First Pair
Shirley from Moorpark, CA on 9/13/2023
So this is my first pair of over-the-ear wired headphones with a closed back. I love the feeling of being immersed in sound and not disturbing anyone. Voice is clear and music comes through balanced. I gave it a 4 star because even though it is very comfortable, it does not squeeze my head enough so it slides a bit. I made adjustments.

Diamond Without The Rough
james from KLAMATH FALLS, OR on 11/1/2022
"Bang for the buck" is an understatement for these gems. Many have criticized them for not being "flat" in the frequencies, but you can EQ out the boosts you don't want. The boosts actually sound great on 70's rock. I'm using them exclusively for playback of mint vinyl through a vintage Marantz receiver, and could not be more satisfied...... especially for the cost. The earcups are articulating and very comfortable, if a little tight on the head...... but mine are new, so I expect they'll loosen eventually. Of course, the Crutchfield Experience was premium, as always.
Pros: Exquisite sound, very comfortable, insanely economical for what you get.
Cons: A little tight-fitting right out of the box.

My Gateway to HiFi
Ken from Escanaba, MI on 10/23/2022
These were my first set of "professional grade" headphones, and they were purchased to be used to learn how to record music at home during the lockdowns. Not much music got recorded... but I started listening to music A LOT more once I tried these. Sound Quality My mind was blown when I first listened to some of my favorite albums through the M50x's. Everything seemed so much clearer, more detailed and full of life. Some folks slam these for having too much treble and bass. Personally, I find them to be very pleasing in both respects. Neither are overpowering. The bass adds a lot more fun to most of what I listen to. As far as treble, I'm fairly sensitive (I can hear a flyback transformer on CRT TVs and monitors), and these are fine. I'm fairly new to HiFi audio, but I do know I like these! Build and Comfort I wear glasses, and these feel just fine, even for a few hours. They're made from a lot of plastic, but the plastic feels very sturdy. They also have the right amount of padding right where I would need it. I also appreciate the detachable cables. Weakness My only issue is the crappy bag that they come with. I ended up buying a $15 LTGEM case for these.
Pros: Comfort, build quality, sound, detachable cable, portability
Cons: Crappy bag

I think the headphones should be able to lock and swivel, not just swivel and the pads should be made with softer material. The plastic ear pads are a cheap look and feel on the ear, the sound is quality.

Have been using an earlier variation of this same model for years now and decided to pick up another pair. My old set is hard wired but this new set now has 3 cords which adds more flexibility. Still sounds great though. I was a little concerned about the cords staying attached to the headphones, but they actually have a twist to lock feature which makes it impossible for the cord to simply become detached without intentionally unlocking. Made me feel a lot better.

Sweet Cans
Michael from Houston, TX on 5/4/2022
Outstanding clarity and fidelity - from the lowdown growl of Jack Bruce's bass in Cream's version of "Born Under a Bad Sign" to the tinkle of every ice cube throughout Hendrix's "My Friend", these phones are sweet. No frequency range overpowers any other. The fit is very pleasant: full coverage around the ears and snug, but not uncomfortable, to keep everything in place. The headband and earcup padding are soft. After just a few hours of use I can say they have the truest and most faithful sound reproduction of any headphones I've ever owned. And over 50 years I've owned a LOT!
Pros: Very nice price. The three included detachable cables make this versatile.
Cons: The included carry pouch is too small for my taste, even with everything folded. It would be sufficient for a few accessories, though.

Thomas from HOT SPRINGS on 12/22/2021
They are nice headphones but sound a little too high pitched when I plug them into my Yamaha RS700. It just seems the treble kind of flutters and is not super clear. I like them over all and since they are affordable I'll keep them. The bass is really good and maybe the treble will settle down after I've used them a while. I wrote this review while listening to SiriusXM and now I'm switching to my new Yamaha CD S303 for the second part. As I suspected, REO Speedwagon You Get What You Play For cd sounds great. It must of been the SiriusXM docking station but with my Yamaha RS 700, CD S303 and DBX 1215 eq these headphones kick serious ass! Tons of bass and treble is nice and clear even loud. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these killer headphones! One last thing to review, the db reading loud and clear is 97.5 db and that's about all my ears can take. There is no distortion and clear at this level.
Pros: Everything, these are great headphones even when turned up still nice and clear!
Cons: I wish the cord was permanently attached to the headset. I'm not having a problem with the detachable cable but prefer hardwired.

Comfort/Sound/Price
Crutchfield customer from Covington, WA on 6/27/2021
I read the reviews of these and many others models before purchasing. The ATH-M50X has great construction the swivels allow the ear pieces to sit at a comfortable position and they cover my ears without pressing on them and making them hurt as smaller ones do. I found the head band to have plenty but not to much tension for my liking. They give a clear unaltered or distorted sound. I find myself listening to my headphones as a natural or neutral example over the several sets of speakers I have. When listening to vocals or spoken word I find more clarity with these headphones. I haven't tried headphones more expensive but after these I don't see the need to throw more money at something I am perfectly happy with.
Pros: Comfortable for long periods, Good Quality and Sound, Great Price
Cons: Haven't any, Should have bought them sooner.

Steve from The Colony, TX on 6/23/2021
Great sound. My first complaint is that the headband hurts the top of my head after about 30 minutes. The only way to reduce the discomfort is to loosen the headband, but then the headphones tend to shift around if I'm sitting up. The solution to mitigate discomfort is to lay down when listening to music. The only other complaint is the material on the headband deteriorated after about one year of use so I pealed it off. It looks bad cosmetically. So far the material on the ear cups has held up fine.

Great Headphones!
Crutchfield customer from Evansville, IN on 12/5/2020
Prior to purchasing these, I was using a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones. While the Sony headphones produced good sound quality, I always thought they felt a little flimsy and would easily slip off my head while practicing with my band or recording. With the Audio-Technica's, I don't have that problem. Not only do they produce detailed, crisp sound, but they are very comfortable. The overall build seems very durable and perfectly suited for prolonged use, whether in the studio or during practice sessions. The Sony's aren't terrible, but now that I've been using the ATH-M50x for just over two weeks, I realize that I should have made this switch a long time ago. These are fantastic headphones.
Pros: Excellent sound quality Very Comfortable Good sound isolation Durable

After researching headphone reviews, I selected the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. My quest in any audio equipment is for units with a flat response curve. Realizing that the way that we all perceive sound is unequal, selection is still unpredictable. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x suits my needs perfectly. Good bass without being artificial, level response in mid and high frequencies. I, personally, am entirely happy with the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x.

I bought these to replace a pair of Bose headphones I owned for years and really liked. I checked a lot of reviews of various models of headphones online, and decided with the free shipping and good warranty, these would most likely be the right choice. I was very happy when I got them properly hooked up and tested them out. They have all the detail I was used to in the Bose, plus deeper bass and a wider sound stage. They are also very sensitive, doesn't take a lot to drive them to nice levels. They are a bit heavy and can get slightly uncomfortable after long periods, but overall I really like them. and can see how they earned their reputation.
Pros: Great sound, deep bass, good detail and a wide sound stage.
Cons: Can get slightly tight after extended listening requiring taking them off for a break every so often.

Crutchfield customer from Charlotte, NC on 1/19/2020
Was expecting some great sound and comfort based on all the rave reviews I read on line. While the sound was bit better than my old Sony MDR-CD6 phones, I was disappointed. The mids were not as detailed as I had hoped and the bass was too dominant for my tastes. Just as importantly the ATHs were not comfortable. After about 10-15 minutes I was thankful to get them off. I have a small head and I felt the clamping force was far too much. I am returning these as I have already purchased another headphone. While my new headphones also have a bit more bass than I am accustomed to, it is a bass that I look forward to hearing and a bass that adds to the listening experience rather than dominating it. I can also wear my new phones for several hours without any discomfort. Thanks Crutchfield for your generous returns policy.
Pros: Many favorable reviews and generous accessories
Cons: Bass dominant but not a good bass for me. Clamping force is too great making them very uncomfortable.

I purchased these Audio-Technical ATH-M50x headphones, for watching movies in bed, so the sound wouldn't disturb my wife. At this price point, I didn't expect to much in the way of comfort and sound performance. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The sound is awesome and they are quite comfortable to wear for a long period of time. I would not hesitate to recommend these Audio-Technical headphones to any of my friends. I mainly use these for watching movies on my tablet. The only downside is the cord could be 5 or 6 inches longer. I could have probably gone with wireless headphones, but wasn't sure they would be compatible with my Amazon Tablets. BTW the dialogue is much easier to understand using headphones. The shipping and service from the folks at Crutchfield was absolutely outstanding as usual. Fred Neslage

I'm glad audio technica came out with the 3 cord option. I have the older model which comes with the long cord. It is convenient for home listening but not for taking it on the road. The quality of the build and the crisp sound is unsurpassed in this price range. If you have never listened to the m50's, you have been missing out. They're here! They arrived in perfect condition today. Very luxurious and comfortable compared to my more modestly priced previous Sennheiser headphones. They're terrific, so much better than what I had before. I'm going to make mashed potatoes from the starch packing peanuts. (just kidding). The sound is a quantum leap past my previous phones. I will write another review in a few weeks after I've upgraded the sound card in my computer. I'm thinking I want to get a separate headphone amp now. I think I might need more power. clear and detailed sound
Nick from Wood Ridge, NJ on 10/20/2018
decided to give these a try after not having much luck with bt headphones in this price range. sound is clear and detailed with no polluted extra bass. choice of 3 detachable cords is a great idea, should be standard on all headphones. comfort needed some tweaking, had to add half inch of padding to headband. Also did the sock hack on ear pads as they seal pretty tight and caused sweating/ stickiness on the ears. lastly the initial clamping pressure is pretty high, so to gently expand these I bought a bag of balloons filled the first one to about the size of my head and placed headphones on it. then every 3-4 days I would make the next balloon 1 inch bigger. now I am able to wear these comfortably for hours.
Pros: sound warm and detailed, choice of 3 cords
Cons: weight, cheap protective bag, needs extra headband cushion

Ordered these base on other reviews and pricing. They sound great and fit well very comfortable to wear. They are not heavy on bass and are perfect for listening to older Classic Rock on vinyl, they do deliver a nice clean bass line and range through mid & high ranges! Very good quality for a good price.
Pros: Clean sound through all ranges.

I have been using Sennhausier 280's for the last 10 years, and I thought it was time for a change. I am a shift worker and I listen to my music and movies through headphones when everyone in the house is asleep. Man oh man what a upgrade, I love the sound, with movies or music! And with my AVR or my phone, these sound awesome. They are comfortable and I like the fact that the cord can be detached, plus the carrying case comes in handy as well. My son has a pair of 299.00 Beats, and in my humble opinion these sound better, the bass is tight not boomy. I think for 169.00 they'll run against Beats Any day! Save your money and get these, they are worth every penny
Pros: Great sound for the money Very comfortable Comes with multiple cords and a nice carrying case Dealing with Crutchfield is easy, as always!
Cons: None what so ever

Great headphones for the money. These headphones are comfortable, sound good, and basically do everything I expect them to do at their price range. The only negative I can think of is that they get a little heavy on the head after a while, but you can't ask for perfection at this price.
Pros: Comfortable, good sound, and good value.
Cons: Slightly on the heavy side.

Had to give them five stars because they sound great - particularly sharp with increased volume (as compared with another brand of headphones I have)! I will say, though, that they are very large - if you have a smaller head, you probably want to look for something different. But these will be good around the house.

great purchase
Mike from McLean, VA on 5/11/2017
Fantastic sound! Even lossy/compressed mp3s sounds pretty darn good! I love the fact that they dampen noise quite well without actually being noise cancelling. I am an audiophile at heart (who has not invested tens of thousands in audiophile equipment), and these headphones were a great purchase. The headphones do fold flat, but they are still a little bulky to be considered portable unless you have lots of room in your backpack and are really addicted to nice headphones. But they are perfect for sedentary music listening. They are a bit heavy on my head and my ears get a big warm after listening for an hour. (Could be that i have a small head). A 4.5 star rating would be ideal.
Pros: Fantastic sound!
Cons: A little heavy on my head after an hour of listening.

Great buy!
JR from Honolulu, HI on 5/9/2017
Needing some over the ear headphones, I turned to this set based on the reviews and how long they've been in production. It's always hard to buy something that you cannot try in person, so this was an iffy situation for me. But, I knew that based on the reviews, it would be a great buy. People have different ears and what sounds good to them is totally based on what they've heard in the past, etc. That said, I think that the ATH-M50X's sound really great. People say that it has a neutral sound. I don't really agree. This pair is definitely not "flat" in the tone at all. If you're looking for bass heavy headphones, this is not the one to buy. There is adequate bass that is there, just not overpowering and in your face with artificial boost. No, those are other headphones. The highs (treble) is great as well. The clamping force of the headband isn't tight at all. After a few hours of listening, you don't notice them and they don't feel tight or will give you a headache. I loved the detachable cable connector and the included pouch to slip them into. They also collapse smaller so this is great when traveling. The noise isolation (via the super padded ear cups) is not bad at all. With the music volume at the correct level, you'll drown out the ambient sound. All in all, an excellent sounding set of headphones with an excellent price. Highly recommended as an entry into the headphone market!
Pros: Excellent sound quality, bass, highs, detachable cable, affordable, comfortable to wear
Cons: None

Closed-back vs Open-Back
Neil from Grand Rapids, MI on 3/26/2017
After owning a pair of open-back Grados for years, I ordered the ATH-M50Xs. They're preferable to the Grados for phone and computer listening, as they offer highly detailed sound and comfort, and can be used without people around me hearing every note of what I'm listening to. They also provide more volume on those devices than the relatively low-efficiency Grados. On my home stereo, it's a toss up. When volume's not an issue and they can both be cranked up, I'm still debating which style I prefer. The ATHs provide more bass thump and a brighter high end; the Grados have a flatter, possibly more accurate, and wider soundscape. I think I'll continue to use both of them.
Pros: Very comfortable to wear for a long time, excellent sound. The three cord choices. Great service and price from Crutchfield.
Cons: Closed back means a narrower soundscape compared to my open back pair.

I bought these headphones for quality sound and good isolation. I don't need active noise cancellation, just reasonably good ambient noise suppression. Sound is quite adequate, but highs are slightly bright and from lower midrange on down, somewhat foggy. These phones are satisfactory for travel purposes, but I would not use them for critical listening to classical music. Comfort is good, but I'd prefer a little more clearance around the ears. Among the cords supplied, the short cord with the mini jack is perfect for travel and using a small digital player.

Scott from Dayton, OH on 9/6/2016
These things have an amazing sound - very crisp and clear, and a good amount of bass. I'm hearing details in songs that I never noticed in my old Sony headphones. They get a little uncomfortable to wear after many hours (I wear them pretty much all day at work), but that's probably to be expected. And as always, buying from Crutchfield was a no-brainer. These guys rock!
Pros: Sound great, lots of bass, quality construction

These headphones offer a robust, natural well balanced sound across the audio spectrum. They are also quite comfortable on the head and the ears. They are likely one of the best values in a studio type headphone. They come with a case, a 10' coiled cord, a 10' straight cord, and a 4' personal use cord. The 2 year warranty is also above average. I added a 6' extension cord so I could comfortably be seated on a couch in my listening area.

Well worth the price
Jay from Ft Lauderdale, FL on 6/6/2016
These are a good, solid choice for headphones under $200. I use them exclusively in the house so the "coolness factor" isn't an issue (nor should it be anyway IMO). As for the performance, the ATH-M50x faithfully reproduces the music without a lot of fuss or bother. I never get the impression that the headphones are either enhancing nor subtracting from the source material. While this is a desirable goal you should be aware that this transparency will also reveal shortcomings in the original recording, especially in compressed files. I am sure that there are "better" headphones to be had at higher price points but I am very happy with these both in terms of performance and comfort.
Pros: overall performance
Cons: ear pads tend to get a bit too warm after a time

Amazing sounding headphones
Cliff from Alabama on 12/12/2015
These Headphones sound great. A good value for the money. The bass is fantastic. I'm using them with a DAC and my computer. There is one issue, and Crutchfield is working on correcting it. The headphones come with three cords. Two of the cords have mini stereo plugs, one short and one long. The short one works fine but the longer one had an issue right out of the box. The sound cut in and out. A simple call to Crutchfield has a replacement on the way.
Pros: Good value for the money. Good sound, hefty bass.
Cons: A problem with one of the cords, but Crutchfield is sending a replacement.

Nice headphones
Dan from Tennessee on 12/3/2015
Excellent headphones for this price. Very high sound quality. They are a bit easy in the way they flop around in any direction, think that could be a little more pressure needed to adjust, they are a bit "loose" in that way, is the only reason for the 2 four star ratings. I also needed an extension cord, 1/4" of good quality, so that cost more. Still, I have listened to 200 dollar headphones that sound no better than these. Hope they last.
Pros: Excellent sound quality, easy feel and fit, cancels all but high noise, lightweight.
Cons: Easy to flop off when adjusting, need to hold in place better with adjustments. Needs to stay adjusted while off.

The Go-To Closed-Backs
Matthew from Virginia on 11/7/2015
When I decided I wanted to nice headphones, I discussed it with a friend who knew a lot about this topic. After I told him I wanted Sennheisers, he let me listen to everything he had, and I eventually decided on the Grado sr80. When I went to Crutchfield, Jon was very helpful and knowledgeable when figuring out what I needed. Since I was using these in an office setting, we decided the Grados were not the way to go since they are open backed. I didn't want to spend much, so it was between the Sennheiser 280 and the Audio Technicas. After listening to them, there was no way I could go with the Sennheisers. The sound was just very lacking, but that seems to simply be the Sennheiser style, which may work for certain settings and music. The M50x cancels out sound pretty well, doesn't leak much, and has great sound quality. They're comfortable, and it's nice they come with 3 different cords (short, long, and curly ones). I'm really satisfied with them, and I'm really happy I spent the money on them. In the future, I will absolutely buy the Grado sr80 for quieter listening and whatnot. The sound quality is just incredible. But when in need of some closed back cans, the Audio Technica M50x is the way to go.
Pros: Sound quality Comfortable Blocks out sound well

Great cans!!
Luke from Charlotte, NC on 5/19/2015
I was shopping for nearly a year before I finally settled on these headphones. I was looking for something that had a good balance and sounds great for the type of music I listen to (hard rock and heavy metal). These headphones do not disappoint. There is no active noise cancelation with these headphones, so if you put them on with no music, you can still hear external sounds. Now pump some music through them, and most external noises go away. I say most because I haven't tried these out on an airplane yet. The first song I tested on these was Lamb of God's "Blacken The Cursed Sun". For the first time since I've been listening to this song, these headphones picked up background sound effects and echos in the intro that I never heard before. It was like I was hearing the song for the first time. The bass on the songs is strong but not overpowering. The mids were clean and crisp, and the highs were bright but not overwhelming. These are very balanced headphones and I'm looking forward to rocking out in these for years to come.
Pros: Great sound Durable Options for cord length Easy to fold and store Price
Cons: The case is a little flimsy (just a leather bag - would have liked a hard shell case) Headphones do feel warm after a couple of hours usage Not exactly stylish and do have a little 80s throwback to them; however, for what I need them for, style is not a strong factor in my purchase

The ATH-M50x are nice headphones, but I didn't enjoy the sound quality. The bass was boomy and somewhat loose, and the lower mids were recessed. Pros: Comfort and build quality

Jason from Minnesota on 2/25/2015
Wow so, I did a lot of research online before I finally decided to purchase these headphones, and I must say, every one that I read recommended these cans, and I can see why. These things sound amazing, especially compared to my older Bose on-ear headphones. The soft cushions envelope my ears and do a good job sealing out unwanted noise, the sound is crisp and clean even at loud volume, and the build quality is excellent as they feel and look solid yet cool and comfortable to wear through long gaming sessions or just rocking out to some music. The 3 included cables are awesome and just what I was looking for, and more, since they are long and made to last. This is my first pair of Audio-Technica headphones and I recommend them myself.
Pros: Comfortable, Great Sound, Sturdy Solid Build, Long Thick Cables
Cons: Only con I can think of is the carrying bag is a little small for these big cans and all 3 cables to be packed into, but it is useful and a good addition to the purchase.
