iDatalink Direct Replacement car stereo packages

Car stereo installation — revolutionized

iDatalink Maestro APX™ installation packages from ADS open up a new world of car stereo installation for a lot of drivers who have never before had that option. These installation packages create a new approach to aftermarket car stereo integration.

I

n my 25 years at Crutchfield, I've witnessed the evolution of the car stereo: from tapes to CDs, from analog controls to touch-screen digital displays. But one of the most profound evolutions I've seen has been the increasing integration of the car stereo into vehicle dashboards.

In the past, car stereos could be easily removed, and a new one fitted by using a simple wiring harness and a trim kit. That scenario is now the exception, rather than the rule. For many popular late-model vehicles, changing the stereo requires relocating climate and other controls to make room for the chassis of a conventional single- or double-DIN stereo. This complicated and expensive approach has made many car owners hesitant to replace their car stereo. And that's IF replacement is an option at all. For many newer cars, the factory stereo could not be replaced. Until now.

iDatalink Maestro APX installation kits and Direct Replacement stereos

Automotive Data Solutions (ADS) is revolutionizing the path to upgrading your car stereo with the development of iDatalink Maestro APX installation kits. These kits are designed to work exclusively as part of a package that includes new JVC and Kenwood Direct Replacement modular stereos. With this combo, you'll retain your factory aesthetics and features while offering the improved performance of an aftermarket stereo.

Kenwood Excelon DAX1050XR

This Kenwood Excelon DAX1050XR Direct Replacement stereo features a "floating" 10" screen, with the receiver's electronics contained in a hide-away module.

How does it work?

The magic is behind the dash. Conventional car stereos are built into a single 2" or 4" tall chassis, with controls or a touchscreen in the front and the "guts" behind the screen. To install these stereos, you need space for the chassis to fit into the dash at the location where you want the touchscreen to be. But with many late-model vehicles, there's no room behind the dash for the stereo to fit into.

Direct Replacement car stereos get around this problem by splitting the stereo into two parts: an 8" or 10" touchscreen display, and a modular "black box" that you'll locate in a different location. With a Direct Replacement stereo, you'll expand your sound system and enjoy the latest infotainment options while keeping your original factory dash panels.

ADS's iDatalink Maestro APX kits complement Direct Replacement stereos by providing the hardware you need to seamlessly install the new stereo in your specific vehicle, along with vehicle-specific wiring and connectors necessary to tap into the factory wiring without cutting or splicing.

This APX-S8-FO1 kit lets you install a Direct Replacement stereo in many popular Ford models.

A perfect fit, engineered for your vehicle

Each iDatalink Maestro APX kit accounts for the specific behind-the-dash structure of the vehicles for which it's designed. The kit's specially designed brackets and mounting hardware let you install the hide-away box behind the touchscreen display, in another location behind the dash, or even in the kick panel. It all depends on the vehicle — the folks at iDatalink have figured it out for you.

Direct Replacement stereos come in two screen sizes, 8" and 10", and the mounting methods for the screens vary depending on the size and vehicle. APX kits for Direct Replacement stereos with 8" screens mount the new display in place of the factory stereo's display, like in the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe pictured below.

Kits for Direct Replacment stereos with 10" displays maintain your original dash layout and "float" the new screen in front of the location previously used by the factory 4" or 8.4" screen, retaining the original controls and dash trim. You can see how this larger screen sits in front of the original 4" screen of the 2014 Ford Explorer pictured below.

iDatalink Maestro – the brains of the system

While the APX kits provide all the hardware and connectors you need to get up and running, there’s still another very important piece you’ll need for the installation. That’s an iDatalink Maestro RR module or Maestro RR2 interface module. These advanced car integration modules smoothly translate information between your vehicle and the radio.

RR and RR2 modules speak your car's language, so your factory system can communicate with your new receiver and vice versa. With them, you'll retain factory features like steering wheel controls, climate controls, infotainment settings, and more.

Electronic integration with your car

In the old days, car stereos operated independently of the rest of your car. When you replaced the factory stereo, it was a simple matter to wire your new stereo to a connector, plug it in, and enjoy the improved sound. But now, most new cars integrate the stereo into the car's electronics, so retaining features like steering wheel controls, climate controls, and more is important.

APX packages are designed to integrate electronically with your specific vehicle type. Depending on your vehicle, you'll receive vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, antenna adapters, and most everything you'll need to integrate with your car. Once everything is installed, it'll all operate just the way it did before.
