Unbalanced

The cables are fine for the price. I tried connecting the preout RCA terminals of my new Marantz SR5013 to the XLR socket on my new Marantz MM7055 ampli and zero sound from ant speaker. The XLR switches were all set to unbalanced bc this is an unbalanced connection. When I connected the RCA from the AVR to the RCA of the amp everything worked, except that I'm the proud owner of 5 unbalanced XLR cables.

Pros:

Cons: They should have made it a 6 foot cable rather than 5'.

Beware mixing balanced and unbalanced signals

Daniel from Ellicott City, MD on 7/12/2016

I can't fault the cable per say, but in many cases a passive cable is not sufficient for taking an unbalanced signal and inputting it into a target that only accepts balanced inputs. Balanced inputs expect higher voltage levels than what unbalanced signals typically output. These cables do nothing to address that issue. I came to learn this the hard way. I bought these cables to take my output signal from my Yamaha RX-A2050 (unbalanced RCA) and amplify it through a Yamaha S7000 (takes balanced inputs) to run to subs. In short, it didn't work, the output signal from the S7000 was way below what it should be due to the fact that my source (unbalanced signal) was too low in gain. I ended up buying an active unbalanced-to-balanced converter to solve the problem. The cables for my problem.were worthless. Just keep in mind that they aren't necessarily a cheap fix for moving unbalanced signals to balanced. At least not for my case.

Pros: Cheap possible solution for moving unbalanced output signals to balanced inputs

Cons: Make sure a passive cable will actually work in your case. If you find your output levels are weak, your problem may lie in the fact that your input signal is too low and you need to think about investing in an active solution that can provide gain.
