Cambridge updates its popular CXN streamer

We love it when one of our favorite pieces of gear gets even better. The CXN100 is the newest version of Cambridge Audio's flagship network streamer. It's got an upgraded high-res DAC, a bigger full-color display, expanded streaming options, and great Cambridge sound.

High-resolution DAC

The CXN100's ESS Sabre DAC serves up clarity and rich detail with PCM-based files up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD files up to 22.5 MHz (DSD512). You can play music from your collection of downloaded files and your favorite streaming services like Spotify®, TIDAL, Amazon Music, and more — whether you're connected to your network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This streamer also decodes MQA files — a format TIDAL sometimes uses for higher-than-CD-quality tracks.

Flexible connections

Like its predecessor, the CXN100 has a balanced stereo XLR output, so you can take advantage of that type of connection with a compatible high-performance amplifier. It also has coaxial and optical digital inputs and can double as a preamp for your digital sources. Digital outputs allow you to connect to an external DAC.

App-based and easy front-panel control

You'll need to download Cambridge's free StreamMagic app, available for Apple® and Android™ mobile devices. It gives you several ways to access and control your music, including support for popular internet streaming services. Or you can play local tracks stored on a NAS drive, connect a computer directly via the rear-panel USB-B input, or plug in a USB thumb drive loaded with tunes.

We love the way you can control the CXN100 from its front panel. You can see your services and attached drives on the bright screen and navigate through your sources with the buttons.

Even more ways to stream

The CXN100 also supports Chromecast built-in and Apple AirPlay 2 for easy access to even more streaming content. And built-in Bluetooth gives friends and family an easy way to connect wirelessly and play music using a compatible smartphone, tablet, or computer.

If you're using Roon (subscription required), the CXN100 will show up in your player list.

Audio & DAC Section

Pure Audio Signal Path: The Cambridge Audio CXN100 network audio player employs an ESS ES9028Q2M SABRE32 DAC (digital-to-analog converter), carefully chosen components, plus a custom engineered and finally tuned audio circuitry that has been simplified for a purer signal path and exceptional sound quality. The CXN100 supports a variety of Hi-Res digital music files including MQA, DSD, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, PCM, and WAV.

  • MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): MQA is a revolutionary end-to-end technology that captures and delivers master quality audio in a file that's small enough to stream or download. MQA lets you hear your streamed digital music files exactly like the way the artist intended you to hear it when it was approved in the studio.
  • DSD (Direct Stream Digital): DSD is high-resolution digital audio format that uses a single bit to deliver a high resolution signal. Instead of sampling the information several thousand times a second, this single bit samples 2.8 million times a second to generate the audio signal. The result is still a Hi-Res audio signal that clean and pure. The CXN100 supports native DSD64 to DSD512.
  • Other Support Audio Files: The CXN also supports many other popular formats via Network, UPnP, and USB connection. Supported codecs include PCM, WAV, FLAC, and AIFF (all up to 32-bit/768kHz); ALAC (up to 24-bit/192kHz); MP3 and ACC (16-320kbps); plus WMA and Ogg Vorbis (32-320kbps).

Note: The CXN100 does not support WMA pro, WMA lossless, RAW, AU, or other music file types not mentioned.

USB Connectivity: The Cambridge Audio CXN100 network audio player offers USB connectivity with a rear-panel USB-A port to connect a USB MSC device or portable USB HDD, plus a rear-panel USB-B port to connect your Windows or Mac computer.

  • USB-A Port: The USB-A allows for music playback from a USB MSC (mass storage class) device or portable HDD (hard disk drive) - up to 32-bit/768kHz stereo 2ch PCM and DSD512. Your USB device must be formatted in FAT32 or NTFS format with non-DRM music files. The CXN100 cannot supply greater than 1A from the USB-A port, so some HDDs may require external AC power.
  • Asynchronous USB-B Input: The asynchronous USB-B port enables the CXN100 to be connected to your Windows PC or Mac computer for playback of music files up to 32-bit/768kHz stereo 2ch PCM and DSD512. The CXN100 will act as a very high-quality DAC/sound-card with very low jitter for your computer, offering genuine Hi-Fi-quality playback from your stored music libraries. The CXN100 is both USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) and USB 1.1 (Full-speed) USB port compatible. It will also work with the new USB 3.0 ports where the PC will simply treat the CXN100 as if it were a USB 2.0 or 1.1 device.
    • PC Compatible: With the CXN100 switched to USB Audio 1.0 (this is the default setting), the CXN100 will work with the native Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8 Audio 1.0 driver (no need to load any new driver) and accept audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. With the CXN100 switched to USB Audio 2.0, the CXN100 needs the Cambridge Audio USB Audio 2.0 Driver to be loaded and can then accept up to 32-bit/768kHz.
    • Mac Compatible: No extra drivers are required to connect your Mac computer. With the CXN100 switched to USB Audio 1.1, the CXN100 will work with the native Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or above Audio 1.0 driver and accept audio up to 24/96kHz. With the CXN100 switched to USB Audio 2.0, the CXN100 works with the native Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or above Audio 2.0 driver and can accept audio up to 32-bit/768kHz.

Note: The USB ports do not support connection of Apple iOS and Android OS devices.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs:  The Cambridge Audio CXN100's optical (toslink) digital input and coaxial (s/pdif) digital input allows it to act as a high quality upsampling Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) to improve the sound from other devices, such as set top boxes, games consoles, or disc players. The optical digital input supports up to 24-bit/96kHz stereo sch PCM, while the coaxial digital input supports up to 24-bit/192kHz stereo 2ch PCM. The optical and coaxial digital inputs do not support Dolby Digital or DTS.

Note: The CXN100 is not equipped with any analog audio inputs.

Analog & Digital Outputs: The Cambridge Audio CXN100 network audio player is outfitted with both analog and digital audio outputs for a variety of setup and applications. Analog audio outputs include a balanced (XLR) stereo output and unbalanced RCA stereo output. Digital inputs include an optical (toslink) digital output and coaxial (s/pdif) digital output.

  • Balanced & Unbalanced Outputs: The CXN100 features both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) audio outputs to connect to a wide variety of home stereo receivers and amplifiers. The CXN100 features true balanced XLR analog audio outputs to connect high-end home receivers and amplifiers. XLR is a higher-quality output that can reject noise and interference with equipment with balanced inputs. The CXN100 also features an unbalanced stereo analog RCA audio output (Fixed or Variable) for connecting your stereo receiver or amplifier. The unbalanced and balanced outputs are simultaneously active.
  • Optical & Coaxial Digital Outputs: The CXN100 features two rear-panel digital outputs; one optical (toslink) digital output and one coaxial (s/pdif) digital output. These digital outputs allow pass-through of the selected digital source (no up-sampling performed). These outputs loop or pass-through unprocessed digital audio from the selected digital input. Both digital outputs are always active and can be used to connect and run equipment at the same time.

Note: If you would like to connect the CXN100 to more than one device at a time, you can connect up to four devices and play simultaneously, as all analog & digital outputs remain active at all times.

Network & Bluetooth Connectivity

Wired or Wireless Network Connectivity: The Cambridge Audio CXN100 network audio player offers a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (WiFi) connection to your home network for access to StreamMagic, Spotify Connect & Tidal Connect, Chromecast built-in AirPlay 2, Roon, as well as UPnP.

You can choose to play audio in one room, play the same audio in grouped rooms, or play the same audio in every room. If you are an Apple Music subscriber, you can even play different music in different rooms (you can control and group directly from Apple's Music App and Home app on your Apple iOS device). You will also be able to ask Siri-enabled devices (like your Apple iPhone, iPad, or Watch) to control playback of your Apple Music on the CXN100 player. You can even watch videos and movies from YouTube and Netflix on your compatible Apple iOS device or Mac computer with perfectly synced audio on the Cambridge Audio CXN100 network audio player.

UPnP Compatible: The Cambridge Audio CXN100 network audio player is a UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) AV Client. Being a UPnP Client means the it can connect to UPnP AV servers on a network and browse and playback their music content. A connection to the internet is not strictly needed for this. The CXN100 just needs to be able to connect to the server to access its content. Most operating systems and/or music playback software now feature UPnP server facilities built-in. This allow you to share the music on the computer's hard-drive with Clients, such as the CXN100. Your music library can include digital music located anywhere on your home network such as shared folders on your own computer (Windows or Mac), shared folders on another computer on your network, or music stored on a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device on your network. Using UPnP, the CXN100 network player can connect to these devices and play back, or 'stream' non-DRM music files via the network to your home entertainment system. UPnP connection supports up to 32-bit/768kHz stereo 2ch music files and DSD512

Note: Not all servers may support all audio formats. Always make sure the server you choose also supports your formats of choice.

Roon Ready: The CXN100 is Roon Ready certified. Roon links your personal music files with the millions of tracks available on TIDAL and Qobuz, so you can manage your music files and discover new music tracks. Roon will transform and enhance the experience of browsing your music. Photos, bios, credits, reviews, lyrics, composers and more are found automatically, delivering an interactive liner-notes experience for your entire collection.

  • A Roon system starts with a Roon Server device and software that manages your music collection from many sources, and builds an interconnected digital library using enhanced information from Roon. The Roon Server can be your Mac or Windows PC with Roon software, or a server from one of Roon's hardware partners.
  • You'll be able browse and play music using Roon apps on Mac, Windows, Apple iPhone/iPad, and Android devices.
  • Roon streams formats up to 768kHz/32-bit PCM and DSD512 to Roon Ready devices, and intelligently converts audio to the optimal resolution for other devices.

Note: The Cambridge Audio CXN100 is Roon Ready and not a Roon Server device. You will still need a Roon Server device and software to enjoy Roon.

Built-In Bluetooth 5.1: The CXN100 offers built-in Bluetooth 5.1 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) of SBC and aptX codecs. You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer to the CXN100 network audio player. You still use your Bluetooth-enabled source device for control and to view song/artist/album information. You can pair multiple devices with the CXN100, but only one device can be used for playback at a time.

  • SBC: The SBC (Sub-Band Coding) is Bluetooth's standard audio codec that is universally compatible with all Bluetooth-enable devices. SBC supports up to 320kbps.
  • aptX: aptX is an audio codec that can provide "CD-quality" music (up to 16-bit/44.1kHz). The CXN100 will automatically utilize aptX when connected to a source (such as Android) that supports aptX.

Notes:

  • Make sure both antennas are installed to utilize Bluetooth. Bluetooth audio still requires the StreamMagic App (for Apple iOS and Android OS) and a network connection for initial setup.
  • Your Bluetooth device can only be connected to the CXN100, while the Bluetooth source is selected. Once paired you should be able to connect to your source device at any time by selecting the Bluetooth source input on your player and then choosing the device r from the list of previously paired devices
