM and now whorking fine. The problem is the axr 100 is only stereo receiver and no have dolby or dtx decoder integraded.

The AXR100 does have built in bluetooth connectivity. If it isn't sufficient for you there are any number of bluetooth transmitters on the market that can be connected via rca or toslink.

How do I connect a flat screen TV?

for the last two years I've been listening for several hours a day to my Cambridge axr100, volume (because I'm mostly listening to online radio) cranked up pretty high, generally jazz. because I'd read about fan noise before I bought the unit I listened closely for it, especially in the weeks after I got it. I've never heard it. love the sound I get from the amplifier, much better than my antique Yamaha. it's got the power to drive the 4 ohm speakers I use. I've been very happy with it. I

I have seen some reviewers mention fan noise. I have had my AXR100 for over a year and have never heard a peep out of the fan. I use it for both music and tv. I do have mine placed where the unit gets more than enough ventilation.

The fan can be heard in this unit. I believe the more expensive unit do not have the fan. We ended up returning this model and opted for a much more expensive integrated, Musical Fidelity M6SI. We were not pleased with the sound of the AXR100.

does it make terrible sense to run a Dac Magin200m from a PC into this if we are in a desktop enviroment? I was thinking about upgrading to this and the 200m from a DacMagic100.

Two choices - use one of the digital inputs from the TV. to the receiver. You will need a cable with the proper ends so the digital audio output of the TV can match the digital input on the receiver. Otherwise, as I have, use a paired RCA cable to attach to analog input 3. My TV has both. I prefer to keep most of my inputs to this receiver analog as they have similar 'volume and balance' to my speakers

Hi John - assume you mean a HDTV, but what do you want to connect, i.e. video, audio, bluetooth, or other? The AXR100 has no video inputs, just a 2-speaker stereo receiver. For my audio inputs, I have a CD player attached to D2 and the audio of a 4K Sony HDTV to the D1 port using an optical cable - all inputs through the TV (Roku, Apple TV, 4K Bluray player, cable, plus their 'apps') will play their audio via the Cambridge D1 input port. Not sure that is your question; if not, please clarify. Dave P.S. the Bluetooth can only pair and receive signals, like a BT speaker.

I assume you are referring to the Cambridge 200M DAC. You can connect your computer to the DAC with a USB cable (of the kind you would use to connect an exeternal USB hard drive), then connect the DAC to one of the line level (not phono) analog inputs of the receiver using the unbalanced outputs of the DAC and standard RCA-style interconnect. Whether this will be terrible or not will be up to you, but it should sound fine. Try the USB ground lift on back of the receiver if you get noise coming in over the USB connection. You can't use the balanced outputs of the DAC since the receiver does not have any balanced inputs.

Rec out is line level output and does not respond to the volume control on the axr100. If that works for you, then yes.

What's the best way to connect a laptop (Lenovo) to the AXR100?

I bought a Cambridge audio AXR100 from these guys last year...my 35yr old Sony sound system was funking out as were my Yamaha speakers. I also got 2 Klipsch RP 600oF speakers.. I still have a StantonST.150 turntable and a Sony CD player. The sound is great..not quite as big as with my Yamaha speakers..they were big recording studio speakers, but I am very happy with the music now.

its super rare for a laptop to have an optical drive. even most pc mother boards have shunned them. with that i mind i too am trying to listen to music with a "pc" as a source. USB is def the way to go. it can handle higher quality than bluetooth (BT). basically BT aptxHD is capped at like 24 bit 48hkhz. so if you want to go to 24 bit 96 or 192 you cannot. also i am not sure if BT can do DSD. with all this in mind i am currently looking at a cambridge AXR100 + Dac Magic 200m set up. This would allow for max quality + DSD/MQA + front controls for base/treb + radio + sub out and no need for powered speakers. which opens the door to a lot of options for speakers. right now i have a dac magic 100 into klipsch R-41pm's. love it but i want higher quality and some new functionality.

if the laptop had an optical output you could use that but most laptops don't. I use Bluetooth to stream my music from my ThinkPad to the receiver and it works quite well.

Can I use a MM cartridge with an output greater than 6mV with the Cambridge AXR100? Considering using the Rega Exact on my table but worry a a cartridge of 6.8-7.2 mV will create too much signal for the built in phono stage and cause distortion.

i have a Rega Planar 1. will i need to ground this turntable? it has no grounding pin on it.

That should be fine. The volt output of the cartridge only impacts the moving coil type (those must be the high output type to work with the phono input on this receiver)

I'm using a Sumiko Rainier cartridge with my AXR100. It is rated at 5mv and I have no issues. I've read reviews of the CA Solo and Duo phono preamps that measure cartridge output of up to 100mv without noticeable distortion. The phono stage in the AXR100 is probably not identical to these but I seriously doubt that any mm cart with under 10mv output will challenge it.

Is the Cambridge Audio AXR100 able to handle 16 ohm speakers? I have 8 advent speakers each at 8 ohm. When connected in serial on channel A it produces 16 ohms of impedance.

Supposedly, Rega turntable uses its left RCA plug (outer shield) for its ground connnection. So, if you have no hum, no problem. If you still experience hum, try connecting a wire from the left RCA plug to the amplifier ground.

Boy I wish I could help you but I'd be making up the answer. Never been there never done that lol. I'm currently running 4 Heresy iii speakers A&B and they're around 97% efficient. Can the subwoofer volume be adjusted in the receiver's interface?

As noted by another response, Cambridge does not specify a power output specific to 4 ohms. Cambridge does state it is safe to use the AXR100 with 4 ohm loads (just no power rating). I am a little suspect of the other answer that includes a response from Cambridge support. This seems like marketing type response and not one that came from engineering. I find it highly unlikely that the AXR100 will achieve a max output of 200 watts with a 4 ohm load. I say this based on the fact that the Cambridge CXA81 amplifier's rated 4 ohm output is only 50% higher than the 8 ohm output. - 80 watts and 120 watts, respectively. While the AXR100 features a robust amp and power supply, it is not as advanced as the higher end CXA81 and unlikely to achieve the current needed to produce 200 watts at 4 ohms. My guess is that the output would be closer to 120 watts with a 4 ohm speaker load. This is based on similar priced amplifiers and designs. A speaker pair with a 4 ohm rating will not be an issue. However, if you are planning to operate (2) pairs of speakers (on A & B circuits) simulataneously, you will want to use speakers with impedances closer to 8 ohms so that the combined (parallel) load does not drop below 4 ohms. Otherwise, you risk tripping the protection circuit in the amp.

Hello - I was curious about speaker impedance w/ my AXR100, so sent an email to Cambridge Support which was answered w/i a few hours and is quoted below. My main speakers are 8 Ohms, but appears that twice the amperage would be sent to the 4 Ohm speakers so the recommendation would be to keep the volume at modest to moderate levels. Hope this helps. Dave "We recommend running the AXR100 with speakers rated at 6/8 Ohms. However you will be able to run lower Ohm speakers through it, just bear in mind that you may not need to run the amp high to get the same volume, for example if you run the device at the 1 O'Clock position for 8 Ohm speakers, you may only need to run it at 11 O'Clock to get the same respective volume output. You shouldn't get issues unless you run them at a very loud volume, there are also amp protections built in to ensure the device would protect itself. To be honest all I can tell you is with my receiver is connected to two Klipsch and two Polk Audio speakers providing me with a beautiful quadraphonic sound. I have had the receiver about 19 months and I am very happy with it, I had a Marantz Model 19 that I retired and this is as good as that unit as my old friend. I am in my 60's and have never measured ohms on equipment like this. Maybe the manual would be more Helpful.

The manufacturer does not provide a 4ohm rating, regardless of not having that 4ohm rating ,this receiver will drive any ohm rated speaker with ease.

No, it can not. You would need a powered subwoofer. The only control you would have in a passive SW would be what Hz it kicks in at, if it has that option.

Be near the receiver with phone you want to pair, turn power on the receiver and push Phono/BT button until it says BT, then go to your phone settings under Bluetooth and wait for AXR100 to show up in your Bluetooth menu- you may have to choose it on your phone the first time, but after you've paired it the first time it will do this automatically if your phone is in range and you've chosen BT on the receiver. I do find that it works best if you keep your phone very close to the receiver- mine won't play clearly unless it is stationary and in close range so just keep your phone near receiver while listening if you have this issue as well. Hope that helps!

You can change voltage for US or European with a switch on the back of the unit. Ohm is a measurement of resistance in an electrical circuit. No switch for that

You don't have to. If you plug in a pair of 4 Ohm speakers it should just work. Though I guess you wouldn't want to mix a 4 Ohm pair with an 8 Ohm pair.

Can I switch it to 220v by my self, if ordering it from U.S?

I use mine with a pair of Monitor Audio Silver bookshelf speakers that are probably 40 years old (if they made them back then but I think they did) in the living room of my apartment and it rocks. Terrific warmth at low volumes with plenty of head room for demanding passages. I run mine in 4 ohm mode and I couldn't be happier. Cambridge Audio makes excellent gear. I picked up a Cambridge Audio powered subwoofer through Crutchfield along with the acoustic isolation mount (to show a little mercy on the neighbors) and the whole system is just a real joy. I added a Cambridge Audio CXNv2 DAC to run my digital library through using Roon music service and Tidal and it plays real well together. Everything was suggested by Crutchfield's excellent sales staff and they were right on the money. I say go for it. I'd be shocked if you didn't fall in love with it.

I returned ours because it was a bit to warm for our liking. We ended up with a Musical Fidelity M6si - great sound, lots of power and none of that wireless crap. Pure 2 channel bliss. But if you are in a small apartment perhaps the Musical Fidelity M3si might suit you. Unfortunately, Crutchfield doesn't sell Musical Fidelity.

We do not research this aspect of the unit to know the exact process involved in switching to 220V as we only ship to U.S. addresses. As Nigel indicated, the manual lists its only for serving the unit and does not cover how to change it. I recommend contacting Cambridge Audio's support by calling 877-357-8204 to check on the process and make sure it does not void the warranty

I was also curious about the BT features of my Cambridge AXR100 and sent their support team an email - basically, the BT in the receiver is built to only receive, e.g. input from another device such as a phone or iPad - their response below - hope this helps. This means it cannot connect to wireless headphones or wireless speakers but it can connect to your phone or tablet and play any audio from your device. Yes there is, either analog or digital. Just note that the ports are not labeled as "CD" or "DVD" etc, just as A1/D1, A2/D2 etc. I have my CD player connected to "A1/D1" via digital optical cable.Great sounding Receiver.

Is the circuitry in the Cambridge Solo phono preamp the same as the one inside the Cambridge AXR100 receiver, or is the dedicated preamp superior to that in the receiver?

You should be able blue tooth to the receiver with your iphone and have both speaker and headphone functions. If the speaker function is not working and the speakers are on, sounds like you might have a receiver issue. If you haven't already done so, I would log in to Cambridge Audio tech support and request their assistance. I had a separate issue with my receiver and tech support was very helpful. Hope this helps.

On paper it seems about the same other than (as you mentioned) Bluetooth, but also a more current DAC. (I think I read somewhere it was a Cirrus chip, instead of a Wolfson one in the Topaz, but now I can't find that anywhere.) Either way it'd be a newer DAC.

The AXR100 features a 24 bit / 192 kHz internal DAC. Cambridge Audio does not specify a manufacturer (brand) for this DAC so it is either an in-house design or possibly a private label design from a third party DAC provider. I have tested with both the optical and coaxial digital inputs and have found the audio quality to be very good. Unless you are looking at a premium CD player (or other source) with a high-end internal DAC, I doubt that you will notice much difference. I use my Blu Ray player as a CD transport and feed the digital output to the AXR100 using an optical cable. With this set-up, I have been very happy with the sound quality from the AXR DAC. If you want more specifics on the DAC, you might reach out to Cambridge's support department.

The manual for the AXR100 explains these adjustments in the 'Operating Instructions" section - simply use the 'Menu' button on the front of the unit or on the remote - bass, treble, and balance will be choices that can then be adjusted. Dave

i don't have any information on the power output at 6ohms, I am driving a pair of elac debut 6.2 , if i was to turn the volume past the 11o,clock i would loose my hearing , more power than i will ever push to its top power level. enjoy it , very good product.

I guess I'm not sure in regards to a phone connect for turntable? There are dedicated phono inputs for a turntable as well as ground connection. I currently do have a Denon turntable hooked up to it, but only requires the 2 phono jacks. Does this help?

Well, there are auxiliary inputs and two optical inputs that I use for my CD player and TV and also a phono input, not sure what kind of outputs XM radio or Echo have but really I use Bluetooth. I have an app on my smartphone for my jazz station which I can pair and also I have a laptop in my office room and one in my music studio that I can Bluetooth my music upstairs to my home stereo.

I am unfamiliar with the Mission line up. But I really like the Monitor Audio line up. Those Bronze speakers would great, and will pair up with that amp really well!

The housing is made of heavy sheet metal. The top and sides are matte black. The front housing appears to be made of a similar or perhaps slightly thicker gauge metal (I didn't take apart to measure), with the edges rolled back so it looks at a glance like a thick plate. The front is finished in a slightly metallic silver paint. The volume dial is cast plastic, painted in the same metallic as the front panel. Dial has a good feel and in my opinion it doesn't feel "cheap," but it also doesn't have the "luxe" feel you'd expect with say a machined piece of stainless steel you might find on more expensive amps.
