A classic woofer with a new twist

The ES 100K uses Focal's classic "W" sandwich cone woofer design to reproduce your audio with incredible accuracy. The nimble Kevlar and glass-fiber woofers demonstrate the control needed to play delicate classical passages, yet they'll handle the power needed to drive your bass-heavy tracks with authority. Focal adds a new Tuned Mass Damper (TMD®) rubber surround to the woofer design which minimizes harmonic distortion for the cleanest midrange possible.

A redesigned tweeter

The separate 13/16" tweeter employs a one-of-a-kind "M"-shaped inverted aramid fiber dome design that does a better job than ever of dispersing the highs with remarkable precision, all the way up to 22,000 Hz. The K2 Power crossovers use hand-made components developed by Focal to deliver an ideal blend of the highs and lows for a dynamic stereo image. Three levels of tweeter control let you dial in the sound to your car's environment.

Woofer

K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer. This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent damping characteristics.

Surround: Focal's patented butyl rubber TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) surround helps control unwanted resonances, providing a clean and neutral midrange with very low harmonic distortion.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Neodymium Magnets: Each woofer uses a Neodymium magnet, which has a magnetic field strength similar to a ceramic magnet approximately 10 times its size, reducing the size and weight of the speaker.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome: The "M" profile, Aramid fiber, inverted dome tweeter is designed to increase precision at very high frequencies. The push-pull motor also damps acoustic resonances on the back of the membrane and extends the low end of the frequency response.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters, or the trim ring can be removed and the protective washers added for mounting in a factory tweeter location. The included angled cup allows surface mounting at one of two angles; approximately 60° and approximately 40°.

Crossover

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality. Thermal camera imaging is used to optimize component power dissipation, improve reliability, and lower temperature.

Slope: The crossover uses 2nd order, 12 dB/octave low-pass and high-pass filters. The crossover point for both is 3,500 Hz.

Tweeter Level: A three position switch on the crossover allows you to adjust the output level of the tweeter to -3 dB, 0 dB, or +3 dB.

Band-Pass: Another switch (on/off) on the crossover allows you to engage a 12 dB/octave high-pass crossover to remove the lower bass from the 4" woofer.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide.

How do you open the crossover to set the high pass filter? There doesn't seem to be any screws to open up the plastic covering...

Can you bi-amp these? ie drive the 4 inch and 1 inch separately using a 4ch amp

No they are not according to the users manual, and the crossover included. Bi amp setups for components require two power inputs and this set only has one.

Hi, i am not sure you really answered the question, because I have the same question. Adding a 6.5 Mid-Woofer is not adding a SubWoofer. I also wanted to simply add an 6.5 mid-driver to the ES 100K set (tweet + 4" mid driver) and then buy the 3-way crossover from the 165kx3 to drive all three passively. Why would this not sound good? I asked a Local rep but they tried to suggest even the focal 3way 165kx3 crossover would not dribe this wet well, but It deas not make much snese to me... the only difference would be you get a larger 4" mid instead of the 3" that comes with the 165kx3 pckage. This way is a way less expensive route to get a 3 way, but I ma not sure why it wouldnt sound great? My guess is they just want to tell you no, so you have to pay 2,700 for their packaged 3way :). Any thoughts?

would it be wise or feasible to add a 6.5" woofer to the Focal Es100 k 4" components in order to create a 3 way system? I already have the Es 100k 4" and would like to purchase the 6.5" woofers to complement the system. if so, which woofers would I use, and would my current crossovers work in that application? For example, could I go semi active? i.e.) Es100 k 4" with the current tweeter and passive crossover then active with the 6.5" woofers added to the system? Does this make sense.... or should I get a whole new component set with the 6.5"'s included?

Another option...continue to run the ES100K set as-is (2-way with the provided passive crossover). Introduce an electronic crossover and run a set of Focal 6.5" midbass drivers (they may be available from some dealers as a Focal 165 Midrange Kit) off another 2 channels of amplifier power.

The crossovers provided with the ES 100K do not offer a provision for adding a subwoofer. You can still add a sub to your system; you'll just need a separate amp to power it. You can use the low-pass crossovers provided in your aftermarket stereo or the sub amp to ensure the sub(s) only receive the bass frequencies.
