The number of integrated amps and stereo receivers that have built-in streaming capabilities has reached critical mass. That means you have a lot of great options for a just-add-speakers stereo sound system.

What is a streaming amp?

Stereo amps and receivers are the heart of countless two-channel hi-fi systems. They are actually two components in one.

The amplifier section generates the wattage needed to drive one or two pairs of bookshelf or floor-standing speakers.

The preamplifier section has inputs and switching for different source components, like turntables, CD players, TVs, streamers, and more. The preamp also includes all-important volume control, and sometimes balance and tone controls.

Stereo receivers are distinguished by having an AM/FM tuner — check out our shopping tips for stereo receivers. To learn more about integrated amps and see some of our favorite models, check out our shopping guide to integrated amps.

NAD C700 V2 Streaming integrated amplifier

A streaming amp lets you just add your favorite passive speakers to listen to a vast library of online music.

You don't need a separate component for streaming with these amps. They have built-in Wi-Fi and support for different streaming services, like Spotify, TIDAL, Amazon Music, Qobuz, and others. A lot of them support Apple AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Roon (subscription required), and other wireless multi-room audio ecosystems like Sonos, BluOS, and HEOS.

With a streaming amp, all you need is a nice pair of speakers and you have tons of music at your fingertips.

Common features

You want to make sure you've got all the features you want. Some amps are streamlined for a specific use while others let you connect a wide range of sources, speakers, and other components.

Wireless streaming compatibility

Confirm that the streaming amp you're buying supports the streaming services and sources you'll be playing. And if you want to be able to group the amp with a wireless multi-room system, make sure your amp supports the streaming platform you'll be using.

Cambridge Audio Evo 150 Streaming integrated amplifier back

This streaming amp has a range of analog and digital inputs including balanced XLR and phono, plus terminals for two pairs of speakers.

Wired connections

If you'll be adding sources like a turntable, CD player, TV, or what have you, make sure that your amp has the right types of analog and digital inputs to connect them. You'll want an amp with a balanced XLR input if you have a high-performance source with that type of output.

Amplifier outputs

If you want to power two pairs of speakers, look for amps that have a second set of speaker terminals. Some amps have a stereo preamp output that lets you connect an external power amplifier to drive additional speakers.

Make sure your amp has a headphone output with either a full-sized jack or 3.5mm jack if you like to take speakers out of the equation and listen in your favorite pair of cans.

And if you need to feel the low frequencies that your stereo speakers are simply incapable of reproducing, get an amp that has an output for a powered subwoofer.

NAD M10 V3 streaming amp with full-color touchscreen

Full-color touchscreen control is becoming more common in streaming amps.

Display

Some streamers have displays that show track and playback info. Some even have full-color screens that show album art or can be customized to show different info or even virtual VU meters. And streaming amps with touchscreen control are also becoming more common.

Two-way Bluetooth

Models with two-way Bluetooth let you stream wirelessly to the amp from your compatible device as well as from the amp to a pair of Bluetooth headphones. That can be super-convenient, like for late-night listening without a tangle of wires.

Room correction

Amps with built-in room correction uses a mic that reads your listening space for acoustic interferences — like furniture and sound-reflective walls — and automatically applies EQ adjustments to get the best sound. You might prefer the way it sounds after correction, but if you don't you can simply turn it off.

Our top streaming amp picks

We tried to include something for everyone in our list — from a modern, compact, wall-mountable amp with just two wired inputs to attractive tabletop models with connections for more than half a dozen different wired sources and two pairs of speakers.

Let's dive in and take a closer look at our picks. Hopefully this list will help you figure out exactly what you're looking for in a streaming amplifier.

NAD C 3050 BluOS-D streaming integrated amplifier

Best vintage-style — NAD C 3050 BluOS-D

NAD created this modern iteration of their classic 3030 amp from the 1970s to help celebrate their 50th anniversary. The C 3050 BluOS-D's vintage-styled exterior features glowing analog VU meters and other classic cosmetic touches. But advanced amplification and a built-in high-performance DAC give it modern precision and detail. And it has versatile network streaming and wireless multi-room audio via the pre-installed MDC2 BluOS-D module.

This amp has wired inputs for a turntable, a compatible TV, and other analog and digital sources. It can power two pairs of passive speakers and has an output for a powered subwoofer.

In a demonstration at Crutchfield at the time of its release, the C 3050 impressed me with its effortless clear sound. And I love the old-school front panel control: bass, treble, left/right balance, source and speaker selection — just like on the amps I grew up with.

Best for high-res streaming — Cambridge Audio Evo 150 SE

Cambridge Audio's Evo 150 SE is a thoroughly modern component. You can see that with one look at its sleek, elegant form, dominated by its large full-color screen and single oversized volume knob. Like its customer-favorite predecessor, it's got 150 watts per channel of cutting-edge Class D amplification, versatile streaming options and wired connections, and pristine digital decoding. An upgraded dual op-amp graces this SE version, for a super-low noise floor.

It benefits from Cambridge's stellar StreamMagic app, which stands at the top of the heap in my book — and I've tried a lot. Yamaha R-N600A streaming stereo receiver

Best stereo receiver for streaming — Yamaha R-N600A

The Yamaha R-N600A earned its popularity thanks to its solid 80 watts per channel of clean power, two pairs of speaker outputs, connections for all sorts of sources, and streaming capabilities built around Yamaha's excellent MusicCast app.

The R-N600A also works with AirPlay 2 and has Bluetooth as another easy streaming option. Wired inputs let you connect a turntable, computer, and other analog and digital sources. The built-in AM/FM tuner makes it technically a stereo receiver rather than an integrated amp, which I love, since I listen to my favorite radio station — Charlottesville's WTJU — every day.

Popular questions customers ask

An integrated amplifier is two components in one ù a power amp that drives your speakers and a preamplifier for your music source components. The preamp lets you select your sources and control the volume. An integrated amp is similar to a receiver, except it doesn't have a radio tuner built in.

A good rule of thumb is to stay within the power range of your speakers but look toward the upper end of that range. More power is a good thing ù it gives you stronger bass and clearer, louder sound, especially in larger rooms.

Yes! There are a few ways you can do that. Most of our integrated amplifiers have a dedicated "phono" input for hooking up your turntable directly. You can also use a separate phono preamp to connect a turntable to any standard audio input. And some turntables have a phono preamp built in, so you don't need a special connection on your amp.

Some integrated amplifiers have built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for streaming music from your phone or other device. Streaming directly to your integrated amplifier over Wi-Fi is a solution we love ù the music doesn't stop if you carry your phone into another room. WiFi equipped integrated amps also offer built-in support for popular music services like Spotify and Qobuz, and some even let you stream music to compatible speakers or components in other rooms.

Yes. You can connect a TV to your integrated amp just as you would another audio source. This will give you much better sound than your TV's built-in speakers. A select few integrated amps have HDMI inputs for hooking up a TV, but you'll find more options with optical digital inputs that can be used for this purpose.
