headphones and transmitter

The RS 175 includes a comfortable pair of over-the-ear headphones and a wireless transmitter with a choice of virtual surround sound modes and dynamic bass boost.

Hear crystal clear dialogue and special effects — without disturbing family members. (Or getting phone calls from neighbors!) The Sennheiser RS 175 headphone system puts you in the middle of the on-screen action with a choice of two virtual surround sound modes. Connect the included wireless transmitter to your TV or receiver's optical digital or analog output, put the headphones on, and listen to your show, movie, or game. No one else needs to hear a thing.

Listening to music is enjoyable, too. Move around your room freely while your tunes play. If you need a little more oomph, a dynamic bass boost button lets you add some low-frequency power.

Huge wireless range and rechargeable headset batteries

Need to run to the fridge, and don't want to miss important play-by-play or dialogue? Sennheiser's wireless link technology gives you a listening range of up to 328 feet. The headset and transmitter are paired at the factory, so there's no need to do it yourself. The headphones are powered by "AAA" rechargeable batteries (included). With the batteries inserted, just hang the headphones atop the transmitter and charging will automatically begin. You'll get up to 18 hours of use with a full charge.

Plush padding and earcup buttons for easy control

Comfort is important when choosing any headphones, especially if you use them to watch an entire movie or show. The RS 175's headset features thick padding on the headband and earcups, so you can enjoy its crystal-clear sound for long periods. If you need to adjust the volume, don't worry — you won't need to get up or mess with the TV remote. There are built-in volume buttons on the right earcup. That's where you'll also find buttons to toggle between surround sound modes and the dynamic bass boost.

Get an extra headset so you and someone else can enjoy the same show.

More details on the Sennheiser RS 175

The Sennheiser RS 175 replaces these items:

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser RS 175 Digital Wireless headphone system consists of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 175) and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (TR 175). The system is designed to enhance the sound of your TV or your home audio source, and to give you the freedom to walk around your home with the headphones on.

Wireless Headphones: The HDR 175's wireless headphones feature a circum-aural (around-the-ear), closed design to significantly reduce background noise. The soft-padded ear cups and headband provide hours of listening comfort. The headphones have controls on the right ear cup: power on/off, volume up, volume down, surround (to activate Virtual Surround Sound), and bass (to activate the Dynamic Bass Boost feature). With the batteries installed, the HDR 175 headphones weigh approximately 10.9 ounces.

Note: You can purchase replacement ear pads here.

TR 175 Transmitter: The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output via the included 3.5mm cable or optical digital cable (accepts 2ch PCM audio only). You can switch between the two inputs with a provided toggle switch. The audio is transmitted on the 2.4 GHz band (2.40 to 2.48 GHz) with 8-FSK Digital modulation. The transmitter can send signals to up to 2 pairs of headphones at the same time. The extended transmission range is approximately 328 feet (100 meters) without obstructions. (Typical performance with obstructions will be somewhat less.) The transmitter is powered by a 9-volt DC power supply/AC adapter. Adapter plugs for the US, Europe, UK, and Australia are provided, allowing for use in other countries. The transmitter doubles as a convenient charging cradle for the headphones. Transmitter dimensions: 4.96"W x 9.264"H x 3.96"D.

Rechargeable Batteries: The headphones are powered by the two included "AAA" rechargeable NiMH batteries (1.2V, 820mAh). The batteries fully charge in approximately 8.5 hours, when placed on the top of the transmitter. Battery life is approximately 18 hours of use. Standard, non-rechargeable "AAA" batteries may be used in the headphones, but the headphones must not be placed on the charging cradle.

Auto Power Off: If there is no signal from the transmitter for more than 5 minutes, the headphones automatically switch to standby mode. If the headphones are outside the transmission range or switched to off for more than 5 minutes, the transmitter automatically switches to standby mode.

Dynamic Bass Boost: The RS 175's Dynamic Bass Boost feature raises the intensity of the bass when activated. You can turn the Bass Boost on or off by pressing the Bass button on the transmitter, or on the headphones.

Virtual Surround Sound: The headphone system offers two virtual surround sound modes (Hi/Lo) that simulate the presence of external speakers. Special signal processing produces a spatial sound quality, with differences in intensity between the Hi and Lo modes. You can engage Virtual Surround Sound from the transmitter or the headphones.

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 17Hz - 22kHz
  • Maximum Sound Pressure Level: 114dB at 1kHz, 3% THD
  • Total Harmonic Distortion: <0.5% at 1 kHz, 100dB SPL
  • Transmission Range: Up to 100m (328')

Q
I want to use these so I can watch TV without disturbing someone in the next room. I have the RS175 plugged into my Yamaha RX v667 Receiver in the PRE OUT FRONT jacks on the back using a mini-to-RCA audio cable. When I turn on the headphones, I'm getting great sound, but the sound is also coming out of my 7-Channel surround sound speakers through the Yamaha receiver. If I mute the receiver it mutes the headphones as well. The customer sales rep at Crutchfield told me I could listen to TV on these through my receiver without having sound come out of the rest of the speakers. What setting am I missing here so I can do this?

Please reach out to our tech support team for help with exploring the other connections on your receiver. It is likely that we can use the ZONE 2 OUT connections for this application, assuming that Zone 2 is not currently in use for other purposes in your home. Our toll-free tech support number is printed on your invoice, and is also available under the "My Orders" tab in the "My Account" section of our website.

Q
Does the RS-175 have a balance control, and if so is it on the phones or the base station? My old RS-185 had balance on the phones, which is great, but I can't tell with the 175.
christopher joh  Aug 26, 2022

A
Greetings Chris, and thank you for your question. The RS 175s have volume, surround sound mode, and dynamic bass boos controls on the headset. No balance controls like the RS185. You have to step up to the RS195 to get balance control.

My RS175 unit works well on all the stations on my cable box. However, I get no audio when I switch the TV to Amazon Prime or Netflix. What's the answer? Is there a separate switch/connection?
warren  Dec 15, 2021

I have zero issues with this unit. Works like a charm. Have you switched your TV audio so that it's output is to the headphones? Are you getting your Netflix and Prime from a smart TV or something like a ROKU? This might affect how the audio gets to the headset. I have to adjust the "sound" from the TV to "sound system" as opposed to TV audio. I generally only use these with Netflix and Prime so if the above isn't the problem I don't know. Hope this helps

I am using this unit every morning on my cable box. And I can listen to the music/conversation when I switch the TV to YOU TUBE.
peter y  Dec 15, 2021
A
Without seeing your setup,I have to make a guess. It sounds like you have the input for the headphones hooked directly to the cable box output. The headphones need to be connected to an audio out on your tv/A/V receiver/soundbar. This could be through an optical out, rca jacks or a headphone output with an rca adapter. Hope this helps!

Hi Gloria, I love Gloria's name, but I don't get to hear it as much as I would like to. It is nice to meet you electronically, at least. My mane is Timothy, but I go by Tim. I have been using my RS 175 every day for about a year now, and it has performed flawlessly since startup. I am glad to help you in any way I can. If you would be so kind as to provide some more details, I will see what I can do to help you. Tim

no, the instructions were pretty clear.

You can only use one input (optical cable or standard red/white "patch cords") You can't use both. Also, be sure your audio format is set to PCM. If you aren't getting sound, that might be the problem. Hope this helps.

A
Nope.

We have cable TV. So we connected the RS 175 directly to the cable box by optic cable, rather than the tv and have had no problems. Excellent product.

Q
What do I need to use my rs175 on 2 tv ?????
gary  Jan 08, 2021
3 answers
A
The RS 175 sends an audio signal from your TV to the transmitter box, and from the transmitter box wirelessly to the headphones. To use 2 TV's you would need a splitter switch that would allow you to direct the audio from the TV you want to the transmitter and then to the headphones.

Not sure if I understand the question but no special tools just followed the directions to audio out input.Maybe you need technical support and maybe so do I.

Q
will the RS 175 headphone work with any TV no matter how old or do you need certain connection capability?
lloyd john  Nov 12, 2020
2 answers
A
You will need a digital Audio output on the TV or a headphone output to connect the headphones to directly to the TV. If you are using an AV amp, you will need a digital output or headphone jack from the AV receiver. Talk to a Crutchfield Tech for a workaround
edward  Nov 16, 2020

I just looked on the back of my RS 175 base station and my connection is to the optical port of the base to the TV. Looks to me you would need an optical port coming from the TV.

Can others get audio thru the TV speakers while i'm using head phones if transmitter is connecte via the digital cable?
charles  Jun 01, 2020

A
Yes, I have been able to do that without any problems. I use the provided digital, optical cable from the TV output to the digital-optical-in port on the back of the charging stand. Also, I set the audio-input-selection slide switch to the "up" position.
timothy  Jan 18, 2021

I only use the optical cable and others will get sound. You will experience a very distracting echo because of the delay. To the point of not being able to follow dialogue

Not sure about digital however I can use the headphones along with the TV speakers on together.
gary  Jun 03, 2020

Charles, I think ours is connected through the digital cable, and I can listen when the TV isn't muted even tho my husband is listening through his headphones. By the way, he LOVES them - good, rich sound and noise cancelling - much, much better than the last from elsewhere!!

I have this system and read you can buy an additional HDR Headset, but I think you have to charge them separately, I bought extra rechargeable batteries and charger for mine, just incase I need them. You can also shop around and get the entire system closed to the price of 1 headphone.
gary  Mar 31, 2020
A
Yes, I use 2 headsets-one on charge and one in use. Also, both can operate at the same time - for example, 2 people using the headsets to watch a movie,
joseph  Mar 31, 2020
A
Yes, you can use your existing Sennheiser RS 175 system (which already has the transmitter and one set of wireless headphones) and then add a second set of headphones. You'll need to search for Sennheiser HDR 175 on Crutchfield. It should say "Extra headset for RS 175" in the description.

Get the Powered TOS-LINK spliter (TV digital Out to Spliter IN, this splitter has two digital Out) one for sound bar & one for headphone. These splitters are Powered and it works very well in my house.
shailesh v  Nov 21, 2019
A
only if you have two separate audio outputs one for the sound bar and another for the headphones. You should be able to control the sound for the headphones with the headphone itself and the sound bar with its audio controls. Try it and see if this is a good solution, best guess
edward  Nov 18, 2019
A
This will depend on the TV, as well as how you have the headphones and soundbar connected. One of our advisors would be glad to give you more personalized help! https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx
