Transfer CDs into a bit-perfect digital music archive

Bluesound Vault 2i

Keep a collection of digital music files on your computer? The Bluesound VAULT 2i may just be the upgrade you're looking for. Its built-in CD ripper makes bit-perfect digital copies of your discs, ensuring every detail is preserved. And with 2TB of storage, there's plenty of room for big high-resolution audio files.

The VAULT 2i features a wired Ethernet port for connecting to your home network. You can transfer your existing digital music files from computers on your network, consolidating all your digital libraries for easy access. And the VAULT 2i can be part of a Bluesound multi-room wireless audio system.

Compatible with AirPlay 2*

Built-in Apple AirPlay 2 technology lets you stream audio directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® computer through your Bluesound system. That includes soundtracks from YouTube® videos and Netflix movies.

And if you subscribe to Apple Music®, you can do even more. Use Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV 4K to control Apple Music with voice commands. Tell it what selection or playlist to play — and which Bluesound speakers or components you want it to play through.

*Firmware update required.

High-quality Bluetooth streaming

The VAULT 2i features aptX® HD Bluetooth streaming for higher-fidelity sound with compatible Bluetooth devices. The system is backward-compatible with earlier forms of Bluetooth, too. You can even share that Bluetooth source with other Bluesound music players around your house that are connected to your network.

A universe of music options

Bluesound is compatible with virtually all digital music formats — including high-resolution files up to 24-bit/192kHz. Access the music stored on your computer or a networked hard drive. Stream from internet radio stations and online services like Spotify®, Pandora, Deezer, and TIDAL (including their high-res MQA service tier). You can also enjoy downloads from high-res music sites such as HDtracks.

Two USB inputs located on the back panel lets you connect an HDD drive (2TB minimum) to back up your files stored on the Bluesound VAULT 2i. Note: this formats the USB drive to Linux and will erase all previously stored contents of the drive.

Control it all with an app

The BlueOS controller app is a free download for both Apple® and Android™ devices. Select songs from your smartphone or tablet. The app displays all of your music services, internet radio stations, and digital music libraries stored on your computer or server. Play music in one room, all rooms, or different tracks in different spaces around your home through BluOS-compatible speakers and players.

System Features

Vault 2i: The Bluesound Vault 2i provides a convenient way to store and listen to your digital music collection through your existing entertainment system and home network. The Vault 2i features a CD-ripper and 2TB hard-drive to store you CD-Audio music files. It also offers a wired network connection and can act as a NAS drive for storage & playback of digital music files on your Windows or Mac computer. In addition, its network connection lets you access even more music from online music services and internet radio. There is even a direct USB input for connection of a USB mass storage class device that contains music files and support for Bluetooth audio streaming. All of this can be controlled from your Apple iOS or Android device using the free BluOS Controller app.

CD-Ripper w/ 2TB Hard-Drive: The Vault 2i's slot-loading CD mechanism can rip an inserted audio CD directly to its 2TB hard-drive. Rip all your CDs rapidly in lossless high-resolution FLAC or WAV formats, space-saving MP3, or both simultaneously. You can also purchase, download, and store high-resolution tracks from HDTracks (coming soon) &  HighResAudio on this dedicated ultra-quiet 2TB hard-drive; with no computer needed. Now, you'll be able to access and share your entire digital music collection and stream it in studio-quality to multiple rooms all over the home via the BluOS wireless eco-system.

  • The Vault 2i uses a quality checking process to make the rip, encode, and index the audio from a CD audio disc. This process takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes for the average 60 minute CD.
  • The Vault 2i can store up to18,000 songs in 24-bit/96kHz FLAC format. If you need more space, there is the option to add an extra USB hard drive via one of the USB (type-A) ports located on back of the Vault 2.

Note: The Vault 2i also features an Ethernet port for connecting to your home network, so you can transfer your existing digital music files from a Windows or Mac computer on your network to the Vault 2i's internal HDD.

BluOS Wireless High-Resolution Multiroom Audio: The Bluesound Vault 2i is part of the BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio eco-system - consisting of powered speakers, soundbar speakers, amplifiers, players, and hard-drives. The BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio ecosystem uses your home's wired or wireless network to connect multiple Bluesound products and play your music in perfect sync, or different music simultaneously, anywhere in your home. Using advanced technologies (like dual-band WiFi and an ARM Cortex9 1GHz Processor), BluOS can wirelessly transmit lossless music up to 24-bit/192kHz at ultra-fast speeds with no lag and zero loss in sound quality.

  • Compatible Multiroom Audio Sources: The following audio sources can be used for multiroom audio playback - internet radio (including TuneIn & iHeart Radio); online music services (including Tidal, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer, Slacker, and Napster); Bluetooth & USB audio, music libraries (from mobile devices; computers, and NAS drives); and Aux inputs (analog or digital).
  • Number of BluOS Zones: Up to 16 Bluesound devices can be connected in a strictly wireless environment. Demonstrated practice has shown that you can create up to 8 groups of 8 Bluesound devices or 4 groups of 16 Bluesound devices. If you want to connect more than 16 Bluesound devices, you will need to connect the Bluesound devices to your network using a wired connection. BluOS can then control up to 64 devices in a strictly wired environment.
Note: Gen 2i of Bluesound is compatible with earlier generations of Bluesound products.

Wired Network Connection: The Bluesound Vault 2i is fitted with a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack for a wired connection to your home's network and internet provider. This network/internet connection allows you to listen to music on the Vault 2i's hard-drive on other Bluesound devices through out your home, plus lets you stream digital music files on your network connected Windows or Mac computer, as well as stream select online music services and internet radio to your existing home audio system and the rest of your Bluesound and BluOS-enabled components throughout your home. The wired network connection also lets you ttransfer your existing digital music files from your Windows or Mac computer on the same network to the Vault 2i's internal HDD for easier access.

Notes:
  • The Bluesound Vault 2i can only be connected to your network by a wired Ethernet connection. The Vault 2i does not have a wireless network card and does not support WiFi.
  • Even though the Vault 2i only supports a wired network connection and does not support WiFi, a wireless network router is still required required for the BluOS Controller App.

High Resolution Audio: High-resolution audio tracks are either 24-bit/96kHz or 24-bit/192kHz, and contain up to 6.5x more data than standard CDs, letting you hear all the detail of your favorite music in superior quality. With full support for hi-res audio, you can stream WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, WMA-Lossless, MQA music files over your home's WiFi network or directly from a connected USB mass storage class device. The Bluesound system also supports compressed music files such as MP3, AAC, WMA and OGG. Bluesound has been designed to work with today's larger music collections, and has indexed libraries up to 200,000 songs in demonstrated practice (this will depend on the music's metadata & artwork). Bluesound also offers gapless playback by default for all supported file music types.

Compression File Type Sampling Frequency Bit Rate or Bit Depth
Compressed Lossy MP3 16-48kHz 192-320 kbps
WMA
AAC
OGG
Lossless WMA-Lossless up to 96 kHz up to 24-bit
FLAC 192 kHz up to 24-bit
ALAC
MQA
Uncompressed AIFF up 192 kHz up to 24-bit
WAV
Notes: Bluesound cannot index or play AAC files with the extension ".m4p". These files were purchased in iTunes prior to 2009 and are subject to copy protection. Apple Consumers with an iTunes Match subscription can delete and re-download these files free of charge from their iTunes Cloud

MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): Bluesound is the first wireless multiroom audio system to support MQA (Master Quality Authenticated). MQA is a revolutionary end-to-end technology that captures and delivers master quality audio in a file that's small enough to stream or download. Bluesound worked closely with MQA to implement technology inside each Bluesound component to ensure the listener will hear MQA encoded music and streams exactly like the source and the way the artist intended you to hear it when it was approved in the studio.

Outputs: The Bluesound Vault 2i provides analog & digital outputs to connect to your existing home entertainment system, plus a sub out for adding a powered sub, a headphone jack for private listening, and a trigger output for remote activation of another component.

  • Analog & Digital Outputs: The Vault 2i contains both analog and digital outputs. There is an analog RCA stereo output, plus one optical (toslink) digital output and one coax (RCA) digital output to connect the HDD to your home's existing audio system.
  • Sub Output: The Vault 2i also features a mono-RCA subwoofer output for adding a powered sub. The sub output is full-range; you will need to use the low-pass crossover in your powered sub.
  • Headphone Output: A 3.5mm headphone jack is located on the front of the Vault 2i for private listening with a set of headphones. The Vault 2i's output will be muted when headphones are connected.

Mounting Options: The Bluesound Vault 2i can simply rest on a table-top, shelf, stand, or other piece of furniture.

Firmware Updates: Firmware and software updates from Bluesound are delivered to the Vault 2i via your home network's Internet connection and the BluOS Controller app.

Q
There are conflicting answers about whether or not hi res audio files can be stored on the Vault. Specifically, is there a way to download Amazon HD song files to the Vault and play back without internet access like I can on my phone or PC?

So far, my vault has only been used for CDs. Anything that is on your pc should be transferable but Amazon music resides on Amazon.

Short answer is yes and I do so with the same process I use for my other player upstairs. I first download the 24 bit HD files that I purchase from HD Tracks onto my Mac. Since iTunes can't play HD files I have them in a separate folder. I then copy all folders/files to a USB drive and plug that into the Vault (I used to plug the USB into my upstairs player). From there I can play the files with BluOS on my phone. I just played a new one I downloaded last week. For what it's worth I can also play the Vault files on my upstairs systems connected to the Vault via WiFi. Hope that helps.

You can store any files including hi-res on the vault. When not ripping it apperrs on your network as a NAS. Not sure about Amazon HD files.

Dennis, I'm not quite sure, but based on my computer science background, I'm not sure it is limited, since it, by definition an external drive and not part of the system. But then again, my university education is from the 1970's.

Q
Can I plug this into my Denon receiver to power my speakers?
lynda  Aug 14, 2021

A
I can't see why not. I run this through my Onkyo receiver to power my speakers in several rooms and it works fine. The receiver is actually powering your speakers, this just delivers the music you want to hear. I burned over 700 CDs and still have lots of room for more music. We actually bought a second unit for our vacation home, same deal; works great!
mark  Aug 16, 2021
A
Depends on the type of speakers you have. I have Bluetooth speakers that have a small amplifier in each one. They are sometimes called powered speakers. The speakers are made by Dynaudio and they come with a preamplifier/Bluetooth unit that provides the signal to the speakers. So my vault provides the electronic music to my dynaudio via RCA cables to the preamplifier/Bluetooth unit but the speakers amplify the sound. I mostly play Sirius and iHeart radio. You might be able to use a vault as an input to your denon depends on the amp. You might need a preamplifier. I like how mine works.
douglas  Aug 15, 2021
A
Yes. The Vault 2i would connect to your receiver in the same way you'd connect a CD player. It is another line-level source, and can connect either to analog or digital inputs on your receiver. You still need the receiver to power your speakers. The Vault 2i does not have its own power amplifier, so by itself, it cannot power your speakers.
david  Aug 14, 2021
A
No, it is not an amp, just a huge hard drive storing discs
frank  Aug 14, 2021
A
If the question is does the Vault 2i have outputs that you could plug into your receiver then the answer is yes. If the question is can the Vault drive speakers, then the answer is no. It does not have an amplifier.
eric  Aug 14, 2021
A
You can plug it into your receiver as a source and use your receiver to power your speakers.
edward  Aug 14, 2021
A
You should be able to plug it into any receiver (or power amp with preamp) to power speakers. There is a catch, though. For the Bluesound Vault to work, it must be plugged directly into the internet. This means it must be near (and plugged into) your wireless router, which is poor design. There is, however, a workaround. You can get an internet extender and plug your Bluesound into that, which is what I did. It's unnecessarily complicated but it works.
thomas  Aug 14, 2021
A
Besides, I believe you can only power a subwoofer out from this unit.
victor  Aug 14, 2021
A
Hi Lynda, seems that would be redundant. Your receiver should power your speakers and you would connect the bluesound out to a line input on the receiver. Hope this helps

My Vault plugs directly into my Yamaha receiver/amplifier. I use the CD input, since my CD player is no longer needed. I have had no trouble using the Vault to play through the receiver/amplifier since I purchased and set it up two years ago. Note that I use a hard connection (not bluetooth).

Q
ethernet connection. I will not have a way to plug an ethernet cord into this unit in the room I have it in. Is there something I can buy that is wifi that will connect to my router wirelessly and have a eithernet cable come out of and connect into this?

I think what you need is called a wireless bridge or access point. Another option is a Powerline network adapter, which runs the signal out of your router, through your home's wiring, and out through another Powerline adapter to your Vault.

I had the same problem so I bought a Linksys RE6700 WiFi gigabit Range Extender with an ethernet plug on its bottom. I plugged this WiFi range extender into a wall socket, set it up with my router, plugged a ethernet cable into it, ran the ethernet cable to the Bluesound Vault 2i and plugged the ethernet cable into that. Works great.
david  Feb 11, 2021

I had the same problem. I solved it with equipment from Netgear. The Powerline Port essentially allows me to plug a port into an outlet to connect directly (through power lines) to my router. I could then plug the ethernet cord from the Vault II into the port. I thereby avoided having to string a cord across the house. Note that this piece of equipment is for HARD connections, which is what you need for the Vault II, unless you have a bluetooth adapter. That would be a different solution, hopefully someone else can address it. NOTE that there are two pieces of equipment involved, a) an adapter that plugs into an electrical outlet near your main router and directly into the router, and b) an adapter that plugs into an electrical outlet near the Vault II. In best case scenario, they are part of the same circuit, but I have had no problems with the connection despite their NOT being part of the same circuit in my household.

I used "Ethernet over Power." My router is in the basement and the Blusound is upstairs. Two small units plug into the wall power- one by the router and one by the Bluesound- and the ethernet cables from the router and Bluesound plug into those. Do your research- if your router is not on the same circuit is may not work well. Mine is working great! Good Luck!

I don't own the Vault anymore, but I do have such a solution for a music server and DAC. You can get a WiFi range extender with an ethernet port on it. The extender gets login info for your wifi network, and then you plug an ethernet cable into the side. It's small and just hangs off your power plug. I'm not allowed to link to other websites, but Google search for Netgear AC1200 WiFi Range Extender.

No problem. I have the same situation. Just buy a whole house wireless that has a remote station - and plug the Vault into the remote station. Works like a charm. I have a Zyxel multi setup in our home.

Q
Once CDs are ripped into vault2i, can the unit work without Internet access (if the internet goes down)?
campbell land  Nov 27, 2020

A
According to the Bluesound website: "Your Bluesound player does not require Internet Access to work. At its basic level, Bluesound only requires a wireless router to communicate with other Bluesound players as well as be controlled by the BluOS App from your iOS or Android mobile device or a Personal Computer on the same network. At this level, you can configure network shares from computers and NAS drives, share content stored on a Bluesound Vault, playback files from USB drives and stream Bluetooth content to your player using a Bluetooth USB Adapter (BLS-KB14-401). If you plan on ripping your CD collection using The Bluesound VAULT's bit perfect lossless ripping process, the Internet will be required. The VAULT will locate and embed metadata tag information and album artwork making the process as easy as simply inserting a CD. Without Internet access, metadata must be added manually using a third party editor." OK, that's what the website says. In practice, I found that if you don't set up a direct, wired link to the internet, things seem to get difficult. Somehow you need to plug in a bluetooth adaptor and connect it to your device; or the wireless router is still involved (somehow without internet?). I started in this direction but soon stopped, because, well, life is short. In any case, the Bluesound control panel on a PC or Mac is more stable and easier to use than the app for a phone, and I am using through the router and the internet. If I connect my phone w/app directly--error message, for example. I hope that another customer gives you a better answer than I have. I would like to know a) whether bluetooth adaptor and telephone app works well--not for me; b) whether computer can plug in directly. And I would want to hear precisely HOW someone made it work. All that said, I like this better than similar products. It is much more stable and reliable.

The onboard 2TB hard drive is a nice start but I require _far more_ storage space than that. Can a N.A.S. be plugged in to that ethernet port on the back to allow for infinite expansion of available storage space? Will this Bluesound unit recognize and "mount" external Hard Drives, be they connected via the ethernet port (N.A.S.) or one of the USB ports (portable USB 3.0 Hard Drive)?
joel  May 05, 2020

Yes you can expand via the USB input or by wirelessly linking a N.A.S. drive that is on your network.

The Ethernet port will be connected to your network. You can however have a N.A.S drive connected to your network and it can be a shared drive(s) to the vault. I have not tried connecting a USB drive to the Vault, so I am not sure if this can be used as an "external" drive. I recommend going to the Bluesound website and looking at the forum there, as there might be some information regarding USB drives.

The Bluesound Vault is intended to store all of your digital music, and to play it throughout your house. It has an optical drive for ripping music from CDs, and a 2TB hard drive for storing your music library. The Vault 2i can also stream from high res services like Tidal and Qobuz. By default the Vault rips to flac format but it an also create an MP3 copy. The Vault can be connected to your PC as a shared network drive and so you can use software on your PC to transfer MP3s to your portable music player, but in this case, why not just rip the CDs as MP3s to your PC in the first place. I'd recommend finding some of the reviews on sites like SoundStagesimplifi dot com or at Audioadvisor dot com (search Bluesound Vault). The Vault 2i may be connected to your home stereo/home theater system (via RCA cables) or to your DAC (via coax or optical cables) or to other bluesound Nodes via ethernet. The Vault2i is a hi-res digital music server and streamer for one or more hi-res Bluesound players on the home ethernet network. My CDs are ripped in flac format so as to be lossless to take advantage of the Bluesound systems Hi Res capabilities. I don't believe the Vault 2i can output files to a portable music player, and it certainly was not designed to do that. For more information about the product see the Bluesound Discussion forum on the Help Desk at bluesound dot com

Q
can you play music from the Bluesound Vault 2i to Sonos speakers throughout the home?
anthony  Aug 16, 2019

A
Yes you can most definitely do this in the settings of the Sonus app. You add it as a share. Just did it with a Vault 2. Some problems you may run into might involve your firewall. I had to go into my firewall program to allow access to the Vault so I could access it on my PC for one thing. I did that first then added the share in Sonus.

Hi Anthony, I had a salesman that said that this entirely possible. He said that the Vault 2i is essentially a NAS, so it becomes brand agnostic. I have not tried it (I do not have Sonos). Regards, Armando

I agree. To modify the track listing, you have to access the Vault as if it were a server or hard drive on your network. It's not difficult once you know the Vault's IP address and how to locate the Vault's files on your network. But it took more network savvy than I had when I bought the Vault.

Regarding Bluesound vault 2i streamer. 1. Does it do all three unfolds of Tidal MQA ? 2. To get full benefit if tidal mqa or qobuz hi-rez streaming do you have to use onboard dac and unbalanced rca analogue outputs ? In other words is digital output toslink too confined for full benefit of hi-rez streaming ?

Hi, I have not used the unit with Tidal. I have purchased and downloaded HiRes music from HDTracks but they do not use the .MQA format. I have played the purchased HDTracks music using a Flac files. The unit does a very nice job with the high res audio. Purchased from HD Tracks you have to load it yourself which is pretty easy. Output from the Unit can be done via RCA, Digital coaxial or Toshlink. I cannot tell a difference between Tosh and Digital coaxial as far as sound, I have tried both. I stream out a digital signal to a MiniDSP SHD with Dirac Live then out from that to the NAD M32 DAC. A new pair of Forte III and a pair of Klipsch Vintage KG4 speakers. Best sounding two channel system I have ever owned.

The Bluesound Vault2i does not have a wireless connection. I use it wired to my home network or with Bluetooth. So if you want to connect the speakers directly to the Vault2i the answer would be no. But if you connect the speakers to a witless network run the blue sound app on a desktop and select the wireless speakers as the sound output then yes I think it would work. I use a Mac computer so I cannot speak for how exactly this would work with a pc.
