First-class streaming for your high-performance audio system

Bluesound NODE streaming music players have been hugely popular with Crutchfield customers. For their 10th anniversary, Bluesound created this "X" edition, which features some nice perks. It has an upgraded DAC (digital-to-analog converter), a new high-end built-in headphone amp, and a classy silver finish. It even includes a remote control.

Connect the NODE X's analog or digital outputs to your existing receiver or amplifier to make it part of a multi-room Bluesound wireless system. Play high-resolution music stored on your home network, internet radio stations, or your favorite music streaming service.

10th anniversary edition upgrades

In addition to its sleek silver finish, the NODE X features an upgraded ESS Sabre DAC that serves up your tunes with near-zero levels of clock jitter (timing errors), vanishingly low noise and distortion, and a wide dynamic range. It's also got a new THX Achromatic Audio Amplifier (THX AAA™) headphone amp with patented feed-forward error correction, plus a full-sized 1/4" jack on the front panel.

The included Bluesound RC1 remote controls playback, presets, and more — perfect for when your phone isn't handy, or when family members who don't have the app want to control the NODE X (and any other BluOS components in your system).

Getting hands-on with the NODE X

Full disclosure: I've got four BluOS streaming audio components in my house, so I'm partial to their sound. The NODE X has a sleek look, and I wouldn't be disappointed if future Bluesound gear came in this silver finish.

Headphone listening

I was particularly interested in the upgraded headphone amp, and I had some Sennheiser HD 660S2 and Meze 99 Classics on hand for testing. The NODE X drove the lower impedance 99 Classics like a muscle car, perfect for giving Brothers Osborne's Skeletons album the thick yet detailed presentation its electric-guitar-centric country rock deserves. The 660S2S's high impedance also required a higher volume level — which the NODE X easily supplied. They rendered a much more transparent response, perfect for detailed listening of Steely Dan's Aja. A/B-ing both sets of ‘phones with the original NODE clearly demonstrated that the X's headphone amp is a marked improvement, with more power on tap and higher fidelity.

Music in the air

Next, I switched over to listening to the NODE and NODE X connected directly to my Parasound Zamp V2 powering MartinLogan tower speakers, using Tributaries Model 8A MKII RCA cables and Model 6SP-B speaker cables. This configuration shows off the versatility of the player's switchable fixed/variable audio outputs which is an option found in the BluOS app: I didn't need a separate preamp in my setup to control the volume.

Putting the music into the air through my speakers, the difference between the two players was not as dramatic but still easily noticeable. The NODE X has a hotter signal, and I heard clearer nuance and detail and more solidity in the bass. I could also hear more recording studio ambience and higher fidelity all around.

It delivered a rich rendering of Love's Forever Changes, putting Arthur Lee's unique genius on display, whether the tracks featured the hit-machine “wrecking crew” personnel like on “The Daily Planet,” or Love's full membership smoothly pulling off complex arrangements like they do on “Alone Again Or.” the NODE X gave that classic psychedelic '60s stereo mix a smooth-yet-energetic presentation with great separation between the instruments and clear track detail.

A wide variety of music options

The NODE X can play just about any digital music you might have in your collection, including high-resolution files up to 24-bit/192kHz. Access the music stored on your computer or a networked hard drive, or tap into internet radio stations and online streaming services like Spotify®, Pandora, Qobuz, or TIDAL (subscription required for some services).

You can also enjoy downloads from high-res music sites including Qobuz, HDtracks, and more.

Wired and wireless connectivity

The NODE X uses dual-band Wi-Fi to ensure a stable connection to your router and other Bluesound components. You can also make a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection.

Built-in two-way aptX™ HD Bluetooth gives you high-quality sound with compatible devices. You can stream audio to the NODE X via Bluetooth from your smartphone or tablet. And you can stream music from the NODE X to compatible wireless Bluetooth high-performance headphones.

Compatible with AirPlay 2

Built-in Apple AirPlay 2 technology lets you stream audio directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® computer through your Bluesound system. That includes soundtracks from YouTube® videos and Netflix movies.

Intuitive control

You can control the NODE X — and your Bluesound multi-room system — right from your smartphone. Simply download the free BluOS app from the Apple® App Store or Google Play. Plus, the NODE X is compatible with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice controllers (sold separately).

Create a high-resolution multi-room music system

The NODE X can be part of a multi-room audio system. You can connect it wirelessly to Bluesound components in other rooms for high-res music throughout your home. It will also show up in your player list if you're using Roon.

I have edited s3000pro that don't have have a sub output. would this be a work around to be able to use a sub along side of these powered speakers?

A
It's possible, Waylon. You would need to connect the Bluesound NODE X's output to the analog RCA inputs on your Edifier speakers and use the NODE for all music sources. You could then connect a subwoofer to the NODE X for enjoyment with your powered speakers.

Q
Can I plug my cd player into the node x and use the node's dac and node itself as a preamp into my Adcom amplifier? Can one control the volume of the node x output by way of the remote as well?

A
You may connect your CD player via the optical input so that you may take advantage of the NODE X's onboard DAC. You may then control the volume level output to your amplifier via the BluOS app or the included remote.
