McIntosh MAC7200

Optimum sound quality. I don't know what else to say, other than I'm stoked to have it and it made my day when it was delivered. Lots to learn about it still, I've been reading the manual over and over. Quite a purchase, would recommend to everyone.

Crutchfield and McIntosh Service leave a lot to be desired.
Eric from Largo, Florida on 6/29/2024
Let me say first the sound quality is EXCELLENT. I purchased this receiver June 4th 2022. Shortly after maybe 3-months. The left meter starts having issues. It would get stuck or not work. It progressively got worse. I finally got to point I had break down and have it looked at. I pulled up Mcintosh's website and found a local service center. Nearest is about 1hr way. 2 hour round trip. Service has it for about a month waiting on a new Meter from Mcintosh. Service center has it ready in a day after the meter arrives. Bring it back home, get it hooked up.. New meter appears fine. About a week later the new meter starts active up. Its dead but after short "warm up" time with volume greater than 30% it comes back to life... At this point I'm like What the heck! It's starting to becoming madding. I take it back to service. They have it for about a week and finally call me to say- "sorry we can't replicate the issue". I drive back pick it up...I have it for about a week and the left meter starts acting up again. I email McIntosh explaining the issue. The "gate keeper" that handles service with Mcintosh says.. sorry I don't show you registered the warranty. Can you provided us with a copy of the receipt. I email them a copy of my Crutchfield receipt. She said she forwarded it to her manager.. It's been Crickets ever since. No response from McIntosh- None. I called Crutchfield. Customer service said.. Oh sorry -you need to deal with McIntosh. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed.
Pros: Sound quality , Connections, Tuner is amazing.
Cons: Sketchy quality, McIntosh Customer Service or lack of. Service

I can't completely tell yet as I only had it 2 days, when the center information light quit working. It sounded good, but I haven't yet trimmed and toned it out completely. I sent it back for a replacement unit which is coming today. I'll submit an updated review later.
Pros: Looked and sounds good so far.
Cons: Expensive!! Also they send you a nice AM antenna with a 20 foot chord, but no AM antenna.

A family heirloom.
W-TM from Rolla, ND on 2/11/2024
MAC7200 is the second McIntosh I have acquired. Since the 70's I always liked their 2-Channel products and freely admit to being a fanboy. Since I wanted the DAC2 upgrade, this product was not purchased from Crutchfield but from a dealer that is a 12-hour drive to get to. I do wish I could have had Crutchfield send me one, to avoid the hassle. If you are considering the 7200. I would highly recommend listening to something from Yamaha, Marantz, Cambridge or the like, first. If you cannot hear much of a difference between the two, I would advise not to waist $8k plus on this product. I suspect this product is geared for the person that wishes to relive the glory days of those super receivers of the late 70's and 80's. With some added tech to handle today's media and listening habits. If you don't listen to AM-FM, I would spend the 9K$ on the 8950 which is the same thing but has a 5 band EQ and DAC2 module. I bought this for its sound plus user experience. The Anthem STR it replaced was a great piece, but I was not its primary user. I would often find my bride frustrated trying to figure out Anthem's source selection and getting it to play the radio. The separate Magnum Dynalab tuner was just too many devices - too many buttons. Now the Anthem and Magnum product was great stuff, so I did not want to go backwards on sound. I did lose some bass snap going to the Mac, but what I gained in realism on vocals more than made up for it. Warm and rich so much fun to listen to.
Pros: Well thought out interface, that is easy to figure out and use. Full rich sound that is easy to listen to for hours on end. Forgiving on harsh and poor recordings. Built to last. Support from McIntosh is legendary, it is not unheard of for them to be willing to repair products from 40 or 50 years ago.
Cons: No DAC2 module included. So, no HDMI ARC input. For a component priced at $8K it should be. I wish the price point could be more accessible. You do pay a premium for McIntosh name and to store replacement parts for all their products long-term. No built-in streaming capabilities. Too much fun to listen to. Lack of sleep is a common occurrence. Now days there are too many late-night listening sessions until 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. When I should be getting to bed.

A Tale of Two Amps
Sean from Hermitage, TN on 1/21/2023
I had purchased the MA5300 and thought it sounded fantastic. One day later the left meter stopped working, so I brought it took it back to get another one. While I was looking around i saw that the MAC for only 2k more gives you an am/fm receiver, both moving coil and moving magnet phono inputs, and 200 watts per channel along with the autoformer technology. Plus, you get an additional pre-amp out to run to a subwoofer or another power amp. It was a no brainer. I told them to keep the MA5300 and went home with the MAC7200. It sounds even better and it has so much more going for it. My advice to anyone comparing the two: spend the extra 2k and get the MAC7200. To me, its the best deal in the McIntosh lineup.
Pros: 200 watts, am/fm, MC & MM phono, two outputs.
Cons: Expensive! Comes with an AM antenna, but not an FM antenna. What??

Great AMP, recommend with slight reservation regarding streaming
Kevin from Charleston, SC on 3/11/2022
This Integrated Receiver sounds very clean, crisp, with plenty of power to spare to drive my two McIntosh XR50 speakers. To process a wired lossless audio service you need another device. Maybe if WW3 catches on I will use the AM/FM function but you still need to purchase the FM antenna to make the radio function work. This is a serious piece of equipment, heavy, well made, with very good fit and finish. I highly recommend but at the price point it should be able to process modern digital inputs for streaming.
Pros: Absolutely accurate sound, incredibly powerful, well built, American made
Cons: Will not stream audio files without another device.

A cut way above the rest...
Paul from Brownfield, TX on 11/2/2021
Few years back I left a glowing review on Crutchfield for the Mac MA-5300. I enjoyed every bit of it, then I got bit by a nasty bug of " upgraditis". I waited patiently until Crutchfield had it stock, and I placed my order. Delivery was prompt, courteous and on time. The amplifier arrived in excellent condition. Crutchfield service is world class. Unboxing it was another amazing experience, noticing all the details McIntosh has paid attention to and care with which it was packaged and shipped, after all it's price does bite deep into your pocket. But it wasn't until I connected this baby to my Klipsch La Scala' II's, 70th anniversary, and started to enjoy the sound, that it hit me. WOW, I was left speechless , as the sound floated in a three dimensional way, presenting every detail of the music, regardless of genres that I played, without any hint of harshness or muddiness, or degradation at any volume level. I truly believe this amp will outlast me, seeing the solid, yet refined construction, with attention to the smallest details, the ability to upgrade the DAC, and the plethora of inputs and outputs it offers. I will be adding few components to my system down the road using the MAC7200 as the center piece. It has replaced a Cary Audio SLI- 80 HS, (amazing piece too) and it does beat the tubes sound in my setups. Seriously, I believe it was money well spent, no regrets at all. TY Crutchfield for the exce
Pros: Sound, ease of use, attention to details, looks, Reputation, DAC

Too Much Trouble
Dana from Morristown, NJ on 4/16/2021
It has been a dream of mine to own a piece of McIntosh audio. Going to share some candid thoughts allot of people who know more about audio than me will probably shell. First of all, I never dreamed that the package was 95 lbs. with a receiver weight of 75 lbs. I could not bring it in the house because of the size of the box and the weight (and I can bench 235 lbs.) My wife finally helped me get it out of the box, and I was able to carry it upstairs to the space I wanted it in. It was then screwed into a wood baseboard with several layers of cardboard in between. The one screw came out with a minimal fight, but the other got so tight/ twisted, it wouldn't budge to the point I ended up stripping the screw (and I work on vintage Porsche's lest you assume I'm some kind of buffoon with a wrench). I think I am going to need to take it to a machine shop to get it out. In summary, if you go down this route, buy it from someone who can deliver it, unpack it, and set it up. This is completely insane.... UPDATED 5/2/21: I thought I could get over my issues with a stripped screw unboxing the unit, and was even thinking if everything went well, I would delete my critical post. Unfortunately, things got worse. The unit will only play through one speaker. After being on the phone with a tech (who was very good) last Friday, the left speaker played, then after I hung up, I went to move the unit towards the wall and it cut out for good. Beyond frustrating, to spend almost $8k and have it play out of one speaker. Before anyone thinks operator error, when I switched the cables, the speaker plays fine. I switched the RCAs etc. I will call tech support one more time tomorrow, but it is clearly a defective unit. Being a car guy, I always wondered...is this a Porsche or a Ferrari. A Ferrari looks and sounds great, until it leaves you by the side of the road, now I know.
Pros: Supposed to be good. UPDATED 5/2/21: Looks cool/ audiophile friends will applaud you, expect for those who think you paid too much for too little.
Cons: Shouldn't need a machine shop to unpack a piece of audio equipment. UPDATED 5/2/21: Price and one speaker playback.

Life Goals - Own a McIntosh
Guest from Texas on 7/4/2020
Sound quality and specs are exceptional! The treble and bass adjustment is a very good feature because it does make a difference in balancing the end sound. Mine is powering 2 Bowers & Wilkins CM5s2 speakers matched with a Rel S3. I'm typically only pushing 20 watts max which outputs plenty volume. The ability to swap out the DAC is huge for future upgrades.

Your only regret would be if you didn't buy it
Rich from Midlothian, VA on 1/4/2019
One of the more seductive offerings on the market. McIntosh polarizes people just a bit, but only because of their high prices. Obviously the law of diminishing returns sets in (well) below this price point. On the other hand, what other manufacturer can claim the kind of longevity Mac can? Most of their pieces from decades gone by are still in use, still delivering top-quality sound, and are still in demand. They're not cheap, but they're also impossible to regret buying. I've nearly ten McIntosh pieces now and I treasure every one.
Pros: Rock-solid, made-in-USA quality; seductive sound and appearance
Cons: Lofty price point

Incredibly overpriced equipment for the sound you are getting - dry, boring & analytical... you could get a decent tube preamp and modest SS amp for less than half what this thing cost and the sound would 100% DESTROY this McIntosh gear. I have heard WAY too much gear over the last 20 years in this hobby to not realize what kind of overpriced hype this is.

McIntosh MAC 7200 review
Scott from Sugarland, TX 77478 on 3/26/2018
McIntosh 7200 review The music is delivered smoothly and effortlessly through this massive and very serious piece of audio equipment. It is truly the Rolls-Royce of receivers. It just makes me feel good when I walk past it . I have been listening to it for 2 months now and it just seems to get better. It has more power than you will ever need and it is just simply almost a work of art. It has everything that a vinyl old-timer like me would want on a receiver. I looked at the Yamahas and none had the preamp out to amp in RCA plugs on the back nor did they have the 200 Watts that I thought that I wanted. Not all recordings are equal but when you get a hold of a good one it's simply sounds astonishing when put through this equipment.
Pros: Mac 7200
