About the AudioControl The Epicenter® Micro

Buck Pomerantz

Add bass to your aftermarket system's high-level source

Most factory radios dial down deep, low-hitting bass notes to protect flimsy factory speakers. The Epicenter Micro from AudioControl takes amplified speaker-level signals, converts them into the high-quality preamp signals your sub amp needs, and then adds the bass that's missing. Even when listening to traditionally bass-weak classical, jazz, folk, or Tejano music, you'll finally be able to hear all the good bass you've been missing.

How does it do it?

Sophisticated processing analyzes the incoming signal and synthesizes low-bass fundamental tones, increasing bass response tremendously. A single band ParaBASS® equalizer lets you fine-tune your subwoofer's tone. A selectable subsonic filter removes extreme low frequencies so your amps and subs will play more efficiently. The Epicenter Micro will also connect to any receiver with preamp outputs — its balanced inputs will reject noise from your car's electrical system for ultra-clean output.

Installation conveniences

The included ACR-4 dash-mount wired remote control allows you to adjust the level of your sub channel on the go. Load selection switches make OEM factory system integration easier, so The Epicenter Micro will work with almost any vehicle's sound system. Selectable turn-on modes include GTO™ Signal Sense (DC offset), audio sigal , or remote 12-volt input.

Features

Bass Restoration: Rather than simply turning up the bass, the patented bass restoration circuit takes a full range input signal and measures the upper harmonics of the bass frequency range to determine what frequencies have been lost through the recording process, streaming algorithms or other processes, then correctly restores the missing bass information. The two remote rotary knobs allow you to control how much bass is restored to the system and the output level. A full range signal is output from the Epicenter that can feed a full range amp, a subwoofer amp (with built-in crossover), an outboard crossover or DSP.

Bass Maximization: The Bass Maximization circuit allows The Epicenter to maximize the bass output of any system while restraining destructive bursts, which can damage speakers.

Controls:

  • ParaBASS: single band parametric equalizer for the bass output
    • Wide: width of the parametric band is adjustable
    • Sweep: center frequency continuously variable 27-63 Hz (45 Hz in the middle)
  • Load Select: set speaker level input load
    • 20Ω: typically used with factory systems that have no amplifier (base system)
    • 60Ω: typically used with factory systems having a separate amplifier (premium system)
    • 20 kΩ: used for all other applications
  • Balanced Inputs: a balanced differential input circuit cancels noise picked up in the input transmission line; jumpers inside the chassis can be changed to unbalanced if needed
  • Trigger Mode: set how the Epicenter is turned on
    • Remote: turns on with +12 volts on the remote in terminal
    • GTO: (Great Turn On) turns on with the factory amplifier
    • Audio: turns on when an audio signal is sensed at the input; speaker level or line level
  • Ground Isolation: 3-position switch for power supply ground; Ground, ISO, 200Ω; best setting is typically the default ISO (fully isolated), but if you have noise try the other settings
  • PFM Subsonic Filter:
    • On: removes frequencies below 20 Hz
    • Off: filter is bypassed, generally a bad idea, particularly with ported sub enclosures
  • Output Voltage: set the maximum output voltage to match downstream processor/amp(s); 5 volts, 7.5 volts, 10+ volts

Remote: The wired remote has two concentric knobs; the outer knob controls the bass restoration level and the center knob controls the overall output level (volume). The remote is designed to be dash mounted, within reach of the driver; it can be mounted under the dash with the supplied bracket, or the bracket can be removed and the knob and LED can be custom mounted through the dash.

Note: For the Epicenter Micro to work properly, the included wired remote control must remain connected.

Remote Dimensions:

  • Width: 1.2" (1.76" including mounting flange)
  • Height: 1"
  • Depth: 1.4" (2.5" including knob)

Connections:

  • Power Terminal Block: 4-pin Phoenix connector; can be removed to attach wiring; accommodates up to 12 gauge wire
    • Power: constant +12 volts; 18 gauge wire minimum and a 1-amp fuse recommended
    • Ground: chassis ground; 18 gauge wire minimum recommended
    • Remote In: used to turn the unit on; 18-22 gauge wire recommended
    • Remote Out: +12 volt output when the unit is on; used to turn other components on; works in all three trigger modes; 18-22 gauge wire recommended
  • Speaker Level input Terminal Block: 4-pin Phoenix connector, inputs for left and right speakers; can be removed to attach wiring; accommodates up to 12 gauge wire
  • Line input: stereo RCA jacks
    • Note: The speaker level or RCA inputs are used, not both.
  • Line output: stereo RCA jacks
  • Bass Level Control: RJ-14 jack for the included wired remote control

Q
Will this help with my bass roll off from a factory B&O system on a 2019 ford f150 raptor?

Can I run an epicenter after an lc2i pro? As I listen to Hispanic music.
aldo  May 15, 2023
A
Greetings Aldo, and thank you for your question. The Epicenter has bass restoration, but not Accubass. Accubass is the feature Audio Control has that corrects bass roll off. You can get that in their LC2i, LC2i Pro, and their LC7i, of course assuming you are running an aftermarket subwoofer and amp as well.

Q
Will I need a line out converter with my factory radio or do this act as a line out converter and bass restorer?
emanuell  Mar 03, 2023
1 answer
A
This AudioControl Epicenter will function as both, Emanuell. This unit in particular will provide excellent bass restoration, and even has a subsonic filter that removes frequencies below 20 Hz (especially recommended for ported boxes). This unit is a great choice for adding a powerful aftermarket sub to a factory radio Emanuell!

Q
Does the knob act as a bass knob and does it take the spot for the optional bass knobs some amps have? For example the Alpine A60?
juan  Aug 10, 2022

A
Greetings Juan, and thank you for your question. The remote knobs that come with the Epicenter act as the amount of bass restoration you want of need, as well as the volume of your bass. Essentiality it would do more than the average remote knob that would be connected right to an amp.

Q
I have an after market radio and 2 10 inch subs and factory speakers with an amp now I am going to replace all of my door speakers and tweets with aftermarket plus a 4 channel Amp would this product be great with the set up I have???
johnny  Jul 31, 2022

A
This is a great product only for your subwoofer amplifier. The Epicenter analyzes the incoming signal and synthesizes low-bass fundamental tones, increasing bass response tremendously. A single band ParaBASS® equalizer lets you fine-tune your subwoofer's tone. If you want something similar for your sub amplifier and your 4 channel amplifier, the AudioControl DQ-61 would be better for both amplifiers. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_161DQ61B/AudioControl-DQ-61-Black.html?tp=70736 . This still has bass restoration for your sub amp but also transforms your factory radio's output into a balanced, equalized, and time-aligned signal that'll get superior performance from your aftermarket amps and speakers-including the 4 channel amplifier for your mids and highs. Also, we might have a car specific interface similar to these for your vehicle. If you'd like to see what kind of options we have, give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 and we'll be happy to look into it!
