About the Focal FDP 6.900 V2

Buck Pomerantz

Up to 6 channels of high-powered fun

Focal's FDP 6.900 six-channel amplifier can deliver a massive 150 watts RMS per speaker — front dash, front doors, and rear deck speakers, for example — so your music will sound clear and powerful throughout your vehicle. You can also configure the amp to drive an active 3-way tweeter, mid, and woofer system with precise signal distribution and frequency-tuned outputs. For maximum oomph, you can bridge all three pairs of channels together and send 400 watts RMS to each of a pair of high-performance speakers, plus 500 watts RMS to a subwoofer.

Tuning

The FDP 6.900 V2's extensive filter section optimizes the amp for your speakers and subwoofers. In bandpass filter mode, the amp can drive individual woofers, tweeters, and other drivers with power and signal tailored for maximum efficiency and fidelity.

Remote control and clip light

Focal includes a wired remote bass level controller, which works on channels 5/6, so you can tweak your bass from song to song from your front seat. This remote also features an LED clip light that'll let you know if you're overloading the amp.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Focal FDP 6.900 V2 is a full-range Class D 6-channel amplifier. Its Class D design and compact aluminum chassis offer efficient dissipation of heat for reliable performance. The amp can be used to drive four full-range speakers, bi-amping a pair of component speakers, or bridged for two subwoofers. With multiple crossovers built-in, you can configure the amplifier for low-pass, high-pass, or band-pass applications.

Power Output: measured at 14.4 volts and 1% THD

  • 150 watts RMS x 6 into 4-ohms
  • 200 watts RMS x 6 into 2-ohms
  • 150 watts RMS x 4 into 4-ohms + 500 watts RMS x 1 into 4-ohms (channels 5 and 6 bridged)
  • 200 watts RMS x 4 into 2-ohms + 500 watts RMS x 1 into 4-ohms (channels 5 and 6 bridged)

Sub Mode: In Sub Mode, inputs 5 and 6 are mixed to mono for bridged operation. The crossover slope changes to 24dB/octave and the subwoofer remote level control is activated. There is also a high-pass subsonic filter that eliminates very low frequencies that the subwoofer cannot play cleanly, and may cause damage.

Wired Remote: The included wired remote is activated when the channel 5/6 amplifier section is set to Sub mode. (The remote is only useful when channels 5/6 are powering a subwoofer.) The remote housing has integrated flanges, and screws are included to mount the unit under the dash. The included 16' cable connects the remote to the amplifier. The cable is standard RJ-25 phone cable if you need a different length. The remote also has an integrated clipping indicator light.

Remote Dimensions:

  • Width: 1.6" (2.55" including mounting flanges)
  • Height: 0.8"
  • Depth: 1.53" (2.375" including knob and wire)

Signal Inputs: The RCA inputs will accept either speaker-level or preamp signals from your car's head unit. Speaker-level signals are connected to the RCA inputs using speaker wire-to-RCA adapters (sold separately).

Selectable Balanced/Unbalanced Inputs: The amp features internal DIP switches that allow you to change the standard unbalanced input setting to balanced floating ground to minimize noise. The amplifier's end panel must be removed to change the switch positions.

Auto Turn-on: When using speaker-level inputs, the amp will turn on automatically when it senses the input signal.

Mounting Brackets: Two types of mounting brackets are included:

  • Flange: Brackets are bolted to both ends of the amp, creating a mounting flange on each side. The flange protrudes 0.4" from each side of the amp and adds an eighth of an inch to the height.
  • Invisible: The invisible bracket is not seen outside the amp's footprint. It fits into the bottom panel, has tabs that fit inside the amplifier, and bolts to the end panels. The 14" x 2.75" bracket is attached to the mounting surface, then the amp is mounted to the bracket with the included hardware. Nothing is added to any dimension of the amp.

Controls:

  • Input Mode: 3-position switch:
    • 2: a single pair of stereo inputs feeds all six amplifier channels (connect to the channel 1 and 2 inputs)
    • 4: connect to channel 1, 2, 3 and 4 inputs; channels 1/3 and 2/4 feed channels 5/6 respectively
    • 6: dedicated inputs for all six amplifier channels
  • Channels 1 and 2:
    • Level: rotary dial; set channel 1 and 2 input gain; range from 0.2-8 volts; a red LED flashes when clipping distortion is detected
    • Crossover: 3-position switch; choose Flat (full-range), High-Pass, or Copy 3+4 (typically used when bridging channels 1/2 and 3/4, or when both outputs require a band-pass crossover)
    • Frequency: rotary dial; high-pass crossover point variable from 50 Hz to 4 kHz
  • Channels 3 and 4:
    • Level: rotary dial; set channel 3 and 4 input gain; range from 0.2-8 volts; a red LED flashes when clipping distortion is detected
    • Crossover: 3-position switch; choose Flat (full-range), High-Pass, or Low-Pass/Band-Pass
    • Mode: 2-position switch; used when the crossover switch is set to Low-Pass/Band-Pass; Low-Pass or Band-Pass (both high-pass and low-pass crossovers are engaged)
    • High-Pass Frequency: rotary dial; high-pass crossover point variable from 50 Hz to 4 kHz
    • Low-Pass Frequency: rotary dial; low-pass crossover point variable from 50 Hz to 4 kHz
  • Channels 5 and 6:
    • Level: rotary dial; set channel 5 and 6 input gain; range from 0.2-8 volts; a red LED flashes when clipping distortion is detected
    • Crossover: 3-position switch; choose Flat (full-range), High-Pass, or Low-Pass/Band-Pass
    • Mode: 3-position switch; used when the crossover switch is set to Low-Pass/Band-Pass; Low-Pass, Band-Pass, or Sub (mixes channel 5 and 6 inputs to mono, switches to 24 dB/octave crossovers, remote level control activated)
    • High-Pass Frequency: rotary dial; high-pass crossover point variable from 10 Hz to 120 Hz (can be used as sub sonic filter)
    • Low-Pass Frequency: rotary dial; low-pass crossover point variable from 45 Hz to 1 kHz

Connections:

  • Power: set screw terminals for power and ground; accept up to 4-gauge wire (4-gauge recommended); 4mm Allen head
  • Remote: set screw terminal; accepts up to 12-gauge wire; 2mm Allen head
  • Speaker Outputs: six pair of set screw terminals; accept up to 12-gauge wire; 2mm Allen head
  • Inputs: 8 RCA input jacks; accept preamp or speaker-level signals; speaker wire-to-RCA adapters needed when using speaker-level signals (sold separately)
  • Sub Control: RJ-25 port for use with included wired remote; controls output level of channels 5 and 6 when in Sub mode
  • Fuses: three 25-amp ATO fuses are mounted inside the amp chassis (behind the right side plate, mounted with four 2.5mm Allen head screws)
