Customer Q&A

Q
What gain setting should I select on my Pro-Ject tube box s2 phono preamp for this cartridge?

A
I have the Sumiko cartridge mounted on an Audio Technica LP 120 turntable which is hooked up to the phono input on a vintage Marantz 2230 stereo receiver. It sounds fantastic. Sorry, I can't give any information how it would work with a separate phono pre-amp.

Q
I own an Onkyo CP-700M turntable sold in the late '70s. Could a Rainier cartridge be installed on the arm, or is my turntable model too old for the Rainier cartridge?
charlie  Feb 15, 2021

A
To my knowledge, the Rainier cartridge is designed to be used in low mass tonearms, such as the Pro-ject arms which have an effective mass of around 6 grams, I believe. Your Onkyo turntable from the late '70's likely has a higher mass tonearm so a cartridge suited to such an arm would be better; Audio Technica or Nagaoka perhaps? Audio Technica, incidentally, were quite helpful when I had a question regarding one of their cartridges. It's a slightly confusing subject of stylus cantilever compliance vs arm mass that if not well matched can cause issues. Incidentally, I wasn't thrilled with the Rainer and found it a little boring sounding and lacking involvement. If you can find out the effective arm mass of your turntable, then with some research you can find good cartridge candidates for it. I hope this helps somewhat.
