About the JBL CBT 50LA-1

James Ralston

Controlled, consistent sound

JBL created their Constant Beamwidth Technology (CBT) series of commercial speakers to deliver the kind of smooth, consistent sound that's often associated with line arrays far more expensive and complex. The compact CBT 50LA-1 locks in and maintains coverage in a precise pattern and over a wide frequency bandwidth. It uses a line array of eight 2" full-range drivers with a passive delay and filter network to achieve uniform, coherent performance. A voicing switch lets you select flat response for music or a midrange presence boost for speech.

Suitable for a wide range of commercial audio applications

The 50LA-1 works well for conference rooms, lecture halls, and houses of worship, as well as outdoor environments. The speaker is rated IP55 for weather resistance, and its relatively compact size means it fits well where other line arrays do not. The included wall-mount bracket offers 80° of swivel left or right and 15° of tilt up or down, for flexible aiming. A built-in 60-watt transformer with a range of tap settings means you can wire multiples of this speaker together in a 70V or 100V distributed audio system.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The JBL CBT 100LA-1 line array column speaker represents the latest generation of pattern-controlled speakers, providing consistent listening-space coverage, superior sound quality, and versatility, for a wide variety of applications. The CBT 50LA-1 is an ideal solution for retail stores, lecture halls, conference rooms, transit facilities, and more. The JBL line array column speaker includes a built-in 70/100V transformer and can also be used in an 8Ω configuration. The CBT 50LA-1 is IP55 rated for outdoor use (with optional terminal cover installed).

Drivers: The JBL CBT 50LA-1 column speaker houses eight 2" high-excursion full-range drivers arranged in a vertical fashion. Each driver features dual neodymium magnets for light weight, while copper caps on the pole-pieces minimize flux modulation and linear inductance, resulting in lower distortion and improved frequency response. Driver surrounds are made with butyl rubber for long life in high-humidity environments.

Dynamic SonicGuard: This feature provides protection for the high-frequency section by limiting driver excursion dynamically. SonicGuard protects the drivers from damage due to occasional overpowering, while maximizing music clarity and speech intelligibility at high drive levels.

Constant Beamwidth: Incorporating JBL's Constant Beamwidth Technology, the line array column speaker utilizes analog delay beam-forming and amplitude tapering to provide consistent vertical coverage without the narrow vertical beaming and out-of-coverage lobing that are typical in straight column speakers.

Coverage Area: The CBT 50LA-1 can provide 150˚ of horizontal coverage (1kHz - 4kHz, ±20˚), and 20˚ of vertical coverage (1.5kHz - 16kHz, ±10˚).

Variable Voicing: The CBT 50LA-1 provides 2 voicing types that can be set using the Music/Speech dial located on the enclosure's lower side-panel. The Music setting provides a flat frequency response, while the Speech setting adds a mid-range presence boost. This provides increased midrange sensitivity for higher midrange output and clear, intelligible speech, even at the longest throw distances.

70/100V: The Line array column speaker features a built-in 60W transformer for 70 or 100V operation, and includes an 8Ω bypass setting. A tap setting dial on the lower side-panel provides the following tap settings:

  • 70V: 7.5W, 15W, 30W, 60W
  • 100V: 15W, 30W, 60W
  • 8Ω: Bypass

Outdoor Use: The CBT 50LA-1 is designed to be installed either indoors or outdoors. The enclosure is made from fiberglass reinforced ABS, coated with UV resistant paint, and includes a painted aluminum grille. All drivers are weather-treated for protection from moisture, UV rays, and salt spray. An optional MTC-PC2 panel cover (sold separately) can seal the terminal compartment from excessive moisture, giving the line array column speaker an IP55 rating.

Mounting: The JBL line array column speaker includes a wall-mount bracket that can provide up to ±80˚ of swivel and up to ±15˚ of tilt. Tilt adjustment includes the option for either continuously variable or using one of the 5˚ fixed increment slots. The amount of allowable swivel will vary depending on which mounting holes are used and how much tilt is applied. Please see installation guide for a complete list of allowable tilt/swivel adjustments. Ten threaded M6 mounting points along the back panel offer a wide variety of spacing patterns for the included bracket, as well as for common third-party mounting brackets. These threaded mounting points can also be used for suspending the speaker (hardware not included).
