About the Polk Audio LSi M 702 f/x

Kristen Schaub

Realistic, wraparound special effects for movie night

Like the larger, floor-standing LSi M models, these surround speakers each feature Polk's Dynamic Sonic Engine. Made up of a 3-1/4" midrange driver and a 1" ring radiator tweeter in its own acoustically sealed enclosure, this tightly spaced duo acts like a "mini-monitor." The precise alignment of the midrange and tweeter allows them to disperse sound over a wide, uniform area with excellent off-axis response in the critical 200 Hz to 2,000 Hz midrange.

Realistic, wraparound special effects for movie night

Any movie fan will tell you that surround speakers are an integral part of recreating the movie theater experience in your home. Polk's LSi M 702 f/x speakers were designed just for that purpose. Building upon the widely acclaimed LSi family of speakers, the new LSi M series incorporates the latest developments in speaker technology. The '702 f/x speakers excel at delivering the kind of wide, deep rear soundstage that puts you in the action. You'll also notice realistic details like the zing of bullets rushing past or the rustle of leaves.

Polk's Dynamic Sonic Engine: The speaker within a speaker

Dynamic Sonic Engine

An exploded view of Polk's Dynamic Sonic Engine with a tightly spaced tweeter and midrange.

The ring radiator tweeter features several improvements from the version in the earlier LSi line. A slight reshaping of the tweeter's bullet-shaped phase plug allows it to move even farther out of the baffle, while a redesigned diaphragm has made the tweeter even more efficient. It even has its own tuned enclosure within the Dynamic Sonic Engine. These changes result in higher power handling, extended dynamic range, improved dispersion, and extended high-frequency response — all the way up to 30,000 Hz!

Advanced driver material for even more realistic sound

The original LSi speakers featured a light, stiff mineral-filled polypropylene cone that was "puffed up" with injected air to form a honeycomb-like structure. The new super cell aerated polypropylene uses larger "puffed cells" to create a cone material that's thicker yet lighter than the original. It's used in both the midrange and woofer, allowing them to move faster and with more efficiency. This speaker also uses proprietary Orth Crossovers to send the right frequencies to the right drivers, making it extremely efficient and easier for your receiver or amplifier to drive.

PowerPort technology for smooth, deep bass

Like all LSi M speakers, the 6-1/2" woofer in each of the '702 f/x speakers has its own PowerPort®. Designed exclusively by Polk, this specially designed "cone" at the mouth of the bass port directs moving air to eliminate bass-stealing turbulence. No turbulence means no wasted power, which means more efficient bass response.

Grilles off

Solid cabinet design for versatile placement

The '702 f/x cabinets are made of heavily braced 3/4" thick MDF with even thicker front baffles (1-1/4") to keep sound-coloring resonances to a minimum. The magnetic grilles easily snap on and off, and they measure less than 1mm thick, so they won't interfere with the sound. A wall distance switch on the back of each speaker ensures you get the best possible bass performance without any "boominess," whether you place them on tables in the corners of your room or mount them on your walls.

Achieve startling realism and seamless surround effects when you build a complete LSi M system. All LSi M models feature the same components and tuning, so you can use the LSi M 702 f/x surround speakers in the back of your room with either the bookshelf or floor-standing speakers in the front of your room for high-performance sound, with a matching center channel speaker for crisp dialogue.

Driver Technology

Performance Objectives of the Polk Audio LSiM Series Loudspeakers: The LSiM series loudspeakers are Polk Audio's best high-performance loudspeaker. Polk Audio designed the LSiM series loudspeakers to create a sound that virtually transports you to the scene of the recorded performance. It was engineered & created with the following performance objectives in mind.

  • Pleasing tonality, even during extended listening at performance levels.
  • Crisp, lifelike impulses, transients & coherent detail without any unnatural ringing or decay.
  • Natural reproduction of complex low frequency instruments & special effects.
  • Uniform sonic representation within the listening area & immersive spatial impression.
  • Reproduce concert/theater levels while maintaining linearity and accuracy.
  • Compatibility with a wide array of electronics both past, present & future.
  • Work as promised for many years of enjoyment (5 year parts & labor warranty).

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response, & low distortion.

3-Way Driver System: The Polk Audio LSiM series surround loudspeakers employ a 3-way driver system for crisp, detailed highs; natural, lifelike midrange; and accurate, dynamic midbass. The surround loudspeakers house a 1" (diameter) Dynamic Balance Enhanced Ring Radiator Tweeter, a 3.25" (diameter) Dynamic Balance Super Cell Aerated Polypropylene cone midrange driver, & a 6.5" (diameter) Dynamic Balance Super Cell Aerated Polypropylene cone midbass woofer.

Enhanced Ring Radiator Tweeter: The ring radiator tweeter was a vital element in the success of Polk Audio's original LSi Series. Polk Audio engineers have made some nuanced improvements in the design of this tweeter. First, they reshaped the tweeter's bullet-shaped phase plug, allowing it to move farther out of the baffle, improving dispersion and eliminating horn-loading. Next, they opened up the tweeter's face-plate, then redesigned the tweeter's diaphragm roll to make it more efficient and improve dispersion even more. Finally, they gave the new ring radiator tweeter its own tuned enclosure (Dynamic Sonic Engine). This new ring radiator tweeter boasts higher power handling, extended dynamic range, improved dispersion and extended top-end response.

Super Cell Aerated Polypropylene (APP) Cone Woofer: If the perfect cone material is lightweight (for faster, more efficient action) and stiff (for less distortion-causing flex), with enough internal damping to suppress and offset any limitations of its lightweight stiffness, then the Super Cell APP Cone Material is about as perfect as cone material gets. Aerated Polypropylene (APP) is a mineral-filled polypropylene material that's been "puffed up" with injected air to form a honey-comb structure. Polk Audio's original APP cone approached the ideal balance of lightweight stiffness with high damping, along with good resistance to moisture, UV and temperature extremes. Next generation LSiM series loudspeakers employ Polk Audio's next generation of APP Super Cell. In Super Cell APP, the "puffed cells" are larger, for a thicker cone material that actually has less mass than the original APP material. Super Cell APP has larger cells, for lighter weight and more inherent damping, plus uncompromised stiffness, for unsurpassed transient response and resonance suppression.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: Durable, soft, injection-molded butyl rubber surrounds are tuned to absorb and suppress unwanted cone resonances. Polk Audio's butyl rubber material is impervious to UV, extreme temps & humidity, for a lifetime of smooth, reliable sound.

Extended Linear Motion Voice Coils: Allowing lots of movement in a limited space, ELM Voice Coils power the LSiM series speaker's mid-range & mid-woofer drivers to extend their higher-frequency response with much less impedance.

Cast Aluminum Baskets: These lightweight, cast aluminum baskets provide a rigid structure for precise alignment of the speaker's active parts, for flat response & low distortion, with no mechanical resonances or ringing. The open design provides ample venting for unobstructed linear movement.

Orth Crossovers: The Polk Audio LSiM series surround speakers employ proprietary engineering, designed and patented by Polk Audio to maintain a lower order crossover design & increase power handling. Orth Crossovers feature Mylar/polypropylene capacitors for sparkling highs & Air Core Inductors for superior transparency. Notch Filters and sophisticated Zobel circuits smooth the impedance curve of the system for more efficiency & better high frequency response.

  • Tweeter/Midrange Crossover: 2.4 kHz 18 dB/oct
  • Midrange/Midbass Crossover: 240 Hz 12 dB/oct

Timbre-Match Series: You can achieve incredible realism & seamless surround effects when you build a complete Polk Audio LSiM series speaker system. All LSiM series speaker models feature the same components & tuning for perfect timbre-matching.

Frequency Response Note: The overall frequency response is 45Hz to 40kHz & the -3dB frequency response is 55Hz to 30kHz.

Enclosure Design

High-Gloss Black Wood Veneer: The Polk Audio LSiM loudspeakers are finished in a high-gloss black, furniture-grade wood veneer.

MDF Enclosure: The enclosure is an integral part of the sound design of the Polk Audio LSiM series loudspeakers. All LSiM cabinets are made of .75" MDF, with wide-radius baffles of robust 1.25" MDF. Substantial internal bracing (each driver has its own separate non-parallel chamber) increases efficiency and banishes internal resonances & standing waves, for high power handling and incredible smoothness. Wide-radius baffles, along with zero-diffraction magnetic grilles, help stabilize imaging for a very wide, well-defined soundstage.

Dynamic Sonic Engine (DSE): At the heart of the Polk Audio LSiM series surround loudspeakers is an enclosure-within-the-enclosure design (known as the Dynamic Sonic Engine) that houses the mid-range driver & the ring radiator tweeter. Molded into one rigid piece, the DSE enclosure tapers to a "turbine" that reduces back-wave reflections. The DSE combines its two speakers in an aligned, optimized array for wide, uniform dispersion in the critical 200Hz-2kHz midrange, improving transient response. The combination delivers exact timbre-matching, improved high-frequency dispersion and greater horizontal off-axis response.

Note: The ring radiator tweeter & midrange driver are housed in a separate internal sealed enclosure from the ported enclosure which houses the midbass woofer.

PowerPort Bass Venting: PowerPort Bass Venting is a Patented Polk Audio technology that uses a specially designed "cone" at the mouth of the bass port to direct moving air as it exits the port. Air moving out of a bass port creates turbulence, which can result in boomy distortion & "port noise", especially at high volume. This distortion can cause bass output losses up to 3dB, wasting lots of amp power. To eliminate bass-stealing turbulence at the mouth of the port, Polk Audio engineers designed the PowerPort. It's unique shape promotes "laminar" airflow even in short tube ports by mimicking the properties of longer, flared port openings. No turbulence means no wasted power, which means more efficient bass response.

Zero-Diffraction Magnetic Grille: The super thin (1mm), zero-diffraction grille has no measurable effect on the speaker's response. Completely unobtrusive, stylishly sheer; the grille locks into place magnetically.

Connections

Gold-Plated Binding Posts: Each surround loudspeaker has one set of gold-plated binding posts. The binding posts will accept bare wire (16-12 AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, & banana plugs (single only).

Color-Coded: The surround speakers' binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive & negative.

Mounting Options

Keyhole Slots for Wall-Mounting: The LSiM series surround loudspeakers have built-in dual keyhole slots for wall mounting (stud-mounting recommended). The dual keyhole slots are spaced 12" apart (a mounting template is provided). The surround loudspeakers can be hung either on side walls or rear walls. The loudspeakers should be mounted 6-8' off the floor. If you're setting up a 7.1 system, mount the Surround Back Left & Surround Back Right loudspeakers at the same height as the Surround Left & Surround Right loudspeakers.

Note: The LSiM series surround loudspeakers should be oriented so that the Dynamic Sonic Engine (3 1/4" mid-range / 1" Ring Radiator tweeter) points toward your listening area. Therefore, the surround loudspeaker that would serve as the right surround on a sidewall will become the left surround on a rear wall.

Wall Distance Switch: The LSiM series surround loudspeakers feature a wall distance switch located on the baffle underneath the grille. If position limitations demand that the surround loudspeakers be mounted closer than 2' from side walls or ceiling, the proximity of the surface can result in a response "bump" between 50 & 200Hz. This can cause the loudspeakers to sound "boomy". The wall distance switch flattens the response & eliminates "boominess" without sacrificing deep bass response for more lifelike sound. Set the switch accordingly to <2' or >2'.

Q
Can I use these in a 5.1 setup with three Polk S35 center speakers [center, front L/R] and the LSi M 702 as rear speakers [or vice versa with the LSi M 702 front L/R and the S35 rear L/R?

A
They will make EXCELLENT rears! The LSi M 702s
damian  Dec 22, 2020
A
Yes on the 5.1 They are for the rear surround or rear height. I would not recommend them for fronts. They were not built for fronts. I have never listened to a system that had three centers in the front. Maybe if the system is just for movies it could work. For music I prefer large towers .
al  Dec 21, 2020
A
Of course you can, but the timbre of the speakers may not match up well. Things may sound a bit different in the midrange on up. The tweeters are very different in the two models so you might not get that linear sound all around. One of the best ways to setup a surround speaker system is to have all of the speakers match or even better, they should all be identical so they sound identical from every channel. I think you'll be better off going with the S30 model for surrounds as they have the same drivers as the S35. They would sound identical all around.
elton  Dec 18, 2020
A
Yes
teddy  Dec 18, 2020
A
im afraid not. center channels receive voice level sound for image presentation(in front of you like the movies). you'll need front l/r speakers like bookshelves or floorstanders which play a larger part of the sound picture itself. your surrounds fill in detail(bullets whizzing, etc). you'll also need a subwoofer for dynamic impact. think car wrecks, etc. these are simply fabulous surrounds however they are waaaaaay above the pay grade of where you are now and might out(overshine) what you're looking at right now. hope that was helpful.
irvin  Dec 17, 2020
A
you really wouldn't want to use the 702s as fronts, use the 35s as lcr and the 702s in back, it will work just fine
conor  Dec 17, 2020
A
The 702 are designed as surround speakers and would be suited for side or rear surround dispersion. They would not give appropriate sound staging as front or center channels. The S35 could certainly be used as L/C/R channels, particularly if all three were oriented vertically. The center channel could be used horizontally, which is a common orientation but not optimal. You would also want a subwoofer, or preferably multiple subs to provide full range and low frequency effects.

Q
Would these work well with Monitor 70's?
scott  Dec 05, 2020
6 answers
A
As you probably already know, the general advice is to pick a surround speaker made by the same manufacturer as your main speakers, due to expected tonal similarities. This advice is probably more apt for a center channel than surrounds I don't have Monitor speakers so I don't know what their sonic signature is.
james  Dec 07, 2020
A
More than likely. if they are still selling them at a substantial discount I would not hesitate to buy them again at that price.
tracy  Dec 06, 2020
A
Since I'm not familiar with monitor 70s oh, I cannot say for sure. I'm using two different brand speakers in our home theater. A Randall sound for the front left Center and right, and the Polk 702 f/x in the rear. Timbre matching isn't perfect but very close. Hope that helps you
jeff  Dec 06, 2020
A
Well all I can tell you is they work great with my Polk 707 fronts 706 center 703 surround backs. There a wonderful speaker and I don't see why they wouldn't sound great with your Monitors. And for this price there unbelievable ly good. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please ask. Also there a real good looking speaker. If you're hanging them Polk sends a template so it makes it super easy to hang them.
eugene  Dec 05, 2020
A
Possibly. I think they will as long as your receiver can adjust the signal to all the channels enough to balance out the sound. The 702's can sound amazing but may overpower the 70's if they are not balanced right.
jason  Dec 05, 2020
A
I do not have the monitor 70s so I cannot give a precise answer, although I understand the question, given the great price point. However, I think ideally speaking, and for purposes of appropriate timbre matching, each speaker or speaker set is/are best matched with others in its own series. I am using these in a 7.1 home theater setup with 2 LSIM-707s, 1 LSIM 706c, and another pair of LSIM 702 f/x surrounds.

Q
Could these be used for height effects for dolby atmos ?
gregory  Dec 05, 2020
9 answers
A
I really don't think they would be good for Heights. they are heavy and they way the speakers are pointed are not suited. I hope this helps
bernardo  Dec 12, 2020
A
No I dont believe they would be a good option for that. The midrange and tweeter would not point at your listening position in that application or placement. From my playing around with putting them in various positions it seems to me that they truly are designed specifically to be surround speakers.
gregory e  Dec 12, 2020
A
Yes they would work, but they are heavy and if you want to hang them make sure you screw them into a wall stud.
norbert k  Dec 11, 2020
A
Good Q.. I took it 1 step further, I already was using (4) of them for Surround back & middle. They're so good, & look great. I just bought (4) more & am using them for Height channels! Incredible is all I can say.. Don't believe the BS IE small little junk speakers etc is all you need etc These go through the Frequency range & Timber matching is key for balancing your setup..
sean  Dec 11, 2020
A
Yes, I have them mounted on my wall at about 6' high
peter  Dec 11, 2020
A
They can be used as front or rear speakers but unfortunately not for Dolby Atmos. Despite that the sound quality is really amazing especially at the $300.00 price point.
michael  Dec 11, 2020
A
No, I would not recommend it. I tried them as fronts and then heights. I ended up moving them back to surrounds. They do not have a wide dispersion of sound. They are more of a side direction speaker.
michael  Dec 11, 2020
A
These speakers are truly remarkable. They're large, but they sound so crisp and clear, I think they're good for any applications including front main. Hope this helps
tyrone  Dec 11, 2020
A
Using them as fronts.Large and heavy. Better off with in-wall in my opinion.

you will need bookshelf or floorstanding speakers which are full range(20hz-20khz). these dont have that range.
irvin  Dec 17, 2020
A
There is a right speaker and a left speaker. It's because of the way the drivers are arranged. It's very simple. I don't know about your gear but there a great sounding speaker
eugene  Dec 05, 2020
A
I would think they would work very well with those. What he means is that these are di-pole speakers so they need to face the direction of the listener. These speakers are designed to be one on the left and one on the right of the listener and it matters which one you use due to the speaker design. You will see once you remove the grills.

Q
If not wall mounted, where / how do you place these? Tables ? Stands?

You can put them on a table. A speaker stand unless it's very wide and sturdy won't accommodate them
eugene  Dec 05, 2020

I'm not mounting them at all .... too big and heavy
ernest  Dec 05, 2020
A
I used drywall toggle anchor(100lbs). Holds 100 lbs without using a stud. Wish I could post a picture for you I don't see how in this format. Hope this helps.
jonathan  Dec 04, 2020
A
I got these and put them on stands that are about 4 feet tall and use them as side side surrounds. They are much bigger than I would have thought before hand. They can be mounted on a wall but definitely need them to be secure since not light. I personally think they are too big to mount on wall from an aesthetic standpoint but to each his own. If I could do it over again would probably go with a smaller speaker instead of this one to be honest. they sound fine but just because they are so big

Q
Would these work well as stereo bookshelf speakers?

A
I use them as surround speakers. They could work as bookshelf speakers but you'll need a big space /shelf they are big and weigh 30Llbs. each.
raymond  Nov 23, 2020
A
Yes, but very heavy. That are excellent as surround back speakers on the floor and the piano finish is very unique decor active.
george w  Nov 22, 2020
A
To me there are much better options for stereo bookshelf speakers. The 702's are not at all a bookshelf footprint by the way. I would recommend a pair of KEF bookshelves, Emotiva B1+, GoldenEar bookshelves, etc. If you know and love the LsiM sound, I'd try to find a pair of 703's which are fantastic, and a wonderful bookshelf speaker. Hope this helps! Thank you for using Crutchfield, I love this company and have for decades!
chad  Nov 22, 2020
A
Would they actually be going in an enclosed bookshelf, or on stands? Sure, the 702s will make sound in such a setup, but they're not designed to be used as "mains". You'd be better going with the LSiM 703, or the Signature Series S20. Both do nicely for stereo, however, are rear ported, which could be boomy if placed in a recessed bookshelf.
scott  Nov 22, 2020
A
They are working great for me. You have to switch left and right. Loving them.
mitchell  Nov 22, 2020
A
In my uneducated opinion yes as long as you have a large enough and sturdy shelf, because theyre around 28lbs each. They would mount well if you can make sure you have a strong mount secure in a strong stud. I wouldn't trust just dry wall even with drywall anchors.

You can hang them anywhere but at least one stud is recommended. Mine are on one stud and one molly that holds 41 pounds. Polk tells you what size screws and mollys to get. They also come with a template that makes hanging a breeze
eugene  Dec 05, 2020

Yes, but you'll need a special apparatus that hooks into the keyholes in the back. Those holes are usually for hanging them on the wall.
