About the Fusion MS-RA70

Jon Paul

Go-anywhere audio

The MS-RA70 digital media receiver gives you the functionality and marine-rated reliability Fusion is known for, now in a receiver that fits into a standard DIN-sized opening when used with the Fusion MS-RA70DC DIN cage (sold separately).. This versatile digital media receiver is an ideal choice for your boat, of course, but it can also be used in select off-road vehicles.

Lots of entertainment options

The MS-RA70 gives you plenty of entertainment options. You can enjoy your favorite AM/FM stations or connect an MP3 player to the USB port, but built-in Bluetooth® connectivity is what makes this receiver truly special. Just download the free Apple® or Android™ Fusion-Link remote control app for Bluetooth from iTunes™ or Google Play™. With the app installed, you can enjoy source navigation and track selection from wherever you are on your boat or in your campsite. Intuitive controls make it easier to manage your music when you're underway.

Get into a zone

Independent audio zone control is a handy thing to have on any boat. The MS-RA70 offers advanced localized menu controls, including zone naming, so you'll be able to customize and control the listening experience in each zone. Two stereo preamps and a sub-out in each zone ensure outstanding performance and expandability.

Ready for your boat or off-road vehicle

The 2" tall chassis means you can install the MS-RA70 in a wide variety of vehicles on land and sea. The designers came up with a clever solution that lets you mount the receiver in the dash or integrate it into a glass helm using a flush surface mount. Wherever it winds up, this rugged receiver will stand up to whatever wind and weather Mother Nature brews up.

Installation notes: Even though this marine receiver is considered "DIN-sized", it's not quite as wide as a standard DIN receiver. It also does not include a mounting sleeve or ISO-mount screw holes to accommodate the DIN cutout in a standard marine installation. You'll need the Fusion MS-RA70DC DIN cage (sold separately) for these installations. We also recommend mounting it in a water-resistant enclosure or using a receiver cover for best performance.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

This marine digital media receiver will not play CDs.

    Marine & Mounting Features

Marine Certified: The Fusion MS-RA70i is designed and engineered specifically for use on the water, and complies with both IPx3 & iPx7 water resistant standards.

    • iPx3 Glass-Filled Composite Chassis: Structurally rigid and incredibly lightweight, the unit's glass-filled composite chassis improves environmental protection and electrically isolates the chassis for complete reliability with an iPx3 rating. The receiver's chassis also features an aluminum side-fin heat sink with VCT cooling, removing the need for an external cooling fan.
    • iPx7 Front-Panel & Optically Bonded LCD: With an IPx7 front-panel and an optically bonded LCD to improve durability and optimize daylight viewing, the MS-RA70i is ready for the marine environment. You can adjust the brightness & contrast of the LCD. The LCD screen's backlight turns offs after approximately 60 seconds of inactivity to reduce battery drain; press any key on the unit to restore the backlight.

Mounting Options: The Fusion MS-RA70i marine receiver requires a rectangular cutout in bulkhead of your boat, vessel, or watercraft. Four screws (supplied) fasten the receiver's faceplate and gasket against the mounting surface on either side of the cutout opening to secure the unit in place. You can even remove the receiver's pre-installed trim-ring and flush mount the receiver for a stunning glass helm finish. If your boat already has a cutout opening for a "DIN-sized" radio, then the Fusion MS-RA70DC mounting sleeve (sold separately) is required to mount the unit.

    • Chassis or Cutout Width = 6.375"
    • Chassis or Cutout Height = 1.9375"
    • Cutout Depth = 4.0"
    • Nose Width = 7.4375"
    • Nose Height =  2.375"
    • Nose Depth = 1.0"
    • Screw Hole Spacing = 6.8125" (w) x 1.5625" (h)

Note: This unit will not fit in standard automotive "single-DIN" installations because it lacks required hardware and its front-panel (face-plate) is too large.

    Variety of Sources

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The MS-RA70i marine stereo features built-in Bluetooth 2.0 with support for wireless music streaming from almost any Bluetooth-enable device. The Fusion MS-RA70i supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled device. The MS-RA70i will wirelessly playback stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth device. The unit will also be able to control basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause & Skip Next/Previous. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. In addition, song/artist information is displayed on the receiver's LCD screen.

Note: This unit does not support Bluetooth hands-free communication for making and answering phone calls.

USB Mass Storage Devices: The Fusion MS-RA70i marine stereo features a rear-panel USB (type-A) port which enables connection of USB mass storage class (MSC) devices like a USB thumbdrive, flash drive, or MSC compatible audio player formatted in FAT32. You can insert a compatible USB MSC device into the head unit's USB port for playback of MP3 music files with Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Random/Repeat control, plus song/artist info. Each folder on the storage device can contain a maximum of 250 MP3 files. When the MS-RA70i is turned on, USB devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the receiver's USB port (max. 1A).

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0): The Fusion MS-RA70i supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the unit's rear-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Fusion marine receiver. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the marine receiver will not display song/artist information; you'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the receiver. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
Note: This stereo is not compatible with Android devices in MTP or PTP mode.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connection: The unit's rear-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning-connector iPod/iPhone with the cable that came with your Apple device. The MS-RA70i supports audio playback, basic control (Play/Pause & Previous Next Track), song/artist information, and charging of your compatible Apple device. iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen while connected in order to access other applications; iPod/iPhone devices with earlier iOS will be locked during connection. The MS-RA70i is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of 4/25/2017):

    • If you connect an Apple device to the USB port on the marine stereo, you must either disable Bluetooth device, or unpair the Bluetooth connection from the stereo to avoid possible media-playback issues.
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

RDS AM/FM Tuner: The MS-RA70i marine stereo features a built-in AM/FM radio that offers manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store up to 15 FM station presets and 15 AM station presets. The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist & track information when listening to compatible AM/FM stations. You can also select between US and European tuning.

Aux Input: Fusion's MS-RA70i marine stereo is fitted with a rear-panel stereo RCA auxiliary input for connecting an external audio device, other than an iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone. You can adjust the gain for the connected auxiliary device to achieve a volume level similar to that of other media sources. You can adjust the gain from - 9dB to +9dB in 1dB increments.

    Audio Section

Dual Zone: The MS-RA70i marine stereo supports Dual Zone which enables two audio Zones with independent volume control from the receiver's built-in amplifier and pre-outs. Each audio Zone will play the same source, but offers independent volume control of each Zone.

25W x 4Ch Amplifier: The Fusion MS-RA70i is equipped with a 25W RMS/50W Peak x 4 channel amplifier for driving two pair of full-range marine speakers in different zone (1 pair of speakers in Zone 1 and 1 pair of speaker Zone 2) with separate volume control. The receiver's amplifier components are optimally configured for the side-fin aluminum heat sink, producing greater thermal efficiency.

Zone 1/Zone2 & Sub Pre-Outs: The MS-RA70i is also equipped with stereo RCA Zone 1 and Zone 2  pre-outs for connection of external amplifiers and speakers in two separate locations on your watercraft, plus two mono sub pre-outs for connection of an amplifier and sub, or powered sub in Zone 1 only. The Zone 1 & Zone 2 pre-outs have independent volume control. The sub pre-outs' volume level are controlled by Zone 1. You can set the sub pre-outs' low-pass filter to 55, 85, 120, or 160Hz.

Rotary Volume: The MS-RA70i features a rotary volume dial which controls the volume level for Zone 1 and Zone 2.

3-Band EQ: You can adjust the MS-RA70i's Bass, Midrange, & Treble independently from -15 to + 15 to fine tune your marine audio system.

Mute: The marine stereo's audio output can be muted with a press of a button on the front-panel.

    App Control

Fusion-Link Remote Control App: Download the Fusion-Link remote control app onto your Bluetooth-connected Apple iPod/iPhone (iOS 6.0+) or Android smartphone (OS 2.2+) and turn your mobile device into a wireless remote control from the Fusion MS-RA70i marine stereo. Once downloaded, the app will allow navigation of all music sources, independent volume zone control, and menu adjustments.

Fusion-Link Lite App: Download the free Fusion-Link Lite app from the Connect IQ Store to enable wireless control via ANT technology from a compatible Garmin watch (sold separately).

Optional ANT Wireless Technology: The Fusion ARX Remote (MS-ARX70, sold separately) is an ANT wireless stereo remote. ANT is an ultra-low-power (ULP) wireless networking protocol operating in the 2.4GHz band with a wireless range of 33'. Able to interface with the Fusion MS-RA70i stereo, the ARX Remote provides wireless localized volume level and global source control.

    Q
Can you connect a bluetooth sound bar to the Fusion MS-RA70 by bluetooth, not preouts or aux outputs?
    [ Ken  Apr 21, 2023 ]
    1 answer
    A
Thank you for your question, Ken. This radio will allow you to stream from music from your phone, however you won't be able to pair a sound bar with it since the radio doesn't act as a Bluetooth transmitter. I recommend giving one of our Advisors a call at 1.800.324.9695 or by online chat, they'll be able to help build your system.

    Q
How to put our names on the playlist so we can use our own phone music playlists at different times ?
    [ Suzanne  Oct 23, 2022 ]
    1 answer
    A
You will want to make sure that you have the Fusion-Link app downloaded on both phones if you have not already Suzanne. Once your phones are all paired (up to 8 total devices) you will have to select the one you wish to play as source. Fusion is not clear in the instruction manual on whether you can edit the playlist names, but if you can here is the procedure below: You can enter text to change some settings field values on this device. 1 In a settings field that allows you to enter text, select the "Left seek" button to erase the existing characters. 2 Use the dial to choose a letter, and press the dial to select it. 3 Add additional letters to finish entering the text. 4 Select the "play/stop" button to save the new text. I hope this was some help!

    Q
I have read that some who have this unit say that the Volume can't be controlled VIA their phone side buttons when connected via Bluetooth.. that you Must use the Fusion Link app. Is this true? Is there a work around? Changing volume/muting quickly without going into a 3rd party app is a must on a boat.. I've never seen a Bluetooth Stereo not have this option..
    [ Jeremy  Aug 14, 2022 ]
    1 answer
    A
It is the case that the app is the only means of adjusting volume. The only workaround would be to use a separate Bluetooth adapter connected to this radio's AUX input. If you need a hand selecting the right radio for your application, please give our advisors a call at 1-800-324-9695.

    Q
Is this Bluetooth 5.0? Does it support aptX and AAC?
    [ Tom  Jul 08, 2022 ]
    1 answer
    A
This MS-RA70i marine stereo features built-in Bluetooth 2.0 with support for wireless music streaming from almost any Bluetooth-enable device, Tom. The Fusion MS-RA70i supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled device, but neither aptX or AAC. We have some units like the JL Media Master 105 I've linked below that DO support aptX, with 2.1 Bluetooth codec. In the second link below is the Audiocontrol ACX-BT1 Bluetooth adapter. This is IPX5 rated so it could work behind the MS-RA70 and connect to the Aux in, boosting it's BT quality. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_13699930/JL-Audio-MediaMaster-105.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_161ACXBT1/AudioControl-ACX-BT1.html

Are settings saved if power is completely disconnected? Does it have Non-volatile memory as I don't see mention of memory wire or settings being saved?
    [ Nicholas  Jul 01, 2022 ]

It does save the settings. It has a built-in battery to keep the memory active for that purpose

    Q
I just bought this unit and see it only has 2 audio outs and sub. I have a 5 channel JL AUDIO AMP (700Watt). How do I plug the RCA cables in on amp when it has channel 1-4 and I only see the two outputs on receiver?
    [ Joebritt3210  May 08, 2022 ]
    1 answer
    A
It should have separate line outs for Zone 1 and Zone 2. Mine does. See items 3 and 4 on page 4 of the installation guide. Note the installation guide is after the owner's manual and quick start manual in the PDF on the Crutchfield website.

I am removing an old Sony head unit which was mounted in a din cage. Can i use that same Din cage to mount the Fusion MS-RA70? it would save time and cost
    [ shorty  Aug 10, 2021 ]
    1 answer
    A
That is not possible because the Fusion radio's chassis is a bit smaller and is designed to be held in with screws. Their din mount adapter is needed to install in place of another din sized radio. It can be found here: www.crutchfield.com/p_917RA70DC/item.html

The fusion radio is a little smaller than a standard cut out. My boat had an existing radio that I replaced. Between the existing parts and the parts included in the radio I was able to make it fit.
    [ Jason  Nov 02, 2020 ]
    A
It should. The face is a standard single DIN size. The back of the unit is relatively small, like most headunits that do not have a CD transport.

There should be 2 plugs included with the unit. One is the wiring harness and the second is for your RCA outputs.

The adapter is supplied with the purchase. I'm almost certain it's 6 channel preamp Outputs. Two front, two rear, and two sub outputs.

Hi Scott, thank you for your question. The Fusion MS-RA70 radio does not have HD radio support, marine receivers very rarely have HD radio support, unfortunately. If you would like to look into some other options, feel free to chat with our Advisor team online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We will be happy to help you out!

    Q
If my buddies and I each have one of these in our boats can they be connected wirelessly to each other so they all play the same music out all the boats from one phone source?

i do not believe that is an option here. I've toyed around with mine a lot and never came across a setting that would allow that, BUT there may be something I am over looking. Your absolute best bet is to head to crutchfield site and live chat with a CSR, my guy helped me with everything down to footage of wire needed for my boat. NOt sure if this helps. BUT i love this unit! Very powerful and very user friendly. And the size allowed me to put in a specific spot on my boat.

I'm not sure about that but it's an awesome head unit that won't disappoint you and BT connectivity is flawless and crystal clear. Sorry I can't help you with more information. You will love this head unit.

About a 99% chance it does. I've never see a USB on a head unit not have power to it's power pins.

I'm not sure I don't use it. I can say it's the best Marine head unit I've purchased the BT connectivity is awesome and crystal clear. My suggestion is to pair it with an amp.

how well does radio pick up stations with out a external antenna?

Not very well at all (no different than any other stereo though). If you do not have an antenna, you'll definitely want to add one: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_424850/Marine-Antennas.html?tp=65600

Does it work through fusion link so you can operate it via fish finders that have fusion link?

This receiver is not compatible with Fusion-Link (it can work with Fusion-Link Remote Control App and Fusion-Link Lite App) which means it cannot work with those fish finders. We do have Fusion radios that can work with those fish finders. Feel free to call an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation on a Fusion radio My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

I'm not sure the team @ Crutchfield could possibly help with your question. I will say it is a excellent unit and would not hesitate to buy other Fusion products.

    Q
Is there a backstop mount for the MS RA70? I plan to mount this on my motorcycle and concerned about supporting the rear of the stereo unit. The current stereo in my motorcycle is a Sony Marine and has a backstrap

The head unit is so light weight, that the front mounts hold it secured in place in my bouncing off-road jeep. Great blue tooth. You will not be disappointed.

Not to my knowledge, make sure you have enough depth too.

I don't believe it's bridgeable. Not even mentioned in the operations/installation manual.

Does this have four channel plus sub preamps? It says so several times on this site but the manual only shows 2 channel preamp plus sub.

It has zone 1, zone 2 and a sub output.

It's 2 zones but 4 channels total. (2 speakers per zone) plus the sub pre outs
