  4. Best ultra-short throw projector — Leica Cine 1

But first, I’ll get into some basics that can help you find the best projector for you.

Projector setups used to feel out of reach for those of us without the darkened space of a dedicated home theater room. These days you can find one for almost any room or budget, but it still helps to have a little basic knowledge before you leap in.

Projector shopping tips

We have a great selection of home theater projectors from Epson, Sony, Optoma, and other top brands. You can get a more in-depth look at projector features and specs in our complete projector buying guide, but here are some basic questions to get you started.

Where is it going?

Projectors can be ceiling-mounted or placed on a stand. And ultra short throw models are designed to go almost directly under your screen.

If you can’t control the light level in the room, you’ll want a projector that gets bright enough to compensate for that. And if you’re lugging it out to the backyard or beyond, you’ll also want to consider the size and weight.

If you’re using it outside, we suggest getting a projector that offers at least 2,000 lumens.

Lamp vs. laser

Most projectors use either a lamp or a laser light source. Lamp-based projectors have bulbs that will get dimmer over time and need to be replaced. Laser projectors tend to cost more up front but deliver the same brightness for years — virtually maintenance-free.

How important is resolution?

Most of our projectors are still 1080p, and they offer an economical way to get a big, bright picture. You can get a fully feature-packed 1080p model for a lot less than a native 4K projector.

Some projectors can display a resolution higher than their native resolution using something called “pixel-shifting.” These projectors display parts of a frame very rapidly one after the other, with the pixels shifted diagonally. Your eyes perceive it as a single fluid image containing all of the original detail in the 4K video signal. They are a great budget-friendly alternative to native 4K.

Projectors listed as “native 4K” are going to deliver the most detail, but they’ll have a price tag to match. If you are going really big with your screen, it’s probably going to be worth it.

Consider what extras you want

Not all projectors include speakers, so you should plan for a sound system. If that’s not in the budget, or you just want an all-in-one device, make sure your chosen model includes built-in speakers. Some projectors also offer smart features like a built-in streaming platform. Check out our best portable lifestyle projectors article for some of our favorite projectors that feature both.

You can project against a wall, but for the best picture quality we suggest saving some room in the budget for a screen. Check out our projector screen buying guide for info on that.

Top projector picks for 2026

We sell a $36,000 Sony Projector that is arguably "the best." But even if you had the budget for it, that bad boy isn't going to work that well for small spaces or backyard movie nights. So here's my short list of best picks for some common scenarios.

Epson Home LS11000 home theater projector

Customer favorite — Epson Home Cinema LS11000

Epson projectors are very popular, and the LS11000 is a particular favorite of Crutchfield customers. It delivers a big, bright picture as well as HDR and 10-bit color processing for dramatic color and contrast.

Details

  • native resolution: 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels)
  • Epson PRO-UHD™ 4K Enhancement Technology uses pixel-shifting to provide a more detailed, higher-resolution image (3840 x 2160)
  • horizontal and vertical lens shift allow you to get a perfectly true image from off-center positions
  • 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs support 4K/120Hz video signals and enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC)
  • light output: 2,500 lumens (multi-array laser diode)

A wallet-friendly alternative

You can save some money with the popular Epson Home Cinema 2350. This lamp-based model uses a less advanced form of pixel-shifting, but it offers built-in streaming and costs about 1/3 of the price.

Sony VPL-VW325ES Native 4K home theater projector

A 4K projector for your dedicated home theater — JVC DLA-NZ800

JVC projectors have long been favorites with videophiles, and these new 8K-capable models are among their finest ever. The DLA-NZ800 sits in a sweet spot — offering precision optics, a bright laser light source, and the option for 8K — at about half the price of the ultra-premium, flagship 'NZ900.

Details

  • native resolution: 4K (three 0.69" D-ILA panels with 4096 x 2160 pixels each)
  • 4-phase 8K e-shiftX yields an 8K projected image (over 35 million pixels)
  • 17-element, 15-group all-glass 65mm lens provides excellent sharpness and edge-to-edge focus
  • light output: 2,700 lumens (BLU-Escent laser diode/phosphor light engine)

A wallet-friendly alternative

Happily, JVC has a robust lineup of 4K projectors. The 'NZ500 is their most compact and budget-friendly native 4K model. It uses the same high-quality D-ILA imaging panels and a less-bright, 2,000-lumen version of their proprietary BLU-Escent laser light source.

The Epson Home Cinema 980 is another great option for a backyard setup. Its lamp-based light source is slightly brighter than the JVC, but it lacks the pixel-shifting that enables a 4K projected image.

Popular questions customers ask

It depends on your projector's light source. The bulbs in lamp-based projectors dim over time. They will likely need to be replaced after about 2,000-5,000 hours of use. This is about 4-5 years if you use it only occasionally for event viewing. If it’s your main TV, it could be less than a year and a half before you need to buy a new bulb.

Laser projectors last up to 30,000 hours with regular use — about 15-20 years — with no deterioration in quality.

Most of our projectors are still 1080p, and they offer an economical way to get a big, bright picture. You can get a fully feature-packed 1080p model for a lot less than a native 4K projector.

Some projectors can display a resolution higher than their native resolution using something called “pixel-shifting.” They are a great budget-friendly alternative to native 4K.

Native 4K projectors deliver the most detail, but they'll have a price to match.

Projectors are split into two categories, depending on their light source. Lamp-based projectors have a bulb that dims over time until it needs to be replaced. Laser projectors tend to cost more up front, but they deliver the same brightness for years — virtually maintenance-free. There is a lot of variety within each category and finding the right model for you depends on your room characteristics and budget.

You can technically project a picture on a wall or sheet, but to get the best picture possible, you should plan to get a high-quality screen in addition to a projector. You’ll likely need a sound system, too. Many projectors have no sound capability, and ones that do often have only tiny speakers.

You can! But there are some things you need to consider. Projectors typically have fewer inputs than TVs, and many lack any type of built-in tuner or internet capability. Projectors also have some different installation requirements, like throw distance. Ultra Short Throw (UST) projectors are installed almost directly below the screen, so they are a great option for people looking to replace a TV with a projector system.

Thanks Emily, excellent analysis. Easy to see that you spent quite a while on your coverage. Something I miss is which projectors show 3D films. That OK since we can find that info in the Crutchfield specs. The Epson 3800 we ordered from Crutchfield shows 3D. Merry Christmas, Tom B.
