About the Cambridge Audio Minx X301

Dave Bar

A sub for bass lovers

High-powered rock concerts, soulful jazz tunes, rumbling action flicks — the Cambridge Audio Minx X301 can handle all of it, and more. It delivers true home theater thunder thanks to a powerful 300-watt built in amplifier. And it's carefully engineered to deliver audiophile-quality bass, so you can experience the visceral impact of big bass drums and baritone saxophones as if the instruments are being played right in front of you. Such room-filling performance might conjure images of a large, unwieldy subwoofer. But the X301 was designed with a surprisingly compact footprint — it measures less than a cubic foot.

Engineered with passion

The Minx X301 uses a newly designed 8" forward firing driver made of a single piece of strong-but-lightweight, aerospace-grade aluminum for amazing punch and attack. It's paired with a passive radiator that adds some serious mid-bass boost. Cambridge Audio's software engineers specially designed the sophisticated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) in this sub, allowing it to pump out sensational bass from a compact enclosure. You may even be fooled into thinking the X301 is several times its size.

Features

300W Amp w/ DSP: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer is equipped with a 300 watt (RMS) amplifier with digital signal processing. Cambridge Audio's software engineers have designed a sophisticated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to provide real-time control of equalization and dynamic range processing for the maximum possible performance while preventing drivers overloading or distorting. This allows the Minx X301 powered subwoofer to handle more power and play louder.

8" Woofer + 8" Radiator: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer uses a front-firing, one-piece, aerospace-grade aluminum 8" cone woofer powered by the built-in 300W amplifier and a down-firing one-piece, aerospace-grade aluminum 8" auxiliary bass radiator. The X301 powered subwoofer uses an ABR system rather than having either an enclosed box (which would require even more power) or a ported design (which would require a bigger cabinet). The result is an extremely efficient and powerful active subwoofer housed in a tiny cabinet.

Controls: The Minx powered subwoofer offers complete rear-panel control of volume, crossover frequency, and phase.

  • Volume Control: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer has a rear-panel rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system.
  • Crossover Frequency: The X301 powered subwoofer offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 50-200 Hz.
  • Phase Adjustment: The powered subwoofer's phase adjustment allows you to adjust the subwoofer's phase between 0° to 180°. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, adjusting the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass performance.

Connections: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer is fitted with stereo RCA inputs and outputs.

  • RCA Inputs: The powered subwoofer has gold plated left & right RCA line-level inputs for use with receivers having a subwoofer or stereo preamp output that do not contain their own low-pass crossover. The left channel RCA input doubles as the LFE input, if your receiver has an LFE output and a built-in low-pass crossover.
  • RCA Outputs: The powered subwoofer's gold-plated left & right RCA line-level outputs allow you to connect (daisy-chain) a second powered subwoofer. These RCA outputs pass-through a full-range audio signal and are unaltered by the powered sub's volume, crossover, or phase control settings.

Auto On/Off: The X301's Auto On/Off feature will switch the powered subwoofer On and Off automatically by signal detection.

Customer Q&A

4 questions already asked

Q
Are the RCA outputs full range/pass through? Or are they filtered low pass? Looking to add this to a Bluetooth speaker that has a high pass filter and an aux in to make a 2 piece system.

A
The RCA output is a full-range pass-through output that is not affected by the sub's volume, crossover, or phase settings.

Q
Can you disable the DSP and run it straight-through? If the DSP is done well, it could help, but if it's not done too well, it could hurt the sound considerably.

I am not aware of any way to shut off DSP. It is a clever way to smooth out mechanical limitations in the reality of speaker performance. You do get crossover and volume controls, with calibrated presets for Minx Min satellites, which I also recommend. Break those little speakers in for a few days before passing judgment. The subs are fantastic, no complaints after years of use now. For the price and performance and size and appearance, I did not find another option to compete. Maybe two of them in a very large room, as bass is a slower wave, not entirely non directional to listen to, though mostly so. Never have heard a buzz of complaint from these. At their breaking point that are about to hop up and down on the floor, but without audio compromise. There is a low frequency limit for smaller enclosures, but I think these guys are pushing the laws of physics really hard to go as low as is reasonable for the size. Obviously, a big JBL sub will blow out your windows better. But for home use, these will just disappear into a smooth theater experience in about any room, without getting in the way.

I have mine hooked up with an Outlaw 2 channel receiver and a pair of BW 603 speakers. I can tell you if it has DSP and it affects the audio sound, it's never been an issue with my setup. I know this sub sounds fantastic and has never let me down or muddled my music. I've played everything from Bach to Easy E and from Miles Davis to Motley Crue. Not once did this sub sound bad or not provide the required bass for that style of music. Yes there are other "louder" subs out there and many audiophile type subs but for the price and what it accomplishes, this sub is fantastic!

Nothing on the sub allows for disabling the DSP

Q
How do I connect this to my NAD 7400 receiver that has only speaker outputs plus a pre-out and main in connection?

Not 100% sure on your vintage receiver. I looked at a rear pic of your receiver. Seems you only have A & B channels and no "Sub Out". Give Crutchfield a call. They may be able to help. Sorry I couldn't.

If your receiver doesn't have a subwoofer output, you can treat the subwoofer like another speaker and use speaker wire to connect it to the receiver's speaker terminals designated for the front left and right speakers. You would then connect the front left and right speakers to the subwoofer's speaker-level terminals.

Connect receiver pre-out to sub woofer audio in, and sub audio out to receiver main in. Works on my NAD C740.

The subwoofer connects to the amp/receiver with a coaxial cable. It has no speaker wire outs.

Q
Really odd question, but can you remove the feet? For looks my wife prefers that the unit sit on the floor and not elevated.

Hello JP D. The short answer is NO since it needs to be like this in order to perform well. In the base of the subwoofer there is a speaker that is facing the floor so if you remove their feet you will loose the sub sound effect. In addition to that, the feet can't be removed. The sub is very good and sound is great.
