Surround System Features

5.1Ch Surround System: The Sony HT-S60 surround sound system consists of a soundbar speaker, powered sub, and two rear speakers with wireless amplifier for up 5.1ch surround, plus support for Dolby Atmos & DTS:X. The powered subwoofer contains both amplifiers for the powered subwoofer and soundbar speaker. The powered subwoofer and soundbar connect together via a proprietary cable and are not wireless. The two rear speakers come with an external amplifier that communicates wirelessly with the powered subwoofer and connect to the rear speakers via proprietary speaker cables for rear-channel audio.

  • Soundbar Speaker: The soundbar speaker employs a 5-driver array that is powered by the built-in digital amplifier of the powered subwoofer. The 5-driver array consists of left & right front speaker channels and a dedicated center-channel speaker. Each left & right front channel has a soft-dome tweeter and race-track cone woofer, while the dedicated center-channel speaker features a full-range race-track cone driver. The left & right front channels of the soundbar deliver a wide stereo soundstage, while the dedicated center-channel speaker ensures crystal-clear voice reproduction.
  • Powered Sub: The powered sub houses a front-firing 7" subwoofer inside a bass reflex enclosure with front-firing port that is driven by a powerful built-in digital amplifier. It delivers deep, rich bass to your movie soundtracks. The powered sub also contains a second amplifier that powers the soundbar speaker. In addition, all the source inputs (HDMI eARC, Aux, Optical), are located on the powered subwoofer (not the soundbar).
  • Wireless Rear Amplifier & Speakers: The two rear speakers connect via proprietary speaker cables to the included external amplifier that communicates wirelessly to the powered subwoofer to distribute the rear audio channels. Each rear speaker employs a 2-way driver design with a soft-dome tweeter and race-track cone woofer that are powered the digital amplifier of the wireless rear amp.

Notes:

  • The soundbar and subwoofer are not wireless and must connect together via a proprietary cable.
  • The rear speakers must make a wired connection to the included amplifier that communicates wirelessly with the powered sub.

Virtual 3D Technologies: Utilizing Dolby Speaker Virtualizer in combination with Sony's Vertical Surround Engine & S-Force PRO Front Surround technologies, the HT-S60 creates 3D (three-dimensional) surround sound that comes from all around you so you can fully enjoy the thrill of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X movie soundtracks. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are object-based surround sound formats that create a 3D soundscape for a more immersive and enjoyable audio experience. Other compatible multichannel surround formats include Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-HDMA, DTS-ES and DTS 24/96.

  • Dolby Speaker Virtualizer: Dolby Speaker Virtualizer can be used with any content (from 2ch to 5.1ch soundtracks), while delivering virtual height & virtual surround processing based on psychoacoustics (not reflective surfaces).
  • S-Force Pro Front Surround: Using front speakers only, Sony’s unique digital sound field processing technology virtually reproduces the surround soundfield, with audio coming at you from both sides. You can enjoy rich, cinematic surround sound without cluttering your living space.
  • Vertical Surround Engine: Thanks to Sony's virtual surround technology, the soundbar can position sound in vertical space, so you can experience 3D audio without the need for up-firing drivers or in-ceiling speakers. As well as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the Vertical Surround Engine lends a more realistic, multi-dimensional sound to other surround formats too (including Dolby Digital & DTS).
  • Surround Upmixer: Sony's unique upmixer delivers rich surround sound even from stereo content. Its innovative algorithm extracts and redistributes individual audio objects to immerse you in 3D sound.

Note: You can also choose an All Channel Stereo mode, which provides stereo playback through the soundbar, sub, and rear speakers.

Dialog & Audio Enhancements: A variety of dialog and audio enhancements can be accessed from either the included remote control or the Sony Bravia Connect app (for Apple iOS and Android OS).

  • Voice Modes: With Voice mode, you'll be sure to hear every whisper and character nuance of the dialog compared to other sounds in the scene for a dynamic experience. Voice mode can be accomplished through the included remote or Sony Bravia Connect app.
  • Voice Zoom 3: If you have a compatible 2023-2025 Sony Bravia TV (including Bravia 9, Bravia 8/8 II, Bravia 7, Bravia 5, and A95L Series), Voice Zoom 3 offers additional fine-tuning of dialogue for improved comprehension. Voice Zoom 3 can be accomplished through the included remote or Sony Bravia Connect app.
  • DTS Dialog Control: The volume of dialog is automatically adjusted while watching a DTS:X movie for more enjoyable listening experience. DTS Dialog Control can only be accessed from the Sony Bravia Connect app.
  • DSEEE: When an original music source is compressed, it loses the high-frequency elements that give detail and richness to a track. Sony's Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) faithfully restores these to produce high-quality sound that is closer to the original recording. This features must be accessed through the Sony Bravia Connect app.

Volume & Level Settings: Volume & Level settings can be controlled from the included remote or Sony Bravia Connect app (for Apple iOS and Android OS)

  • Speaker Distance & Level: From the Sony Bravia Connect app, you can set the speaker distance from your listening position and the output level of each channel to obtain the best possible surround sound. A test tone can be activated to check the sound output level of each channel.
  • Volume Leveling: Volume Leveling automatically reduces volume changes caused by the input signal. This function is effective when the volume of a TV commercial is louder than that of the TV program. Volume Leveling can only accessed through the Sony Bravia Connect app.
  • Night Mode: Using Night mode, you can enjoy sound effects and hear the dialog clearly even at a low volume levels. Night mode is available from the included remote and the Sony Bravia Connect app.
  • Audio DRC: Audio DRC compresses the dynamic range (range between the loudest and quietest parts) of the audio signal to make it easier to hear softer sounds. Audio DRC must be accessed through the Sony Bravia Connect app.
  • AV Sync: AV Sync adjusts the delay between the picture and sound. Audio DRC can be accessed through the Sony Bravia Connect app.
Wired & Wireless Connectivity

HDMI eARC: The Sony HT-S60 is equipped with a single HDMI eARC/ARC jack on the back of the powered subwoofer. ARC (Audio Return Channel) and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) allows audio to be sent from your compatible TV to the surround sound system through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

  • eARC will support uncompressed audio formats like Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD), DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, DTS HD Master Audio, and 5.1/7.1ch PCM. *eARC is backward compatible with ARC.
  • ARC is limited to Dolby Atmos (Dolby Digital Plus), Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24 and 2ch PCM.

Notes:

  • Your TV will also need to support eARC or ARC for this feature to work. Many newer TVs will support eARC, while most older TVs only support ARC.
  • The soundbar's HDMI eARC/ARC jack supports audio transmission only; video transmission is not supported.

Optical Digital Input: In addition to HDMI eARC connectivity, the Sony HT-S60 features an optical (toslink) digital input on back of the powered sub for connection to your television. The optical digital input supports Dolby Digital (5.1ch), DTS (5.1ch), and PCM (2ch) audio signals.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of some flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Aux Input: The Sony HT-S60 is also outfitted with an analog audio input on back of the powered subwoofer. The analog audio input consists of a stereo 3.5mm minijack.

Bluetooth 5.3: The Sony HT-S60 features built-in Bluetooth 5.3 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) and secure simple pairing (SSP). The HT-S60 system can be setup to automatically turn on when connected to a to a Bluetooth source device. The system has a wireless Bluetooth range of 32.8'

  • Wireless Audio Streaming (A2DP): You can wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth-enabled source device (such as your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer) to the Sony soundbar speaker system. You'll continue to control your wirelessly streamed audio and view song/artist/album information from your Bluetooth source device. Supported Bluetooth audio codecs include SBC and AAC.
  • Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): The HT-S60 pairs wirelessly and effortlessly using the Sony Bravia Connect app (for Apple iOS and Android OS). Multiple Bluetooth-enabled devices (up to 9) can be paired, but only one device can be used for playback at a time. Once paired, the surround sound system will automatically re-connect to your source device when within range.

Note: The Sony HT-S60 is only a Bluetooth receiver and not a transmitter. It cannot transmit audio to other Bluetooth speakers and headphones.

USB Update Port: The USB-A port on the rear-panel of the powered sub is used for updating the system's software and firmware. When new software/firmware is available, a notification will appear on Sony Bravia Connect app (for Apple iOS and Android OS). You'll then go to the HT-S60's support page on Sony's website from your computer and download the update on a USB thumbdrive and insert that USB thumbdrive into the powered sub's USB-A port for update.

Mounting & Placement Options: The Sony HT-S60 offers flexible mounting options for its soundbar, powered sub, and rear speakers with wireless amplifier.

  • Soundbar: The soundbar speaker can simply be placed on a shelf or wall-mounted.. If you have a Sony Bravia XR TV with a multi-position stand (such as the Bravia 5, Bravia 7, Bravia 8/8 II Bravia 9, or A95L Series); you can change the position of the TV stand and fit the soundbar speaker discreetly beneath the television for a clean look. The soundbar also includes feet which allow the speaker to be raised 0.5" in order to fit over top of select Sony TVs (including Bravia 9, Bravia 8, Bravia 7, and Bravia 5); or other TVs with a footprint of 29.625" (w) x 0.375" (h).. The soundbar can also be wall-mounted using its integrated keyhole slots that are spaced 23.125" apart. Optional 3rd-party wall-mount brackets that support key-hole slots can also be used and sold separately
    • Dimensions Without Feet: 35.75" (w) x 2.5625" (h) x 3.875" (d)
    • Dimensions With Feet: 35.75" (w) x 3.0625" (h) x 3.875" (d)
  • Wireless Rear Amp & Speaker Mounting Options: The rear speakers can be mounted on a shelf, floor-stand (sold separately), or hung on the wall using the integrated key-hole slot on the back of each speaker. The wireless rear amplifier can simply be placed on a shelf or even wall-mounted using its integrated keyhole slots that are space 3.875" apart. The rear speakers can be located behind or to the side of your listening area. Make sure the rear speakers are located close enough to the wireless rear amplifier, so their attached 17' proprietary speaker cables can be connected to the wireless rear amp.
    • Rear Speaker Dimensions: 4.25" (w) x 8.5" (h) x 4.0" (d)
    • Wireless Amp Dimensions: 6.9375" (w) x 2.0625" (h) x 8.5625"
  • Subwoofer Placement & Mounting Options: The powered subwoofer will need to be positioned so it can be connected to the attached 10' cable on back of the soundbar speaker. Best practice is to position the powered sub to the left or right of the soundbar, along the same wall. Corner placement will provide the greatest bass output, but can also "muddy" the sound or make the subwoofer sound "boomy. Position the subwoofer at least 2" from the back and side wall to prevent bass distortion. The powered sub measures 10.875" (w) x 15.25" (h) x 16.625"

Note: Wall-mount screws are not included for the soundbar, rear speakers, or wireless rear amplifier.

Power Requirements: The powered sub and wireless rear amplifier each come with a detachable 5' AC power cord that will need to be plugged into an AC wall outlet or surge protector (sold separately - see Accessories Tab). The soundbar and wireless rear speakers will not require an AC power connection. However, the soundbar will need to be connected via a proprietary cable to the powered sub, while the rear speakers will connect via proprietary cables to the wireless amp.

Note: The HT-S60 surround sound system enters standby mode automatically when no controls are activated and no input signal is received for 20 minutes.
