Great product. Dust cover is perfect for me.
Anthony from Garden City, NY on 3/24/2025
I liked it so much I bought a second one for my second setup. One receiver has a phono input and the other does not so I used the built-in phono preamp on turntable . Both worked well. Regarding the dust cover - the available space in my cabinet required me to put it in a shelf with only 9 inches of clearance. A traditional hinged dust cover would not work in that space. This removeable dust cover on this is perfect for me.

Great turntable
Josh from Radford VA on 3/13/2025
I give this turntable four stars because it is a really good turntable. It's just the stylus and cartridge on it really sucks but I'm glad they did that because I rather pay $500 for with a turntable with a stylus that is not good. Then pay $800 for our turntable with an expensive stylus that I still don't like. So I definitely understand why they put a cheap one on there. But if you listen to this turntable once in awhile, then the stylus and cartridge will probably be fine for you. If it's a passion for you then you're definitely going to want to change it out in my opinion. As for the phono preamp it is a really decent one. That I can tell so far when I get a different stylus and a cartridge this week then I'll know if it's really good or not. But so far I can tell it's really decent. But you can always buy another phono preamp if you don't like the one in it. As for the speeds of the turntable, I checked it and it is very very accurate. I mean very accurate. I've owned three turntables and they've all been fairly accurate but never dead on like this one. So that is a huge plus and it does not skip when you walk by it or vibrations. It does not cause it to skip. The it is very easy to assemble and get going in the body of it is very very firm a little weight. I got the white one and it is beautiful. Lee's fingerprints pretty easy but it's worth it. So if you want a good turntable I highly recommend this one. I truly don't believe you'd be disappointed
Pros: Great weight doesn't skip a really really tough MDF body on it. I tested the speed and it is very accurate and it looks absolutely beautiful and it's got a pretty decent phono preamp built into it
Cons: The cord that you use to plug it in to the wall had a short in it but I bought another cord and turntable is working great. Don't much care for the dust cover but the turntable works so great. It's not a deal-breaker so I got over it ??

Pleased so far but with one exception...
Robert from JUPITER, FL on 3/7/2025
So far, pleased with the DP-400. Ergonomics and design are great. Could come with a slightly better cartridge but very few included cartridges are ever up to the standard purchasers are looking for. My only issue is with the cover. It looks cool but does little to help prevent dust from getting into every nook and cranny. I ended up purchasing the acrylic Pro-Ject Cover it RPM 1/3 Carbon from Crutchfield and the fit is perfect.
Pros: Great Value Great Design
Cons: Bad Cover

I had a technics turntable I bought in the early 80's for I think in the 180.00 range and found that it got damaged in the move to our new home. This thing is light years ahead in quality and workmanship (even though I loved my old one). I would recommend it to anyone looking for the perfect priced and solid for what it is turntable.

Couldn't get over the cover
Cort from Hartland, VT on 12/10/2024
I'll give it 3 stars to be fair, never actually played a record on it. Item felt well made, assembly was easy until I had to balance the tone arm. A literal turn of a fraction of a degree either way would send arm shooting up or down. Then I put the cover on it stepped back and tried to like it , but overall visually appalling to me.also a dust magnet. May have kept it if it had a traditional cover. Ended up buying from a company in Canada.
Pros:
Cons: Cover, difficulty of balancing tone arm.

Easy to set up out of the box. Cartridge could be better. Adequate for my present system. It replaces a Pioneer PL-518 from 1979. Disappointed when comparing it to the 518. But then they say they don't build "em" like they used too. Definitely consider a cartridge upgrade.
Pros: Reasonable price. Easy setup.
Cons: Needs a cartridge upgrade.

Good sounding, attractive semi-automatic turntable
Lynn from Raleigh, NC on 6/18/2024
Transitioning from a fully automatic Audio-Technica turntable to this semi-automatic Denon DP-400 was not difficult and the sound is definitely worth it, a big improvement over the AT turntable with the ability to upgrade the cartridge down the road. Right now I am happy with cartridge supplied. Set up is mostly a breeze. The only slightly difficult part is setting up the cartridge, this being my first time. Even so, the directions are pretty good because I got through it Ok. The sound is really good. The look is cool.
Pros: 1. Great sound. 2. The arm lowering mechanism is nicely damped. Lands softly on the vinyl. 3. Easy setup. 4. Good looks.
Cons: 1. Of the many albums that I have tried, there are a few albums that do not automatically stop. Some are new and some old.

Pros:
Cons: Dust cover does not cover entire turntable and is a pain to put back on

Good looking, good sounding, very nice.
Joe from Ft Collins, CO on 4/11/2024
Thank you to Kevin in sales support for the recommendation. Finally pulled the trigger. I bought this with an Ethereal CS-C5SA1 Balun as my receiver and all of the connections are in a rack a distance away from the location for this player. This is remotely connected to my Denon AVR-A1H. Denon's included instructions were thorough enough to get it working the first time. It felt a little bit like safe cracking setting up the counterweight. But all of the instructions worked out great and it worked immediately. I am happy that the player had both options for use in a phono and an aux configuration. The first record I tried is 40 years old, and has seen some things since I bought it back then. But even with the pops, the player played it flawlessly. I then threw in a much better maintained album probably 35 years old and it was like butter. I didn't think my first record would demonstrate the audio range, but the second one did. Perfection. Was enjoying it so much I learned about the autostop feature. It lifted the arm and turned off the turntable when it hit center. So now I need to find a decent vinyl store to grow the collection again.
Pros: I like the little thing that holds the cover when it's not in use, that doubles as a album cover stand to show what's playing. Feature and configuration rich. Easy to tune the weight of the arm, the skate, etc.
Cons: The cover is quite ugly. I might have somebody fabricate a nicer one that can be used while it's playing.

Plays 78s and auto stops, at pricing for morrals
Mike from San Diego, CA on 3/30/2024
It auto stops, and plays 78s. Those two features were musts for me and this was pretty much the only one available at mortal pricing that did that. The stock cartridge is pretty meh. I swapped it with a Goldring E3, and it sounds great. (Had a crazy good deal on that needle, otherwise I would put a 2M Blue on there). I really love that it is fully manual, except for the auto stop feature. My girls have picked up playing it easily since it is so minimalist and clean looking. Makes it look simple and inviting. Overall it is great - and I think it catches too much scrutiny because it is associated with the 450 which has terrible USB functionality that you really don't need, has garish looking extra buttons and is more overpriced. This often forgotten slimmed down version of the 450 is great, without trimming any of the pros from the higher model. Overall, I'm really happy with it, read the cons below for a few drawbacks. Some designer decided they would not compromise on this looking like a work of art and break the clean visual aesthetic with an acrylic display case over it. They definitely put design way over functionality.
Pros: Looks great, good feel, auto stop works like a charm - raising the arm and stopping the motor when you're not in the room. Head shell is easily swappable for going between 78 and 33 needles.
Cons: A little overpriced, but I got mine refurbished for $400. At that price I think it is fair. The dust cover is just plain dumb, I'm already finding cat hair on the needle since it is exposed. I'm probably going to find some sort of vinyl soft cover to put over it. Still, this was the only record player I could find that had everything I needed - the dust cover I can live with. You know, first world problems. :)

I had an issue after about 6 uses where the tone arm quit lifting off the platter when it reached the end of the LP. Nice table under $500
Perry from Hawaii on 8/5/2023
Buzzing noise when using the Phono input on my Arcam integrated amp. Thankfully the table came with built in preamp which buzzing went away. Compared the sound with a Cambridge Audio Solo phono preamp and can't hardly tell the difference. Denon been around for a long time and been making great components and this table is a good example at its price point. Also mahalo to Crutchfield for always fast free delivery to Hawaii.

Dave from Indialantic , FL on 4/17/2023
Got the DP400 about 3 weeks ago and was very excited, but thst quickly went away. Aesthetically it is awesome!! Like the dust cover not being connected so it doesn't pick up vibrations. It is solid and well made. On to my problems. The motor makes a slight noise thst can be heard if you put your ear to the unit and can definitely hear when turned up some while playing an album especially between tracks, drives me nuts. I also think the vibration resistance is lacking, small bumps and motion are carried through the tone arm. For me I am returning, looking at other options. Really wanted to keep this!
Pros: Build, aesthetics,
Cons: Motor noise

High Value Turntable-Denon DP-400
Glenn from Winchester, VA on 2/5/2023
I have never had a bad experience with any Denon product. This DP400 is a step up from my Audio Technica 120. It is "dead" quiet while running in a completely quiet room. I tried it with the Denon factory cartridge and it sounds very good and detailed, but not wonderful. I then tried it with an Audio Technica 530EN cartridge and it did sound a bit better over all. So I tried the new Audio Technica 540ML cartridge and voila! It is worth the extra money for the 540ML. The highs are much cleaner, the midrange is perfect fo my tastes and it has plenty of presence in the lows. In my opinion, the AT540ML is a very good match for this turntable. I am running the cartridge with 2 grams of down pressure and have the anti skate control set at 2.0
Pros: Well built, good looking, easy to assemble, extremely quiet-no noise or hum, sounds great with factory cartridge but better with an AT540ML cartridge installed.
Cons: None

Good Sound, but Lousy Customer Service
Robert from Houston, TX on 2/2/2023
It's a great turntable and sounds great even with the stock cartridge! Also, the only one I found with a removable dust cover that anchors on the spindle to keep the cleaning lady from knocking it sideways when dusting! ( I don't have enough overhead clearance on my stereo stack for a hinged dust cover.) However, I have two major complaints with Denon: (1) My previous DP-400 turntable after about 3 years service suffered a stuck tonearm weight, rendering the tonearm unbalanced. My assumption is that long term quality of the equipment suffers from shifting manufacturing to Asia.(2) Denon would not provide any assistance with repair to my failed equipment since it was more than 2 years old. Furthermore, there is no service center in Houston, the fourth largest city in the USA. So, even though I think Denon has lousy customer service I grit my teeth and bought a new unit because the DP-400 is the only turntable I could find that meets my needs.

Beautiful Looking and Sounding Turntable!
Jillian from Kansas City, MO on 8/2/2022
Awesome turntable, but did as reviews suggested and bought the Audio-Technica VM540ML cartridge so I would have a better needle. It makes sense they wouldn't put a great needle on it because then it would be too pricey for some, who could always buy a better one when they could afford to. One point of contention, it came with the preamp switched to on. Which made it sound awful when I attached it to the phono choice on my receiver. So if yours doesn't sound amazing check that switch and turn it off if it's on!!
Pros: Great for people who don't have the space for a turntable with a normal, hinged dust cover. Looks like a work of art and sounds amazing!
Cons: Make sure preamp is switched to off if you are hooking it up to a receiver, as the instructions didn't mention that.

I upgraded my audio system this year and chose this turntable to listen to my vinyl collection. I was on a budget and I found this turntable easy to set up and sounds great as is, with included needle/cartrdrige. I have experience in balancing the tone arm but you can find great tutorials on this if you are having trouble- once you get it you are ready to listen-- think parallel glide ! I saw the negative reviews about the cover but I don't have issues with it- it covers what it needs to and is minimal. It comes with a heavyweight stand for said cover and holds the cover and one album sleeve which is an old school nod and thoughtful whether you use it or not. I got this turntable in gloss black and love it. I have a Cambridge receiver and Martin Logan speakers {also gloss black} and the sound is warm and rich, as analog should be. For the money, I am very happy with this and would recommend to anyone who wants to upgrade their analog vinyl listening experience.
Pros: easy set up, good sound for the money

So far, after owning it for 10 days, I'm very pleased with my new Denon DP-400 turntable. I gave it a 4 star rating because there are a few things that could be a bit better designed (see cons below). Overall, my true rating is somewhere between 4 and 5; call it 4.5. I'm happy with it and would recommend it to a friend. It's doing a great job of enabling me to enjoy my ~200+ old albums again.
Pros: The sound quality is very good, and better than I expected. It appears to be well built. The weight of it and the support feet are such that it has good stability and resistance to vibration. Setting up the tone arm counterweight and tracking force was very easy and seems to work well. I like the power and speed control knob, although it is still fairly easy to forget to turn the power off completely.
Cons: The automatic tone arm lift and shutoff work as promised but with most albums it takes longer than I expected. Often 3-4 rotations, where you hear the stylus click at the end of it's track. The tone arm lift/lower lever is a bit short, and it's far enough back on the table that you need to be careful reaching back for it. These 2 "cons" could be designed better. The dust cover is fairly ridiculous. It doesn't fully enclose the table, and the design to hold album covers isn't really useful.

Feedback
Kirby from Ellicott City, MD on 1/29/2020
Overall the turntable looks good. However, I am experiencing really bad feedback. The unit is located on a very stable console table and the distance to the speaker is about 6 ft. I have a Technics receiver and a pair of Klipsch Heresy's. I am getting feedback even at very low volumes. I did change the cartridge to an Ortofon Blue (with headshell), which is set to the proper force. Even when I revert back to the factory headshell it still produces the feedback. Not sure if this is an inherent problem or if I am missing a setup step for the suspension.
Pros: Looks good
Cons: Nasty feedback

Excellent turntable- but some assembly required!
Crutchfield customer from Washington, DC on 1/28/2020
Great turntable with excellent sound. Be prepared to assemble the stylus and arm. Probably customary, but still makes one a little wary about whether you got it exactly right. Instructions were only so-so in this regard.

Great Turntable
Crutchfield customer from Lagrange, GA on 8/23/2019
Great little turntable! I needed the ability to play 33 and 78 albums. This fit the bill. I plan on replacing the head and cartridge later with an upgrade for the 33s. I chose to invest more in my headend equipment and speakers than something to play my old albums.

Great Record Player, But Needs Hinged Dust Cover
Crutchfield customer from Kennesaw, GA on 8/18/2019
Very good record player. I preferred a fully automatic player, but I was concerned about quality. So I choose this semi-automatic player. The only reason I did not give it a five star rating is the dust cover is not a hinged dust cover. I had to separately purchase a 3rd party cover custom made for this player.
Pros: Quality product, easy to upgrade cartridge in the future, RCA output (instead of a short prewired RCA cable), easy setup.
Cons: The dust cover is not a hinged dust cover.

Excellent semi-automatic turntable!
Crutchfield customer from Evansville, IN on 8/18/2019
Great turntable. Really like the semi automatic function, where the tonearm lifts up and the motor shuts down at the end of a record. That is very helpful.. Very easy to set up. I added an Ortofon 2m blue cartridge with Sh-4 headshell, sounds great.not a big fan of the removable dust cover and record jacket stand. Would prefer a traditional dust cover.
Pros: Semi-automatic lift off and shut down
Cons: Dust cover

I bought this turn table for my father who is 88 and has a nice collection of Latin music from the many years ago and in many different styles. This turn table has completely revived the records and they sound like new. He listens to music everyday ; I am very pleased with this product. ( I also have a collection of jazz and classical music and listen often!)
Pros: Great sound, compact size; very simple connections; I appreciate that it can be connected to a "phono" input as well as "Aux" inputs. I use the phono because I have an older McIntosh amplifier and the phono inputs seems to sound better.
Cons: It is "semi-automatic" which means you lower the tone arm manually and at the end of the record the arm lifts and stops the turntable which might seem difficult for an older person. The initial set up might be difficult for many people but the instructions are very clear.

A really nice turntable. Looks great and was really easy to set up. Solid build, loving the white finish! 2 points are keeping it from getting 5 stars. First point is my fault as I did not fully research the features of this turntable. It was listed as an "Automatic" turntable, which, to me, meant that the tone arm would place itself on the record and then return after shut off. This turntable just has automatic shut off whereby the tone arm lifts up (eventually) and the platter stops. The other point would be the cartridge that comes with the turntable. It is definitely adequate, but an upgrade is definitely needed. Other than that, I am really enjoying this turntable!
Pros: Solid build. Great looks. Ease of set-up
Cons: Not fully automatic Cartridge adequate.

The turntable arrived about two weeks ago so I've not had it long enough for a comprehensive review. However, it does fill the bill for me! I wanted a table with "auto-stop" and all three speeds. Not many higher end tables offer those two features, not to mention convenient speed change by switch instead of having to change belt pulley's. Is it the same quality as say a Rega turntable? I don't think so, but Rega does not offer the features I demanded. I probably will up-grade the cartridge at some point but frankly, the included cartridge sounds better than I expected! All N all, in the short time I've had it, I'm quite happy with it. Slightly overpriced maybe but again has the features I wanted! I would certainly recommend this turntable to anyone looking for the same features.
Pros: Does everything it claims to do & does it well! Lots of convenient features (speed change & auto stop).
Cons: Somewhat over priced by Denon. Should include a better cartridge & perhaps higher quality cables.

Very nice!

Honestly, for the money, this is one nice little TT. I bought this for three reason, #1 Semi-Auto, must have. #2 and #3, I can use my own cables and it has a ground stud. Set this up properly, use a protractor and a stylus scale, plenty of videos on YouTube, the protractors can be printed off the internet or I am sure Crutchfield can hook you up. The stylus scale can be had for around $5. I did not use the included stylus or cartridge, as that is where you are going to hear the difference in sound, spend some money on a good cartridge. I would look to YouTube for one of those, they have some listening sessions where you can get an idea of the sound with individual cartridges. Setup properly, I would recommend an external phono preamp, use some good quality cables and this TT really impresses. I had friends over the other day, and they thought I was playing a CD, and that is not a lie. You can get some incredible sound out of this guy. The only reason this TT did not get 5 stars is that it does not have a dust cover, so, I made my own. If you have a cat, or cats, you will need to figure something out. On a side note, this TT is dead silent in my system. I also own the Denon DP-300, which I could never quite get a feedback loop or hum out of. No such issues with the DP-400, DEAD SILENT.
Pros: Semi-Auto RCA outputs, I can use the cables of my choice. A ground stud, very important, at least to me.
Cons: No dust cover! I built my own. Feet do not level, you need to shim.

This unit replaced my old Yamaha YP-211. I wanted a semi-automatic table and this foots the bill. My old albums and 45's sound re-vitalized and clear again. Thanks to Ed whom I called when I was having difficulty with my receiver. He was very patient as we methodically eliminated possibilities and finally ended up switching out various RCA connections until the tt operated as it should. Some of the soldered connections on the rear of the receiver had loosened up during a recent move.
Pros: semi-automatic; different looking but still sleek; sound was very pure with pre-installed cartridge.
Cons: Haven't really found anything yet

Denon has done it again. I'm enjoying getting back into Vinyl Records and listening to authentic music once again. My only concern is with the stock cartridge that comes with the turntable. I'll be replacing it an upgraded cartridge, but other that I would recommend the DP-400...
