Great Receiver Anthem MRX 1140 8K
WILLIAM from Lombard, IL on 12/9/2024
Anthem receiver has great sound lots of adjustments. The sound is unbelievable best receiver I've ever had. I hear things in movies and music I never heard before very impressive. You need to take time to learn about the unit. Crutchfield tech staff are outstanding. I've used them for setup and questions always helpful. Remember to set and enjoy movies and music after setup then you will appreciate the sound produced. Great buy on sale now.
Pros: Great sound lots of adjustments. Just learned one the other day that blew me away using DYN botton on remote and selecting different mode. This is the best sounding Receiver I have ever used. I'm hearing things in movie and music that I never heard before.
Cons: not really a con but it has been a learning experience for me. but well worth it . I do wish they sent you a manual but thats what everyone does nowadays. I love this receiver great upgrade.

Great value receiver
Dave from Denver, CO on 12/8/2024
Replaced my Denon AVR-X4800H with this receiver, and also purchased the Anthem AVM 70 8K surround processor for my home theater (both through Crutchfield, a fantastic experience). Web reviews for both of these products are solid, and as you can see, Anthem went through a period of addressing issues with these units over time. I can confirm that I have had no major issues in the setup and operation of both using the latest (non-beta) firmware. My MRX 1140 is configured as a 5.2.6 with a Parasound A23+ amplifier driving my mains, and the Anthem's internal amplifiers driving the rest. I can confirm with other Crutchfield reviews that this receiver and its amplifiers provide clear dialog and dynamic reproduction in a home theater solution, and is exceptionally suited to music listening. This receiver drives my 4 ohm Martin Logan Motion and SVS surround/Atmos speakers with ease, and for me, ARC room correction was significantly better than Dirac (on my Denon) at corrections for my crazy combined kitchen/family room acoustics. ARC handles bass correction and multiple subwoofers with ease. I like a bit more bass than the default, and this was easy to adjust with ARC. When comparing the 1140 with the AVM 70, consider the great value the 1140 provides with 5 AB and 6 class D amplifiers built in. Spent $3K+ extra to deploy the AVM 70 with external amplifiers in the home theater to achieve similar results. Some reviews mention fan noise, however, I have not experienced this.
Pros: * ARC Room correction with included microphone and full bass control included * 11 channels of amplification included * Full web based configuration is ahead of Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, etc.... (In my opinion) * Crutchfield guarantee makes sure you can try it risk free *Check out ASR and other reviews on the quality of the amplifiers and sound processing
Cons: * Make sure to select an Analog input before starting ARC room correction, or you may hear nothing (found this in a Youtube ARC instruction video, and it was true for my experience) * For me, the remote is not as nice as my Denon / Yamaha experiences have been * Not an inexpensive solution, but I feel it provides good value, especially given that ARC is included

Infuriating fan design. Otherwise magnificent.
Alexis from Chicago, IL on 6/20/2024
I have to take one star aware for the asinine cooling design. This thing has 2 fans (from what I read on the internet) and at least one of them is way too loud. This is a $4k MSRP avr, and this thing should be dead quit. It's a shame too because it's easy to fix. One or two Noctua fans at low speed (i.e. dead silent) mean the integrated fans never turn on. It's a $30 part. With some internal mounting and a PWM controller. Beyond that... Some other weird decisions. The blinding blue LED was certainly a choice. I'll have to try to see if it can be safely disconnected, seeing there isn't an option to dim it or turn it off. There is an option to dim the screen but it's still a bit on the bright side to my taste, luckily you can have it turn it off automatically and only light up when changing the volume for instance. For some reason you can't change the delay though. I LOVE the web interface to access all the options. That's amazing. ARC is a breeze to use. Love the option that lets me, for a given input, lets me choose a default audio mode for stereo vs. multichannel. Sound is magnificent. Honestly it's a 10/10 AVR. Except for the unacceptable noise fan. And the weird decision to have a brighter than the sun LED on the front. Both of these are trivial fixes that they apparently just decided to not.
Pros: Quality of sound / picture Ease of use All options accessible on a web interface
Cons: Fan Noise Bright Blue LED Some minor configurations missing

Worth the upgrade
Aung from Escondido, CA on 4/23/2024
A major step up from Onkyo TX RZ50. I previously bought not too long ago the Onkyo but I felt I was missing something. The RZ50 is not a bad AVR, but seems to reach its limit when playing louder and I lost some clarity with voices and a much over abundance of bass. So I decided to step up my game and bought the MRX 1140 for comparison.( The ARC software, another aside comment the ARC software is not intuitive and takes time to learn how to use it. Search online as there are plenty of resources on YouTube.) After running the ARC software, the sound is amazing and the room has opened up so much head space. Dolby Atmos is amazing with spatial imaging I was lacking with the Onkyo. Bass management worked much better and fuller surround sound overall. Going up in brand and cost does make a significant difference.
Pros: Large overall spatial surround sound and excellent bass management. Really fell the punch. Small form factor compared to other competitors in this price range and smaller perhaps due to the clean toroidal power supply.
Cons: Fan does turn off and on. Low audible noise. Doesn't bother me. However you should be aware.

Expensive but CHEAP
Michael from Ottawa, IL on 2/13/2024
The first thing that stands out is that the paperwork is non exsistant. why would any one want to download a booklet that would cost 40 dollars at a print shop VER CHEAP I like to see a hard copy to look at. You say to help defray cost to the buyer, which means you are willing to use lesser qaulity parts to reduce the overall cost. As of yet, I have not fired it up yet, I hopes it works. Kind of sad it appears to be cheap. Please explain why it cost around 4000 to 5000 dollars, and no paperwork. CHEAP VERY CHEAP STAY AWAY DO NOT BUY

Anthem MRX 1140 8K
Joel from Alexandria, MN on 1/3/2024
The MRX 1140 8K works great. I went a little cheap on the speakers in my theater, but with the ARC audio correction capabilities, it allows me to review my speaker EQ curves, makes a recommended adjustment and then allows me to adjust them manually to accommodate any missing frequencies in the curve. Given my background in live sound and general sound reproduction, these features are something that I look for and expect when it comes to tweaking a sound system. Anthem does a good job of producing a premium feel with the included RTA microphone, and microphone stand, you have everything you need to get started with the room corrections.
Pros: Anthem Room Correction Premium feel Premium sound ARC software allows you to visualize your room and your speakers EQs
Cons: A bit pricey Android app is out of date and doesn't work for newer Android versions

Fantastic AVR
Robert from Prosper, TX on 11/22/2023
The Anthem MRX 1140 is a fantastic AVR! I have a Marantz SR7015 and an Onkyo RZ50. Marantz uses Audyssey room correction and Onkyo comes with the basic version of Dirac. Dirac is a step up from Audyssey when you purchase a U-mic for your calibration. ARC Genesis (Anthem's room correction) when used with a laptop for me is a step up from Dirac due to it's ease of use, speed to perform the room correction calibration and ability to integrate bass correction with your speakers. 8K upgrade - all 10 HDMI connections (7 in and 3 out) support 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz. The Black Friday sale price made this decision an no brainer. The clarity and spaciousness of the sound for music, movies and gaming is a distinct improvement over the Marantz and the Onkyo. I'm so glad I made this purchase!!!
Pros: Great sound clarity and sound stage. ARC Genesis Room Correction - comes with its own calibrated microphone and boom for setting up your room. 8K upgrade to HDMI inputs for movies, gaming, etc., all 10 HDMI connections (7 in and 3 out) support 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz. 11.2 channels driven for 7.2.6 room set up with 15.2 channel pre-outs for expanding the system.
Cons: I don't really consider this a con, but you have to use a laptop to get the most out of ARC Genesis room correction. This may be too intimidating for some people, but there are plenty of Youtube videos that will walk you through the process.

Exceptional A

I replaced a 2year old Marantz pre-pro with the MRX 1140 and couldn't be happier. I didn't purchase my unit from Crutchfield but wanted to inform others of this AVR. The sound quality from the Anthem is ridiculously good and is quite a bit better than the Marantz IMO. The main thing I didn't like about the Marantz was lack of fine tuning ability and the overly warm sound. The Anthem is amazingly adjustable and with the web interface you can tune every aspect of the sound from your phone, tablet, or laptop. ARC Genesis is absolutely next level when compared to Audyssey. It comes with a really nice tripod for the ARC Genesis. I am running Sonus Faber speakers with an SVS 16 Ultra and I the difference in sound quality is nothing short of amazing. The imaging and separation of sounds is fantastic. If you want to add external amps the pre-outs are 5 volts which is really good, you will get the true power from your amplifier. Setup was easy although it took a minute to figure out the wifi connection. Yes, it's expensive, but you get what you pay for. If you are on the fence, buy once/cry once, you won't regret it. You would swear you were listening to separates.

Amazing MRX 1140 8k
Chito from Seattle, WA on 9/15/2023
I was amazed with the clarity, detail and dynamics of MRX 1140 8k. I re-watched my favorite movies and I was really surprised because a lot of things and details I didn't hear before on my old avr was really evident on MRX 1140 8K every small details . My speakers become alive! Very satisfied with the performance of this avr. ARC Genesis maximizes your system potential. It's so powerful yet intuitive to use phase alignment is really helpful..bass is tight . I can't go back to my old avr.
Pros: Sound is excellent, ARC Genesis maximizes your system potential
Cons: Bit pricey.

Anthem MRX 1140 8K WOW !
Dariam from GARLAND, TX on 9/6/2023
I'm coming from trying 2 Sony AZ5000ES and 1 AZ7000ES that I was trying to purchase for my home theater systems. The Sony's had great positioning sound and very good surround effects, that's why I tried to make it work and went through 3 of those units, but they were full of issues from reboots, to random clicks in stand by, to pops coming from the speakers when navigating menus from my streaming boxes, with no fix on sight from Sony. I'm glad that the Sony's had those issues and I had to return them, because otherwise I would've missed on the sound this receiver produces. For 2 channel audio with music I'm putting it next to my dedicated amp and DAC that I use with my high end headphones. I did not know a receiver could have this level of separation, definition and clarity WOW ! Am I impressed ! For multi channel movies and TV shows if the Sony were a 10 for positioning and surround effects the Anthem is a 9. But the sound this Anthem produces, the quality when you listen 1 by 1 , is just better than the Sony, more detailed, better quality and greater separation. I have had a receiver with DIRAC and to my ears and my space ARC Genesis is easier to use and sounds way better than DIRAC ever did with my Pioneer. Set up was a breeze, I connected to my WI-FI using my iPhone in no time and the web interface for set up is just the best thing ever. This thing is pricy but you get what you pay for, especially if you have good hearing and you know what to listen for in your sound.
Pros: Amazing separation of instruments, very spatial and great details ! Beautiful design and great display. Small footprint is very welcomed in my set up. ARC Genesis is better than DIRAC to my ears. Atmos and DTS X using in 7.2.4 sounds amazing ! ARC Genesis and everything you need to calibrate including an amazing professional tripod and MIC are included at no extra cost !
Cons: Sometimes I can hear the fan if everything is completely silent. Is a very smooth sound at least in my unit and you have to listen for it really hard but it is there if you listen. It doesn't bother me though.

Best in class
Hans A. from Albuquerque, NM on 2/24/2023
After shopping for a new AVR for over 10 months (upgrading from a Yamaha RX-V6A). This one though caught my eye and ears a few months into my search, and ended up going for it after some hemming and hawing between this, the Marantz Cinema 40, and the Yamaha Aventage A8A. I couldn't be happier with my choice. There was a slight learning curve with setting up the web interface, but the interface itself once set up is very intuitive and easy to navigate. I ran ARC right out of the box, and WOW did it impress. I'm running a slightly power hungry Elac Debut 2.0 7.1.2 setup, but this made my speakers sing and then some. Its sound is nice and neutral, but in no way hollow. All of the emotion, feel and gravitas is still there with no unwanted coloration. My home theater is mainly for gaming, and the spacial sound this produces when playing is second to none that I've heard. Footsteps and directional dialogue are as intelligible, crisp and clear as any louder effects like explosions or gunfire, but nothing overwhelms either. Music comes out beautifully, intelligible and clean, with absolute clarity and surgical separation and no loss of detail or any added noise. If you're on the fence about this vs an equivalent Marantz or Yamaha like I was, demo it if you can. It will not disappoint, and more likely, it'll wow you like it did me. Cannot more highly recommend.
Pros: Exceptional audio, fantastic built quality, sleek design, intuitive web interface and the best room correction I've heard that doesn't cost $300 for a license.
Cons: A bit pricier than the competition.

Anthem 1148
Richard from Richmond, KY on 2/22/2023
Can't tell you too much, but at this point I'm really happy with the sound and the adjustability of this unit. Have not ran ARC yet. Can't wait to hear the difference. I can see at the moment where adjustment is needed, but hey right out of the box excellence isn't bad. Still definitely in the learning phase with this unit. From regular TV to movies to music. All is very impressive with little to no adjustment. Again can't wait to see the abilities of this system after ARC. Plenty of power to run my 6 ohm speakers. Took a year to make this decision. Can't be happier at this point. Only downfall I see at this point is the remote. Have some buttons sticking and just feels cheap.
Pros: Many options on how to set up your inputs and outputs. Very easy to change any option on the fly as well. Can control everything from 4 different options. Cell, computer, remote, and front panel. Sound is very detailed and warm.
Cons: Remote is cheap and buttons stick. When streaming from phone front panel. It tells you what's on but immediately goes back to volume. Would be nice if that would stay up or even be put on TV screen.

Don't be discouraged by the other reviewers. A few months back, I decided I wanted 5.2.4 HT and started replacing everything in my 5.1 setup (Denon AVR, Klipsch rp-8000f, 504c, 502s, spl120). I purchased the Marantz SR7015 from Crutchfield. And since I wanted to audition speakers before purchase, I went to my local HiFi shop. I decided on Paradigm Founder 120H towers, 90C center, 70LCRs for surrounds, CI Elite E80-A V2s for heights, two JL Audio e112 subs, and two AudioQuest PQ3s. I connected everything up, ran Audyssey, started listening, and then came disappointment. Maybe the speakers need to break in, so I played brown noise for a week while at work. Then I re-ran Audyssey using the $20 App and made a few adjustments, it was better, but I still wasn't thrilled with the results. I started to 2nd guess my speaker choice. I called the store and found out that when I auditioned the Founders, they were powered by an MRX 1140. So, I went back to the store, and we performed an A/B comparison powering the Founders w/SR7015, then w/MRX...WOW, what a difference. The MRX produced this airy holographic audio image that gave me goosebumps! I went home with an MRX 1140 8K, and thankfully Crutchfield made it easy to return the SR7015. Anthem's web UI is robust yet user-friendly, and ARC Genesis is phenomenal. PS - based on the store's recommendation, I enabled beta updates in the MRX and haven't experienced anything the other reviewers mentioned, and I couldn't be happier.
Pros: Phenomenal Sound Excellent Channel Separation Built In 32-bit/784 kHz DAC Toroidal Power Supply Great Web UI ARC Genesis 15 Channel Support Independently Controlled Subs
Cons: The included remote could be better.

How does Anthem Compare with the big box brands
HiFI Ed from Bowie, MD on 9/17/2022
This Anthem flagship AVR does not compete with big box brands I am used to with regards to specs and features however I was surprisingly impressed by the audio performance and sound quality. I did hear disinct levels of separation I had not previously heard on my Yamaha or Denon, particularly in the surround back speakers. The problem is the audio codecs available in this unit are underwhelming. There are no DSP programs that are common with other receivers, and the unit does not support Auro-3D which is disappointing. Currently, there is only hand full of AVRs available that supports 8K or 4k 120 with all HDMI inputs however I suspect this will change in the upcoming months. Even with the power disparity between the height and main channels this AVR has a lot of juice. The 8K60/4k120 claims actually work today with the current firmware. The massive LCD on the front of the unit is a nice touch but mostly underutilized. 80% of the screen simply displays the volume while helpful information like input/output sound profiles is displayed in tiny font on the margins of the screen. The HDMI GUI on the receiver is underwhelming compared to many others however you can intuitively control the receiver through your computer when practical. Lastly, ARC has a polished UI and I was satisfied with the results. The supplied mic looks impressive.
Pros: Sounds quality
Cons: Features, Ease of use when utilizing the supplied remote or HDMI overlay.

Anthem MRX 1140 8K
John L. from Spanaway, WA on 9/6/2022
Too quirky for a high dollar AVR. So many Arc handshake issues to rear speakers at times not working too a corrupted screen. and just last night my cat and dog got the living crap scared out of them, I just finished saving another Arc genesis setup and tested the non working surround and height speakers setup when she went full blast at a pretty high freq sound. If it was lower I am sure speaker damaged would have occurred. It was the loudest sound ever. I've tried and tried with this beautiful MRX 1140 but it is not ready for prime time. I "upgraded" from a Marantz 8005 that never, ever gave me any of these problems. Gosh I wish I could stick it out but I spent too much money on an inferior product. I will mention that I tried an Onkyo RZ-50 that worked so good for three weeks out of the box and would have gladly kept it but I got the one and only one with a faulty LED screen that would not turn on. Sorry If I offend the hardcore Anthem fans ( I really wanted to be one trust me) but for the price it is not worth the quirks and never ending issues you may experience. Starting the return option and going back to a lowly Marantz/Denone/Onkyo AVR
Pros: Looks cool and clean, nice Web interface menus.
Cons: Expensive and not worth the price.

Anthem MRX 1140 8K
4star man from NC on 9/2/2022
* not a final review yet. I have nothing to compare it with other than CAX81, but that's a completely different equipment. Things I like: - ARC is making wonders in my space. It helped to seamlessly integrate 2 x 13" subs with a pair of in-wall speakers. Listening fatigue that was there before the calibration and phase correction is gone. I still have it with my CAX81 with no room correction, so all my future purchases of stereo equipment would include room correction. - It sounds clear, clean, and revealing, bringing new life to my favorite songs and makes me discover new things that I now really enjoy listening. Xanadu from Ummet Ozcan is a great example of dynamic music that MRX1140 plays very well. - WEB UI is really good, easy to navigate and change things. Love that saves are automatic and real time. Things to consider: - internal fan is audible and kicks in regardless if you are playing something on it or not. - remote feels cheap Things to improve: - Streaming Spotify and changing songs is causing loud distortion and noise for a spit second. I would hate to buy a separate streamer for that, but this is seriously impacting listening experience.

Worked Less than 24 Hours
Veronika from Seattle, WA on 8/25/2022
I am moving from the MRX 1120 and I found that the MRX 1140 provided a slight upgrade to the sound profile, however it could be a more of a result of the upgraded ARC Genesis room correction. That being said, Anthem receivers are hands down the best A/V receivers I have heard for both video as well as two channel audio. The two channel audio is an important feature for me and would be difficult for me to move in another direction. The reason I upgraded was more for the HDMI 2.1 upgrade to game at 4K 120hz. Also note, you get charged for the return. It is only $12 but it adds insult to injury to get charged for a faulty product. This should be passed on to Anthem or taken care of by Crutchfield instead of penalizing the customer for putting faith in them. Not only did I get a faulty product that has no replacement available, I had to pack up this heavy beast and get it to UPS and get charged for the experience. At this point, I am not sure if I am willing to reinvest in the 1140 8K but I will watch the forums to see if anyone else has issues.
Pros: Two Channel Audio is Sublime. The sound stage is amazing, the highs are ethereal, mids are rich and full and the bass is quick and controlled. Dolby Atmos and surround sound is otherworldly Added support for streaming services instead of relying on play-fi Picture quality was stunning while it worked I prefer the looks of this receiver above my 1120 The web configuration is a lot better, though not perfect
Cons: Died in less than 24 hours It has a cooling fan instead of passive cooling that is audible at low volumes. The on-screen menu (via the television/hdmi out) is not as functional as it was on the 1120. I could not get the speaker test to work via the web interface I wish that the web config was TLS instead of HTTP Get charged for the return.
