Product Research

Features

Overview: The DJI RS4 is a professional 3-axis gimbal that is specifically designed for mirrorless cameras with a standard zoom lens. It gives independent filmmakers and solo content-creators the power to capture action movements with clarity and smoothness. In addition to the gimbal, the RS4 comes with a hand grip with a built-in rechargeable battery, a grip extension/tripod, and top and bottom quick-release plates. Its 1.8" OLED touchscreen can help you calibrate the gimbal and set parameters. The DJI RS4 requires a connection to a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone running the DJI Ronin app for activation and operation.

Camera Compatibility: The DJI RS4 weighs 3 pounds, and has a load capacity of 6.6 pounds (3 kg), allowing it to support most mainstream cameras. Click here for an up-to-date list of compatible cameras. For best results, the gimbal has been tested and is recommended for use with the following mirrorless camera and lens combinations:

Brand Camera Body Suggested Lens
Sony A7S3, A7M4, A7C, A1 FE 24-70mm F2.8
Canon R6, R6 RF 24-70mm F2.8
Nikon Z6 II, Z7 II Z 24-70mm F2.8
Panasonic GH6 M4/3 12-60mm F2.8-4.0
Fujifilm X-T4 X 16-55mm F2.8

Bluetooth 5.1: The DJI RS4 supports a Bluetooth 5.1 wireless camera connection, letting you control your compatible camera without the need for a connection cable. You can remotely control camera shutter and lens zoom on compatible cameras. An RSS camera control port (USB-C) on the gimbal lets you connect a control cable when using a camera that doesn't support wireless control.

Operation Modes: The camera stabilizer offers four operating modes:

  • Upright: The most common operating mode, the grip is held upright for walking and running shots.
  • Underslung: The gimbal is flipped and the camera is held in a lower position for taking low-angle shots, and for tracking objects on the ground.
  • Flashlight: The gimbal is held horizontally like a flashlight for shooting in confined spaces.
  • Briefcase: An optional briefcase handle is required to operate the gimbal in this mode. The handle makes low-angle shooting more intuitive.

4th-Gen RS Stabilization: The RS4 utilizes DJI's next-generation RS stabilization algorithm for use in multiple scenarios. It shows significantly better stability over the previous series when vertical shooting, and when shooting while running. The RS4 features aluminum alloy axis arms and a Teflon™ coating on all three axes for reduced friction and smoother balancing. The stabilizer offers the following mechanical ranges of motion:

  • Pan Axis: 360° continuous rotation
  • Roll Axis: -95° to +240°
  • Tilt Axis: -112° to +214°

Quick-Release Plates: The DJI camera stabilizer features top and bottom quick-release plates that make mounting your camera quick and easy. The fine-tuning knob on the tilt axis allows you to slide the camera forward or backward in millimeter-level increments for accurate balancing.

Automated Axis Locks: The DJI RS4 provides easy setup and breakdown; when the gimbal is powered On, the 3 axes unlock and expand automatically, allowing you to start working within seconds. Pressing the Power button once automatically locks the gimbal and puts it into a sleep mode. When powered off, the gimbal will automatically fold and lock.

Onboard Controls: In addition to the gimbal power button, the RS4 offers the following onboard controls:

  • Gimbal Mode Switch: This 3-way slide switch lets you switch from the following operating modes:
    • Pan Follow (PF): This mode only allows the pan axis to follow the movement of the grip and is ideal for shooting emerging walk-through and arc shots or moving from left to right.
    • Pan and Tilt Follow (PTF): Allows both the pan and tilt axes to follow the movement of the grip and is ideal for scenarios when moving up/down or on a slant.
    • Pan, Tilt, and Roll Follow (FPV): All three axes follow the movement of the grip. This mode is ideal for scenarios where the camera will be rotated or when shooting from a low angle. FPV mode provides two sub-settings:
      • 3D Roll 360: Enables footage to be shot while rotating the camera 360°.
      • Custom: Enables or disables any axis to follow the hand grip as required.
  • Camera Control Button: After connecting the camera, press halfway for autofocus. Press once to start or stop recording. Press and hold to take a photo.
  • M Button: Press once to take photos, by default. On the touchscreen, you can set the button function to C1/Fn1 on compatible cameras. Pressing and holding the M button will put the gimbal into Sport mode; this lets the follow speed of the gimbal increase greatly and is ideal for scenarios where a subject moves suddenly and at fast speeds.
  • Joystick: The joystick can control the movements of the gimbal. Move up and down to control the tilt of the gimbal, and left and right to control the pan of the gimbal. On compatible cameras, you can also control the lens zoom using the joystick. A joystick mode switch lets you choose between gimbal control and zoom control.
  • Trigger: The Trigger push-button on the front of the gimbal handle serves multiple purposes depending on the number of presses. It can be used to Lock the gimbal, re-center it, and rotate the gimbal 180° for selfie mode.

Wireless Shutter Control: The RS4 supports wireless shutter control with compatible cameras, including some Canon and Sony cameras, letting you control video and photo shooting wirelessly using the Shoot/Record button on the stabilizer. This eliminates the need for bulky cable-connections from the gimbal to the camera. After their initial pairing, cameras can automatically reconnect when in range.

Auto Tune: The Auto Tune feature can automatically calibrate motor stiffness based on mounted payload and tuning aggressiveness. Simply pressing the power button for two seconds, then pressing the M button starts the automatic calibration process. Auto Tune takes approximately 15 to 30 seconds.

1.8" OLED Touchscreen: The DJI RS4 has a 1.8" full-color touchscreen built right into the handle, letting you access gimbal and camera parameters. The on-screen status bar lets you check the balance of the gimbal at a glance. When the bar is green or gray, the gimbal is balanced. If it's yellow, it's slightly unbalanced. The status bar is shown in red with the gimbal is critically unbalanced. Sliding your finger up or down opens the Gimbal Settings screen or the Control Center screen. The Create screen can be opened by sliding your finger to the left.

Battery Grip/Extension and Tripod: The RS4 features a removable hand grip that houses the BG21 rechargeable Lithium-ion battery (7.2V, 3000mAh, 21.6Wh). Also included is an extended grip/tripod that connects to the battery/grip so the gimbal can be held with both hands. The tripod legs can be unfolded to stand the camera stabilizer gimbal upright on a flat surface.

Rechargeable Battery: The DJI RS4's advanced, built-in BG21 rechargeable battery charges in approximately 2.5 hours, using an 18-watt USB charging adapter (not included). The battery is compatible with PD (Power Delivery) protocol. With a fully-charged battery, the RS4 gives you up to 12 hours of runtime. The RS4 is compatible with the optional BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip (sold separately), which extends the runtime to 29.5 hours.

DJI Ronin App: The DJI Ronin app (Apple iOS 11.0+, Android OS 8.0+) allows you to use your compatible mobile device to set up and fine-tune gimbal performance with settings for features like SmoothTrack, motor parameters, and various intelligent functions. The RS4 wirelessly communicates with your Apple iOS or Android device over Bluetooth 5.1. The Ronin mobile app lets you control the RS4 stabilizer within a range of approximately 33 feet (10 meters). In addition to setting the gimbal parameters, the DJI Ronin app also lets you control the gimbal using a virtual joystick along with on-screen controls for Pan, Tilt, Roll, Speed, and Smoothness adjustments.
