Innovative Class D amplifier technology

This amp pushes Class D amplification performance to new limits thanks to HybridDigital Purifi Eigentakt™ technology. It helps the amp maintain even frequency response into lower impedance loads and minimizes the occurrence of digital clipping. This advanced design offers robust power output and accurate sound with minimal distortion, without the excess weight and cost associated with more traditional linear power supplies and Class AB output stages.

Convenient connections

The M28 offers individual unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR inputs for each channel, for making solid connections to a home theater preamp/processor like the NAD Master Series M17 V2i. There's 12-volt trigger input for remote turn-on, so your whole system can power up with a single click.

Features

Seven Channel Power Amplifier: The NAD Master Series M28 seven channel power amplifier can effortlessly create a truly realistic surround sound experience when mated to NAD's M17 V2i Surround Sound Preamp Processor (sold separately). Rated at 200W continuous power per channel, the M28 will provide over 340W dynamic power per channel with all channels driven into 8-ohms. The NAD M28 will pump out all the power you need into difficult loads (down to 4-ohm) to follow the complex dynamic peaks in your movies and music. The M28 has power reserves to meet the demands of the latest high-resolution digital movie and music soundtracks. The sonic character of the M28 only reinforces the story told by the numbers. The M28 is an amazingly powerful and transparent amplifier that delivers a new level of refinement, sonic character, and dynamics.

  • Continuous Power Rating: @ 20-20k with all channels driven
    • 8-Ohm: 200 watts
    • 4-Ohm: 340 watts
  • Dynamic Power Rating: @ 1kHz with one channel driven
    • 8-Ohm: 280 watts
    • 4-Ohm: 560 watts

Note: There is no bridged mode.

Purifi Hybird Digital Amplification: The Masters Series M28 uses Eigentakt amplifier technology, manufactured by NAD in license from Purifi. This new technology adds another level of precision by taking into account previously unknown effects of the output filter in the feedback loop and further refinement of the self-oscillating Class D technology as used by previous NAD Hybrid Digital designs. The result is a performance level that approaches the theoretical limit in measured performance, be it at whispering levels or at full power.

  • Low-Impedance: In common with the previous generations of NAD Hybrid Digital technology, but unlike most class D amplifier designs, the M28 is impervious to the loudspeaker load it is presented with, maintaining the same wide and even bandwidth response regardless of the speaker's impedance and at the same time providing high current capability. The continuous 200W into 8 ohms on tap for all channels driven at the same time and 560W dynamic power into 4 ohms is testament to this.
  • Stable Design: Inherent to the Eigentak technology is its very analog-like behaviour in the unlikely event the amplifier is driven into clipping. Whereas many class D designs can become unstable, Eigentakt behaves in a way similar to the benign way of clipping with instant recovery of well executed traditional class A/B amplifiers.

Balanced & Unbalanced Inputs: The NAD Master Series M28 can accept both balanced (XLR) and single-ended (RCA) inputs. It features seven XLR inputs and seven RCA inputs. Balanced XLR connectivity is the same efficient audio interface used by studios to provide the highest level of signal integrity with the lowest noise floor. The Balanced XLR inputs allow long cable runs without noise pickup or signal loss; all you get is awesome sound without the possibility of noise pickup or interference.

Note: You can only make one type of connection (XLR or RCA) per input channel. There is a switch for each channel that allows you to choose between XLR or RCA.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Maste Series M28 power amplifier features high-quality, gold-plated, color-coded binding posts for speaker connection. These heavy-duty binding posts will accept bare wire (16-10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The gold-plated terminals provide optimum sound transmission and excellent resistance to corrosion. Only connect loudspeakers rated 8-ohm to 4-ohm.

12V Trigger In: The +12V Trigger input (3.5mm) allows the M28 to be switched remotely from standby mode to "On" and vice-versa by connected preamplifier, AV processor, etc. The controlling device must be equipped with a 12V trigger output (3.5mm) to use this feature.

Detachable AC Power Cord: The NAD Master Series M28 comes with a 68" detachable IEC 3-prong AC power cord that will need to be plugged into an AC power outlet, surge protector, or line conditioner.

Protect Mode: The NAD M28 will enter protect mode if it senses a short circuit or excessive heat build-up. The amplifier's front-mounted protection lights will turn on if the unit goes into protect. If the M28 goes into protect, you should immediately press the standby button, turn of the power switch, and unplug the AC power cord.

Q
6 ohm rating? Trying to match an amp to a Martin Logan speaker set that ranges from 4 to 6 ohms
adam  Dec 31, 2022

A
That is a great question, Adam. We reached out to NAD to try and confirm this but were unable to sadly, potentially due to a Holiday break. I wanted to reply to avoid any long delay in answering. We can most likely use a 270 watt estimate at 6-ohms for pairing correctly with 6-ohm speakers. I hope this helps!

Q
What is the power consumption of the NAD M28 when in use?
matthew  May 05, 2022

A
Do you mean at standby? That is less than .5 watt. In use depends on loudness etc

Q
Can this run with ease 6 power speakers cornwall iv,forte iv and klipsch rf-7111.If so waht preamp would be a good match?

I misspoke about the efficiency of your speakers. they are very efficient and should be easy to drive to high volume. If one watt is spl 100, 10 watt would be 110 spl, 100 watt would be 120 spl and 200 watt 123 spl. That is very loud.
kerry  Dec 10, 2021

You have some nice speakers. Yes I believe the Nad will be able to push your speakers well even though they are not very efficient. I have Revel speakers across the front and four Definitive Tech speakers in the rear. The amp has never gotten hot. The amp will take balanced XLR connectors or Single ended connectors. Most preamps have at least seven preamp level channels out. You may want a preamp with phono inputs and also two balanced XLR inputs for just stereo listing. I am using the Nad M 17v2 but it does not have the XLr inputs. All inputs are single ended and no phono inputs. The output on the NAD preamp are XLR or single ended. The Nad preamp four atmos out puts are mini XLR but the unit comes with four mini XLR to XLR adapters.

I don't know the specifics of the speakers you mention. This amp easily drives my Polk LSIM series in a 7.1 configuration. Preamp duties are being done with the NAD M17, which is a natural fit.

Can i connect this amp to marantz 1250 integrated amp it has preout is vintage though?

Yes, but the M28 is a seven-channel amplifier; what do you intend to do with the other five channels? Do you mean the M22 stereo amp? The M28 uses the Purifi Eigentakt class D amp modules while the M22 uses the Hypex Ncore class D amp modules. Both the Eigentakt and the Ncore were designed by Bruno Putzeys.
edward t  Jun 26, 2021

If it has preout, you should be able to connect it. But why would you connect to a 7 channel amp when you only need two?

Q
why purchase this device over the Outlaw 7220 which is a lot less expensive with similar specs?
ronald  Dec 02, 2020

A
Outlaw has long made good amps at a good price. This amp 7220 is no exception. The amp has a 20 amp connector on the back so you may require a separate circuit just for the amp and 12 gauge wire in the wall. The a/b design does produce heat thus the 2 large fans in the 7220. Fans do add noise. At large volume the music will cover the fan noise and Outlaw has attempted to keep the fan noise down. Fan noise is not a good thing and the heat has to go some where after the fans blow the heat from the amp. There should be lots of open air around the amp. maybe even a separate amp stand for the 7220. The perfect amp the power doubles as the load haves. 8 ohm 220 w would go to 440 w into 4 ohm. The 7220 goes to 330 w. That is Ok but not great. The power supply for 7 channels would be huge to be liner but the 7220 can still can drive a 4 ohm load.

I had never heard of that AMP but I googled it and it is a class AB amp. Those are typically space heaters. They will heat up your room. The NAD on the other hand uses Eigentakt class D modules which have the lowest signal to noise ratio on the planet and were designed by the genius Bruno Putzeys. That would be my initial reaction without knowing much about the 7200 besides the basic specs.

I don't have an answer for you. I know my amp gets a 98 on audio science review. This is in the blue rating which is the very best Amps. ASR has reviewed the outlaw 2200 which gets a good rating of 85 in the green. But I did not see a rating of the 7200. Go with what you can afford. I am more than happy with what I have. Since it is almost impossible to compare amps, Pick what you like.
