About the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7b

Jeff Miller

Some of the best-respected headphones available

I like it when I don't have to add the qualifying phrase, "at this price." These Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 are some of the most highly respected headphones on the market, period. The fact that they come in at a relatively affordable price is just gravy.

Some of the best-respected headphones available

I like it when I don't have to add the qualifying phrase, "at this price." These Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 are some of the most highly respected headphones on the market, period. The fact that they come in at a relatively affordable price is just gravy.

They offer incredibly detailed, well-balanced sound that works for almost any genre of music. There's not a ton of bass, but it is very tightly controlled. In fact, there's not one sound characteristic that jumps out at me — it's just an overall pleasant listening experience.

Several ways to connect

This version of the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7b headphones includes two cables, one with 4.4mm balanced headphone plug. Sony developed this new industry standard connection for balanced headphone operation, and I've seen more and more companies adopt it.

This connection promises to cut down on signal noise and distortion. The compact, yet powerful iFi ZEN DAC feature this connection, and would make a great combo with these headphones. You'll also find the connection on several Sony high-res music players, the Sony's TA-ZH1ES headphone amp, and the Sennheiser HDV 820 headphone amp. For a more traditional headphone connection, Audio-Technica includes another cable with an unbalanced 3.5mm mini plug.

Features

Overview: The Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7b over-ear, high-resolution headphones let you listen to your music with depth and clarity. The headphones include two 4' cables -- one for your smart devices (3.5mm plug) and one for your Hi-Res D/A converter or headphone amplifier (balanced 4.4mm plug). You can store your headphones and cables in the included soft cloth storage pouch.

True Motion Drivers: The ATH-MSR7b headphones are equipped with large proprietary 45mm True Motion Drivers with a diamond-like carbon coating on the diaphragms which give you pure audio performance with an extended frequency response and no distortion. The Multi-layer Air Damping technology reduces vibrations and controls the airflow.

Cables: The headphones come with two separate 48" Y-type cables with A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors. One cable features a standard 3.5mm 3-pole stereo mini-plug, while the other has a 4.4mm 5-pole balanced mini-plug that works with many of the new D/A converter, headphone amplifiers, and High-Res audio players.

Comfort Features: The ear cups and headband have soft memory foam padding to give you maximum comfort. The lightweight design features optimized lateral pressure for less fatigue during long listening sessions.

Customer Q&A

3 questions already asked

Q
Is there a longer cord available or an extention cord available? The cord that came with them is too short.

A
Audio-Technical sells compatible cables (as long as it has the A2DC connectors) if you check their site under "replacement cables" (I'd link directly but it says no links in the response). Unfortunately it seem all the standard offerings are 1.2 meters (~4 ft) and fairly expensive. A high-quality extension cable for 3.5 mm or whatever connection you are using may be more useful.

Q
Noticed in some reviews that some reference a 'break in' period. Is there any special procedure to correctly break the headphones in?

A
I did not break mine in . They did improve with time so perhaps break in is important. I moved on from them .

Q
Are these the ones with a blue band around the ear piece and the logo very de-emphasized? There are two different ones pictured.

A
What you described is what I have. I'm very happy with them . They do take about 75 hours to break in. Be patient with them, they get better with time.

Yes, blue band and non-colored logo. Nice headphones, comfortable and great clarity.
