Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sony FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS (SEL400800G) is a super-telephoto zoom lens for Sony mirrorless cameras with the E-mount. This focal length makes the lens ideal for shooting birds and wildlife, sports, aircraft, and other far away subjects. It can be used with either full frame camera bodies or those with APS-C image sensors. The 2x zoom lens features Optical SteadyShot (OSS) that reduces blur caused by camera shake. Sony G lenses are designed and manufactured to the highest standards of optical performance, giving you superb clarity and sharpness at all focal lengths. The lens comes with a lens hood, a tripod mount, and a lens strap to prevent the lens from dropping.

Compatibility: The lens is designed for Sony α-series mirrorless cameras with the E-mount. On a full-range camera, the native focal length is 400-800mm. On a camera with an APS-C image sensor, the equivalent focal length is 1.5-times the lens native focal length (600-1200mm). The lens is also compatible with Sony's 1.4x (SEL14TC) and 2.0x (SEL20TC) teleconverters, providing focal ranges of 560-1120mm and 800-1600mm, respectively. The teleconverters retain superb image quality and AF performance.

Lens Construction: The SEL400800G has 27 elements in 19 groups, including six ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that suppress chromatic aberration and distortion. The lens features a moisture- and dust-resistant design, so you can confidently use the lens outdoors in challenging environments.

Internal Zoom: The lens' internal zoom mechanism means that the length of the lens does not change while zooming. This provides much more balance and minimal center-of-gravity shift for better handling.

Lens Coatings: The SEL400800G's front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and fingerprints from the surface. The coating makes it easier to wipe off any contaminants, keeping the lens clean.

Optical SteadyShot (OSS): The lens is equipped with Sony's Optical SteadyShot image stabilization technology. You can turn OSS on or off via the switch on the lens barrel. Shooting at long zoom ranges without a tripod makes it difficult to get blur-free shots. Optical SteadyShot compensates for camera shake common with handheld photography, giving you sharp, clear images. In addition, 5-axis Stabilization is available with compatible Sony α camera bodies. There are three OSS Modes to choose from:

  • Mode 1: compensates for normal camera shake
  • Mode 2: compensates for camera shake that occurs when panning moving subjects.
  • Mode 3: compensates for camera shake to minimize framing disturbances. Helps you keep up with fast and irregularly moving subjects (i.e. photographing sports or wildlife).
Note: You should turn off OSS when using a tripod.

11-blade Circular Aperture: The lens is equipped with an 11-blade circular aperture which provides smooth, natural bokeh, especially at super-telephoto focal lengths.

Focus Controls: The SEL400800G is equipped with the following focus controls:

  • Focus Mode Switch: The Focus Mode Switch lets you choose between Auto and Manual Focus modes. For AF photography, you should set both the camera and the lens to AF. For Manual Focus, you can have either the camera or the lens set to MF.
  • Full Time DMF: Full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) automatically switches to Manual Focus when the focus ring is operated, making it easy to make slight changes to the focus, even if you're in Autofocus. You can turn Full-time DMF on or off via the switch on the lens barrel.
  • Focus Hold: Three customizable Focus Hold buttons are provided at 90° increments on the lens barrel. When shooting in Auto Focus mode, pressing one of the Focus Hold buttons cancels the AF to fix the current focus, allowing you to take the shot. Releasing the button while pressing the shutter button halfway allows the lens to start Autofocusing again.
  • AF Range Switch: The lens is equipped with a 3-position focus-range limiter to help reduce the time it takes to auto focus. You can set the focus-range limiter switch to one of the following positions:
    • Full: lets you adjust the focus from the minimum focusing distance to infinity (∞).
    • 10m-Near: lets you adjust the focus from 32.8 feet (10m) to the minimum focusing distance.
    • Infinity (∞)-8m: lets you adjust the focus from 26.3 feet (8m) to infinity (∞).

Linear Motors: The lens utilizes two precision Linear Motors for blazing fast and accurate autofocusing, and to track moving subjects wherever they go. The motor operates in total silence which makes it ideal for recording videos. Its Linear Response MF changes the focus linearly in response to focus ring rotation. It provides intuitive focusing that is nearly equivalent to mechanical manual focusing.

Reduced Focus Breathing: Sony's advanced lens technology reduces focus breathing while shooting movies, as well as focus and axial shift when zooming. Focus breathing occurs when the angle of view changes according to the focusing distance during movie recording. Some cameras are equipped with a Breathing Compensation function that can be utilized when using this lens. This function can be found on the Alpha 1, Alpha 1 II, Alpha 9 M3, Alpha 7R V, Alpha 7S III, Alpha 7C R, Alpha 7C M2, Alpha 7 IV, Alpha 6700, Alpha ZV-E1, and Alpha ZV-E10 II cameras.

Tripod Mount: The lens comes with a non-removable tripod mount that provides much more balance and stability, compared to attaching the tripod to the camera's tripod receptacle. Loosening the locking knob on the tripod collar lets you change your shooting orientation from horizontal to vertical (or vice versa) by rotating the lens within the collar. Gray index markings are located at 90° intervals to help you precisely adjust the camera's position. The tripod collar's foot has both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 tripod threads, so no adapter is necessary.

Lens Hood: The lens comes with the ALC-SH181 lens hood which helps prevent lens flare, and protects the front lens element. It attaches via a bayonet-style mount, and locks into place when fully mounted. The hood has a sliding window that allows you to rotate an attached polarizing filter without having to remove the hood. When not in use, the hood can be stored by reverse-mounting it to the lens.
