Good Receiver but a Tad Flawed
Jeffrey from Golden, CO on 6/10/2025
After having lived with this receiver for a little over two months, I can say the performance is generally good. The sound and video quality are great, with the former being particularly impressive with Dolby ATMOS sources. The one negative feature I've found is the streaming function. I stream a lot of Sirius-XM music, and during this the receiver will randomly shut itself off. The same thing happened with an AVR-X3800H I purchased and returned because of this. However, it was more frequent and worse with the X3800H. I was hoping to avoid this issue with the X4800H. I don't know whether this is a HEOS issue or a receiver design issue. I've decided to keep this receiver since while the shutoff is annoying, it isn't a show stopper.
Pros: Great Dolby ATMOS sound Great 4K video with Dolby Vision Great surround sound
Cons: Flawed streaming with HEOS

Denon AVR-X4800H
Raymond from Canton, GA on 5/21/2025
I had to replace my 12 year old Onkyo TX-NR1010. I have a 7.1 Klipsch speaker layout. There is a night and day difference between the two. The Denon provides true 7.1 output! I am able to more clearly hear all of my speakers when playing music and movies, and get the true 7.1 surround sound. I love it! Dialogue is so much clearer when watching movies as well! We no longer need ti turn on captions! I'm probably going to add 2 more Klipsch speakers, mounted in my ceiling to get front height capability and configure it for 9.1, which you can also do with this Denon amp.

Denon AVR-X4800H
Wali from New Jersey on 4/28/2025
The receiver has excellent sound quality and a wide range of features. I've always been a fan of Denon products. However, my customer service experience has been very disappointing. The issue has now dragged on for six weeks without resolution. I've been misled multiple times and promised return calls that didn't happened. At one point, a representative even addressed me as Bro, which was very unprofessional. It's clear that the quality of support has significantly declined. Hopefully, your product will work without any issues - good luck.
Pros: Excellent features
Cons: Poor customer service

Great receiver. I highly recommend getting a calibration disk ON TOP of using Auddissey or Direc . I used the Spatial Audio calibration kit blu ray disk and it improved the sound ten fold.
Pros: Made in Japan = Better parts Front display has a second line over the x2800 and x3800 Legacy input for old game systems
Cons: FM radio tuner is garbage , but hey.

Excellent Home Theater Addition
Ryan from ALPENA, MI on 1/29/2025
I have personally used one of these receivers for a few years and also have installed a few of them into customers home theaters when it called for it. The Denon UI in the receiver settings is excellent and gives you tons of customization to really dial in your home theater setup. I love that the controls are hidden by the front panel that drops down creating a simple sleek design on the front of the receiver.
Pros: - Easy To Setup - Versatility for playback options - Clean Design - Great Power Output
Cons: - Pricy

Kevin from Federal Way, WA on 12/24/2024
Better than the unit it replaced is some way. Not as good in others. After set up as a pre/pro dialog is more centered than the Marantz it replaced. Adjustability of the individual inputs in the app more friendly but not as many option. Cannot find individual audio levels for each channel to balance them. I will continue to look. Needed a pre/pro to pass 4K. Marantz pre/pro that was the re placement for the one I have was much more expensive and I did not need all those channels. Price/performance is good. No real buyers remorse. Setup for my use was not straight forward but have years of experience, I was able to get it done with only minimal duplication of effort.

The AVR is an excellent choice as a centerpiece for a Dolby atmos setup. I'm using this in a room configured for 5.4.1, and having integrated amps for every channel (minus the subwoofer) made this a very easy, self contained option.

Excellent product and excellent service from Crutchfield!
Worley from Round Rock, TX on 6/27/2024
This was my first AVR upgrade in many years and the Denon AVR-X4800H Receiver really delivers superior sound quality even when paired with a set of older Klipsch speakers that range between 15 and 20+ years old. I can hear things that I never noticed before when streaming shows on the TV or enjoying the surround sound from my favorite DVD/Blu-Ray movies. I will be upgrading my speakers next to see how far I can take the sound quality. Excellent product and excellent service from Crutchfield!

Pleasantly surprised
Randy from Buford, GA on 4/9/2024
I'm coming to the x4800h from a pioneer lx505. The first thing I noticed after I got things dialed in and calibrated and using only the multi eq32 was strong clean sound. Everything, the devices connected , the calibration, the sound came together perfectly. I've heard people use the term dynamic when talking about the denon 4800 and comparing it to other brands but now I know what that is.This was the sound! I was truly amazed and that doesn't happen often. It along with the excellent bass of the 4800 makes a blockbuster movie come to life. Set -up was a little frustrating but that's to be expected with any receiver. Four individual bass ports is also nice. It's got power to spare when needed. I have a 22x18 foot den and it fills the space.

Denon's X4800H Performs Well in a 5.1 System
Daniel from Katy, TX on 12/6/2023
I have a 5.1 system using 2 each 8-inch VRi580 (front) and 2 each 6.5-inch VRi560 (back) in-ceiling Boston speakers, center VR-MC Boston speaker, and a 12-inch DLS-4000 Velodyne subwoofer. They were professionally purchased and installed along with a Denon AVR-3805 by Tweeter Home Entertainment Group in 2004. The system was running fine, but I wanted to replace my AVR with new technology. After installing the new AVR, adjusting settings, and testing all features, I find the sound quality for my room and speaker setup is an improvement over my old AVR. I don't plan to add speakers due to my existing room layout. The marginal gain in sound quality won't be worth the trouble and expense. The physical installation of the AVR was easy enough for me, but I watched many YouTube videos and read tips, etc. So, I spent more time on prep than on installation and setup. Neither the Denon Quick setup guide nor its full (electronic only) manual provides a step-by-step satisfactory guide for initial installation. I had to write my own procedure using tips from YT and Crutchfield. This included unplugging and replugging TV and AVR power cords to sync the units so that the on-screen Denon setup menu would display properly on the TV. Ater installation, I also had to refer to the full manual several times to understand all the nuances of selecting features. There is a lot to learn. But the AVR works just as it's supposed to and sounds great.
Pros: All tech features work as stated by Denon. Lots of power.
Cons: Quick-start and full manuals not the best.

Not the best customer service
Darryl from Hubbard, OR on 10/24/2023
A few months after using the system the sub-woofer channel stopped sending a signal to the sub-woofer. We did troubleshooting to ensure it wasn't the speaker or the wireless sending unit and ended up isolating it to the receiver's output channel. Spent quite a bit of time on the phone with Denon trying to diagnose the issue before they agreed it was the receiver. The customer support after that point was very frustrating. Denon just sent a PDF file listing the locations that support their product and left the interaction with the repair facility up to me. Denon promised to send a shipping label and box which took 3 calls to them to get set up and actually out to me. They created a different reference number during each call so it was difficult to track my case with them. For a nice, clean, technically advanced receiver their attention to quality and their ability to take care of their customers is noticeably lacking.
Pros: Easy set up. Can stream any source to any zone. Nice smart phone app integration.
Cons: Gets confused about what source is feeding the receiver, particularly devices like Apple TV. Sub-woofer stopped working.

Great as a receiver or a pre/pro
Mark from GRANITE FALLS, WA on 6/4/2023
Sounds great! Plenty of features. You can really improve your system by putting it in full preamp mode and using it as a pre/pro for your power amp at a lower cost than most out-of-the-box pre/pros. Okay, no XLRs but with 2 foot RCA cables to my amp, I'm not hearing any noise. Everybody should be aware that the March 2023 firmware update for this and other Denons finally got rid of the goofy industry-wide small/large speaker config nomenclature that throws so many beginners off. Now during setup you get to a screen where you can set individual crossovers, the lowest of which is shown as "full range." That makes perfect sense because the setting shows how much of the low freq (other than discrete LFE channel) stays with the speaker vs the subwoofer. No more beginners asking things like "Large? Larger than what? Huh? Small?" Once someone knows how crossovers work, the new screens are great. There's even a diagram that pops up showing which sound goes where. Great job Denon!

Outstanding unit
Joe from Houston on 4/23/2023
After a very negative attempt at a current Anthem this receiver is a welcome relief. I'm replacing an older Denon 3500H and this unit betters it in every way. Clear, clean, lucid, lively and dynamic with a surround sound field that makes my old Denon sound broken. This with Audyssey and their iPad app. I've also bought Dirac live but haven't set it up yet. That I can have a fully tweaked Aussey MultiEQ preset and a separate one for Dirac Live I can choose between is just icing on the cake. The only oddity in set up was that the preconfigured CEC set-up did not switch off the receiver with my Apple TV 4K remote, but a scroll through the 4700's on screen menu revealed the needed setting and that was quickly rectified. Its sonics smoke the Anthem 740 8K I tried before this, which sounded dull, flat and lifeless in comparison. This Denon is a winner.
Pros: Massive flexibility, great sound, solid build, bug free operation. Simple set up where everything just pretty much works straight out of the box with great documentation. And the surround sound kills what was available 4 or 5 years ago.
Cons: A little pricey for a disposable product that will be obsoleted by the next generation of hdmi or surround formats, but that pretty much comes with the territory with almost all of these HT receivers. But I think the trouble free set up and great sonics are more than worth the price.

Denon X4800H
Christopher from WILLIAMSPORT, IN on 3/26/2023
Been really impressed with this AVR as I have owned a few Denon's over the years and this has to be the best so far. I choose the 4800 over the 3800 as it's made in Japan and hopefully, it will last longer with the better build quality.
Pros: X4800H VS X3800H Made in Japan vs Vietnam 7 HDMI inputs as opposed to 6 metal front panel vs plastic panel 125W @ 8ohms 2 channels driven vs 105W 2-line FLD front display vs 1 line 32 bit D.D.S.C. Digital, Clock Jitter Reducer, and AL32 multichannel processing on the X4800H 3 12v DC trigger outputs vs 1 monolithic amp design on X4800H

Constantly stop working then continue working!!!
Hoa from Tucson, AZ on 2/8/2023
Loses sound when playing a CD for 3 to 5 seconds then works again. I tried disconnecting the power and restarting, but still lost sound for audio or video input sources. I replaced the optical cable, changed the connection to RCA, and reset it to the factory setting, and it still didn't fix the problem. It happened every 15 mins, then every 5 minutes, and now every 2 minutes. I hoped it would go away but this unit still has this problem after 2 weeks. Not acceptable with a high-cost unit.
Pros: The sound is good when it's working
Cons: The sound and video signal kept disconnecting

Defective Unit
George from Lexington, VA on 2/3/2023
I received a new AVR-X4800H to replace my AVR-X4300H that was partially damaged by a lightening strike near our home and finally died last week. I had delayed replacing it until the new AVR-X4800H became available. Unfortunately, the unit I received had a couple of glitches. One was related to problems connecting it to the internet that I resolved by restarting the AVR. The second glitch had to do with the Audessey setup of my subwoofers, specifically the decibel indicator needed to adjust the subwoofers volume to 75 dB which was not responsive to manual changes in subwoofer volume. I telephoned Crutchfield technical support and spoke with a technical advisor named Ben. As I have come to expect from Crutchfield over the years since I purchased my car speakers in 1978, he was friendly, patient, empathetic and helpful. I had already tried the same model Audessey microphone that came with my older AVR-X4300H, so we tried both a restart and then a full reset to factory default settings. Neither fixed the problem with the unresponsive Audessey dB indicator, so Ben concluded that it must be a problem with the AVR-X4800H itself and arranged for an overnight shipment of a replacement unit. Let's hope the replacement is free of defects. If not, I'll probably have to go with a AVR-X4700H or AVR-X6700H since I need a replacement AVR now. A Marantz Cinema 50 would be another possibility, but I need the greater connectivity options of the Denon modes for my home theater.

video/sound dropout problem
Ben R. from Rio Rancho, NM on 1/29/2023
When it works it sounds good. However, the random sound and video dropouts are infuriating. It doesn't matter what I am watching whether it be just youtube content, a UHDblu-ray disk, the random simultaneous sound, and video dropouts make me want to send this thing back. What I mean by dropouts is that both sound and video cease at the same time while watching content, then come back on after about 3 to 8 seconds. All up to date with the firmware, and even got new HDMI cables. Still drops sound and video randomly. The unit itself isn't even that hot and not enclosed in a cabinet. I am going to try an AC Infinity AIRCOM T8 Fan on the top and see if that stops the video/sound dropout nonsense. UPDATED 3/23/23: I initially posted a review of the Denon x4800h about a week after I received it. During use, it was dropping sound and picture randomly no matter what I was watching, which was INFURIATING. This is the UPDATED review. It turns out most of the problems I was having were because of my ignorance and using a 25ft fiber optic HDMI cable to the TV about 25ft away using eARC ports on the receiver and TV. The cable worked fine with my projector. What I didn't know was the fiber optic cable is NOT BI-DIRECTIONAL. It won't work properly using eARC. The Cable has a SOURCE side and a DESTINATION side. Once I replaced the cable with a 25ft regular high-speed HDMI cable all of the video and audio dropouts went away. I have had NO PROBLEMS since. The DENON X4800H works as it should in an 11-channel setup. I use an external amp driven by the LEFT and RIGHT pre-outs on the back of the Denon x4800h in a 7.3.4 setup. I give it four stars simply because I do not understand why the receiver's test tone pink noise has such a low volume, on my unit anyway. The only way to make it work is to play the test tone and raise the volume to 0db (MASTER VOLUME) so that the test tone can be read by my sound level meter. This was automatic with my previous Denon, but not on this unit. Also, heat is not a problem either. I got one of those nice fans that sit on top of the unit. Never gets above 81F during use. It sounds great now.

Upgraded from my Onkyo RZ50 to have more power for my 4ohm speakers and I am so happy I did! My speakers ( Kef R series) came to life with this 4800h and I can hear more detail in movies. Was well worth the wait. Just wish Denon offered a more premium remote control at this price point and Dirac was included. Make sure you upgrade firmware to the latest before continue with setup
Pros: Great amp Great clarity
Cons: Cheap remote Dirac not available yet and will be more $
