The sound bubble from the spatial surround is nice. When using the firestick to control tv and amp turn on the receiver makes 3 or 4 loud disturbing clicks when starting up. Not sure what that is but it is concerning.
Pros:
Cons: Loud concerning clicks when first turns on.

Good unit, but...
alan from BURLINGTON, NC on 3/2/2025
Don't get me wrong, I do like this unit. However there are a few things that are,well..."strange". 1st off, at first my Sub would not work in 2 ch. mode. I tried everything I could do, nothing. Then, hey it works! Don't ask me how. Hooked up the Height spks. would not work and later they did but very weak. The EQ is really just settings, Low and Hi. This unit sounds good, real good. Video pass through is clean and surround sound is good to fair depending on what I am looking at on my Roku. As I said I like the unit, not a big monster in size, that is fine by me. Enough in's and out's for my setup. Running Thiel 2.5 speakers and they will crank if I want them to. Good detail and good bass from the 8 inch woofers. Overall good sound with just the right amount of punch with this unit...and yes my unit does sometimes need to have a power reset sometimes. It will power on but no sound, from anything. If you are looking for a good stereo that don't have the "arm and leg" price tag, I say look and this one.
Pros: Clean sound. Has punch. Looks good.
Cons: Sometimes, not often, no sound when turned on. Have to reset. May not be enough inputs for some people. Set up can take time with some repeats.

Not for Audiophiles
Jay from GRAND BLANC, MI on 2/28/2025
The home theater functions of the Sony STR-AN1000 work pretty much as expected. As far as the sound quality goes, it perfectly acceptable for most home theater use. For music listening, the Sony STR-AN1000 falls far short of my expectations. I am using this receiver with Klipsch KG 5.5 tower speakers. Klipsch speakers are generally on the bright side, but with the Sony, the sound seems muted on the high end. I had to bump up the treble slightly which is an ordeal. To adjust the Treble, you hit Home, Setup, Manual Speaker Settings, Equalizer, Front and then scroll over to Treble. Note that while adjusting the 'Equalizer' the sound is cutoff so adjusting the Treble is just a guess. Note too that even though the control says Equalizer, there are only Base and Treble controls. The adjustment helped slightly, but it still did not sound as good as my old Denon 3AVR-3312CI . Note that there is no +/- spec on the frequency response, which makes the numbers given useless. Page 34 of the manual says: "The HDMI IN SA-CD/CD (for AUDIO) and HDMI IN GAME (for AUDIO) inputs have better sound quality..." So the other four HDMI inputs have a lower sound quality. There are several other idiosyncrasies. In summary, I think most people would be very happy to use this receiver in a typical home theater setup. For home theater use, I would rate this receiver a four. If you are highly into music, make your decision wisely. I am still on the fence about returning this receiver
Pros: - Lots of features for typical home theater users.
Cons: - Sound is not up to Audiophile expectations. - Adjusting tone controls is frustrating to say the least. - Audio cannot be heard during tone adjustments. - Not all of the HDMI inputs have "better sound quality". - No FM HD (been around for over 20 years).

Has some good features at a nice price, but the quirks are annoying.
Tom from REDMOND, WA on 12/6/2024
Has some good features at a nice price, but the quirks are annoying. Main issue is the IR remote control is weak. You have to point it RIGHT AT the receiver, and not be too far away. My universal remote (Harmony Elite) has worked with EVERY device I've had. This receiver had it stymied. I tried moving the hub from across the room (where it had been working fine) to a shelf above the receiver. Nope. I dug the repeaters out of storage and put one on the SAME SHELF as the receiver. Nope. I had to TAPE it just inches away from the IR pickup. It does NOT support Bluetooth or WiFi remotes. If using only the TV, then the TV remote works fine, controlling things over ARC. But for DVD and CD jukebox, I need to have a universal remote. Couple other issues are occasionally it will just stop outputting sound. Fiddling with all manner of options does not work. Power cycling is what fixes it. It has also done this a couple times- muted itself. I turn mute off, it goes right back to muted. Again, power cycling fixes it. Works fine with Sony wireless surround speakers. The "auto setup" for sound levels isn't the best, it leaves the surround levels too high and the front levels too low. I had to tweak them.
Pros: Price
Cons: Poor IR remote

Love it some ways, not so much in other ways.
Larry from Westminster, CO on 11/29/2024
The audio is excellent, but the user interface is poor for some things and the user/owner manual is abysmal. After a week I have most things figured out, including (settings changes) how to keep it from turning off with the TV when I just wanted to change to listening music. But one thing I've not solved is why the mute won't stay applied when I'm changing other devices. For instance I've finished a TV show on my DirecTV Genie, so I hit mute to silence it while I'm looking for another channel or another recorded show, but the mute comes undone the instant I hit many of the buttons on the DirecTV remote control, though not quite every button does this. I also had to chase through many settings on both this receiver and on the Sony Bravia 8 TV to reduce the times it changed things automatically that I didn't want changed, from surround mode to device selected to turning various things on or off unexpectedly. I almost never turn off the receiver (50+ years like this), but the TV and the receiver didn't seem to let me do that until I had spent many, many hours trying to find the settings in both devices that allowed me to finally do things my way, instead of the Sony way. Oh it's not the only thing that does this to me, since the Logitech "universal" remote I have had for years has had a similar problem. Not sure if I'll keep it yet... UPDATED 12/9/24: I'll give this unit 4 stars, in spite of the things I don't like, since there's so much to like about it, including excellent versatility, once you figure it out. The audio is excellent, but the user interface is poor for some things and the user/owner manual is abysmal. After a week I have most things figured out, including (settings changes) how to keep it from turning off with the TV when I just wanted to change to listening music. Oh, it's not the only thing that does this to me, since the Logitech "universal" remote I have had for years has had a similar problem. In my previous version of the review I said had a muting problem, but that turned out to be the DirecTV remote, not a Sony problem, so it's a keeper in spite of the other complaints I mention above.

Great Little Receiver with some Great Flexibility
Jonathan from Gate City, VA on 11/3/2024
The Sony STR-AN1000 is a feature packed and great sounding receiver coming in at a great price. This receiver has everything you need to either get into home theater for the first time, or to give you that theater experience in a room that may not be quite suitable for the type of sound someone would want. My space tends to be awkward at times as it is open to a kitchen on one side and a hallway down another so sound can get lost. With Digital Cinema Auto Calibration IX and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping built into this receiver, it was like I was in a bubble of sound and when paired with the matching Sony SA-RS5 taking on the workload of a wireless surround with an up firing Atmos speaker to reflect off the ceiling at my listening area. This gave a very full experience with my Klipsch fronts and sub and even my wife was looking back at the speakers during some movie time as we went through our annual Halloween cinematic rewatches hearing some of those little nuances we have missed before. The only thing that I can really fault it for at this time was there times I found myself turning up the volume beyond what I typically do though this could be related to some of the streaming sources I was using at the time. Would like to try one of the bigger ones in the future to see if I can get a bit more overhead. I would not use this receiver with some more difficult to drive speakers.
Pros: 1) Overall great soundstage due to 360 Spatial Sound Mapping 2) Streaming music was a breeze 3) Options for wireless surrounds exist for those rooms where running wire's are not possible.
Cons: 1) Could use a bit more output for more difficult to drive speakers.

Love the receiver. Has a great amount of power. Online Menu Set-up was a little over complicated, (just because it follows the Android protocol instead of Apples protocol which is more of what I'm used too). The connections were all very solid, and the set-up for the components and speakers was pretty straightforward and easy. Love the ARC control with other Sony components.
Pros: Works well. Solid built. East component recognition and setup.
Cons: The online menu set-up was a little confusing, but very doable.

Sony STR-AN1000
Bill from Bella Vista, AR on 7/25/2024
I purchased the Sony STR-AN1000 to replace a Marantz SR5008, which was a refurbished unit I owned for many years. I read many reviews, both professional and consumer, before taking the plunge in purchasing this av receiver and I am very pleased with the quality and quantity of sound. I have a 5.1 setup using HSU HB1-MK2 speakers with the STF-2 subwoofer, which are very efficient. The HB1-MK2 speakers sounded a bit harsh on the Marantz, but it did reveal the smallest details in music. However, the Sony has a smooth balanced sound and I haven't felt the need to tone down the treble, like I did with the Marantz. The enveloping sound field of the Sony is truly an amazing experience with the right movie/music! Is it going to compete with much costlier units...no, but with the sale price plus scratch/dent discount I don't think I can find a better sounding unit. If I have one complaint it's with the remote, which needs line-of-sight and be fairly close to the unit to work.
Pros: Plenty of power for fairly efficient speakers Great sound field options Large sound stage
Cons: Remote needs work May not hear the finest details in music

Okay I would like to make this review twofold first starting with the receiver the an1000 is awesome if you are in the need for a 7 channel Atmos receiver I don't see how you could do any better than this. Especially for the price point in combination with everything you get and Sony special sauce AKA 360 spatial mapping. Set up was simple and direct with Sony's room correction working beautifully. Second part I bought this particular item from the outlet. I have been a customer of crutchfield for decades this would be the first item that I bought from the outlets and I have to say from this day forward I will always check the outlet. My particular item was listed as scratch and dent and literally after going over every piece and parts which there was no original part missing the only thing that I can find was one page of the owner's manual that got folded over. Cannot express how impressed I am with the entire experience. Thank you crutchfield
Pros: Room correction and simple setup. Phenomenal sound. easily integrates with old and new gear
Cons: No built-in phono preamp. No main room expansion

Not for my 8 ohm speakers
John from Florida on 5/22/2024
Here is why the One Star Review. Integrated it into my home theater system. I have five ceiling speakers (Niles DS7PR 8 ohm). Within thirty seconds the remote (RMT-AA511U) stopped working. It seems that this is a common problem. I was able to get a replacement remote (RMT-AA401U) that worked (sort of). After spending about two hours getting all the parameters entered I started listening. The problem was that at even moderate volume levels the Protection Circuit would kick in and the receiver would have to restart. On the box and in the instructions are prominently labeled warnings against using low impedenace speakers. These were 8 0hm so should not have been a problem. If the protection circuit continues to cut in the instructions state, "Unplug the AC power cord (mains lead) and let the receiver cool down for 30 minutes while performing the following troubleshooting: --Disconnect all of the speakers and subwoofer.--Check that the speaker wires are tightly twisted on both ends. --Connect the front speaker first, increase the volume level and operate the receiver for at least 30 minutes until it completely warms up. Then, connect each additional speaker one by one and test each additional speaker until you detect which speaker is causing the protection error." I redid all speaker connections and it still cut out. No Way! I went online and got a used Yamaha RXA880 as an identical replacement of the original receiver and it works great.
Pros: sounded nice
Cons: would not work with speakers that Yamaha RXA880 can play

Paired this receiver with a Sony XR-77A80J tv. Overall, the sound is pretty good (not as good as my previous Denon). I bought this with hopes of better integration with my TV. It seems Sony just isn't good at this. There is about a minute lag every time I turn on my TV before the receiver kicks in. When I change TV stations, there is a noticeable interference buzz/click. And, there is a random complete shut down of performance when powered on where sound and picture don't work. The only way to fix is by removing all cords from TV. Not sure if this is a tv or receiver issue, but it is hugely problematic and unacceptable. I would not recommend either Sony product as a result.

Chose Sony Based on Reviews and Rep
Reid from Gloversville, NY on 3/30/2024
I watch TV and movies and listen to music, occasionally at high volumes (enough to close the windows). I'm not a gamer. My speaker system is currently 2 front, 1 center and 1 subwoofer, but am eventually expanding to at least a 5.2.1 home theater system. I chose this unit based on the reviews and Crutchfield rep Hogan's advice. With a predetermined max budget , we pinned it down to 3 receivers. 2 were already on my list - this Sony and an Onkyo. A Yamaha was the added 3rd, but I'd just tried one (not from Crutchfield) and it died (no visual signal to TV) after 2 weeks. (Last November, my 4-year-old Denon developed issues, so I was gunshy of these 2 brands.) After talking with Hogan, I had more in-depth insight to further my research. What stood out consistently in the Sony reviews were good sound and easy set-up, which were my 2 top priorities. My TV is also a Sony Bravia and my old cd changer and center speaker are Sonys, too. Delivery was fast. To set up, I had to use the (4K) "Out 2" HDMI port on the back of the receiver instead of the (4K) eARC "Out 1" port. Then everything worked great and set-up was a breeze. (My TV's eARC port has never worked and have had to do a work-around using a different HDMI port.) Overall, I am very pleased with my new purchase. Crutchfield always offers superb products and excellent service.
Pros: Good sound at all volumes Easy set-up Confidence in Sony products
Cons: Small (but adequate) remote

A nice receiver, but with a few failings
Sarosh from Swedesboro, NJ on 3/23/2024
Overall a very nice receiver, but with a few maddening quirks. First, it takes quite a long time to do a cold boot (after all power to the unit has been cut). For some reason it seems to connect to the network and do something, all of which takes a long time before it is ready. I suppose Sony would say that one should only do a cold boot once and then leave the unit on standby thereafter - making this a moot point. Second, I fail to understand why the receiver has over eight inputs but allows only two presets - one for movies and the other for music. As I understand it, these allow you to specify a sound field (decoder) that is to be associated with the input - and no, you cannot add presets. Third, the equalizer is an equalizer in name only. It only allows you to boost or cut Bass and Treble. Sony does adjust other frequencies which they consider should be associated with Bass and Treble, but you cannot adjust individual frequencies as with a Yamaha. On the plus side, its user interface in the setup is a cut above what you would find on a Yamaha A2A. It's like working with a rather slick graphical interface, compared to a DOS character based interface on the Yamaha. Kudos to Sony. Overall, I would say that it is a very nice receiver, but the addition of a "real" equalizer and the ability to add presets with make it top class.

Edward from Monroe, NC on 3/17/2024
My Onkyo receiver died and needed to be replaced. I called Crutchfield for advice and this was their recommendation. The setup did require another call to Crutchfield which completed the setup. This Sony is connected to a Bose Acoustimas 10 and the output is amazing. The only thing that downgraded it from a 5 star is that it did not have a switched Powersource for the Bose. The moral to this story is that this is why I only purchase electronics from Crutchfield.
Pros: A great receiver
Cons: It needs a switched plug for attached devices.

Sony's co-founder would not be happy with this.
Mark from Elizabethtown, KY on 3/14/2024
1) Factory packaging is cheap, weak, and unable to protect the structural shape. 2) Included RMT-AA511U Remote will NOT control any other Sony component, nor is it backlit. 3) Using Blu-Ray via eARC, audio and video plays in/out of sync. 4) Bluetooth connection takes a short eternity; the Bluetooth connection button on the remote does not call it up on the display (has to be activated by a button on the front panel). 5) For 2.1 stereo users, you have to dive deep into the on-screen tv menu to set it up, otherwise, your stereo audio will be sans dialogue, playing only background audio and sound fx. 6) Main volume knob on the front panel is a hot mess, a cheap plastic cup glued to a metal post which provides no tactile or sensory feedback. 7) Sub-functions on the Main display are illegible at one (1) meter. 8) Subwoofer volume adjustment requires another deep dive into an on-screen TV menu. 9) It will drive efficient 8 Ohm speakers without strain. 10) The technical writer responsible for the Owners Manual should be fired--scant explanation for the necessary functions and their corresponding commands.
Pros: Works well with efficient 8 Ohm speakers.
Cons: Too many to list. A poorly executed product.

Got this for my garage receiver because I have one wall with 3 pairs of speakers and I use the Sony on the multi-level direct setting instead of home theatre and it makes a fabulous great sound....crisp highs and mid-range sounds out of my Klipsch speakers and really great bass! The reviews were right on about the Sony STR-AN1000. Much better than my old Yamaha. Total different sounds. My Crutchfield advisor was spot on.
Pros: Really crisp highs and mid-range sound much better than my more expensive Yamaha and Pioneer Elite receivers. Also, Crutchfield puts an extra box over the factor box on most of the products they ship....great idea!

Does the job nicely
Robert from Andover, CT on 1/10/2024
So was having some issues with sound decoding from a 20+ y/o Yamaha RX-V1300. It had served me admirably, but time marches on. Budget constraints dictate a reasonably priced, modern replacement. I investigated the typical suspects, Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo & Sony. Decided to go with Sony to match my Bravia TV and Blu-ray player and am glad I did. There's lots of new things to wrap my head around after 20 years, but here's my take. First off, understand that you'll need to have all HDMI cables, splitters and switches at an HDMI 2.1 version to work with eARC. That will allow you to eventually make use of Dolby Atmos. At this point, my cable box, ROKU and Blu-ray player will not pass any Dolby Atmos signals to the receiver. Luckily using the Sony STR-AN1000 in 5.1.2 mode still works great because the Atmos speakers I have can be used now for the Dolby Surround Upmixer which seems to be used quite a bit for a lot of content that is available to me on cable and ROKU. After performing Auto Calibration with D.C.A.C. IX, the results are just fantastic! The only thing I tweaked for my 5.1.2 set up was to raise the center channel DB level a little bit. Also tried a set up in what I had been using before (5.1) and it sounded much better than the Yamaha had ever sounded. I am very happy with this purchase, no regrets so far. P.S. The audio/video label tags provided free by Crutchfield are a nice and welcome touch!
Pros: Reasonably priced Easy setup with included microphone Very good channel separation Excellent onscreen menu Great sound!

Exceeded my expectations!
I was looking for an AVR that would solve a few challenges I've been facing with my older AVR: Clearer Dialog and Better Surround Sound. I already owned a Sony OLED X80j and was aware it had the built in Acoustic Screen sound. The AN1000 worked with this (much like the HT-9 and the newer Sony AVRs) for acoustic center sync and I was looking to try this out for crisper dialog. The dialog is definitely clearer and as the AN1000 sends the higher dialog frequencies to the X80J and still sends all other center sounds to my Klipsch center. Setting it up was pretty simple but you need to pick the speaker pattern and configuration that uses both your center and the TV center. I was also looking for surround sound mapping that would better utilize my front and rear speakers. The Sony Immersive 360 audio is no joke and delivered! My surround sounds better than ever and I'd say everything I've read about the sound mapping tech in this receiver and the HT-A9 are true. While I was interested in the HT-A9, I wanted an AVR so I could have 4K HDMI switching, and HDR 10 support. My old AVR had 4K switching but the picture is noticeably sharper going through this AVR. Everyone's situation is different but this receiver really is a great product and great value.
Pros: Immersive 360 Acoustic Center Sync (with certain Sony OLED TVs)
Cons: Nothing significant

Although I bought this mostly for movies, I am very impressed how well music sounds in 2 channel. If you are looking for a great budget receiver, you can't go wrong with the Sony STR-AN1000.
Pros: Great power Surround channel separation is impressive Very easy to set up
Cons: At this price, I can't think of any

Great sounding surround sound receiver with ample power and inputs. I like that it has eArc so you can send media back and forth f between a smart tv and the receiver. I stream with a smart tv and run surround sound audio through the receiver . I especially like the zone three analog output that lets you hook up to separate amplifier to run another system. I Have my zone three set up to send the audio to a vintage amp and custom pair of speakers.

Outstanding Value
Nikola from Addison, TX on 10/19/2023
The receiver represents my first foray into HiFi and Home Theater. I originally wanted to create a better version than the HT-A9 using Sony's 360 Spatial technology that received rave reviews and that this unit incorporates. Instead, I've gone on a full blown journey learning as much as possible about audio. This specific unit is a bargain, containing a lot of the same features as the premium ES line at a fraction of cost. Highly recommend.
Pros: 360 Spatial Sony Integration Value
Cons: No Pre-Amps, but to be expected at this price and from Sony. Dated design Did not come with steroids and blow

Audiobrute from Dayton, OH on 10/13/2023
A very competent receiver with most of the future proof issues met. Only drawback is a more flexible power output amplifier; Or at least pre-outs to work with in your future. As with most all newer technology, there's a learning curve to deal with, but Sony has done a good job of bringing this to you with the best help on this planet, Cruchfield! You' ll enjoy this one.....
Pros: You're going to have to dig deep to do better than this one in this price range
Cons: Be patient, there's a lot here...as an end result, this will leave you with a bigger smile than you would expect.

like it a lot
Cory from Parksley, VA on 9/7/2023
Crutchfield's tech named Bo helped me pick this receiver according to my needs. He was spot on perfect. It was exactly what I wanted and needed. Initial connections of all the wires were tedious as always, but the setup was easy, even for me. Sounds great, looks stylish, and easy to navigate the settings, if you read the manual. I will buy from Crutchfield again and trust their informed suggestions.
Pros: Good quality and easy setup
Cons: None yet

Enjoyable sound
Dennis from Fort Myers, FL on 7/22/2023
Like the sound on CD, USB, turntable, and Bluetooth, Have not done movie as of yet. Still having difficulty with some setup aspects and seems the receiver runs hotter than my older Yamaha AVR did. I do use an external Aircom fan to keep unit cooler as it sits inside a cabinet with rear and bottom ventilation.
Pros: Sound quality is exceptional
Cons: Runs hotter than I thought; setup is not as simple as some.

Compatibility is everything
John from Colorado Spgs, CO on 7/13/2023
This was the audio answer I was looking for. I own a Sony A80j TV and was looking to upgrade my audio to expand listening opportunities with movies, etc. Initially I purchased a different brand that had to be returned over unanticipated incompatibility issues. After chats with both Crutchfield's service and sales people we arranged and exchange for the STR-AN1000. All compatibility issues and quirky behaviors resolved instantly; set up simple and without conflict. Sound and performance is just what I expected it to be. Excellent sound quality across all available AV sources (streaming, broadcast, playback) without the need to constantly adjust the receiver. Kudo's to Sony's sound/room calibration process. It provided clear/clean listening in a very unconventionally shaped room setting whereas the returned product made for muddy sound configurations across all sources. The Sony STR-AN1000 was $300 more expensive at the time of the exchange but I was happy to pay it to get the quality and functionality I sought, then "BOOM" the Sony went on sale shortly afterward and Crutchfield honored their price guarantee and refunded the difference. Thanks, Crutchfield for being the quality company one can trust to do the best for their customers.
Pros: Seamless integration with Sony TV Set Up- easy Auto calibration a step above others Good quality, well made Supports my SVS speakers as well
Cons: Product display hard to read at 14' distance

Best receiver for a beginner
Crutchfield customer from Virginia Beach, VA on 6/6/2023
I just started my journey with surround sound systems and receivers. All I can says is that for a beginner this receiver makes everything very easy to understand. What sold me on this receiver vs the others is the Digital Cinema Auto Calibration IX, the 360 Spatial Sound Mapping that calibrate the sound to match your room plus Sony's reputation with music quality on receivers, it did not disappoint. My room set up is awkward and I don't have the experience to do manual calibrations. The calibrations work wonderfully. My 5.1 RSL speakers and sub sound amazing after the calibration. The remote line of sight 1st world problem is not as bad if you are close to the receiver but if you are far then you definitely have to point directly at it but I use my media box remote that is connected to the receiver and it works fine from everywhere. My family use it every day, almost 16 hours a day between music and movies and no overheating issues like some of the competition. There is way more stuff this can do but you have to play with it and learn as you go.
Pros: Easy to use for a beginner The calibration software Size and look
Cons: Remote control Audible clunk (amp start up) when turning on (normal).

Sony STR-AN1000
Guest from MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA on 5/23/2023
Great piece of equipment. I was unsure about a Sony AVR given their relative lack of participation in this product space but I was pleasantly surprised at both the sound quality and the multi-zone HDMI switching efficiency (something that my previous Pioneer Elite model was atrocious at). Only quibble is the Sony Music Center iPhone app is pretty bare bones (though it works reliably for what it purports to do).

I should have bought from Crutchfield or bought something else
Robin from Philadelphia, PA on 3/27/2023
Stupid me got impatient with how long it took for Crutchfield to stock this and bought it elsewhere, and I don't wind up with Crutchfield's tech support! First, Sony shipped it without an FM antenna. I called over 2 weeks ago. They said they would ship one, and they didn't. Second, it can't handle HI-RES audio streams where a long continuous piece of music is subdivided into tracks. I use Qobuz through the built-in Chromecast. For an act of an opera or a movement in a longer symphony, it pauses to load each track, something I've never seen elsewhere. This wrecks the listening experience. Since I purchased this for movies and music, I now have half what I wanted. I've spent a long time with Sony tech support. They now blame Qobuz. Sony slaps a HI-RES emblem on the front of the receiver. They shouldn't
