P

owered speakers make it easy to get true stereo sound — no amplifier or receiver required. That's because their amplification and connections are built in, making them an easy solution for great sound.

Once the province of recording studios and computer desktops, powered speakers have evolved to include home models that look and sound like good old-fashioned passive loudspeakers and include connections for all kinds of sources. That means they're great when space is tight — like in an apartment or dorm room.

Features to look for

Most powered speakers with a phono input let you directly connect a turntable. It's also a good idea to consider other features that let you add sources and output options.

Wired input options

Models with an optical input let you connect a TV or a compatible streamer or CD player. For seamless integration with your TV's sound, look for a pair of speakers with an HDMI ARC input.

Look for models with a USB-A, USB-B, or USB-C input if you want to play music from storage drives, computers, and other compatible devices.

Back panel connections on powered speakers with a phono input

The primary speaker is the one with all the connections, while the secondary speaker just has speaker wire terminals.

The stereo RCA phono input on most powered speakers only works with turntables fitted with a moving magnet cartridge, and is switchable to line-level for use with a different source.

Wireless options

All of our picks have built-in Bluetooth for easy wireless streaming from smartphones, tablets, computers, and other compatible devices.

If you want high-res streaming, look for models with Wi-Fi and Ethernet network connectivity.

And if you get a model that offers wireless stereo pairing, you can keep cord clutter to a minimum while maximizing placement options.

Output options

A headphone jack is nice if you need to listen privately sometimes — that's also my favorite way to hear every detail in the mix of great records.

And pretty much all powered speakers with a built-in phono preamp also have a mono RCA wired output for a powered subwoofer. That's great if you want to get more substantial bass and allow your speakers' built-in amplification to perform more efficiently.

Our top picks

We've relied on our customers' and employees' experience to select our top vinyl-friendly powered speakers to accommodate a range of needs, from small desktop setups to larger listening room situations. All of these models can provide high-fidelity stereo sound, so that you can get the best sound from your favorite records.

Klipsch The Nines powered speakers with phono input

Best vintage-style — Klipsch The Nines

The Nines are Klipsch's largest powered speakers and I'm glad they chose a "heritage-inspired" design that would look right at home in a mid-century modern home like ours. I love the lively sound Klipsch's signature horn-loaded design kicks out. When I had a chance to hear these speakers demoed at Crutchfield, I found myself lingering, playing track after track from my favorites.

I'm not sure I'd want to add a subwoofer — with their 8" woofers and substantial amplification, The Nines deliver substantial low-end frequencies on their own.

Details

  • 1" titanium tweeter with Tractrix® horn
  • 8" high-excursion woofer
  • bi-amplified design delivers 100 watts to each woofer and 20 watts to each tweeter
  • frequency response: 34-25,000 Hz (± 3dB)
  • Bluetooth 5.0 for music streaming via a compatible device
  • analog stereo RCA input with phono switch and 3.5mm aux input

  • mono RCA output for connecting a powered subwoofer

ELAC Debut ConneX Adsum powered speakers for turntable

Most stylish — ELAC Debut ConneX Adsum

For an elegant, simple vinyl setup, the Debut ConneX Adsum powered stereo speakers from ELAC are our top pick. Technically, they're identical to the Debut Connex DCB41, but this version includes möbius-like metal stands and cosmetic design from celebrated Brooklyn clothiers Adsum. They look very stylish flanking an uptown turntable.

Their smooth, listenable sound has impressed some discerning customers and our video team. When I tested this pair at home, I was pleasantly astonished by the full, clear sound. And their bass response goes lower than most powered speakers of this size.

  • 3/4" soft dome tweeter with custom waveguide
  • 4-1/2" polypropylene long-throw woofer
  • 50 watts x 2 delivered by amplifier in active speaker
  • frequency response: 50-25,000 Hz
  • Bluetooth with high-quality aptX encoding
  • stereo RCA input with switchable phono preamp
  • optical, HDMI ARC, and USB Type-B digital inputs
  • proprietary XBass circuit enhances bass output (defeatable)
  • mono output for a powered subwoofer

Kanto YU4 powered stereo speakers with a turntable input

Best value — Kanto YU4

I love the way Kanto uses streamlined designs and high-quality components to make affordable speakers with really nice sound. Our customers love the Kanto YU4 monitors for their flexible connections and warm, inviting soundstage — with an exciting midrange, and non-fatiguing high frequencies. They also love their modern-yet-classic look.

I loved what I heard when I auditioned the passive version of these speakers in my home. And they're tailor-made to work with a variety of good-looking, solidly built Kanto speaker stands that help you get them positioned at ear level — they're what I use in my living room.

  • 1" silk dome tweeter
  • 4" Kevlar® woofer

  • frequency response: 60-20,000 Hz

  • analog stereo RCA input with phono switch, 3.5mm aux input, and 2 Toslink optical digital audio inputs

Onkyo GX-30ARC powered stereo speakers with a turntable input

Most versatile — Onkyo GX-30ARC

The GX-30ARC powered speakers are compact enough to work as your desktop speakers and can also fill a medium-sized room with sound. They'll make your vinyl sound great, and you can use the HDMI ARC input for high-quality 2-channel TV sound.

These speakers use bi-amped power tailored to each individual driver for accurate sound. And Onkyo's proprietary DSP (digital signal processing) helps create an impressive stereo soundstage for such small speakers. You can connect a computer or other compatible device using the USB-C input. And a mono RCA preamp output lets you connect an external powered subwoofer.

  • 3/4" silk dome tweeter
  • 4" paper cone mid/bass woofer
  • 25 watts x 2 amplification built into main speaker
  • Bluetooth 5.3 for music streaming via a compatible device
  • analog stereo RCA input with phono switch and 3.5mm aux input
  • Toslink optical and USB-C digital audio inputs
  • mono RCA output for connecting a powered subwoofer

Klipsch R50-PM powered speakers with phono input

Biggest bang for your buck — Klipsch R50-PM

The R-50PM is the premier powered bookshelf speaker system in Klipsch's great-sounding, budget-friendly Reference line. They can fill a medium-to-large-sized room with the engaging, substantial, high-fidelity sound Klipsch has been known for since 1946.

That get-up-and-go sound and the versatile input bank give this powered speaker pair an excellent bang-for-buck ratio — the "right" speaker has ample connections on its rear panel for adding a turntable, CD player, TV, computer, and more. And there's an output for a powered subwoofer if you want to add rumble and let the built-in amplification deliver more juice to the R50-PM's drivers.

Details

  • 1" LTS (Linear Travel Suspension) aluminum diaphragm tweeter with Tractrix® horn
  • 5-1/4" spun-copper TCP (thermoformed crystalline polymer) woofer
  • 60 watts x 2 amplification built into "right" speaker
  • frequency response: 55-20,000 Hz (±3dB)
  • Bluetooth 5.0 for music streaming via a compatible device
  • analog stereo RCA input with phono switch and 3.5mm aux input
  • Toslink optical and USB Type-B digital audio inputs
  • mono RCA output for connecting a powered subwoofer

Technics CX700 powered speakers with phono input

Best with built-in streaming — Technics SC-CX700

The SC-CX700 speaker system from Technics can deliver true high-res stereo sound all by itself. It also lets you add digital and analog wired sources, including a turntable. Any way you use it, it sounds fantastic. And the suede-like microfiber wrap on the cabinets looks and feels cool and unique too. I love how this system can fit almost anywhere — since each enclosure's bi-amplification is built in, all each needs is an AC power connection.

When you connect the stereo pair with the included Ethernet cable, you'll get up to a full 24-bit/192kHz resolution from your digital sources, but they also sound great topping out at 24-bit/96kHz when you pair them wirelessly for more flexible placement.

You can also assign either speaker as right or left, so you can put the primary speaker (the one with all the connections) near your sources. Front-firing ports help deliver impressive bass and also allow you to place the speakers closer to the wall.

  • 3/4" ring-type tweeter
  • 6" woofer
  • 60 watts for each woofer and 40 watts for each tweeter
  • works with Google Cast, Apple AirPlay, and Spotify Connect
  • Bluetooth 5.1 built in
  • stereo RCA phono input for a turntable with moving magnet cartridge
  • 3.5mm stereo aux input
  • optical, HDMI ARC, and USB-C digital inputs
  • mono output for a powered subwoofer

Popular questions customers ask

Traditional "passive" stereo speakers need to be connected to an external amplifier with speaker wire. Powered, or "active," speakers have built-in amplifiers so you can plug or stream your sources directly into the speakers. Some powered speakers even have built-in Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth, so all you need to play music is your phone, tablet, or computer.

No. Since the amplifier and preamplifier are built into powered speakers, you won’t need an external amplifier or receiver. That’s one of the most common reasons people buy powered speakers.

Depending on what type of inputs your powered speakers have, you can use pretty much any source — TV, turntable, CD player, tape deck, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and more. Some of the different wired inputs commonly found on powered speakers include RCA, XLR, 3.5mm aux, optical and coaxial digital, HDMI, and USB.

It depends. Powered speakers' internal amplifiers are built to match their power needs. Passive speakers require an external amp, but that also means you can upgrade your amplifier to get even better sound. If you’re working with limited space, and/or want to reduce clutter, powered speakers might be a better choice.

Some powered stereo speaker pairs connect to each other wirelessly, but each still needs to be plugged into an AC power outlet. Other powered speaker pairs share one internal amplifier that is built into the primary (active) speaker, which connects to the secondary (passive) speaker with speaker wire. The only completely wireless powered speakers use batteries, so even they will eventually need to be plugged in to recharge.
