About the Brandmotion 9002-8817

Alexander H.

Add a backup cam to your Wrangler radio

Adding a backup cam to a Wrangler makes total sense, but you didn't have a ton of options if you wanted to keep your factory touchscreen radio... until now. Brandmotion's 9002-8817 rear-view camera package integrates nicely into the rugged design of your Jeep Wrangler and displays everything it sees on your factory touchscreen. The included CMOS camera offers a wide view and excellent visibility for night driving, making it a must-have for the hard-drivin' Wrangler owner. Use it for off-road reversing when you need to watch out for trenches and boulders, or install this cam with the optional parking lines activated if you're a town & country driver.

A fit for your spare

Brandmotion includes a bracket and camera head extension piece so you can mount the camera between your rear-mounted factory spare tire. You'll also find the wiring harness needed for factory integration, as well as a handy module that plugs into your Jeep's OBDII port and reprograms the factory radio to be compatible with the camera.

Installation Note: Some wire-splicing may be required, so you may want to consider a professional installation if this is your first install of this kind. The OBDII flash module can only be used on one vehicle.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Product Research

Features

Overview: Brandmotion's 9002-8817 kit lets you add rear-view functionality to your 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK (including Unlimited version) equipped with a factory video screen and factory spare tire. It includes a high-quality CMOS camera mounted on an innovative spare tire hub mounting bracket.

Spare Tire Mount: The included camera bracket is specifically designed to mount behind the factory spare tire with the camera partially concealed between two of the upper wheel spokes. This allows the camera to be centered on the rear of the vehicle looking down, offering a wide 170˚ view.

Note: The 9002-8817 is not compatible with aftermarket spare tire wheels. If you have an aftermarket spare tire wheel, use the 9002-8847 instead.

Parking Guidelines: The 9002-8817 rear-camera will display Parking Assist lines. A small green wire, when cut, will display Parking Assist lines on the rear image.

Wiring: All wiring for the add-on rear-view camera is included. The 29' video cable terminates at the radio location and features a composite video plug that can be attached to the included factory radio camera-input adapter, allowing it to be fed into the factory radio. If an aftermarket radio is used, this composite video end can be plugged directly into the rear-camera input. Bare ended power and ground wires for the camera will need to be tied into the factory wiring at the dash location.

Note: Care must be taken to not run the camera cable through the center of the camera bracket, as this will cut the cable and void the warranty.

Flashing Module: Included with the rear-view camera kit is an OBDII flash module. This is used to "activate" the rear-view feature of the factory radio, avoiding a trip to the dealership to have the vehicle flashed. After the installation is complete, the vehicle is run for approximately 20-30 seconds, then the flashing module is temporarily plugged into the OBDII port. When the green light on the flashing module lights, programming is complete and the module is removed.

Note: The flashing module is VIN locked for single vehicle use only.

The manual says they are made for one time use. I hope that helps.

Can the down angle be adjusted to "see" a hitch ball?

A
It actually depends on if you have the spare tire mounted on or not. If tire is mounted in rear....it will not directly see the ball.

Q
What is the difference between the Brandmotion 9002-8817 and the Brandmotion 9002-8847? (For a 2015 Wrangler JKU).

A
If I recall correctly, one is made to add to an aftermarket unit and the other is made to hook up to a factory head unit that is capable of having a camera hooked up to it but didn't have it from the factory. That model includes a module you plug into the OBD2 port to "flash" the system and "enable" the camera function on the factory head unit. I've use both units on mine and my wife's Jeep and they've both worked well.

8817 has a fixed mount for the camera and works well with factory wheels. The 8847 can be adjusted in 2 directions to accommodate all wheels.
scott  Jan 05, 2020

The 8847 includes a long extension bracket that can be used for oversize tires
richard  Dec 30, 2019
A
8817 is for factory tire and 8847 for oversized tires
benedicto  Dec 30, 2019
A
I'm not certain of that model but we installed our Brandmotion on our 2009 Mazda. The on-screen menu system, guidelines etc are very easy to use, and the LED light illumination really creates a bright image, even at night (if the 8847 has the same feature) You may also call Brandmotion directly as I did on the real specifics..
