Features
HS-Series Studio Monitors: Yamaha studio monitors are designed to achieve the best possible mix by ensuring that the sound from your speakers is true to the original. HS Series nearfield reference monitors are the embodiment of this philosophy, delivering a concise sound image, high resolution, and flat response.
Two-Way Speaker Design: The HS3 studio monitors feature newly developed transducers that achieve astonishingly smooth response over a wide range of bandwidth. These transducers utilize an advanced magnetic field design that regulates the flow of magnetic response to provide seamless, natural sonic transitions. Each component's materials and design were carefully re-examined, then optimized, to drastically improve the accuracy of signal reproduction throughout the audio spectrum.
- Tweeter: The HS3s feature a newly designed, highly efficient 0.75" dome tweeter that extends the usable frequency range considerably and delivers superb high-resolution sound. Utilizing a thick wave guide designed to minimize vibration the new tweeter is able to deliver smooth, distortion-free high end up to 20 kHz (-3dB).
- Woofer: With a newly designed, ultra-responsive 3.5" woofer that utilizes large, carefully selected magnets, the HS3 studio monitors produce low distortion sound with a well-defined bottom end at any output level. All of the components in this high-power woofer, including the woofer ring and the basket further contribute to the HS3 stunning bass while providing clear, accurate mids.
Amplification: The HS3 studio monitor speakers employ a power amplifier built into the right speaker that powers both speakers, with 20W + 20W (RMS power) and 26W + 26W (dynamic power). The high-quality Class-D amplifier design consistently delivers high-resolution sound with exceptionally flat response across the sound spectrum.
Low Resonance Enclosure Design: The HS3 cabinet is designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosure is constructed from a very dense and highly resilient MDF with a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors. Utilizing Yamaha's proprietary Twisted Flare Port technology, the HS3 can deliver crystal-clear bass with minimal turbulence noise, providing outstanding sound imaging and depth with a flat response across all bandwidths.
Audio Controls (Powered Speaker):
- Power: A rear-panel On/Off rocker switch
- Volume: A front-panel Volume dial adjusts the output level of both speakers
- Room Control: 3-way switch; lets you to attenuate the unnatural, exaggerated low-end that can often occur from reflections or when speakers are placed near walls. Built-in 500Hz high-pass shelving lets you select from 0dB (no filtering), -2dB, or -4dB.
- High Trim: 3-way switch; provides a +2dB boost or -2dB cut at 2kHz, or 0 for no affect on the signal
Inputs:
- Combo Jacks: Left and Right XLR/1/4" TRS combo jacks allow the HS4 studio monitors to accommodate a wide range of balanced and unbalanced sources such as mixers, keyboards, and audio interfaces, with both inputs accepting microphone or line-level signals.
- RCA & 3.5mm: A pair of unbalanced RCA jacks and an unbalanced 3.5mm (1/8") jack let you play audio from a computer, smartphone, MP3 player, or CD player. A 5' 3.5mm-to-RCA cable is provided for connection.
Speaker Connection: Spring-clip terminals on both speakers let you power the left speaker from the amplified right speaker using the provided 8.5' length of speaker wire.
Headphones: A front-panel 1/8" jack on the powered speaker lets you connect a pair of headphones. When plugged in, audio from the speakers will be muted.
Placement: A number of points should be observed when laying out a monitor speaker system.
- Position Speakers Away From Walls or Corners: Ideally, the speakers should be located away from walls or corners to reduce excess bass from reflections. The Room Control switch can help compensate for excessive bass.
- Position Left/Right Speakers Symmetrically: The left and right speakers should be positioned as symmetrically as possible in relation to the room. In other words, the left and right speakers should be the same distance from the rear wall and the respective left and right walls.
- Equilateral Triangle Positioning: For the most accurate sound and balance, position yourself at the apex of a 60° equilateral triangle formed by the left and right speakers and yourself, with the speakers angled inward so that they're facing you.
- Tweeters at Ear Level: High frequencies are quite directional, so for the most accurate monitoring the speakers should be set up so that the tweeters are at approximately the same height as your ears when you're seated at the listening position.
- Optional Sub: Adding a powered subwoofer (like the Yamaha HS8, sold separately) to your monitor system can significantly improve its low-frequency fidelity, making it possible to create better overall mixes.
