...We'll start with the important features all 2024 Sony BRAVIA TVs share, then focus on what sets them apart.
Major TV manufacturers like Sony update their product lines every year. Sometimes the new TVs offer major technological improvements, while other years the enhancements are subtle.
Usually, series names stay the same year after year, with a letter at the end that indicates a new model. But this year, Sony shook things up with a whole new lineup. They also simplified their naming conventions for a clearer-than-ever picture of that lineup. It’s as simple as 3, 7, 8, and 9.
The main difference between the different series is the type of lighting technology they use, and it’s not always in the order you’d expect — Sony surprised us this year by making their flagship model a Mini LED TV instead of an OLED. When we saw it in action, we understood why.
We'll dig into the specifics for the whole Sony lineup below. You can also learn more about the difference between backlighting technologies in our OLED vs LED TV article.
All of the 2024 Sony TVs we carry are 4K TVs with support for HDR. They're also all "smart" TVs, with pre-installed apps for streaming services like Netflix® and built-in voice control with Google Assistant.
Below are a few other key features shared by all our 2024 Sony BRAVIA TVs:
- TRILUMINOS PRO Display technology for a wider, more natural color palette
- access to exclusive content on SONY PICTURES CORE
- Apple AirPlay® 2 and Google Cast for wireless streaming from compatible devices
- Game Menu for easy access to settings including screen size, black equalizer, and motion blur
- support for HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG High Dynamic Range content
- support for enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC)
Each series will offer additional features beyond this. They can include more powerful processing, a better refresh rate, and more advanced gaming features.
Let's dig in.

BRAVIA 3
BRAVIA 3 is Sony’s entry-level model this year. It uses the most basic backlight in the lineup and delivers a sharp 4K picture, plus loads of smart features at a great price.
- Direct LED backlight with frame dimming
- native refresh rate: 60Hz
- four 2.0b HDMI inputs
- X-Balanced Speaker system with support for Dolby Atmos
- available in 43”, 50”, 55”, 65”, 75”, and 85” sizes

BRAVIA 7
BRAVIA 7 uses a more advanced form of LED backlighting called “Mini LED.” This technology packs in thousands of tiny lights and controls them with incredible precision for greater detail and contrast than a standard LED TV can achieve.
- Mini LED backlight powered by XR Backlight Master Drive for precise brightness control (local dimming)
- XR Processor uses powerful real-time processing based on a human perspective for a true-to-life picture
- native refresh rate: 120Hz
- 4 HDMI inputs (two 2.0b, two 2.1)
- Acoustic Multi-Audio system uses sound-positioning tweeters at the back of the TV so the sound follows the action
- IMAX Enhanced certification for improved performance with IMAX Enhanced 4K/HDR content
- studio calibrated modes for Netflix, Prime Video (with future firmware update), and SONY PICTURES CORE
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) reduces stutter and frame tearing for smoother gameplay
- available in 55”, 65”, 75”, and 85” sizes

BRAVIA 8
BRAVIA 8 is Sony’s lone 2024 OLED TV series. OLED panels don't use a separate backlight layer to illuminate their screens and instead are able to light up (or turn off) each pixel on the screen independently. The result is a super-detailed picture with incredible contrast and deep, true blacks.
- self-illuminating OLED display panel produces near-infinite contrast
- pixel-level dimming enables each of the panel's 8.3 million pixels to brighten, dim, or power off completely, for exceptional detail and absolute black
- XR Processor uses powerful real-time processing based on a human perspective for a true-to-life picture
- native refresh rate: 120Hz
- 4 HDMI inputs (two 2.0b, two 2.1)
- Acoustic Surface Audio+ makes the entire screen a speaker
- IMAX Enhanced certification for improved performance with IMAX Enhanced 4K/HDR content
- studio calibrated modes for Netflix, Prime Video (with future firmware update), and SONY PICTURES CORE
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) reduces stutter and frame tearing for smoother gameplay
- Auto HDR Tone Mapping for PS5
- available in 55”, 65”, and 77” sizes

BRAVIA 9
BRAVIA 9 is Sony’s top-of-the-line model this year, and — as mentioned — it’s not an OLED. Its Mini LED backlight is similar to the technology used in Sony's ultra-bright professional movie mastering monitor.
We saw it demoed next to a standard Mini LED set when Sony visited us recently. The top layer of each TV was removed, so we just saw the LEDs in each backlight. In scene after scene, the BRAVIA 9 displayed a wider, more precise range of light and dark — sometimes enough to tell what the real image was, while the other TV’s backlight just showed a vague shape.

- studio calibrated modes for Netflix, Prime Video (with future firmware update), and SONY PICTURES CORE
- X-Wide Angle technology maintains accurate color and contrast when viewing from the sides
