Beautiful music, beautiful instrument
David from Ormond Beach, FL on 7/9/2025
Not so long ago the purchase of a CD player meant that the purchaser was trading off musical quality both in accurate digital signal measurements as well as inaccuracies inherent in conversion into analog audio signals. Many companies marketed expensive digital to audio converters to improve the "musicality" of existing and future music software. Other manufacturers improved the quality of their hardware to more accurately capture improve capture of the musical software. This competition has led to significant advancements and a subsequent lowering of prices to the point where several manufactures now provide high quality transcription of CDs at strikingly lower costs to the consumer. The Cambridge player offers an extremely well built and a design that should provide years of future music enjoyment. Like many other musical "geeks" the beauty of the reproduced music is my primary interest, but my enjoyment also includes my respect and admiration for a fine instrument to play my software.

A Bit Disappointed
John from Southgate, MI on 5/9/2025
I am a bit disappointed, I was expecting this unit to be Silver face, it is Lunar Grey which is not a big deal as it does looking pleasing to enough the eyes. Also there is no printed Owners manual included, I had to download it from the Cambridge web site and that cleared up a few things about the front panel buttons that were not operating as I expected, or sometimes I need to press a button twice on the front panel and only press the corresponding remote control buttons once.
Pros: It does play all of my older scratched CD's my retiring CD player was no longer able to accomplish. It does seem well constructed though.
Cons: No printed owners manual included. Also some confusion on how to properly operate the unit via the front panel buttons.

Blaine from GRAMERCY, LA on 3/21/2025
I was skeptical spending this much money on a cd player since I could've easily spent way less on a vintage cd player. But I was really surprised on it. The cd tray mechanism is smooth and quickly shoots in and out when putting in cds, it reads cds extremely fast, and the overall quality is really good. I could easily recommend this to anyone who wants a good but not overly expensive new cd player.
Pros: Cd trey mechanism is quick and snappy Reads discs extremely fast Overall build is quite high quality for the price
Cons: Remote is straight out of one of Cambridge's amplifier and not meant directly for the cd player. Other than that I have had zero negative things to say.

Good definition - separates instruments well
Phillip from Vadnais Heights, MN on 1/27/2025
I am still becoming familiar with the AXC35. Two CD discs I listened to were Ravel's String Quartet in F Major and the third Velvet Underground album. One thing I distinctly pay attention to is the sound of a string being plucked. The second movement of Ravel's string quartet begins with a pizzicato passage that is a challenging test for any piece of audio equipment. I thought it was reproduced well. On The Velvet Underground, the strings on the acoustic guitar played on track five of side one, have a unique sound that came through accurately. The instruction manual could have more information and clarity. Loading discs can be awkward. The small height of the CD tray requires considerable care when loading discs to avoid bumping the edge of the disc on the front panel due to the tight clearances.

It passes the 'I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One' test! Breaking in nicely. Acoustic music shines. Bass is warm and full. Maybe not quite as musical as the Denon 600, but not disappointing. Purchased this for a second system for the bedroom. Mix of older and newer equipment.

Dennis from READING, PA on 1/16/2025
Bought this player to "upgrade" my system built around the Cambridge CXA61 and specifically to replace my aging Onkyo c7030 unit. The first thing I noticed was a difference in color between the faceplates of the two Cambridge units. Then I discovered the CXA61 remote would not control the cd player. Finally, I played a disc and found the sound to be lacking. Long story short, I reconnected the Onkyo and then connected the AXC35 to my AXA35 amp where it does not sound nearly as good as the Onkyo but at least is compatible with the AXA35 remote.
Pros: Compatible with AXA35 remote
Cons: Doesn't integrate well with CXA61 Musically, there are better choices

Nice player
Dennis from Sinking Spring, PA on 2/7/2024
First off, the unit arrived quickly and safely so hats off to Crutchfield. Now for Cambridge. No RCA or coax cable is supplied, but there is a note to use their products. If they wanted me to do that, they should have shipped some with the player. Minor point, but I had to borrow some RCA cables to start burn in. Other than that, the unit plays well after 12 hours of play. The drawer is quick, the discs read quickly, and the sound is not bad using the built in DAC to the Cambridge AXA35 amp and Paradigm Atoms. For the intended use, casual listening in my office, it's all I need. IMO, no need for an external DAC in a lower end system such as this $700 dollar setup. If I was to use this with my main setup, I would use a coax cable through my amps internal DAC as it appears this is a decent transport.
Pros: Bang for the buck
Cons: No RCA or coax cable in box

Certified Great Surprise
James from Loudon, TN on 2/3/2024
Bought an open-box and I can't tell from new. This is replacing a 12 year-old Onkyo that was starting to skip. Not only is this CD player beautiful to look at, it functions and performs exceedingly well, with quick reads upon insertion of CD, and super fast tray actions. Have it hooked up currently to my Schiit headphone stack and let me tell you it sounds FANTASTIC. Can't say what voodoo Cambridge worked up inside this player but I perceive a distinct upgrade in audio quality with the Cambridge as opposed to the Onkyo, especially on the low end, where the bass is now much more fast, defined, and fuller. And that's where I like to play with my headphones. I will likely move the player to my 2-channel system in the future, but for now it's killing it with my headphone setup. Heck, maybe I just buy another AXC35 for the 2-channel. Build quality, features, and functionality are all very, very good, and I'm beyond ecstatic with the purchase. Bravo Cambridge Audio!

Cambridge Audio AXC35
I ran this with Klipsch R-50M speakers, & a well kept Sansui Classique 550 receiver. I compared the player with 2 other players (Arcam CD5 & a 1990 Sony CDP-291), & various CD's. The build quality seemed good. I felt the unit would be reliable & last awhile. It's not graceful per se, but solid. It diligently played everything I put into it (stuff the old Sony would never play). No bells & whistles....just kind of an old school player, which I like. I like that it will work on Euro voltage as well. That's nice if you ever have to move (which I have). The sound, unfortunately, I thought, was lacking color & inconsistent. I wasn't craving for more. I did blind tests with friends (including an audio engineer, & a musician), & even tried a different receiver....but it was the same. It's ok. I give it 4 stars, considering its one of the lower priced models (though still a chunk of cash). I think it would do better if you ran it through a separate DAC. Made in China, as most of these are.
Pros: Solid & simple
Cons: Sound is "meh"

I was totally confused between separate DAC and CD transport, or CD player. my current system is valued at approximately $8000 and I didn't want to spend a great deal on how I accessed my CD collection. The Cambridge AXC35 was exactly what I was looking for. The first selection I played was Grover, Washington Junior, Winelight. I immediately noticed the clarity, imaging, and sounds stage and new immediately. The Cambridge was exactly what I was looking for. I would highly recommend the AXC35 to anyone that has a substantial CD collection and does not want to break the bank in hearing their music as if you were hearing it for the first time.

Richer Sound
Robert from Nebo, NC on 11/28/2023
In the early days of CD, the thinness of the sound was easily demonstrated by turning the volume way down and listening to the music, gradually fading it. Compared to LP's, CD's came off as anemic. With it's superior DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), this unit is a big step up. Turn the volume down and listen: at very low volume, it still sounds like music! It's a nice looking unit as well, and has programming functions if you use the remote that don't clutter the base unit with a confusing cluster of buttons. Assuming that it keeps doing its thing for years to come (we just got it last week), very well pleased.
Pros: Looks nice and sounds great.
Cons: Cost a bit more than my receiver! But, a lot less than the $5000 one I saw for sale, lol.

Great as either player or transport
Daniel from LA PORTE, IN on 9/8/2023
I am using this with a Cambridge Audio AXR-100 receiver. Prior to adding the AXC-35, I had been using a Sony Blu-Ray player as a CD transport. My main reason for buying the CA AXC35 was to have a single (Cambridge) remote to control the receiver and player when listening to CD's - silly but true. I initially connected the unit to the receiver as a transport using one of the digital inputs. It worked fine in that role though, not surprisingly, it sounded essentially identical to the Sony BD. Many people will argue that transports can affect sound. I have read arguments about jitter and various other factors but, in my opinion, any properly functioning transport will read the digital information and pass it along to the DAC, just as well as the next. Out of curiosity, I switched the AXC-35 over to the "player" configuration and connected to one the amplifier's analog inputs. With the AXC's internal DAC handling the conversion, I was surprised at the noticeable improvement in sound, compared to the AXR's internal DAC. Fuller, cleaner and more airy across the audio spectrum. The AXC's internal DAC (Wolfson WM8524) may be a little dated but, to my ears, offers superior performance over the "no-name" DAC of similar spec's that is used in the AXR-100. In addition to quality sound, the unit functions well. It loads fast and seems to have a solid build. Operation is fairly basic and intuitive. It covers all of my needs for what I need a CD player to do.
Pros: Player Transport Solid Build
Cons: No digital optical output - only coax

I purchased as an "outlet" item so know there was some risk. Crutchfield as always packaged the product very well so I was confident that there would be no issues on that end. Unfortunately the display only shows on the bottom half of the display window. This is not that big of a deal to me as the information displayed is very basic anyway - Track Number, total time, etc.....This is the only reason that I rated it 4 Stars! I purchased this unit to replace an old Technics SL-PD9 5-disc changer that I had not used in a number of years. I do not have much experience with mid-level CD players so cannot review based on any comparators but I am extremely pleased with the way this (attached to my Adcom SA-10) sounds. My trial CD was MMJ Circuital and it sounded great! Overall, I would highly recommend this CD Player.

Last year, I wanted to get AXC 35, but the item had been long out of stock. Instead, I've bought NAD C538 and used it satisfactorily, then recently I broke up the gear by accident. I actually took the chance to get AXC 35 which is fortunately in stock this time. I love British sound, so my Harbeth speakers and tube amps are all British-made. Compared to NAD C538, AXC 35 seems to be slightly higher in both construction and sound quality. Full midrange and no harsh high-end and no dull low-end. I'd like to affirmatively and strongly recommend this Cambridge CDP, if you search under $500.

Richard from HUMBLE, TX on 8/14/2022
I shared with advisor Jody that I wanted to have a CD player as all my disc players are DVD-type and it just made sense to have something designed specifically for music, since 90-95% of my play is music CD's. He suggested the Cambridge Audio AXC35 and I readily agreed as it was one I had considered. I'm very happy with the performance of this player and feel that it is an upgrade in sound. Shipping was, as usual, precise and timely. I recommend this unit for those who have a CD collection. For reference, I'm using this in my all-analog system featuring Rotel stereo pre-amp (1550), Parasound power-amp (275v.2), bi-wired to DefTech D-11 speakers. it's a very nice detailed sound.

Cambridge Audio AXC35 MY setup: cd player> dac (Denafrips Ares II)> amp ( Sansui AU9500)>speakers>sub (REL). I also use the Bluesound node (bought thru Crutchfield) for internet access and use it for amazon HD music, Utube music and flac files with the USB in the Bluesound node . I am using this cd player as a transport only and am glad I do. I first listened to it thru RCA cables straight to amp and found the sound to be a bit flat or lacking. When I ran it as a transport only thru my dac it improved the sound immensely and enjoy it very much. The cd player does excellent job of rendering the music off a disk with no hiss or other unwanted sounds. I give the CD player 5 stars but the built in dac as only adequate.
Pros: great CD player

Amazing CD Player For The Price!
Elton from Bangor, ME on 5/28/2022
I have owned this CD player for about half a year now, and honestly I think it is one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. For being on the lower end of component CD players, the build quality is top notch. I like the layout of the front panel and the metal face. I didn't think I would use the remote control as the buttons are easily accessible, but now I find it very convenient to load the CD, get comfortable, and then start playback and program playback from the remote. One unexpected surprise is that I am able to play CDs with this player that won't read on my computer or portable CD boomboxes. A couple of CD's given to me by friends were so scratched, it made me think "these things will NEVER play," yet this player does so, flawlessly! I haven't had a single CD skip or glitch during playback. Most of my CD's are new and/or very lightly used and it's nice to know this machine will tackle all of them! I expect this player to last many years, as it seems to be built using quality components. The overall sound quality I would describe as "neutral," It doesn't seem to modify the audio signal in any way after it leaves the inbuilt DAC, which is perfect for my listening. I don't have to adjust any EQ settings on my receiver, and the sound is great. Across my many genres of music, from Bach to Def Leppard, it handles all types of music in equal sound quality and range. I definitely recommend this CD player to anyone looking for a budget-friendly, great CD play
Pros: Flawless Playback Easy To Use Remote Control Sound Quality Internal DAC is great High Quality

I've had the CD player for about a week now so it is still early going. Even so I am very positively impressed. The build quality seems very good; the unit has a sturdy feel. More importantly, sound quality is excellent. This replaces a Marantz player that was always problematic; the sound used by this Cambridge player is softer and fuller. All good so far!

Shipped and received quickly. Sounds fine - the DAC is supposedly a good one, so the fidelity of the recorded music should be true. Of course, there are so many variables involved, such as the different components that make up a person's music system. Also, I am 61 years-old with some tinnitus in my left ear, so hear music differently from when I was 21! It should be mechanically reliable for the long haul.

The first disc I played was Pink Floyd's Meddle , and right in the middle of Echoes the disc skipped . One of the reviews I read had mentioned discs skipping and I thought , oh s##t . So I cleaned the disc and replayed it and it skipped again . Now I'm thinking , I can't possibly replace a large portion of my 600 c.d.'s , so I started documenting the date , band title and which songs I listened to , to see if there were any problems . After listening to what on vinyl would be considered 50 different side A or side B , I have not had any other disc skip . The overall sound from this player is remarkable . It is like going from regular television to high def . My c.d. collection , which had been put on the back burner in favor of vinyl , is relevant again . If I had known how good c.d.'s could sound I would have bought this product ten years ago .

Your Ears Deserve This CD Player
Chance from PETOSKEY, MI on 4/8/2022
I purchased the Cambridge AXC35 CD Player after already owning the Cambridge AXA35 Integrated Amplifier for the last year -- WOW! Does this thing bring new life to my CDs! I am running these through the Klipsch RP-600M's and the sound is phenomenal -- crisp, dynamic, and full. I have been having a blast revisiting my CD collection again. And regarding my turntable, I am using the Fluance RT-85 w/ the Ortofon 2M Blue stylus -- again, it sounds like heaven through the Klipsch RP-600M speakers and Cambridge AXA35 Amplifier; however, while the internal preamp in the amplifier is sufficient, I decided to add an external preamp instead. I went with the Schiit Mani. After doing a comparison... OH, BOY... there's a difference. The Schiit Mani added much more depth and bass to the records, as well as had more noticeable reduction in noise. I've always wanted to have a solid Hi-Fi setup and without breaking the bank. I couldn't recommend this CD player, the matching amplifier, and the speakers enough. My rep who helped me with my purchase is Rachel and she was pure class. Cheers!
Pros: High Quality DAC at this price point Includes remote Sleek Design Sounds like Heaven.

O Brother How Subtle Thou Art
Rolland from Chicago, IL on 2/10/2022
This player reveals subtleties and nuance that I've never heard from anything near the price. It is a no-frills player with all the focus on performance. Listening to Diana Krall's "All For You," a disc from 1996 which was a stellar recording then and is even now, was a revelation. The soft passages were silky smooth whereas on my previous player there was a subtle edge. I also noticed as vocal levels varied the change in dynamics seemed more graceful and smooth (spell that r-e-a-l-i-s-t-i-c). Another favorite, Stravinsky's Firebird on the Telarc disc demonstrated how cleanly the loud, dynamic passages were reproduced and how smoothly the player handles transitions from soft to loud. The subtle strain I'm used to hearing on the most dynamic passages was gone. It just sounds less like a recording and more like being up close to the live performance. My only complaint has to do with the operation of the unit. It appears to change tracks requires two actions, one to choose the track number and one to touch play. It also requires two steps to engage play from a power-off state. You first power it on, then touch play. I would knock it down a star for these issues but the overall sound quality is so good I didn't have the heart to do it. This was a great choice and I'm thrilled with the value and performance for the buck! This won't be my last Cambridge Audio purchase, I'm sure.
Pros: Music sounds more like music and less like an audio file
Cons: Operation that could be a little easier.

Crutchfield customer from Metairie, LA on 2/7/2022
When my old Onkyo CD player died about 15 yrs ago, I never replaced it and instead ripped my CD collection to a hard drive for convenience. Thus condemning them to boxed storage for over a decade until I decided to purposefully listen to my vinyl and CDs again. This Cambridge CD player really makes my CDs sound fantastic compared to streaming or even my near-lossless rips. Listening again w/ headphones and enjoying the quality of this player has brought a smile to this guy's face. I didn't realize how much I missed the act of deliberative listening. A high-quality build that is easy to use and plays CDs flawlessly.

My Sony CDP mid-level CD player I bought brand new in 1988 finally died so I bought the Cambridge Audio AXC35 Cd player & I am impressed by the sound quality, this CD player actually sounds better than my old Sony CDP, I can't be any happier, great price for such a good sounding machine. You should make sure the CD player is level, my shelf was slightly un-level so I leveled the CD player with coasters under the back rubber feet making the CD player perfectly level so it reads the CD disc perfectly.

Perfect!
Regina from Willimantic, CT on 1/16/2022
I am a diehard CD compiler and listener and love using a single tray player. I've gone through a few. When my last one died I found this Cambridge Audio player online and it rated well for a moderately priced model, so I bought it. The player works well and the tray seems very solid, much more so than any other I've owned. I'm hoping that means the entire unit is well-built. My only complaint is not being able to permanently set the player to show the time remaining for each song. I have to find the remote and reset it every time I use it. Oh, and it's deeper than my other stereo components, so it's a little harder to stack. And I would have preferred a black, not silver, face. Otherwise, perfect!

Crutchfield customer from Jackson, MS on 1/2/2022
This is a simple CD player. SIMPLE- without a bunch of moving parts to go wrong like multi-disk players which should improve its longevity. It has a good remote and TOS optical links and is one of the cheapest CD players you can get with optical output. It's a perfect match for my ARX85 and sounds great. The match is very neutral sound, so you hear what the artist intended. It doesn't matter what you play- this deck plays it well.
Pros: Easy set up and operation

Not great but not a disaster
Crutchfield customer from Modesto, CA on 9/25/2021
1. The door opens & closes ok, not clunky, but not super smooth either. 2. The screen and controls are tiny and hard to see when the lights are low. 3. It doesn't save the pause location if you shut it off. It starts at the beginning of song one again. 4. If using a power bar it doesn't turn on w/ the rest of the equip. A little light turns on but you have to physically turn it on. 5. The main reason I chose this one is for the color. All my equip. is silver / aluminum / stainless. But this isn't metal at all, it's plastic and dull gray, not silver, so it doesn't match my high quality vintage stuff but since I don't want black my options were very limited in the price range. Conclusion: it's close to silver and play's CD's.
Pros: It plays CD's
Cons: color & functions

Another Cambridge Audio winner...
Alan from Rome, GA on 9/22/2021
The AXC35 is a simple, no frills CD player. It is part of the AX line from Cambridge Audio so it works visually with my AXR100. The AXR100 remote will control the AXC35 functions. This was no small consideration in choosing this CD player. In keeping with the AX line the controls on the player are straightforward. The CD tray opens and closes with authority. The build quality is solid. It does exactly what it is supposed to do and it does it well. You can program for repeat, sequence, or random play. The sound is significantly better with either DAC-cleaner, clearer, more brilliant- than my old CD player. I first used the AXC35 as a CD transport and used the DAC in the AXR100. The CD player functioned fine and the DAC on the receiver is good. I then used it as a regular CD player. To be honest, I prefer the unit running as a CD player and using its own DAC. The DAC in the AXC is bright. The DAC in the AXR100 is smoother but more covered. I prefer the bright. One drawback is that my TV remote overlaps the AXC35 codes. This is not a fault of the player, just the reality of everything having a remote these days. Bottom line? I am very happy with it. This is the first single disc player I have had. My previous CD players were all multi-disc changers. It has forced a bit of a mindset change from "how many CDs to put in" to the simpler state of "which CD" do I want to listen too. This is not a bad change. In my book the AXC35 is a winner.

AVOID THIS CONSUMER NIGHTMARE!
Crutchfield customer from North Haven, CT on 6/29/2021
BIG disappointment. It seems that there is a problem in the CD seating mechanism that causes a loud whirring sound when I try and play CDs. The malfunction doesn't happen every time I play a CD, but I have had it happen to a CD and then had the same CD play fine later. Unfortunately, it is happening more frequently. I found a complaint in the reviews from another retailer that described the same malfunction perfectly. So maybe it is a design issue, or maybe they had a bad manufacturing run? Either way, I am getting the short end of the stick. TAKE NOTE: This didn't start happening until about a week after I bought the unit. I don't have the original box/packaging anymore, so it looks like I bought myself a defective CD player. AVOID THIS CONSUMER NIGHTMARE!
Pros: Looks great.
Cons: I don't enjoy occasionally spending several minutes to get the machine to play a CD without a loud whirring sound (assuming I can get the CD to play at all).

Finding a comparable replacement
Roy Eric from Chesapeake, VA on 6/7/2021
I really don't know where to start and don't know how to rate this machine. Was hoping to have a 5 star ready but I can't! My intentions were to replace an old Carver CD player, though not top of the line by any means within the Carver lineup, but great sound reproduction. I decided to try the Cambridge AXC35. The first few CD's played flawlessly and sound was exceptional. Somewhere in my mind this CD player just doesn't have the balance and fullness that my Carver CD player does. Oddly, certain CD's will not spin without making a very audible thumping sound. I never know which CD will do this and don't want to have to insert almost 400 CD's into this player to see how many thump! However, Crutchfield customer service was very nice to send a replacement. And the replacement does the same thing but much less than the other one did. I may return it as well. I don't know if it's the age of my CD's which span back to 1984 or the internal workings of the CD player but my Carver never did this at all!! But for those CD's that do spin correctly the sound reproduced on the AXC35 is good enough for me. If I can't find a machine to play all the CD's as my old Carver does then I am at a bad cross roads because what is comparable with my Carver as a replacement? Very bummed. I need help with comparable quality if at all possible!
Pros: Nice case Great sound Great with rock & roll

The first one that I had was defective, but Crutchfield replaced it promptly. Although I have not auditioned it extensively, I am not that impressed yet. Most of the reviews that I read before I purchased it were favorable, but at the moment, I am not impressed.
Pros: Easy to set up. Can be operated by AXR 100 remote. Smooth operation.

Extremely please with the sound quality. Was well worth the wait. More important is dealing with Crutchfield was an out standing experience. Ordered 2 different units from Mr. ONLINE(name withheld to protect the guilty) that never arrived. Then I thought of Crutchfield. The AXC35 was out of stock. I chose the reserve option, no charge until shipped. A whole lot better experience then the other guy's third-party vendors.

I needed a budget cd player that had rca outputs available. After reading the reviews I went with this one. I have been more than satisfied. It's simple and has no features but, sounds fantastic! I was shopping online when I found this one. I said to myself let me check with Crutchfield. Being they're always a pleasurable company to do business with I purchased it from them. Happy all around with purchase.

I knew I needed a new CD player when the digital streaming on my receiver was sounding better than the CD's I was playing. I suspected the receiver had a better DAC, so I upgraded to the Cambridge Audio player, and am happy to say that CD's are again the best sounding music on my system. Very pleased.
Pros: It's a quality player that plays my old commercial CD's and ones that I've burned from iTunes, equally well.
Cons: It doesn't fly or make popcorn.

I bought this to go with my NAD M33 since I still like to play my CD collection (which I've yet to rip) even though streaming music through the M33 is divine. The AXC35 sounds amazing and I can't hear a difference when switching between the inboard Wolfson DAC and when connecting the AXC35's coaxial output to the M33's coaxial input to use the M33's DAC. It has great styling and fits perfectly atop the M33.

I didn't realize that the CD transport itself was as relevant to the sound as the DAC. I was wrong. I purchased a cheap TEAC about a year and a half ago after my top of the line Harman Kardon died after thirty two years. When I purchased a Cambridge integrated amp I could really notice how much better my records sounded than my CDs. I had been using AV receivers until I bought the Cambridge Amp. I decided to purchase the AXC35 after reading reviews similar to my thoughts in this review, and the difference is amazing. I am no longer buying vinyl copies of anything I have on CD. All of the fine details were reproduced and the sound stage was great. I have become a Cambridge fan for their policy of putting the money where it counts and focusing on the sound quality above everything else.

It just sounds better
Crutchfield customer from Hartsdale, NY on 1/17/2021
Purchased as a replacement for an aged and recently balky Marantz. It's paired with a Marantz Amp we have had for several years which works and sounds good. Like many recent years have moved much of my listening to streaming services. I have a Sonos system that includes a Connect. Yep it's that old. This purchase has motivated me to dip back into my CD collection. Along with the happy finds of long forgotten gems and the eye rolling questioning of past judgements, I've come to believe it just sounds better.

David from Columbus, OH on 1/8/2021
After returning multiple NAD C538 players due to a loud incessant chirping during playback, I pulled the trigger on this player. The most I can say is that CD's play on it. CDr's on the other hand are more problematic. Which may not seem to a big deal unless you like to camp out on a streaming site and transfer your digital files to disc for playback on your system and in the car. Suffice to say this piece of equipment is noisy. I dread to think how a Radigue disc late at night will come off. Oof. I guess I shouldn't hold audiophile grade gear at this price to the same level of functionality as a $35 portable player? As for sound. Since I have been constantly switching among three players over the past couple weeks, I feel I got an accurate impression of the AVC35 sonic characteristics. Some may say balanced and crisp? Some may say tinny and sterile. The bass disappears in the mix. If making everything you play sound like And Justice For All, this might be right up your alley. A serious crank of the bass knob on the receiver alleviated the issue. Never required before over the course of four other players, but there is a first time for everything. Sounds good now thankfully, albeit mechanically noisy when playing back CDr's and even some CD's.
Pros: works
Cons: Sound Mechanical noise

Crutchfield customer from Coventry, RI on 12/5/2020
Great product! Brings out details I hadn't noticed before...really (I know everyone says that). Sounds like a new system and I feel this purchase has maximized the range and stage I was getting with my Klipsch speakers. Notable: DSOTM and Yo Yo Ma Plays Morricone. Also some Linda Ronstadt CDs and others with female lead vocals seemed really bright. (Klipsch! Yeah, I know.) That appears to be smoothed out. A factory problem with the remote was handled quickly and professionally. Overall this was a great experience with my second Cambridge/Crutchfield purchase!
Pros: Better range and more defined stage. Excellent value for the price.

Simplistic and aesthetically pleasing best describes this product. I'm impressed with the build quality especially the CD transport mechanism. Nothing more than I need and simplicity comes with a sound quality that is very pleasing and realistic. I've had the player for a short time but it doesn't take long to recognize quality. I have champagne tastes and a beer budget but I definitely think this product exceeds most at this price point. I was listening to Bonnie Raitt's version of John Prine's Angel from Montgomery this morning and came away like I made the right decision. Buy with confidence! There's no disappointment here.

It's a no frills machine that places the focus on simplicity and sound quality. It is also solidly built. Surely one of the better machines under $400 plus purchasing from Crutchfield is always a plus in terms of advice, support, price, etc.

Years ago, I owned a high-end Arcam that was also fantastic. This AXC35 sounds very nearly as good for about a third the price. Rock solid built CD unit.
Crutchfield customer from Santa Barbara, CA on 8/6/2020
I've always wanted a high end CD unit. After painfully dealing with a low end player that was defective from the get go, I had had enough. I told my self that I would go with my go to company for the past 25 years now, Crutchfield. They didn't question my credit status because I have good credit, unlike a competitor whom after approving a credit line for their store, they without explanation closed it. Apparently the bank whom issued the card was responsible. Never dealing with them again. Anyways Cambridge Audio who's motto is Great British sound. Built in DAC, rock solid CD transport, etc., and all of the features that I need. Not to mention a 2 Year warranty which was extended a year after I registered my product on Cambridge's website. I really don't expect flaws from this very well built product. I have Cambridge 700 Series RCA cables which are being used for the AXC35, and the sound is great! Thumbs up!
Pros: Well built, very sturdy. Rock solid CD transport, built in DAC, etc.
Cons: None as of yet.

I am satisfied with my product. It is a basic player and that is why I purchased it. It is my opinion that simpler is better because there are fewer things subject to possible failure. It would be more important to me to write this review in 10 years - that way I could give you my opinion about reliability of the product. I choose not to have "bells and whistles" in the hopes that the product would give more years of trouble free service.

Best advisor, price and delivery
William from La Jolla, CA on 5/2/2020
Crutchfield does beautiful on the three things that matter most for me on a purchase of a new hi-fi component: (1) trusted advisor - Crutchfield finds the optimal product, in my case a well engineered, not pricey CD player with an outstanding DAC. The Cambridge Audio AXC35 replaced my older McIntosh MVP, a rather bulky CD player with excessive load time, (2) best price - Crutchfield's price equaled the bargain guys everywhere, and cost a fraction of my McIntosh, (3) fast and safe delivery - Crutchfield has no delivery charges and they ensured a safe delivery in a protective double box. The net is a customer who is a 'happy camper.'
Pros: outstanding high fidelity performance for relatively little money

Pros: Clean, clear, musical, great sound definition.
Cons: None.

A good product, wrong color
Crutchfield customer from Pearl City, HI on 3/18/2020
A clean design and good product fairly priced. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the color. It is grey rather than silver. I have an all silver-faced system and prefer to stay with that color scheme.
Pros: Reasonably-priced, good specs, well-designed
Cons: The color. I would have preferred a true silver rather than grey

Check out the Cambridge Audio AXC35
Crutchfield customer from Saint Louis, MO on 2/3/2020
After reading so many reviews of disappointing CD players I decided to give the Cambridge Audio AXC35 a spin. I ought to have done it sooner. Its Wolfson DAC brings to life aspects of even first generation CDs in my collection I'd never heard and with a precision and clarity that surprised me. Equally important, it gives them a depth and ambience they lacked with former equipment. It performs even better with newer CDs - with a sound profile describable only as "you are there." (Phonophiles beware: this unit might get you to question your taste for vinyl!). Warmly recommended. My only concern is that the CD tray opens and closes with such ferocity I wonder about its longevity.

Didn't think we'd be listening to many cd's, since we are gradually returning to our LP collection, but we play this unit a lot and are very pleased with it. Great sound, smooth intuitive operation and controls, technical specs speak for themselves.
Pros: It's all good.
Cons: No complaints at all!
