My first choice was the Cambridge Audio axr100 but found it backorder. So instead I ordered the Yamaha as501. The day it arrived Crutchfield emailed me that they just obtained a limited number of axr100 so I ordered one and requested a return for the Yamaha 501. They sent me a return label the next day and refunded me as soon as they received the Yamaha back. Great service, Thanks to all involved

This receiver is just what I was looking for. 100 watts of clean power, easy hookups, inputs for phono, cd, optical for tv connection. It's able to bi-amp my speakers and has a subwoofer output. Crutchfield had this back ordered so I took a scatch n dent. I had no trouble hooking it up and it looks and sounds great.

The receiver works great, the built in Bluetooth is very convenient, I have the unit on a shelf above the the door so I need the remote to operate it and it seems to have a difficulty on the operation even with new batteries, I don't know if being up high has anything to do with it, but all in all it's great, sounds great through my Altec Lancing voice of the theater speakers.

This is a very high-quality receiver. I have an ADCOM GFA-555 II and the sound quality is very similar. I purchased the AXR100 to drive my OHM Walsh 2 speakers and they sound great. The unit does get warm so ensure you have no obstruction on the vents. The design is clean and simple. The Bluetooth connection works great. Easy to pair up to the phone.

Pros: Clean and crisp sound quality. Power to spare.

Cons: None so far.

Pros: Setup. Sound. Bluetooth

Cons: Remote control is kind of basic looking. Needs to be upgraded to a newer style.

Has a great sound, adds a little warmth I think compared to Yamaha R-S500 or R-S202 which I also own. For me, the FM tuner is stronger in this Cambridge compared to my Yamahas. Only negative is, as some others have mentioned, is the fan and subsequent power off. This happens to me only when I'm cranking the volume near the top end, and so far only when I have my Sirius XM connected to it while doing so. I love the Yamahas too but the R-S500 is currently retired.

Cambridge AXR 100

CARL from PALMYRA, VA on 7/1/2023

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I've had my Cambridge AXR100 for over a year & I am happy with it. It has great looks with the silver faceplate, has lots of power, is sturdily built, & has a moderate, kind of laid back sound to it although it will blast rock music fine as that's my favorite genre of music. It has connections for a subwoofer, phono, CD player of course, & you can connect it to your TV through an optical cable & play it through your the Cambridge although keep in mind that it's stereo and not 4 channel. It sounds great watching YouTube rock videos. I also like that the unit will turn off after a period of time if there's no music being played through it when paired to my iPhone & I time the phone to turn off. There are complaints about the noise from the fan but that's not been a problem for me at all. It only seems to switch on if I've been playing it at a high volume when the transformer is really working. I've played it at moderate levels listening to folk or classical & it's not noticeable. I'm wondering if those who complain about the fan have a stereo component sitting on top of the 100. I do not have anything on mine, allowing good air circulation through the top grill. My big complaint is the range of the Bluetooth receiver which is disappointing. More than 10-12 feet away from the unit & the Bluetooth skips or disconnects. I had a Yamaha R-S202 receiver & its Bluetooth range was much better. Andrew Robinson has a very positive review of it on YouTube. I give the 100 4 & 1/2 stars.

Pros: Great looks and sound for the money

Cons: Disappointing Bluetooth range and tacky remote

Cooling fan noise is a dealbreaker

John from Long Island, NY on 6/30/2023

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Unfortunately the AXR100 just didn't work for my speakers (ELAC Debut Reference DBR62). Like many others, the cooling fan was a big issue. It would consistently kick in after 30-60 minutes of listening at even moderate volumes (-50db). It's pretty loud/distracting. And, I found myself anticipating it coming on. My hunch is that this is not the amp for speakers under 8ohms. The fan kicked in even more rapidly when listening to vinyl through the phono preamp on the unit. It's a shame because I love the look of this amp (though when streaming bluetooth the constant scrolling screen that I'm using my phone on the display is distracting) and it sounds pretty good (clean/neutral sound). I'm sending it back and upgrading to the Rotel A14 MKII (recommended by Crutchfield), which I'm hoping will properly power the ELACs. Crutchfield's customer service has been outstanding to work with, so this rating has nothing to do with that experience. And I think this is a solid amp for certain set-ups. Just not mine.

Pros: Look of the amp Clean, neutral sound

Cons: Cooling fan noise is a legitimate issue Not sure this amp should be used with power hungry speaker or those under 8 ohms

Follow up review: AXR100 warranty support

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is a follow-up to my review of 12/23/22: I've been extremely happy with my AXR100, but a few weeks ago the screen stopped functioning. I tried various reset options to no avail. After briefly reviewing the situation and the troubleshooting steps I had tried, Shay at Crutchfield tech support quickly authorized a warranty return and a replacement shipment. Both the return shipping and shipping of the new unit were at no cost to me. Kudos to Crutchfield for their customer support. But while the new unit qualified for Crutchfield's two-day shipping, it was not sent out until the defective unit was received back at the Crutchfield warehouse. And because I am on the west coast the warranty return shipping took more than a week. The experience would have been better if the return shipping of the defective unit had qualified for express shipping rather than the slowest possible method.

I bought this receiver to power Polk LSI 9 speakers and I'm delighted. Tried Onkyo TX 8220 (45W) but volume was inadequate and dynamic range was flat. The AXR100 provides a clear and defined sound stage and excellent sound (mostly acoustic music -jazz&classical) I hooked up my 55" Sony OLED via optic cable and this works well. Highly recommend AXR100 for quality sound and features. Blue Tooth is excellent. Bought all 3 items from Crutchfield and exchanged receivers. A longtime customer, the combination of products, stellar service, and knowledgeable sales staff and technicians is far superior to any other retailer. Period. I called customer service "teks" at least 4 times and they were uniformly excellent and spent several minutes each time. Exchange of products was prompt and pleasant. I recommend this product and also recommend buying from Crutchfield. You won't regret it

Pros: Powerful, Clear Sound Great features including Bluetooth Great customer experience

Cons: No HDMI input, only optical

First I would like to complement the Crutchfield team for having the best customer service. I never thought I was being talked into something. It felt like a couple of friends who where totally stoked to turn you on to a great product. Thank You! I have the Klipsch 600M and my reciever just wasn't bringing out what I knew these speakers could do. When I opened the box and felt the weight of this thing I knew I was in for something special. I was right this thing just makes beautiful sound paired with my Klipsch (Thanks again Fellas). Cranked up Vinyl, Tape or Digital the sound is covers ground I have never heard before. Particularly the vinyl. Just Wow! First play was "First Wave Intact" by the Secret Machines on 180g pristine vinyl. What a sonic experience! Next up was some My Morning Jacket ranging from blissed out acoustic songs to foundation shaking rock. This reciever covered all the bases. Thanks for bringing this wonderful piece into my life. You guys Rock!

Pros: Streamlined machine with epic sound.

Cons: The only con I can think of right now is the scrolling screen that reminds you that you are connected to your streaming device. This just never stops. Small con on an otherwise perfect machine!

I loved this receiver. It sounded amazing, and was beautiful, and I expected to enjoy it for years and years. And then, just a little over a year after I bought it, it stopped turning on. After googling I discovered this is a common defect. What's worse is that I accidentally left the power switched on (hard to tell when the little button barely changes and the device doesn't actually turn on) and then it eventually DID switch on, with an overload pop that blew my speakers. :( Please save yourself this heartbreak and don't buy this receiver.

A GREAT amp

Ryan from Wyoming on 4/21/2023

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Wow! I ordered this when my Yamaha rs-202 had the right channel go out. I almost went with another Yamaha, but am really glad I got the Cambridge Audio. I have this hooked up to a pair of JBL Studio 590s, with a JBL sub (not sure exact model) and stream over wifi using a chrome cast audio. What an improvement! The sound is exceptionally clear, certainly warmer than the Yamaha, and the speakers sound better at all volume levels. I did "burn in" by disconnecting the speakers and streaming overnight. Not sure if that actually helps? I'm not an audio snob. I will never own a pair of B&Ws. But, I love the sound signature I'm getting with this amp/speaker combo. Crutchfield was great, as always. Prompt shipping, good pricing and availability. Their 60 day guarantee always gives me confidence in ordering. It was well worth the splurge. Next step: bi amp wiring of the speakers!

Pros: A nice warm, deep sound signature. Bluetooth pairing is very easy. Feels exceptionally sturdy and well built in hand. Sound clarity is exceptional. Drives my large JBL 590s very well. The upside down labeling on the rear panel is a quirky bonus for when trying to hook up a speaker without inverting the amp. Pretty good looking

Cons: No real cons for me. The price seems reasonable for the quality. To me, it's worth the extra $400 to upgrade from the Yamaha rs-202.

Bought the AXR-100 as part of an overhaul to my home stereo. Overall impressed with the receiver. It provides super crisp / clean sound and at 100w it has plenty of power to drive a pair of bookshelf speakers and a sub in a larger room. Was a little concerned about some reviews noting noise from the cooler/fan but after 3 weeks I haven't noticed anything. The AXR was a bit harsh out of the box but after a break-in period it has warmed up and settled in nicely. Only real cons I see are the remote (terrible color choice for contrast and difficult to read) and the lack of a USB-B port.

Pros: Very Crisp and Clean Sound Simple interface

Cons: Remote No USB B port

I've been living with this receiver for over two years now and have been very happy with its performance. It drives my KEF Q350 speakers with no issues. I use it primarily to play vinyl records, the included phono input is convenient and adequate for my ears. Some reviews have complained about fan noise from this model, but I have never heard the fan in hundreds of hours of listening. The blue tooth input works well if the source remains in the same room as the receiver. I like having tone and balance controls on the remote so that they can be adjusted from the listening position, though I generally leave them in their flat setting. The remote is not great, you really need to point it directly at the receiver and often repeat button pushes to get it to respond.

I happened to find this receiver as a scratch and dent option. The price was unbeatable so I made the purchase. This is a serious upgrade from my Sony STR-DH190, and I am very pleased with it. Wide open, natural sound and plenty of power. I am using an external phono preamp, though. Cambridge does a great job with their receivers/amps, but the phono stage in the axr100 is lacking. Vinyl is a big part of what I listen to, so this aspect matters to me. If you're streaming or listening to CD's , etc. you will love this thing. The phono stage is the only weakness I've found.

Pros: Great sound, ample power, plenty of connections for analog as well as digital, and the scratch and dent price was fantastic!

Cons: The phono amp is subpar.

First, I think site should allow half stars, because I think 4.5 out of 5 is about right. Second, I've only had my AXR100 for one week, so it's too early to give a truly authoritative review. But so far I am extremely happy with my AXR100 and the Crutchfield experience. My system centers on two Linn Keilidh bi-wired 4-ohm speakers. My 20-year-old Rotel receiver no longer had the juice to do the speakers justice and recently intermittently lost one or more speaker outputs. My research centered on two possible replacements and Crutchfield's Ivy gave me prompt and thoughtful answers that helped me better evaluate my finalists. I ordered from Crutchfield because of their 60-day return policy (which I doubt I'll use) and customer support lines (which I haven't needed). I'm on the west coast and ordered on a Thursday with two business day delivery promised on Monday -- but my shipment was delivered on Saturday. Very cool! Setup was really simple--not surprising since the "manual" is 14 pages including boilerplate. Even configuring fm presets and bluetooth devices is simple. The sound is terrific. After 1 week I'm extremely happy. So here's my .5 star deduction-- while I love the simplicity of this receiver, I wish the front buttons and especially the button labels were a tad larger. My wife and I are in our late 60s and a small bump in size would be nice. And programmable labels, such as being able to change 'A1' to 'CD', would be nice. Nitpicky yes. But why

Pros: *Great sales support and delivery * Easy setup * Wonderful sound

Cons: * A bit more usability in the front panel controls

I was looking for a quality amplifier with good power, and bluetooth to drive my large Klipsch bookshelf speakers, and this does a great job. Plenty of power, clean, easy to use and setup. It feels well built, sounds great, and I too feel it looks very sharp. The only thing I am not a fan of, is the volume always returns to a preset level, but a very minor gripe.

Pros: Great sound, well built, easy to us, plenty of power, bluetooth!

Cons: Preset volume when powering on

Good looking receiver!

Since I still have several dozens of home made cassette mixed tapes which I seldom play anymore due to three inoperable home cassette players ,this new Cambridge Audio AX100 would help me to listen again to my old rock and roll favorites. Bought a used Teac W-860R double cassette deck with auto reverse, and all the whistles and bells from EBAY, works perfect, cleaned and demagnetized the heads, and I was rewarded with a surprisingly clean, powerful music provided by 100 watts per channel through my old EPI 8 ohm speakers! Fortunately,I had used the best available TDK and Maxell cassette tapes available in 1990, so all of them still play amazingly well after all that time! The new Cambridge Audio AXR100 makes my old EPI speakers come alive and sound so much better than before, which is outstanding!! Thank you for allowing me to enjoy my rock and roll music once more!!

Pros: 100 watts of clean power per channel will drive any 8 ohm speaker pairs, in my home!

Cons: Had to use a new power strip to be able to bypass the stand by power feature(which is only dimmable) from the factory. Most complicated am/fm memory tuning I've ever encountered yet. The technical department helped me with the link to a video to explain how to do that.

Considering the price point, the AXR100 is perhaps the best of class. The addition of a tuner puts it in the "receiver" category, but it doesn't mean that it is a great amplifier on its own right. The connectivity is excellent. Pair it with a streamer and you will have an affordable, hi-fi grade solution.

Almost returned, glad I didn't! This was my first experience with Cambridge equipment and I was excited after reading/watching numerous reviews to hear this British "clean" sound everyone was talking about. After hooking it up and demoing it with some OLA's (original large advent) I was less than thrilled. Hate wouldn't be too strong of a word to put on it. The sound was sterile with almost no bass even after turning up the onboard bass controls to max. Mids seemed washed and the bright tweeters of the Advent's made it a pure treble-fest. Had to crank to an unreasonable volume to even start hearing some bass. OK, maybe not the right speakers. Tried with everything I had laying around the house and garage: Polk RTI-A1's, nope. JBL 312's, nope. Infinity RS2000's, nope. Technics SB-A52's, nope. While none of these speakers are what would be considered high-end I've gotten a lot of use out of them and I know what they should sound like from a variety of amplifiers. Thought about returning but was soon leaving for vacation and didn't want to mess with it. 2 months later I decided to try breaking in by disconnecting speakers and letting spotify run through bluetooth at high volume for a few days. What an amazing difference! All of the above mentioned speakers now sound better than ever. The Polk's in particular are a real pleasure to listen to and I'm hearing buried vocals and instruments in songs I've listened to for years. Fan noise hasn't been an issue

Pros: Lots of clean power Easy to use Great bluetooth range and connectivity Decent built-in MM phono preamp

Cons: Needs break-in time

the best performing 100 watt receiver money can buy. the sound is clear, crisp, full with no distortion even at high volume. bass response is full but could have been a little deeper. wording on front panel too small. fm antenna way too short. I spliced my old fm antenna into it and reception is way better! display does everything-stations- song played-artist name, etc. overall finish & appearance excellent - nice brushed alum gray with rounded corners. well thought out design. volume knob has way too many turns/increments up or down. i prefer the old quick turn volume - less than 2 full turns from min to max.

Pros: easy ordering from crutchfield. fast 2-3 day delivery!!

Cons: small lettering front panel, weak fm antenna, way too many turns on volume knob

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I have to admit, I seriously doubted this receiver, all my co-workers telling me how my old amp is built better than anything today. And knowing that buying separates sound cleaner. This thing far exceeded my expectations, sounds so awesome at all volumes, and maybe I have hearing loss, but I could not hear any noise introduced. I am running all OSD audio cables (power for both sub and receiver; 2pairs speaker bi-wired; and sub). I got this for the sole purpose of using blue tooth/Spotify to power my Polk Audio Signature S60 floor speakers and Polk HTS12 powered sub. This receiver blows my "Golden Era" Japanese Kenwood integrated amp out of the water! I wanted a home stereo that sounded almost as good as my car stereo system (All Alpine: S components up front, S two ways in back, CD head unit, 45watt Alpine universal amp because the 50 watt Alpine specific was not in stock a year ago, S Halo 12 sub enclosure, S 600 watt sub amp), and this sounds better! Like 350 watts better! Like, my car stereo sounds good in the car, but fades as you get out and walk away. This receiver fills my house! Open the back door and it fills up my back yard! Open the front door, and it fills up my front yard! I think I need to put acoustic panels on my brick fence, and on my neighbors' houses! That is the only thing bad I can find to say, is the echoes from the walls, houses, are off beat the second time you hear them!

Pros: Bluetooth, very powerful clean sounding amp

Cons: Smells weird. It's not waterproof, must be very careful with drinks/friends. Wish I had bought longer cables so I could mount it closer to the ceiling.

This is one of best pieces of audio equipment I've ever purchased, and I started buying hi-fi gear back in the early 70s. I spent over a year looking for the right receiver to replace an aging and cantankerous JVC. Now that the Cambridge has arrived, I feel like I made the right decision. The physical construction is impressive. And the control layout and available inputs are exactly right for all the equipment I have. Out of the box, I had the unit hooked up and driving a pair of classic Advents in a matter of minutes. The sound is amazingly clean and the power is more than enough for my purposes. Also impressed with the FM tuner section, which seems lacking on other brands I've had experience with. Finally, others have commented on audible fan noise. I see no problem here. Yes, there is a fan and yes, when the music is really, really soft, I can barely hear it. I suspect once it goes into its permanent home in the audio cabinet, it won't be audible at all.

Outstanding amp under $1000

Gabriel from Aptos, CA on 5/12/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I've had the amp for a few weeks now and it's perfect for what I was looking for--an upgrade from a casual listener to someone who wants their first component system without breaking the bank. I wanted a set-up (amp, speakers, cable, etc.) for under $2000 and this amp fit the bill. I use it primarily for phono, so the lack of digital inputs is not a deal breaker (if I wanted that I would have bought a receiver). The stock sound out of the amp is excellent--a bit sharp, but no EQ adjustments were necessary. It sounds best when pushed a bit and at lower volumes, the bass can be lacking (but that could be as much about my speakers and large room as the amp). Bluetooth connectivity has been excellent within 30 feet and the DAC is excellent. My only criticisms are. 1. No midrange adjustment 2. Bass/Treble adjustments are in 2db increments only.

Pros: Out of box sound Attractive Price Bluetooth/DAC

Cons: Adjustments in 2db increments only No midrange adjustment

Great Amp!!!!

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I was looking for a amp with a very neutral sound, easy controls and an FM Tuner as I love having the radio on as background noise and morning news. I also wanted the ability to run a second set of speakers for the future. All reviews kept me coming back to this model; I called into Crutchfield to speak to a representative to get their opinion. Wyatt was great on the phone and we discussed what I was looking for. I received it in just a few days had it set up in no time with my turntable, cd player and speakers. Then the moment of truth; I put on Frampton Comes Alive ...undoubtably my most listened to album. It was sooooo amazing. This is my first really good amp and the difference was so exciting. The soundstage is unbelievable; tones were great, I was picking up nuances and things that were barely there on my old system. Felt like I was there!!!! Has a dedicated phono hookup and the MM pre amp is very good. CD player sounds great as well and the FM tuner is clear and the presets are easy to set up and use. Easy adjust for tweeking bass, treble and balance. I will be enjoying this amp for years as there is room to grow with the extra speaker ability, digital connections and plenty of power. Highly recommend this amp and purchase through Crutchfield!

Pros: Great Looking, Option for 2 sets of speakers, AM/FM Tuner. Plenty of hookup spots. Dedicated Phono w/ preamp. Easy set up with neutral sounds.

Cons: Cannot add a optional amp but not a problem for me....plenty of power.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I wanted to like this amp but just couldn't. First of all it's not the same color as the picture. The best way that I can describe the color is that it looks like someone tried to spray paint a grey receiver with silver paint, but they only put one coat on it. The remote is positively worthless also. The blue lettering on black buttons requires a flashlight to read. The labeling on the front panel is both tiny and needlessly complicated. Last but not least, it's not a particularly good amp to listen to either. I have two old Denons and a Sony which all sound much better. For the money I expected a much nicer product. Everything about it seems like an afterthought.

Pros: Decent power

Cons: Overpriced and poorly designed

Great Product, Amazing Power & Sound

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I absolutely love this amp! It has the proper power amount for most speakers of any size, it's sleek design is very minimal but cool, and it has so many features that anyone would love it. From the digital/optical inputs, the ability to directly stream music from various platforms(Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, etc), or the fact that you're able to connect various accessories by usb. The built in digital AM/FM radio features are also a plus if you still listen to the radio, if not it's a just another added benefit to have. Overall I've enjoyed being able to truly listen, and hear different sounds, and nuances that great music has hidden, but you only tend to hear with great speakers, and a great amp powerful enough to push that out. I've paired mine with the Cambridge Audio AX-35 CD Player, paired with the Elac Carina Bookshelf, and will be adding the Cambridge Audio CXN V2 soon. Audiophile or Not this amp is worth every penny, great for buyers on a budget, or someone who just wants an ample amount of power in a compact yet sleek design. Do yourself a favor and take a chance it doesn't color, or add anything it just pushes and plays what's already there. I owned mine for over a year now and I highly recommend this product to everyone!

Pros: Power, Sound, Versatility, ability to Stream, Connect via various platforms (USB, Bluetooth, Aux, and the ability to Bi-Wire if you'd like,

Cons: None so far!

I decided to replace my entire aging audio system this year. My first thought was to center it on a versatile integrated amplifier (receiver). The Cambridge AXR100 fit the bill. It is reasonably priced, powerful, attractive and has all the inputs needed as well as a DAC and phone stage. My Wharfedale EVO4.1 speakers paired well with this receiver and the Cambridge AXC35 CD player sounds great using the receiver's own DAC. I will likely get a record player like the Pro-Ject Carbon EVO in the near future. Crutchfield gave great suggestions especially on accessories all of which I purchased. Everything fits and works perfectly in my small living room.

Pros: - Bluetooth connection - DAC - Phono stage - Price - Looks

I got this to replace a 70's era Concept, and what I really like it its simple elegance and sound. I am not as much a fan of the remote, it seems a little big, but other than that, it just sounds pure. The only thing I wish it had was a loudness control for when listening to music at low volumes. Some have mentioned fan noise on these models, but I have not experienced that issue. All in all, I am very pleased with this unit.

After many years of surround sound, I decided to retire my Technics amp and 5.1 speakers and focus on good old fashioned stereo. After much research, I got an AXR100. It's wonderful. Clean sound, plenty of power, looks good, Bluetooth works a treat. I have it hooked up to a pair of KEF Q150s and the set-up seems extremely well matched. Very-very happy with purchase and also with Crutchfield's superb service.

Pros: Clean, warm sound Plenty of power Good looking Bluetooth

I wanted a simple receiver to run a 2 channel system, but with some punch. I think this fit the mold for what I needed. Sound is good and the power is plenty. It drives my Polk Monitor 10's enough to shake the house. Very simplistic display. All the connections were easy to set up. I run my tv thought the digital optical audio connection, my phone on the internal bluetooth connection and my phono player. All work and sound great. I am happy with this purchase and it could not have been easier. I've been a customer since the 90's. Thanks.

This receiver is exactly what I wanted. I was looking for a high quality stereo receiver for listening to music. I also wanted something I could connect my TV and play vinyl. This has excellent sound and all kinds of inputs. 3 digital, 3 analog plus a MM phono stage. And it sounds great with my PSB speakers.

Pros: Lots of inputs. Will drive 2 sets of speakers.

Not a fan of the fan

Like others, I wanted to keep this receiver. Sound was great overall, but the fan noise is too distracting. Sounds like a bird chirping. It's not too noticeable when playing louder, more rocking, music, but hearing the "chirp" over Joni Mitchell's "Blue" was a deal breaker for me. We have a smaller home, so maybe it would be less noticeable in a larger space? Some have complained about Bluetooth connectivity. I had no issues with that. Anyway, I think the AXR100 is a great value, if you can deal with the "chirp".

Pros: Overall sound, Bluetooth, value.

Cons: Fan noise.

A solid receiver

I bought the AXR100 to replace a Marantz receiver with which I had a poor experience. My impression after the first couple of weeks is that this is a solid receiver that is well made, that does exactly what I want it to do, and does it well. The sound quality is excellent. As a receiver it holds stations; this was a problem for the Marantz, as was build quality. I ran the input from my CD player into the analogue input and also to the digital optical input. The onboard DAC gave me the same quality sound as my Marantz CD6006 player - I did not hear a difference. I consider that to be good performance as I don't know who manufactures the Cambridge DAC. I wanted a receiver with only the features I would use so I was happy to do without WiFi, surround sound, and the hundreds of additional functions some other receivers offer. I think the more that is packed in, the poorer the quality of each component given the same price. This receiver does everything I expected and does it nicely - hence my 5-star rating.

Superb sound

My fabulous harman/kardon PT 2400 power amplifier of years finally smoked it's output section. Sold my HK PT 2500 pre-amp tuner (for more than I paid for it!) As it was time to move on and started looking around. I've been impressed with the Cambridge line of products as I already own An Azur 650 CD player. I love the very straightforward sleek design and simplicity of Cambridge products. Top shelf stuff at reasonable prices. The tuner is terrific but the amplifier is superb! To me it's the ideal amplifier "a wire with gain". Zero adjustments to bass, treble or balance. It powers a new pair of JBL L82 classics (fabulous) and a Klipsch R-10SWi sub woofer. I can't image how the sound could be any better even by spending thousands more! In other reviews I noted some complaints about the fan noise. Fortunately for me that is not an issue and honestly, I didn't even know this unit had a cooling fan until I read these reviews.

Pros: Simple straight forward design with perfect sound

Cons: Typical non-illuminated remote with buttons too small for easy use. Par for todays equipment. For me though it's the sound reproduction that's important and that overrides minor inconveniences. Five stars!

It has been about 2 months running the Cambridge Audio AXR100. The first thing that really sold me on my purchase was the ability of the AXR100 to pull in FM stations that honestly were not available with a Pioneer receiver. Living in the mountains, the nearest large town (Denver, Colorado springs) are about 50 miles away and some of their stations come in strong and clear. My biggest disappointment would be the option of using Bluetooth to stream music from my computer (amazonHD). It works sometime. Streaming from my phone thru BT is fine so I am assuming the problem is with Windows 10. There seems to be issues across the industry with BT sample rates, bit depth and bit rates. My setup is streaming music from my computer thru a Cambridge Audio Dacmagic XS to the AXR100 Audio RCA inputs. Nothin better than sitting in a recliner with a computer next to you engaging playlists with the volume cranked up. The AXR100 is ready for the future with lots of inputs and the FM is the best.

Pros: Lots of power Strong FM

Cons: No specs on built in DAC

For years I've been using home theater receivers to drive 7.1 as well as stereo sound. I purchased the AXR100 for a dedicated stereo/phono setup in our home office/library. The sound quality produced by the AXR100 is phenomenal, my Klipsch RB-81 (gen 1) have never sounded this good. Low, mid, high all sound exceptional. We have a desktop workstation connected with an optical cable, vintage JVC QL-Y66F turntable through the phono, and also make use the Bluetooth connection through our phones/laptop. My only criticism of the AXR100 is the Bluetooth functionality. We've experienced random split second audio drops while connected via Bluetooth, and I've been unable to diagnose the cause. This con is however largely outweighed by the pros which include: sound quality, build quality, aesthetic appearance, features, & affordability.

Pros: Sound quality Build quality Aesthetics Features Affordability

Cons: Bluetooth issues

Great sound for Vinyl - Solid performer in its price range

Kurt from Manhattan, IL on 12/1/2021

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I have had the receiver just a bit over a month now. It replaced a Yamaha RX-V465 (AV) system that I have had for at least 12 years. Th receiver is in my 22-18 family room and used primarily for vinyl, then bluetooth (spotify), and lastly TV. I paired it with Bowers and wilkins 8inch sub and 606s2 bookshelves. The unit is simple to operate and sounds great in all of my applications. The bluetooth range and connection is fast and fairly strong. I begin to have range issues when going into my kitchen which is like 30plus feet away and to the direct right side of the unit (anywhere in my living room is just fine. I have a U-Turn turntable and playing albums is exceedingly more satisfying than I am used to. The definition is good and I can really get a muscular sound even with the bookshelves and small sub. I notice more articulation and far less distortion on vocals. The tone adjustments are satisfying (good) frequencies although have their limits. I use the digital connector for TV and find the sound to be good for movies. That being said, I cant say I would recommend the receiver for someone with theater sound first in mind. Compared to other units in this price range, I feel the cambridge is hard to beat for what I was looking to use it for. The unit is solid and heavy. The knobs and buttons have a quality feel and there is no lack of engineering or cheap/inferior build. The remote is straightforward and rounds out the package nicely.

Pros: Great sound Easy to use Phono input Bluetooth flexible

Cons: would prefer tone and balance knobs

This is a great sounding amp, especially for the money. We loved it so much we almost kept it despite its flaw. It sounded great through all sources and was very forgiving to poorly recorded music. Unfortunately, ours had the noisy fan problem that has plagued others. If you jam out to your music, you'll never hear it until the music stops. The fan noise was ever present, always humming in the background, when we listened to classical, softer jazz, or any music with a wide dynamic range really. Cambridge should work with a company like Noctua to put some deadly silent fans in their products. Even if it raised the price of the AXR100 it would still be one of the best amps under $1000 I'd wager. Cheers to Customer Support for the friendly and awesome service!

Pros: Great sound, features, and value for dollar

Cons: Noisy fan, limited to 1 paired bluetooth device at a time

Incredible DAC -- very good quality and value for the price. I had been using a Yamaha integrated amp for almost a decade, but after hooking the same speakers up to the AXR-100 the sound quality improvement was immediately obvious. Warm, crisp and clear. I mostly stream Spotify through a Chromecast HDMI (using a J-Tech Audio Extractor to split the digital audio and connect it via optical to the AXR-100. I also have a Pro-Ject turntable and find the AXR phono input to be better than using the turntable's built-in phono pre-amp. I'm delighted with my purchase, which I made after a detailed discussion about speaker selection and impedance with a Crutchfield support specialist. Overall wonderful experience.. my next hi-fi purchase will certainly be via Crutchfield!

Let me first say this is no way directed at Crutchfield they are awesome I purchased a Cambridge Audio Axr100 after researching for quite sometime I have always owned and loved the performance of my vintage Pioneer and Marantz equipment but figured I'd try some modern equipment what a disappointment the sound stage is good but the bass is very flat and shallow midrange is shallow as well highs are flat as well 100 watts per channel well the bass mids and highs sound it's best with this reciever at 1/4 volume and loses as volume is raised eventually sounding absolutely terrible the modern comfort features are nice if you're looking to drive a pair of bookshelf speakers this reciever may be a good fit driving larger loudspeakers this ain't it by the way I tried four different pairs of speakers I will be hooking my Pioneer SX-3900 back up and use this reciever in my bedroom or regift it for Christmas

Cons: Sound disappointing

The number of digital inputs, wattage, A+B speakers, and reputation are what sold me on the AXR100. I briefly used it to power my 20+ year old PSB Alphas but after realizing they were having issues of their own, I replaced them with Klipsch RP-160M and am bi-wiring them with the AXR100 Two things kept me from giving this 5 stars: 1) The remote is not great. It's functional. It even controls a CD player I don't have. It's poorly laid out, not backlight, and could be done so much better. 2) The volume resets at every power off. I know this is a protection mechanism, but it's annoying. I contacted Cambridge Audio and they said there is no way around this behavior. It's not horrible behavior -- just annoying. Overall, though, the amp certainly seems capable enough and the sound is so much better than the 24 year Harmon Kardon it replaced. I didn't get enough of a comparison between the PSBs and the Klipsch speakers to feel like I know the amp's character, but I definitely enjoy the Cambridge/Klipsch combination. They've made a great stereo image/soundstage in my office/studio. I didn't realize how much my previous setup had aged and deteriorated until I really sat and listened to this new setup.

Pros: Digital inputs, speaker A+B outs, power and warmth

Cons: Remote design, volume reset at power off

The Cambridge AXR100 (R100) was purchased as a separated stereo system within my 5.2 surround system. I wanted to use my same front speakers for both systems so I have a passive A/B switch between the R100 and my surround amp. To put the stereo system in perspective, here is the set-up: The speakers are GoldenEar Triton 3+, the subwoofer is GoldenEar Phase 4, DVD/blueray is Oppo UDP 203, turntable is a Raga P6 with Ania MC cartridge, and I stream with the Audioengine b1. All are connected to the R100. I wanted to simplify my setup and find a component with clean, neat design that did not cost a fortune. The R100 has all the features I need, has great reviews, and looks amazing. If you're wondering how Cambridge kept the cost down without cutting all its features, let me introduce you to Cambridge's version of the universal remote: Weighing in at little more than its AAA batteries, the remote, which can operate several Cambridge components, is the antithesis of the Cambridge design. With over 41 buttons (with 23 of them for an entirely different unit) all printed with blue or white on black buttons on a black remote, it looks like it belongs to a totally different company. This is not a remote that can be used in dim light. On the plus side, all features of the R100 (and apparently their CD player as well) can be accessed from the remote. It's too bad they couldn't have added a bit to the cost and made a remote that compliments their design.

Pros: Looks. Sound. Features. Cost

Cons: Remote. Yikes! Where did that come from!

Bought unit for a bedroom /home office. Speakers: Pair Klispch RP 500M & pair Klipsch RB 61 II and Cambridge Audio Minx X201 sub woofer Yamaha WXC-50 Streamer with Yamaha MusicCast Software app. I have a Schiit Loki equalizer between the Yamaha & the Amp. Need more upper mids to hear voices better. Wanted 4 speakers, Radio, Blue Tooth & digital inputs. Did not need HDMI. Allows for options later. I have a living room system build around an Outlaw receiver. The sound is very good at lower volume. The room is not that big. I use Tidal for music and MusicCast for Internet radio, BBC & classical. Runs cool. Over the air radio is good though I am 15 miles from a city. The remote is OK. Need the eyes of a Peregrine falcon to read the symbols and one section has blue lettering on a black ground which would challenge the aforementioned bird. Odd the there is no specific controls for Bass, Treble and Balance on either the front panel or remote. Need to access the menu. Very happy the the Amp.

Pros: Sounds great. Does what you need for a Stereo system. Add speakers and a Streamer and enjoy

Cons: No discrete Bass, Treble or Balance controls on panel or remote. Need to access menu. Lettering on remote requires super human eye sight.

I have owned my AXR100 for just about a year now and am very happy with my purchase. I was looking for good sound on a budget and the AXR100 really hits that spot. I currently use it with a Bluesound Node connected with RCA cables for streaming music and my tv connected with a toslink cable. Music sounds very natural and detailed. In my opinion, this receiver would fall into the neutral range. The tv sounds great too. Of course it doesn't do surround but I'm ok with that. Plenty of power to drive my speakers. For my listening tastes I'm usually at a little less than half volume. I look forward to eventually upgrading my speakers, which I'm sure will make my system sound even better. I also like that it has a built in phono stage. As my budget permits I would like to take up vinyl as an added hobby or maybe return to CDs with a CD player. I miss the days of going to the record store and looking through the rows of available music.

I bought this receiver to pair with ELAC Uni-Fi BS U5 Slim speakers. I really like the combo. The Elac speakers are rated at 4 ohms and so need a decent amount of power. The thing I like about this receiver is that it is no frills, basic and powerful. I listen to vinyl, CDs and occasionally the radio. My personal collections sound great and I now hear details I had not heard before. The Bluetooth easily connects to my iPhone. And I find it has a very good range, unlike some of the other reviewers. Lastly, it just looks awesome. I also bought Cambridge Audio AXC35 CD player. It has good sound, shares the same remotes as the receiver and the two look great together. Zac was very helpful in my making my decision.

This Cambridge stereo receiver feels solid, looks good and sounds fabulous with my ELAC bookshelf speakers. Price point is spot on for its quality. Crutchfield shipping was secure and fast, I received the item within 2 days of placing my order. Highly recommended product and vendor!

After a Sansui 5000A and a Denon AV 1602, I got a Cambridge AXR100..big difference in technology over fifty-one years!. I like my records, CDs', run four speakers and a sub so having power is great and everything is very smooth. I've only had it up and running for a week but so far so good and I'm happy. Big shoutout to advisors Calvin and Mike for their help with my purchase and setup..thanks guys!

Pros: Smooth, powerful sound and off the charts customer service

Cons: None so far
