Recording Features
Overview: Canon's flagship EOS R1 mirrorless digital camera has a newly-designed 24.2 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS image sensor. The camera is compatible with RF-mount lenses, and with the EF-EOS Mount Adapter (sold separately), you can use all of your EF and EF-S lenses. No lenses are included in this "body only" kit.
Image Sensor: The EOS R1 has a new Canon-designed 24.2MP full-frame, back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor (36.0mm x 24.0mm) with Dual Pixel AF. Its built-in neural upscaling feature can double the image size vertically and horizontally to create a 96MP JPEG image in about 10 seconds. The sensor supports the new cross-type AF to give you faster, more stable focusing performance. The completely new DIGIC Accelerator was developed by Canon to supplement the DIGIC X image processor. The Accelerator handles the processing of the EOS R1's new features, while the DIGIC X focuses solely on image processing. The speed of the sensor readout is blazing fast, virtually eliminating rolling shutter distortion caused by the Electronic Shutter.
Touch Screen Monitor: The EOS R1 features the 3.2" Clear View LCD II TFT color monitor with approximately 2.1-million dots which allows you to view and shoot real-time images. The monitor has a capacitive touch screen that allows you to make menu selections, touch focus and touch shutter in Live View, and browse images using your fingers. The LCD monitor offers 100% viewing coverage and 7 manual brightness levels to choose from. In Live View, grid lines can be displayed in 9 sections (3x3), 24 sections (6x4), or 9 sections (3x3) with diagonals, as well as a dual-axis electronic level that can be displayed in two sizes-large or small. The Live View function enables you to shoot your subjects while viewing them on the LCD monitor.
0.64" OLED Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): The Canon EOS R1 uses an eye-level viewfinder with 0.9x magnification for approximately 100% vertical and horizontal coverage. The 0.64" OLED EVF has approximately 9.44-million dots. A -4.0 to +2.0m-1 diopter lets you adjust the viewfinder's image to your eyesight. At maximum brightness, this new electronic viewfinder is the brightest available in an EOS R-series camera.
Vertical Grip: The camera has a built-in vertical grip, which makes it easier to shoot in portrait orientation. An extra set of controls (shutter release, multi-controller, AE lock, Quick Control dial, AF point selection, etc.) is provided near the bottom of the camera to let you make adjustments and shoot photos and videos when the camera is rotated 90°. To avoid accidental button presses, the controls for vertical shooting can be turned on or off as needed.
Durability: The EOS R1 is constructed with a high impact-resistant magnesium alloy chassis to protect it from the rigors of professional photography. It has outstanding electro-magnetic shielding and is highly resistant to water and dust. The dials feature contactless detection mechanisms to improve reliability by reducing the number of parts that cause wear out. For photographers who desire to use the mechanical shutter extensively, the shutter is performance-rated for up to 500,000 actuations.
Recording Media: The EOS R1 is equipped with two memory card slots that accept CFexpress Type B memory cards. In the menu, you can select the recording method when two cards are inserted in the camera:
- Separate Cards: You can record still photos and movies on separate cards (i.e. Still Photos on Card 1 and Movies on Card 2)
- Standard: Record still photos and movies to the same card until it becomes full. You will need to manually switch to the other card to resume recording.
- Auto Switch Card: Same as standard, but the camera automatically switches to the other card when one card becomes full.
- Record in Separate Sizes: Records an image in one size on one card and the same image in another size on the other card.
- Record to Multiple Cards: For each shot, a photo is recorded to both cards in the same image quality.
Still Image Recording Formats: The camera records still images in JPEG, HEIF, RAW and C-RAW. JPEG and HEIF images can be recorded in four sizes: L, M, S1, and S2. The Image Quality (compression) can be selected on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high). The higher the image quality number indicates lower compression, but fewer shots available. Simultaneous RAW + JPEG and RAW + HEIF recordings are also possible. The image's aspect ratio can be set to 3:2, 1.6x crop, 4:3, 16:9, or 1:1. JPEG and HEIF images will be saved with the set aspect ratio, while RAW images will always be saved in 3:2. The 1.6x Crop setting can be used when using a telephoto lens, because it magnifies the center of the image (an area equivalent to APS-C size). If using an RF-S or EF-S lens, 1.6x Crop is set automatically. Available image sizes include:

4K Movie Frame Grab: You can select any desired frame from a 4K movie, and save it as a JPEG or HEIF still photo. Frame Grab is done during playback. The resolution of the still images are as follows:
- 4K DCI (17:9): 4096 x 2160 (8.8 MP)
- 4K UHD (16:9): 3840 x 2160 (8.3 MP)
In-camera Upscaling: The DIGIC Accelerator chip has a new neural upscaling feature that uses deep learning to double the horizontal and vertical size of a large JPEG or HEIF image on your card, while leaving the original image untouched, in about 10 seconds. You can convert individual images, or choose a range of images from the saved images on the card.
In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS): The EOS R1 features 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization, which allows you to shoot still images at slower shutter speeds, and reduce camera shake when shooting movies with a non-IS lens. In addition, when an RF lens with Image Stabilization (IS) is attached, the EOS R1 provides IS Coordinated Control for an even higher degree of shake correction up to 8.5 stops at the center, and 7.5 stops at the edges of the image.
Mechanical and Electronic Shutters: The camera features both mechanical and electronic shutters. The mechanical shutter has a range of 1/8000 second to 30 seconds. The electronic shutter provides a wider range of speeds, from 1/64000 to 30 seconds. With the electronic shutter, you can capture images at up to 40 frames per second in RAW, JPEG, or HEIF.
Drive Modes: The Canon EOS R1 offers the following Drive modes:
- Single Shooting: When you press the shutter button completely, only one shot will be taken.
- Continuous Shooting: While you press and hold the shutter button completely, multiple shots will be taken
continuously. The Shutter Mode and Continuous Shooting mode settings determine the frame rate. Other conditions (shutter speed, aperture value, lens type, etc.) may slow the shooting frame rate in all modes.
- High-Speed Continuous Shooting +:
- Mechanical Shutter: approximately 12 shots per second
- Electronic 1st-curtain Shutter: approximately 12 shots per second
- Electronic Shutter: approximately 40 shots per second
- High-speed Continuous Shooting:
- Mechanical Shutter: approximately 6.2 shots per second
- Electronic 1st-curtain Shutter: approximately 8 shots per second
- Electronic Shutter: approximately 30 shots per second
- Low-speed Continuous Shooting:
- Mechanical Shutter: approximately 3 shots per second
- Electronic 1st-curtain Shutter: approximately 3 shots per second
- Electronic Shutter: approximately 5 shots per second
- High-Speed Continuous Shooting +:
- Self-Timer/Remote Control: The camera will record an image 2 or 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button on the camera. You can also shoot between 2 and 10 shots continuously after a 10-second delay. Using the optional BR-E1 Wireless Remote Control, you can operate the camera from up to approximately 16.4 feet.
Pre-Continuous Shooting: During continuous shooting, you can start capturing images before the shutter button is completely pressed. Pressing the button halfway starts the continuous shooting, allowing you to capture images before you fully press the shutter button. This feature is helpful for fully capturing a spontaneous event if you are not sure the exact moment it will occur.
Autofocus System: The EOS R1 features a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. There are 4,897 selectable AF points (83 x 59) for still photos and 4,067 points (83 x 49) for movies. In addition, the AF points can be automatically selected in up to 1,053 AF zones (39 x 27) for still photos, and 975 AF zones (39 x 25) for movies.
Focusing Modes: The camera lets you choose one of the methods for focusing:
- One-Shot AF: suited for still subjects, the camera focuses only once.
- Servo AF: for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. The subject will be focused continuously while the shutter button is pressed halfway.
- Manual Focusing: focusing manually using the focus ring on the attached lens
Subject to Detect: In the Autofocus menu, you can choose the type of subject you want the camera to detect:
- People: The camera prioritizes faces or heads of people as the main subjects to track. The menu lets you enable Eye Detection (Auto, Left eye, Right eye) for people or animals to help focus on the subject.
- Animals: The camera detects dogs, cats, birds, horses, and other animals, as well as humans to track.
- Vehicles: The camera specifically searches for cars, motorcycles, aircraft, and trains.
- None: The camera determines the main subject automatically from the subject information detected.
Action Priority: The Action Priority feature can be used when there's a lot of action in the frame to help you get the shots you want. It focuses the camera on key individuals in the frame and continuously tracks the subject, even if they are briefly obscured while shooting. Action Priority can be useful when shooting action sports such as soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
Shooting Modes: The EOS R1's offers the following shooting modes:
- Flexible-Priority AE (Fv): This mode lets you set the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO speed manually or automatically, and combine these settings with your choice of exposure compensation.
- Program AE (P): The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness.
- Shutter-Priority AE (Tv): In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject. A slow shutter speed can create a blurred effect, while a fast shutter speed can freeze action.
- Aperture-priority AE (Av): In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness. A low aperture number can create a blurred background (narrow depth of field), while a high aperture number can create a sharp foreground and background (wide depth of field).
- Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired.
- Bulb: When Bulb is set, the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button completely, and closes when you let go of the shutter button. The Bulb Timer function lets you preset the bulb exposure's exposure time. Bulb exposures are for night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, and other subjects requiring long exposures.
- Custom Modes (C1, C2, C3): You can register often-used camera settings such as shooting, menu, and custom function settings as Custom Shooting Modes, and assign them to C1, C2, or C3 presets.
Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:
- Evaluative Metering: The camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure.
- Partial Metering: Effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 5.9% of the frame at the center.
- Spot Metering: For metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 3% of the frame at the center.
- Center-weighted Average Metering: Metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene.
ISO Speed: The camera's ISO speed can be set manually or automatically. Manually, the speed can be set between ISO 100 and 102400 in 1/3- or 1-stop increments. The ISO speed can be expanded on the low end to a value equivalent to ISO 50 (L), and on the high end to ISO 204800 (H1) or ISO 409600 (H2). In ISO Auto, you can choose a minimum range of ISO 100 to 51200 (in 1-stop increments), or a maximum range of 200 to 102400 (in 1-stop increments. For movie shooting, the manual ISO speed setting is ISO 100-32000 and H (equivalent to 51200) in minimum range, and ISO 200-32000 and H (equivalent to 51200, 102400, or 204800) in maximum range. The Maximum ISO Auto setting for movies is ISO 6400-3200 and H (equivalent to 51200, 102400, or 204800).
