About the MartinLogan Motion® XT B100

Eric A.

The MartinLogan Motion XT B100 delivers accurate, detailed sound that's equally effective when you use a pair as front left/right speakers, or as surrounds in a Motion XT home theater system. Like the other speakers in the lineup, it features carefully chosen drivers, an acoustically optimized cabinet, and intelligently designed crossovers. The company calls this their best bookshelf speaker, so you can expect accurate, musical detail.

Upgraded Motion XT® tweeter

MartinLogan's acclaimed Folded Motion XT tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works similarly to an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. The B100's upgraded Gen2 Obsidian version of this tweeter uses larger magnets for greater detail and accuracy. The new design places it inside a custom Folded Motion waveguide that enhances dispersion of high-frequency sound throughout your listening area.

Because it requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, response time is drastically reduced along with distortion. The diaphragm's increased surface area also provides wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and highly accurate soundstage. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness. And the "XT" version of this tweeter that gives the Motion XT series part of its name boasts a 40% larger radiating surface area than MartinLogan's standard Folded Motion design, for even greater bandwidth and efficiency.

Accurate midrange and impactful bass

The B100 boasts a 6-1/2" Nomex-reinforced Kevlar® cone woofer for fast, clean mid/bass performance. The cabinet's rear-firing port helps deliver impactful low end that enhances your experience with music, movies, and gaming.

Matching stands are a must-have for hi-fi performance

Placing the B100s on a solid set of speaker stands can minimize sound-muddying vibrations and allow them to perform as designed. Specifically, we recommend using the matching MartinLogan STAND25 so the speakers will fit on the top plates properly and the tweeters will be placed at approximately the same height as your ears, for the best possible sound.

Placement tip: because the B100s are rear-ported, they'll sound better if you can position them with a little extra space between them and the wall.

Unique crossover network

MartinLogan's proprietary Vojtko™ crossovers are named after MartinLogan's chief audio technologist, Joe Vojtko. The latest Motion XT speakers feature upgraded McCracken-Vojtko crossovers, so named for the influence of the company's other well-known Joe — senior loudspeaker designer Joe McCracken.

No matter what they're called, the aim is always the same: each speaker's drivers are carefully selected or designed to operate within an intentional frequency range and specific performance parameters. That allows the crossover networks — built from high-quality capacitors and resistors — to be clean and uncomplicated, for purer sound.

Features

Thin-Film Technology & Controlled Dispersion: By using advanced Thin-film Technology and Controlled Dispersion, the MartinLogan Motion XT B100 stand-mount loudspeaker delivers excellent high frequency response from its Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter (FMT) XT and Folded Motion Waveguide. The Gen2 Obsidian FMT XT uses a folded thin-film diaphragm to compress and expand air, creating a large surface area that delivers fast, accurate, and detailed high frequency reproduction. The integrated Folded Motion Wave Guide creates Controlled Dispersion to minimizes sound degrading early reflections by controlling the spread of sound from the tweeter into the room, enhancing your listening experience with greater clarity, and expanded placement options in the room.

  • Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter (FMT) XT: The Motion XT B100 features MartinLogan's proprietary Thin-Film Technology, the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter (FMT) XT - measuring 1.25" x 2.4". The Gen2 Obsidian FMT XT Tweeter has been upgraded with a larger motor structure to provide higher output and lower distortion. The FMT XT offers effortless, detailed sound with a 40% increase in surface area compared to MartinLogan's signature FMT. The Gen2 Obsidian FMT XT's upgraded design elevates its performance to new heights for a clean, detailed, and accurate high frequency response.
  • Folded Motion Waveguide: The Folded Motion Waveguide profile was meticulously chosen to harmoniously align the tweeter's output with the dispersion of the midrange/bass driver, resulting in enhanced output. The waveguide guarantees consistent sound quality regardless of the listener's position and minimizes unwanted room reflection for Controlled Dispersion of 90-degrees (h) x 45-degrees (v). Proper waveguide design is crucial as it helps control the sound's dispersion pattern, ensuring that the sound is evenly distributed across the listening area and resulting in optimal sound quality.

Nomex-Reinforced Kevlar Cone Woofer: The Motion XT B100 houses a single 6.5" Nomex-Reinforced Kevlar midrange/bass driver with a rubber surround and cast aluminum basket. The Nomex-Reinforced Kevlar cone woofer offers the perfect balance of lightweight, strength, anti-resonance and anti-ringing properties for unparalleled sound quality. The Nomex-Reinforced Kevlar cone driver is perfectly suited for keeping pace with the Gen2 Obsidian FMT XT, providing clarity of vocals with dialog and instrumental accuracy at any volume level.

McCracken-Vojtko Crossover: Carefully designed using proprietary measurement and simulation software, plus tuned using double-blind listening, the McCracken-Vojtko 2-way crossover perfectly melds the 1.25" x 2.4" Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter XT and 6.5" Nomex-Reinforced Kevlar midrange/bass driver together for a cohesive and beautiful sound.

Bass Reflex MDF Cabinet: The Motion XT B100 stand-mount loudspeaker employs a solid built cabinet design to eliminate fidelity robbing vibrations. The speaker cabinet is constructed from MDF (medium density fiberboard) with an extra-thick front baffle and additional internal bracing to further reduce cabinet resonance. On the back of the cabinet is a rear-firing port which helps the speaker be more efficient and have better bass performance. The cabinet is available in three finishes - Satin White, Walnut Veneer, or Gloss Black.

Dual Binding Posts: The Motion XT B100 is outfitted with two sets of binding posts allowing you to bi-amp or bi-wire the stand-mount loudspeaker. These binding posts ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and bare wire (up to 10AWG).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

Mounting & Placement Options: The Motion XT B100 loudspeaker can be positioned on a sturdy speaker stand (sold separately - see Accessories Tab), tabletop, or other flat mounting surface. MartinLogan's STAND25 (sold separately) is the perfect matching speaker stand for the Motion XT B100 stand-mount speaker, providing an optimized fit and maximum stability. Four rubber feet are included to isolate the speaker from the mounting surface and to protect the mounting surface and speaker from scratches. The feet add approximately 0.25" to the overall height of the speaker.

  • Although the speaker is designed to deliver a superb sonic performance when placed close to a wall, you may notice improved imaging and detail if you are able to place the speaker 2' or more' from the rear wall and 2' or more from the side walls.
  • To achieve the best stereo imaging, a pair of speakers should form an equilateral triangle between each other and the main seated listening position.
  • To enhanced the stereo image even more, you should angle (or "toe-in") a pair of speakers toward the primary listening position.
  • Try to position the speaker so the tweeter is at ear-level in regards to your main listening position when seated.

Note: The Motion XT B100 does not include any brackets, keyhole-slots, or threaded inserts to wall-mount the speaker.

Motion XT Series: The Motion XT line, or "eXTreme" line, is MartinLogan's highest performance tier of their Motion Series speakers. The Motion XT Series of loudspeakers is all about more - more detail, more clarity, and more power. The Motion XT Series pairs high-performance Nomex-Reinforced Kevlar midrange/bass drivers with MartinLogan's highest performance Gen2 Folded Motion XT Tweeter. Through a rigorous development process involving anechoic chamber measurements, blind listening tests, and in room measurements MartinLogan crafted a more refined modern sound for the Motion XT Series that is a whole new level of quality and excellence. The Motion XT Series consists of two floorstanding loudspeakers (XT F100/XT F200), a bookshelf loudspeaker (XT B100), and center-channel speaker (XT C100).

Optional Powered Subwoofer: Add on an optional MartinLogan powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) for bigger and deeper bass response when listening to your movie and music soundtracks.

Customer Q&A

Q
I know this is a very subjective question but I'll ask anyway. I'm pairing my Martin Logan B100s with a Cambridge Audio CXA81 amp. Is this setup a good match? I like to listen to Rock, Alternative and Jazz.
erick  Jul 17, 2023
1 answer
A
According to the Crutchfield website, your Cambridge should push 120 watts into 4 ohms - so that should be plenty to drive these speakers. So, from a compatibility standpoint it should work fine. Whether or not it sounds like a good match - all I can tell you is that I drive my B100's with a Parasound Halo Hint 6 and these speakers sound amazing in all of the genres you mention. I would say, though, that I also have a pair of 8" subs that augment the low end for these, so I would recommend having a sub of some kind.

Q
I have the Martin Logan XT F100, XT C100, and the Dynamo 800. Thinking of adding the XT B100 or the Electrostatic FX2. which one do suggest if I am looking to use more in surround sound environment. I was wondering if I should stick with XT since everything else is XT?
raymond  Mar 29, 2023

A
Greetings Raymond, and thank you for your question. Both options will be a very good sonic match. The FX2 is more a surround speaker, and surround speakers don't have to be a 100% sonic match honestly. The XT B100's are more of a directional stereo listening speaker. Still would work well as a surround, but the better of the two for surround would be the FX2.
