Audio-Technica ATH-M40x
Crutchfield customer from OMAHA, NE on 6/22/2023
I have 4 or 5 Audio-Technica headphones in the last 15 years....always great sound....but crap, on my new pair, now they use a NON-STANDARD cord connector! STUPID MOVE from a customer point of view! My only choice is to deal with their 3m cord (too long), and be sure to not lose it, and always drag it around from place to place with the headphones. I should have noticed that detail in the advertising photos. I would have passed. I'll be shopping for a short adaptor now. 1/4" Stereo and 1/8" mini are so common! What's this new plug called???

Great look, great fit, and great sound! The headphones go perfectly with my vintage receive and vintage turntable, and they are a great value. Of course, my wife makes fun of me and my "old-school" headphones. Then again, she makes fun of more than a few things I buy or think about buying, so it's all good!

Best headphones you can get at this price.
Ronald from CRYSTAL LAKE, IL on 9/13/2022
I've heard a lot of good things about the Audio-Technica ATH-40x over the years, so when I needed closed-back headphones for myself, I finally decided to buy a pair for myself. Without exception, these are the BEST out-of-box headphones I've ever owned, regardless of price or type. I own a LOT of headphones, most are open-back, and I've enjoyed them. But all of my open-back headphones need some EQ help, if not tone controls, to get them sounding their best. But when I took the ATH-M40x out of the box, and plugged them in for the first time, there was a big, sloppy smile on my face, as they sounded PERFECT without any need for adjustments. They are surprisingly neutral, lively headphones, with great bass response and very pleasing highs. They are not the least bit boomy, but are very well balanced, regardless of the the type of music or use you put these through. I have a a 30 track playlist that I put all my new audio equipment through, and these headphones aced every single song with ease. The quality of the sound is just amazing for this price point. I cannot recommend these highly enough, certainly the best return on investment I've ever made on audio equipment. And they are very easy to drive: plugging them into a smart phone, tablet, or laptop will provide PLENTY of volume without the need for an external amplifier. Best of all, I've never need to create a special EQ file for these, or mess with the tone controls.
Pros: Very lively sound, easy to drive, excellent bass, outstanding value.
Cons: Not the most comfortable headphones I own, but good enough for long listening.

Crutchfield customer from Southern California on 4/29/2021
The headband is pretty firm and hurts the top of my head after a couple hours. I bought these for listening to music while working at the desk, and I will say these are not really the best for that. That is my fault though, I should have paid attention to what their intended purpose is. They are quite flat, but with a digital equalizer app on Mac I was able to get them sounding good enough for my use. Decent build quality for the price.
Pros: Ear cups are comfortable, long cables included, they look nice, not too heavy
Cons: Uncomfortable head band, too flat for casual listening

uncomfortable
Crutchfield customer from Rocklin, CA on 7/25/2020
These sound great and seal off outside noise very well. I use them for recording so I'm happy with them for that. The down side is I find them to be pretty uncomfortable, they aren't quite big enough to fit over my ears so they hurt after a short time. I had some sony mdr7506 before and they were much more comfortable but the sound wasn't quite as good.

Bass too loud and uncomfy on ears
Steven from WHITE ROCK, NM on 6/26/2020
Bass is really too much - sounds like woomp woomp. Also squeezes a bit hard on the ears. To compare, I had a pair of AKG K 141 MK II headphones that developed a lose connection after about 8 months, and Crutchfield doesn't sell them anymore. So I tried these for the same price as the AKG and immediately I noticed the loud bass, and after about a few minutes became a little uncomfortable to wear. That might be because they're closed cup and those have to be tight to make a seal. The AKG were semi open. I also compared against a Koss Pro 4AA Titanium.
Pros: Better than nothing.
Cons: Bass too loud, squeezes on ears.

these are pretty good headphones all in all. the highs could be a bit better, but i was having a hard time finding a pair that my husband was happy with as far as bass. these have plenty of bottom without going too far. and the price is really reasonable for what you're getting. these headphones are worth giving a shot!!

You can't beat these headphones for the money. They have a nice overall sound...the midrange is warm and not bright. I listened to the m50x but felt the midrange was too bright and irritating at times. I like the sound of the m40x much better...they also sound better than my grado sr80's. The build quality is also very good. I highly recommend these headphones.
Pros: excellent headphones for the money

Pleasantly Surprised!
Chris from Carrollton, GA on 8/5/2017
My Five Star Rating Is Based On "Sound Value!" Flat? Nope. Most Comfortable I Own? Nope. With This In Mind For Less Than $100.00 They're Still Exceptional Closed Back Cans. The Bass From My Laptop's Realtek Output Sounds Bloated, Mids Are Decent, And Top End Has Some Sizzle. Mating Them With A Decent Source Pays Off. Using An Inexpensive SoundMagic XS Reins In The Bass and Tames The Sizzle. Plug Them Into A Schiit Modi/Magni Uber Stack With Some HD Flac Files And You'll Start Questioning Just "How Much Better" Some Of Your Much More Expensive Cans Really Sound. I Could Nit Pick, But For The $$$, I Ain't Going There. If You're Considering Full Size Headphones These Are An Excellent Place To Start Or Replace Your Older Cans With. Given A Proper Source I Believe You'll Be Pleasantly Surprised With How These Compare With Much More Expensive Cans. If You're Going To Spend More, Consider The NAD Viso HP50.
Pros: Fed Properly, They Have A Non Fatiguing Sound. (Huge Benefit) They Perform Well Above Their Modest Price
Cons: Fresh From The Box They're A Bit Snug. Bass Heavy With Some Sources. They Won't Dazzle You A Huge Soundstage. For Me, Their Fit Is More Like An On Ear Type.

Nice neutral sounding headphone, well worth the price. Docked a star for not including a short 5-6 foot cable, like with the M50x. I was a little concerned at first, they felt tight on my 23" in round head, but they loosened up and are comfortable now.

Christmas gift for my wife who is a singer. She says great accurate sound ...but they squish her head. She prefers the AKG they have in the studio. More money. Returning.
Pros: Great sound. Noise canciling. Accurate maybe a smidgen bass-y. not a bad thing
Cons: Squish head. Not comfortable to wear.

Great Headphones on a Budget!
Jackson from Tacoma, Washington on 11/29/2016
Wonderful Headphones. I've using the headphones for a month or two now and I am SO GLAD I didn't buy the cheaper 30x. On day 4 I bent the included coiled cable. I ordered a 1.2M braided 3rd party cable which I am still using. The headset is lightweight and fairly compact. It feels a little cheap with a full plastic build that sounds hollow. It sounds great, best inexpensive over ear I've used yet.
Pros: Great Sound, Design, Size and Price.
Cons: Build Quality, Included cable to long for phones.

Decent Headphones
Ozz from plattsburgh, NY on 1/29/2016
I bought these mainly for my small "home studio", as the semi-open cans I had bled into the vocal mic a lot. I was also having trouble getting mixes to translate well to other systems with the monitors I was using (good monitors, but, probably just not set up optimally). These keep mic bleed to a minimum when doing vocals, and I actually did a couple of remix experiments, and though still not perfect, they translated much better to other systems...so that alone made them worth the price to me. They seem to be built well, and are comfortable for me to wear. Overall, I would buy them again.....glad I picked them over the next model up...which are supposed to be VERY nice as well, but I've heard not quite as accurate or neutral for mixing. (Not sure how neutral THESE really are, but my mixes came out much better....so whatever you call it....I like it :-) )
Pros: Well built, comfortable, seem accurate....good for recording to avoid bleed. Comes with a couple different cords...
Cons: For just listening to music, I like open back better, but that's just me.....for what I bought them for, they're great.

Nice headset but a little warm
MS from California on 12/28/2015
After using it for a few weeks, I have to say the sound quality is excellent, neutral and clear without too much booming bass. It's great for classic music or vocals. The high and mid are phenomenal. It does get kind of warm after awhile so will likely not a good choice for hot and humid climate. Can't imagine wearing this in the summer, even in California. May be because of my glasses, the headphone does pinch a little, causing slight discomfort after prolong use. I'd have to shift or adjust the position now and then. Although not a noise canceling headphone, it does block out some surrounding ambient noise. Built quality is excellent, feels robust.
Pros: Fantastic neutral sound and clarity
Cons: Warm, pinches

Great headphones that is well balanced and easy on your ears. Everything is more rich and nothing overpowers one another. If you listen to hiphop/rap and love huge bass that this is not for you. Don't get me wrong the M40 has bass but its much more well rounded not overpowering. Great headphones for a great price. I might upgrade to the M50x during Christmas.
