Bowers & Wilkins 702 S2 tweeter housing

The innovative top-mounted housing for the 702 S2 tweeter is milled from a solid block of aluminum that resists unwanted resonance.

Proprietary drivers

This speaker looks different because it was designed to sound different. Bowers & Wilkins has spent decades creating and honing technology that gives their speakers a unique and beautiful "voice."

The 1" Decoupled Carbon Dome™ tweeter was purpose-built for the 700 Series to bring studio-quality sound to your home system. The top-mounted solid-body housing — borrowed from the 800 Series — is milled from a solid block of aluminum to form a structure that resists unwanted resonance.

The decoupled 6" Continuum™ cone FST™ midrange also benefits from tech developed for the high-end 800 Series. The cone's composite construction delivers precise vocals and instruments and smooths transitions.

The speaker's three 6-1/2" Aerofoil™ Profile bass cones are computer-modeled to provide the stiffness and rigidity required for deep, musical bass.

Flowport™ for better bass

The bass cones are aided by Bowers & Wilkins' Flowport technology. The 702's bass reflex enclosure features a rear-firing, dimpled and flared port that provides natural bass response without the turbulent "chuffing" that standard ports can create. The speaker includes a two-piece foam plug that can be inserted if you want to adjust bass response to your liking.

Build a complete Bowers & Wilkins system

The 702 S2 is voice-matched to other speakers in the 700 Series, so you can build a seamless surround sound system.

Product Research

Features

1" Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top Decoupled Carbon Dome: The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S2 floorstanding loudspeaker houses a 1" Carbon Dome tweeter that utilizes a Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top design for uncompromising high performance sound that will reveal subtle nuances that you've never heard in your music before.

  • 1" Decoupled Carbon Dome Tweeter: The 1" Decoupled Carbon Dome tweeter is purpose-built for the 700 Series and delivers a dramatic improvement on B&W's aluminum double dome tweeter (found in the 600 Series) by raising the breakup threshold to 47kHz, for pinpoint imaging accuracy and detail. The tweeter is decoupled from the mounting assembly and hardware using synthetic gel to prevent any unwanted vibrations from reaching the tweeter. The result is breathtaking clarity and definition.
  • Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top Design: The Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top design is borrowed from B&W 800 Series Diamond and helps the speaker convey uncanny realism, presence and transparency. Milled from a solid block of aluminum, the solid body tweeter housing design creates an acoustically optimized enclosure for the tweeter that is exceptionally inert and resistant to resonance. The result is a more natural, spacious, and open sound.

Note: There is some "play" in the tweeter housing mounted on top of the bookshelf loudspeaker enclosure. This is normal and specifically designed this way to prevent unwanted vibration between the tweeter housing and speaker enclosure.

6" Continuum Cone FST Midrange Driver: The 702 S2 floorstanding loudspeaker features a single 6" Continuum cone FST midrange driver, borrowed from B&W's 800 Series Diamond. Thanks to its woven-coated material and composite construction, the Continuum cone provides a natural and open sound by avoiding the abrupt transitions in behavior that can impair the performance of a conventional drive unit and cause distortion. As a result, voice and instruments are delivered with purity and precision. The midrange driver in this loudspeaker also utilizes FST (fixed suspension transducer) technology to reduce cone distortion, incorporates a decoupled design to prevent cabinet coloration, and features a new FEA-optimised aluminium chassis to reduce vibration - all resulting in improved midrange clarity.

Triple 6.5" Aerofoil Profile Cone Bass Woofers: The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S2 floorstanding loudspeaker houses three 6.5" Aerofoil Profile cone bass woofers. Developed using advanced computer modeling techniques, the Aerofoil Profile cone design (adapted from B&W's 800 Series Diamond) has variable thickness, providing stiffness and rigidity where it's needed most for deep, dynamic, and accurate bass response.

Flowport Technology: The B&W 702 S2 floorstanding speaker utilizes Flowport Technology to create smooth, deep, and efficient bass response. Its bass reflex enclosure features a rear-firing, dimpled flared port that provides natural bass response without turbulent noise or distortion. If you want to reduce the volume of bass without moving the speaker further from the wall, fit the included foam plug into the rear-firing port for lesser bass response.

Note: You can adjust the floorstanding speaker's low-frequency performance using the supplied foam plug. The foam plug is two-pieces, allowing for a degree of fine-tuning using either the outer, larger-diameter piece in isolation or the two parts together. Using solely the outer, larger-diameter foam piece will deliver less bass attenuation than the complete foam plug assembly.

Acoustically Transparent Magnetic Grille: The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S2 floorstanding loudspeaker comes with an acoustically transparent magnetic grille that's easy to install, looks great, and doesn't get in the way of the sound.

Dual Binding Post Terminals: The floorstanding speaker has two sets of heavy-duty binding posts connected by jumper straps. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, or banana plugs (single only). There are plastic inserts that will need to be removed from the binding post terminals in order to use banana plugs. Using the dual binding posts terminals, you can choose to bi-amp or bi-wire the speaker (when facing the back of the cabinet - the left set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the right set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier.
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.

Note: Make sure the jumper straps between the dual binding post terminals are removed when making a bi-amp or bi-wire type of connection.

Rubber or Spike Feet: The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S2 floorstanding loudspeaker comes with a plinth (base), rubber feet, and spikes. The plinth (base) secures to the bottom of the speaker cabinet using the supplied hardware. The rubber or spike feet screw into the bottom of the plinth (base). Use the rubber feet for hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl flooring. Use the spike feet for carpet flooring.

  • Dimensions with Rubber Feet: 14.4375" (w) x 43.5", (h) x 17.8125" (d)
  • Dimensions with Spike Feet: 14.4375" (w) x 44.375" (h) x 17.8125" (d)

Note: The 704S 2 floorstanding loudspeaker should always be used with the plinth (base) and feet installed for optimum performance and proper stability.

Applications: The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S2 floorstanding is a great choice for 2ch stereo music applications, as well as multichannel home theater setups.

  • Stereo Music: The floorstanding speakers should be positioned between 4.9375' and 9.875' apart at two corners of an equilateral triangle completed by the listening area at the third corner. The speakers should be approximately 1.625' away from the back wall, and at least 1.625' away from any side walls.
  • Home Theater: If the floorstanding speakers are to be used for the front channels in a home theater system, position the speakers within approximately 1.625' of the sides of the TV screen to keep the sound image in scale with the visual image. The speakers should ideally be at least 1.625' away from any side walls.

Note: Moving the speaker further from the walls will generally reduce the volume of bass. Space behind the speakers will also help to create an aural impression of depth. Conversely, moving the speakers closer to the walls will increase the volume of bass.

Bowers & Wilkins 700 Series: The Bowers & Wilkins 700 Series consists of three floorstanding loudspeakers (704 / 703 / 702), three bookshelf loudspeakers (707 / 706 / 705), two center-channel loudspeakers (HTM72 / HTM71), and two powered subwoofers (DB4S / DB3D). The 700 Series by Bowers & Wilkins brings your movie and music soundtracks to life with dynamics and details you've never heard before.

Q
Which is a better amp for B&W 702 S2, Rotel RA-1592 MKII or Yamaha MX-A5200 Bridge on 2 channel ?
rommel  Nov 12, 2021
7 answers
A
Rommel, I am happy with the Rotel RA-1592 MKII. I am using it with B&W CM9's and sub-woofer which are about 12 years old.
richard  Nov 17, 2021
A
The Rotel RA-1592 is a nice integrated amplifier with two speaker channels at 200watts each. It can connect via RCA cables to only one other amplifier via RCA output. It will not function as a fully integrated home theater system as the Yamaha system. If you looking for home theater Yamaha is the way to go.

I am powering mine with a Marantz 2275 and they sound amazing. Good luck with your decision. You will love the B&Ws
patrick  Nov 12, 2021

Very different machines. The Yamaha is an 11-channel amplifier that will require a pre-amp and the Rotel is a 2-channel integrated amplifier that doesn't need or even work well with a pre-amp. In my system, I have a pre-amp and both this Yamaha amp for home theater and a Rotel amplifier for 2-channel music listening.
darin  Nov 12, 2021

Rotel!

I have my B&W (805-D4) stand-mounted speakers paired with a Rotel RB-1590 2-channel amp and love it. Rotel is a sister company of B&W.
darin  Nov 12, 2021

Hi! I have Yamaha MX C5200 pre amp, after months of debates upon Rotel or Anthem, I decided on separate Yamaha Mc A5200, and I am very happy with it , if I went with Rotel, I had to change Pre amp to Rotel, Which has negative reviews, with Yamaha I new next : will be work horse, reliable and deliver plush, clear sound, had a bit hesitation about 150 W 2 channel driven, but no all channels ( I have 5.2 set up) deliver plenty of power, set up is amazing, YAPIO adjustment is great , I bypass EQ, so Yamaha for me , ask if you have more questions, not sure about bridging. what for in my case ? .

Q
How would the B&W 702 S2 speaker pare with a Marantz PM6007 Stereo 90W Integrated Amplifier?
claire  Feb 16, 2021
1 answer
A
I am not familiar with the Marantz PM6007 Amp. I have the 250 watts Marantz 4400 Quadradial (4 channel) from the 1970s (125 watts per channel when in stereo mode). I've had the 702S2 pair for about a year now and I chose them after previewing a large number of competing speakers. They are the best I've ever had or heard for a broad range of listening (opera to hard rcck). They are a little light on the bass so I plan on getting the B&W DB4s subwoofer to add. I am thrilled with the 702s and with the Crutchfield service.
