Features
Overview: The Signature S950 from Grado Labs is the latest high-end headphone from the new Signature Line, following the highly-successful HP100 SE. The open-back, over-ear headphones feature a beautiful, hand-crafted Brazilian Walnut shell, the first time this family of woods has been used in a Grado headphone. Utilizing different types of woods and other materials allows the headphone to have its own sound signature. Although the S950 has the same 52mm driver as the HP100 SE, the sound waves behave differently inside the wood housing, compared to the machined aluminum of the HP100 SE. Like many of Grado's higher-end series headphones, the Signature S950 is hand-assembled in the Grado Lab facility in Brooklyn, NY.
Driver Design: The Signature S950 features a newly-designed 52mm dynamic "S" driver with a paper composite cone with a high-flux magnetic circuit, rare earth magnets, and a lightweight, copper-plated aluminum voice coil. This large dynamic driver was designed to deliver excellent high-frequency resolution, smooth midrange, and low-distortion bass. Paired with the wooden housing, the drivers provide a more neutral, balanced, and relaxed sound, compared to the HP100 SE. The two drivers are matched to 0.04dB for consistent sound.
Earcup Housings: The rear portion of the earcup housing is hand crafted from Brazilian Walnut, grown in the tropical rainforests of the Amazon. The wood is dense and resistant to decay, making it ideal for headphones. Because the wood doesn't expand and contract from temperature and humidity changes, the housing maintains its acoustical characteristics. The wood grain of each individual hand-crafted housing is different, giving the headphones a unique, one-of-a-kind look. The wooden housings reduce the overall weight of the headphones from 18 to 14 ounces (compared to the HP100 SE), providing a comfortable fit, reducing fatigue during long listening sessions. The front of the earcup housing is constructed of machined aluminum like the HP100 SE.
Cushions: The Signature S950 comes with user-replaceable circum-aural foam G-cushions installed. In addition, a pair of low-profile F-cushions is included for users who want a smaller headphone pad (3" diameter) that provides more of an on-ear fit than an over-ear style.
Detachable Balanced Cable: The Signature S950 comes with a new 12-conductor detachable balanced cable. The included 6-foot cable features a soft, but durable, braided jacket with improved flexibility. The balanced cable is equipped with individual left and right 4-pin mini XLR plugs with black (L) and red (R) sheaths, and is terminated with a straight 4.4mm balanced plug. Having a detachable cable gives the headphone multiple cable options, including a 4-pin XLR balanced cable, or a single-ended (unbalanced) 1/4" (6.3mm) termination.
Headband Assembly: The headphones feature engraved aluminum alloy gimbals with a stainless steel band and height rods that let you adjust the fit. The white-stitched black leather headband now features 50% more padding than previous Grado headphones to provide increased comfort during long listening sessions. The suspension mechanism allows the earcup housings to rotate up to 105° to fit the shape of your head.
