Exceptional CD player
Daniel from Reston, VA on 1/31/2025
I purchased this stainless-steel model because how it stands out compared to my other standard black audio equipment. I was very impressed how technology has improved from my much older CD player which finally stopped working. Was also greatly impressed about the sound stage, depth of field, and tonal accuracy. Impressed on dynamic range control from low end to high levels. My higher quality CD's had exceptional sound compared to normal recordings which is what I expected. Very happy with this purchase.

Michael from LAKEWOOD, CO on 12/13/2024
The sound and operation is fine. However, about once per week the machine stops playing in mid-disc. I have to restart the disc and skip ahead to where it stopped. There are software updates that might help this, but it requires a Windows computer. I have no Windows computer nor any access to one. I have contacted Rotel but have received no response. Disappointing and frustrating.

Larry from Grosse Pointe, MI on 10/27/2024
Great sound. Smoothly operating CD tray. Nice looking piece of equipment. But poorly designed remote (small inconveniently placed buttons) and somewhat cheap-looking blue-on-white LED panel. The lighted remote from my Rotel RSP-1576mkii operates the player but strangely lacks a button to open/close the CD tray.
Pros: Great sound and CD handling. Breathed new life into my CD collection.
Cons: Poorly designed remote. Bright blue-on-white LED that doesn't match other Rotel equipment.

Rotel CD14 MKII vs Rotel RCD-1572 MKII - Balanced inputs do matter!
Khoa from Pleasant Hill, CA on 8/24/2024
I bought both Rotel CD players, the CD14 MKII and the RCD-1572 MKII from Crutchfield. I am comparing them against each other to see if there is a difference in performance worth the difference in price. There is now a difference of $400 between the 2 CD models since the price of the RCD-1572 MKII just increased by $200. In terms of features, the only difference between the 2 models is that the RCD-1572 MKII has balanced XLR inputs whereas the CD14 MKII does not. They both have the Texas Instruments 32 bit/383 kHz DA converter chip, and RCA analog audio inputs and a coaxial digital input. They also both have the same remote control model. I set out to hook both of them to the same audio system, namely the Rotel RA-1572 integrated amplifier, a pair of Revel M20 speakers with Analysis Plus Oval 9 speaker cables, and Audio Quest Viper Balanced XLR and RCA analog interconnect cables, and Kimber Kable D60 coaxial digital cable. The volume was set at 58 on the Rotel amplifier. The sound on both models were warmer, livelier with a tight bass through the RCA analog inputs as compared to the D60 digital input. The soundstage for both types of inputs was narrow, remained between the speakers. By switching to the balanced XLR on the RCD-1572 MKII, the sound became louder, more lifelike with an expansive soundstage that expanded beyond the loudspeakers. But the bass was tighter with RCA inputs. So you have to ask yourself if a wider soundstage and livelier performance are worth $400.
Pros: Warm and lively presentation with RCA analog inputs. Tighter bass.
Cons: Narrow soundstage as compared to the presentation with balanced XLR inputs from the RCD-1572 MK II player. Too analytical and cool presentation through the digital coaxial audio input.

Rotel CD14 MKII
Crutchfield customer from STOUGHTON, MA on 7/24/2024
Purchased a Rotel A14 MK ll from Crutchfield a couple of years ago. When I first used it, I was disappointed and came close to sending it back. Then decided to give breaking in time a try by letting it run continuously for approximately 24 hours. Made all the difference in the world. Then recently my WONDERFUL Krell 300 cd player went down after 14 years. So, after doing my research, I decided to purchase the Rotel CD14 MKll. Now don't miss my Krell so much! It sounds equally as good as the Krell. However, as with the Rotel A14 MKll it needed break in time. The Rotel A14 4MKll & CD 14 MK11 is a terrific combination. Remember, break-in time is FOR REAL. Despite what those who disagree may say. Also, last but not least Crutchfield does an excellent Job in every respect!!

Great moderate-priced CD player - DOES play MP3s!
Erica from MINNEAPOLIS, MN on 7/16/2024
I've decided that I want to keep the physical CDs with my most important music, and shop the vintage stores for music new to me on used CDs. They are usually inexpensive, and almost always play well. So I wanted an upgraded "forever" player. The CD14 MKII is medium priced and of very high build quality. The sturdy-feeling mechanism always works silently and with deliberate precision, though it can be a little slow. The controls, program entry, and random functions work flawlessly. The sound I get from it, paired with the Rotel A12 MKII, is astonishingly rich and full. The CD14 MKII has played everything I've thrown at it with beauty and fine detail using the excellent onboard DAC. And NOTE TO THE COPYWRITERS at Crutchfield: This unit DOES TOO PLAY BURNED MP3 CDs!! (See display in photo.) In fact, it renders MP3 files better than anything else I have! I had no intention of making new MP3 discs for this player, but now I've added several to the old collections I used to play in the car I no longer have. These discs have new life! I stick one in, hit random play, and I have music for hours. Overall, my feeling after one month of enjoyable use is that my new CD14 MKII is excellent.
Pros: Silent, flawless mechanics and operation; superb sound quality for moderate price; IT DOES PLAY MP3 files
Cons: Can be a little slow to read a disc, not a big deal for me

Rotel CD14 MKII
Newton from Tucson, AZ on 2/16/2024
From the reviews I had high expectations. When my 15 year old CD player failed I wanted something that would provide a significant improvement. From the reviews of the CD14 MKII I had high expectations. What I hear is an astonishing level of detail in everything I have played. It resolves the low level background instruments and voices which can easily sound like "stuff", with nuances (e.g., acoustic guitars with fingers moving on the frets and plucking of the strings) and a more focused placement on the soundstage. Lots of detail without being "bright". And ... this was another excellent experience with Clutchfield.

Thomas from Naperville, IL on 2/14/2024
This is my first Rotel product and so far after 3 months of use I find it to be a very good unit. Depending on the CD played or recording the Rotel has a open sound. It is smoother in sound than my older CD players ( Yamaha,Nakamichi, McIntosh) which sound harsh in comparison. I go back and forth with the Marantz CD 6007 that I bought from Crutchfield a few years ago. The Marantz may sound warmer at times but the Rotel sounds great and the LED readout is easier to read. Gave the unit 4 stars because it lacks a headphone jack that I use occasionally.

James from Wheeling, WV on 12/22/2023
As advertised!! I've been reluctant to pony up for a mid-level, single disc cd player, but I have been slowly upgrading my stereo, so after much reviewing I decided to make the move. The one thing that really stands out to me is the sound stage, which may be in part due to the premium Texas Instruments 32-bit/384kHz digital to analog converter. The instruments seem to be placed all over the sound stage and isolated instead of coming straight at you as a whole. I recommend purchasing a better quality RCA connector. Crazy to spend this much money on a piece of stereo equipment, and run it through a very inexpensive RCA connector which comes with the cd player. If you are looking to upgrade, and have a reasonable budget to work with I highly recommend this player.

The first impression after listening to five favorite CD's in my collection is that it is an excellent player. It captured many of the subtleties of the various instruments, mostly jazz tunes. This is my third experience with Rotel components and I have always been satisfied. This particular CD player looks and feels like all the other units. This unit is replacing a CD 1520 which I had for about 15 years and finally started rejecting the CD's. I decided to replace it but I still have RA1520(int amp). The new player and the old amp seem to work well.
Pros: Great appearance and neatness. Nothing that might confuse the audience.

Rotel CD14 MKII
Guest from CLAREMONT, NH on 12/18/2023
This will be a very unscientific three-way review, as I just replaced all of the electronics in my two-channel stereo system at once and therefore am reluctant to review them individually with no reference. My beloved B&W CDM 7SE's are now being driven by the Rotlel RB 1552MKII power amp, Rotel RC 1572MKII preamp, and Rotel CD 14MKII CD player, replacing my very old Adcom GFA 5400 amp with Adcom preamp, and a newer NAD CD player. The sound upgrade was stunning from the start. The stereo imaging in my challenging environment is stronger, with more definition and depth. It is crisp and clear, increasingly warm and full of space as it breaks in, and the bass is really outstanding. It is fully present, crisp, solid and dense, but not at all exaggerated or boomy. You can almost feel the plucking or bowing of a string on a bass guitar or string bass. It's the best I've ever heard by far. As to the digital controls and such, I have little to say as I'm still getting used to the whole idea (I was a knobs and switches guy). But I will say I like the preamp's feature that makes settings changes (tone, bypass, balance) on the remote temporary, defaulting to the ones on the unit's control panel when turned off. I'll also say the CD player is slow as cold molasses to load, and, yes, those stupid lights, but never mind that, this is fantastic equipment that even features a simple, clean, and businesslike appearance. Well done, Rotel, and thank you as always, Crutchfield!

Hi Fi Touchdown
James from KANSAS CITY, MO on 12/9/2023
I bought the CD14 MK 11 to replace an old Arcam CD 73 from 2005 and was immediately impressed with the improved sound quality - particularly with the lower register that was perfectly balanced with the mid and upper ranges. Obviously I had missed out on at least 25% of sound reproduction for years. All of my cds had new life breathed into them but the very good recordings just sounded magical. Sadly the unit began to malfunction but I got a replacement unit that has been great so far. Crutchfield people were great to work with in the process. Red gave me solid advice and Paula was nothing but wonderful. Two weeks later I picked up a pair of Revel M106s and was amazed at the music coming forth. Powered with a Parasound New Classic 200 and using Morrow cables throughout. Vocals, strings, brass, piano, bass, and guitars are simply clear and beautiful with so much more clarity and nuances than I've ever heard at home. Pushing sound levels past polite puts me right into the high fidelity vortex I've been searching for all these years. Crutchfield is the best online company to do business with.
Pros: Great definition and expansion of sound from deep lows to good highs. Excellent product at this price.

I would give it 4 stars for the good sound, but due to some operational flaws I have to give it a subpar rating. The disc tray is very slow to load and eject, and it automatically closes after a short amount of time, which doesn't give you enough time to put a CD in when changing CD's. The buttons on the remote are to small for my fingers. Arcam has a better remote, with buttons that light up which is great if it is dark in the room. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.

The difference in sound quality and clarity was immediatley apparent. I realize it's somewhat unfair to compare this to a Yamaha S303 player but the upgrade to the ROTEL player was astonishing to me from day one. The structure and dynamics of the music seemed to have changed to a more intricate and precise listening standpoint for myself. My only complaint is the remote-half of the inputs are difficult to read and quite unnecessary. A great step up overall.

What's wrong?
Jimmy from Midland City, AL on 11/7/2023
O.K., I received my CD14 today. I hooked it up using premium SVS RCA connectors going to my integrated amp, a PS Audio Sprout 100 which I think has a ESS Sabre 9015 DAC. I have been streaming from Youtube via a SVS Optical Cable from the TV. The soud was unbelievable. Big, wide open, and deep sound stage. I started playing the CD14 and played it for about 4 hrs. The sound, terrible. No sound stage and no depth. I had better sound from my Sony 4k DVD player using it as a cd player. The difference is night and day from streaming to playing the CD14. Again, I'm using the RCA outputs and inputs. Would this make a difference? All I read and researched was the great DAC in the CD14. What am I doing wrong?
Pros:
Cons: Sound is gritty, no sound stage.

Enjoying CDs Again
James from Monterey on 10/15/2023
I'd been playing CDs on an OPPO 203 for several years, in either player or transport mode. Player mode with the sound filters sounded best, but I had gotten hesitant to load another CD because they just didn't sound good enough. The CD14 MKII changed that. I'm now enjoying CDs again. The CD14 brings out the detail in the music, and bass and soundstage are better than from LPs and streaming. Now I can listen to any of the three sources and enjoy. A better display and larger buttons on the remote would have been nice, but the sound quality overrides the bother for me. This player takes at least 50 hours to break in and smooth out.
Pros: CDs recorded good are entertaining and satisfying and I can listen for hours
Cons: This CD player will expose poorly recorded CDs, and too many are available (sold) that aren't worth having.

Money Well Spent
William from LANSDALE, PA on 8/27/2023
At TRIPLE the price, I would still be surprised by its level of performance. From being in the industry, I can state this: The most elusive thing in audio design, is combining extreme detail, treble extension AND warmth, into any product. Never experienced this from a CD player. Every voice and instrument is in its own space. The lightning quick attack of this unit, is not leaving anything behind. All combined with a "warmth" that makes the sound really appealing and addictive. The designer(s) of this product are obviously, of the highest caliber, in my professional opinion. To pull off this near-impossible feat. Ordered a second unit yesterday, and recommended it to a "cost-no-object" friend, whom will be ordering it from Crutchfield (of course) on Monday. "Mr. P" owns some of the worlds finest audio equipment, and was so pleased that I called to rave about this Rotel. Nice clean styling and decent build quality. At $1k, the latter is not close to Sony-ES products, of the 80's-90's, nor would I expect it to be. Those items would start at $5k or more today. Congratulations to the team at Rotel. Simply astounding!!!
Pros: Very astounding sound quality & price, along with clean styling.
Cons: A lighted remote would be a nice touch.

Outstanding player!
Steve from Nine Mile Falls, WA on 8/13/2023
Like others have stated here, I've had many CD players. Numerous Adcom models, including the GCD750, Marantz, Sony ,NAD, Oppo etc. I wasn't expecting to be surprised by the Rotel, but surprised I was! Right out of the box, I heard more detail, more channel separation, and a great soundstage. And it seems to get better every time I listen! I don't know how Rotel did it, maybe the Texas Instruments D/A chip? Anyway, very pleased with this unit. I don't think it takes too long to load either as some others have said..maybe 5 seconds or so. And as always, Crutchfield gets 10 out of 5 stars!
Pros: All the features I need and none I don't.
Cons: I have had it stop in the middle of a song maybe 3 times in a month..but when I restart the song it plays right thru. And I listen to music every day. I guess this is a known issue with this player, but it's so infrequent I don't have a problem. If there is an issue down the road, Rotel has a three year warranty.

Don't hesitate to buy
Henry from Efland, NC on 6/17/2023
Thanks to all the prior purchasers that reviewed this CD player and gave it what I feel is a fully justified 5 star rating. I was reluctant to spend the money when my old Magnavox CDB650 gave up the ghost, but the reviews here nudged me in the right direction. Speaking to Jared in customer service and getting my questions answered and some good advice sealed the deal. The player arrived quickly and in good condition. That evening my wife and I sat down to listen to a few tracks on our favorite cds. Several discs later, and after the umpteenth "I never heard that part before," I decided this Rotel is in fact a bargain. It is attractive, simple and extremely good at what it is supposed to do. If you would like the enjoyably disquieting experience of hearing your cds for the first time again, I recommend the Rotel CD14 mkII.
Pros: outstanding sound, elegant design, no distracting features, a remote control so large it cannot be lost in the sofa
Cons: a remote control so large it still cannot be lost in the sofa

You can actually the musicianship!
Kelvin from King George, VA on 5/12/2023
This CD player is everything that the positive reviews say it is. The detail mind blowing, the soundstage seems to perfectly match what the sound engineer was shooting for. And the sound, no matter the genre you are listening to, is warm and rich. Allow me to try to go beyond that. This Rotel CD 14 Mark VII reproduces the character and timbre of each drum, how it is tuned, how hard the drummer is using the drumsticks, and yeah the that goes for the Doobie Brothers, goes for Soundgarden, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Taylor Swift. You can hear the differences between multiple acoustic guitars on the same track, you can tell the make and model of each electric guitar. The way things are miked is now clearly audible. While I love Joni Michell's music, her recordings sound to me as if the life was squeezed out of them. I played the Court and Spark album. It was vibrant, clear, and her vocal performances sounded stunning. The placement of each instrument was precise, and you could the hear the sound effects on everything. What do you get when you buy this CD player? Master craftsmanship. And the opportunity to experience not only music. You get to experience the musicianship! You cannot ask for more than that.
Pros: Precision. Perfect soundstage and stereo separation, rich and warm.
Cons: It seems to have a little difficulty with home made CDs. Sometimes they do not load, and when they do, they skip or freeze up.

The tray and transport are smooth and quieter than previous players I had. The controls are basic and intuitive and it has a nice, clean appearance. I can't compare the performance of the DAC to anything else, but again I am not disappointed. The playback is as clean and nuanced as I was hoping for. For reference, I paired this with a new Willsenton R8 vacuum tube amp. If you're looking for a good performing player without totally breaking the bank, I would definitely recommend checking this one out.

Rotel CD14 MKII
Stephen from Grand Haven, MI on 2/11/2023
I have had a few CD players in my time, because I have always enjoyed the format and I still do. There has been nothing as substantial as this Rotel. The clarity of sound and the design and construction of the player are marvelous. I find nothing Negative about this unit. Rotel and Crutchfield are first class. Thank you both!
Pros: Sound and design

Everything they say is true!
Paul from BRIDGETON, MO on 1/9/2023
A Christmas present for myself, and why not! It's been two weeks and I definitely can tell the difference between my older multi-disc cd player and the Rotel. I now have a much better appreciation of what CD's deliver musically. Paired with my integrated tube amp and my vintage ADS speakers the sound is at higher quality than I could imagine. I meticulously went over all the Crutchfield purchaser reviews of the different Rotel CD players and decided to go with the CD14 MKII. All I can say is as of this date, all it extremely well. One Happy Customer.
Pros: Simple features for a solid player with a super DAC.
Cons: If I find one, I will update my review. Until then it's happy listening.

Great CD Player
Jeffrey from Virginia Beach, VA on 12/28/2022
I've had the CD14 MKII for about two weeks now, so I doubt its completely broken in. But my initial impression is that this is a first-rate unit. The reviews that were posted previously seem to hold true: the cd drawer operates smoothly; the sound quality is rich yet still detailed; and the build quality appears to be first-rate. At the moment, I am using the built-in DAC and the analog outputs. Sound very good to me.
Pros: Sound is great. High build quality.
Cons: None found yet.

Perfect balance of clarity, musicality and dynamics.
James from Sumter, SC on 12/9/2022
What a fantastic CD player this is. I've been listening to CDs since they were invented, and this is by far the best I've ever heard my extensive collection sound. To my ears, this beats all the CD players I've owned by Yamaha, Marantz, Emotiva and, of course, Pioneer and Sony. If you're serious about CDs, give this one a try.
Pros: Sounds great and supports gapless playback.
Cons: The remote is a little lacking in that it's not really user friendly due to buttons being sized the same, but that's a minor gripe.

Absolutely fantastic CD player
Dale from NEWARK, DE on 11/11/2022
This CD player will amaze you. I'm hearing parts, harmonies, details, and instruments on CDs that I thought I already knew really well. I've owned other pretty good CD players -- Adcom, OPPO, Sony, and Yamaha. But this Rotel model blows them away. If you have a decent amp, quality speakers, and a good sub, pop in some Paul Simon, Marcus Miller, Steely Dan, Thomas Dolby, or Van Morrison and ENJOY!

I wasn't sure if I did the thing, this is an expensive purchase. The difference in this CD player and my old one is phenomenal. I'm very impressed. The clarity and clear playback are a revelation. I'm a big fan now

My endgame CD player
Tim from Macon, GA on 9/4/2022
I'm one of those luddites who simply enjoy physical media. I had an entry level Yamaha CD player and, while adequate, was not capable of retrieving the detail I was seeking. The CD-14 MkII is exactly what I was looking for and, for me, is my end-game player. I highly recommend this player! Crutchfield customer service was, as usual, stellar!

Fantastic
Andy from Redmond, WA on 8/18/2022
The sound quality is impressive. The internal DAC brings out layers in songs that I'd never heard before. Doing an A-B comparison of the same songs on FLAC through other DACs, the CD14 MKII just has a much richer, fuller presentation, both in soundstage and instrument quality. Everything about the unit feels solidly built, from the drive to the RCA jacks. The LCD screen...well, it's nothing special; maybe a little dated, but it is legible from a good distance.

Completely pleased!
Jeff from Wheaton, IL on 7/24/2022
After considering several CD players, I opted for the higher-end Rotel CD14MK11 due entirely to the reviews by both Crutchfield and actual users. I was very impressed with the dedication by Rotel to improve all of the internals to deliver nothing but pure listening enjoyment. As of this review, I've only had the CD player for a few days, so its not burned in yet. However, my first impression is that this CD player is remarkable! The sound quality is absolutely pure. Smooth tray and superb separation. No matter what type of receiver or amp system you're using, please note that higher quality speaker cables will really help deliver what this product is capable of Now, regarding my experience with Crutchfield, they are an incredible business to do business with. Got questions before pulling the trigger? Their customer assistants are well-trained and knowledgeable about their products. They'll give you honest answers and won't pressure you to upgrade in any way. Additionally, they have a very generous return policy. Bottom line..Great product selection; excellent customer service and fast delivery.
Pros: Superb sound quality High-end internal components Solid chassis Sleek professional look
Cons: No cons

Lots of clarity and detail.
David from Santa Clara, CA on 7/20/2022
I'm very impressed with this unit, I upgraded from the Tribute Rotel player, there are some noticeable improvements in detail and clarity with the Mk11, although the Tribute is also very good indeed. I'm running a Yamaha s801 with JBL L100s (vintage), I love the sound of acoustic guitars with this arrangement, as well as the delicacy and control of bass & midrange in classical music. The upper frequencies are very smooth too. I'm not crazy about the control buttons, I bought the black unit, I find the buttons a bit hard to see unless there's a lot of light, perhaps it's not a problem with the silver version. The layout of the buttons seems a bit at odds with how tape recorder buttons were arranged, perhaps I'm too old school - anyway there's a remote control you can use, getting a bit nit-picky.
Pros: Great sound, well built machine
Cons: CD controls are bit fiddly.

David from Litchfield Park, AZ on 4/12/2022
Rotel has always been a quality product. The CD14 MK 11 is no exception. Simplistic styling mixed with a clarity you would find in a much higher priced unit makes it a must for any audiophile.
Pros: Styling and Clarity.

Rotel CD14 MKII
Edward from Mount Pleasant, SC on 3/21/2022
Delivered in a double box system for protection, shrink-wraped to keep water out--Impressive! Opened box, CD14 MKII is weighty, feels sturdy. Quick and easy hook-up conectivity. I immediately played several CD's--some over 40 years old!! The MK II played them all with no issues; Some had very heavy scratches--no skips!! The sound is astonishing! Soundstage played impeccable through my Yamaha AS-1200 and Klipsch KG5.2 speakers! Zero hiss, zero hum & aero outside noise!! I'm simply the happiest person right now.
Pros: Hefty, weighty, quick hookup, soundstage is imeccable, plays through the toughest CD's, FUN! Quick and protected shipping!
Cons: Could be cost-prohibitive for some.

Great unit
Joe from Fort Worth, TX on 3/16/2022
The unit was very easy to install and sounds awesome the only negative I have is that when the unit reaches the end of the CD it repeats the last song over and over again.
Pros: Easy installation
Cons: Keeps repeating last song at end of CD

The Sweet Spot For CD Players
Armand from Albuquerque, NM on 3/6/2022
I purchased this CD player after using a Rotel RCD-02, which is a 2002 model, for nearly 20 years. The RCD-02 is a great CD player but the CD14 MkII improves on it in just about all respects. The sound from the CD14 MkII is noticeably cleaner than its predecessor and the glare that was present with the RCD-02 with some discs is gone. The CD14 MkII retains the same great soundstage, imaging, and sense of space of its predecessor. Bass is also better than on the RCD-02, which could be a little lightweight in this area. The price may seem like a lot for a CD player but I believe this player is the sweet spot. In other words, it is at the point of diminishing return where you will have to spend a lot more money to get something significantly better. The RCD-02 cost around $500 in 2002. The CD14 MkII would only be about $100 more after inflation is taken into account. One other thing that was interesting is that the box the CD14 MkII came in was identical in dimensions and appearance to the one the RCD-02 came in 20 years ago. I find this degree of continuity to be comforting in a world that values change for the sake of change. Buy this CD player! It may be the last CD player you will need or want.
Pros: Clean grain-free, glare-free sound Great soundstage and imaging Great sense of air and space Very good bass Neutral tonal balance
Cons: None at this price
