Best power handling on a budget — Kicker CS Series
What you need to know: These are certifiable bang-for-your-buck speakers. If you like it loud, Kicker's CS Series can handle up to 150 watts RMS, which means you can get impressive detail from these bad boys at a high volume (connected to a sufficient power source, of course).

- tweeter: 1/2" polyetherimide (PEI) balanced dome

Something special: Kicker has designed these speakers to fit in more vehicles than ever, which means there's a good chance they'll be a match for yours.

Best high tech speakers at an affordable price — JL Audio C1 Series
What you need to know: If you want something special when you upgrade from your factory speakers, consider the C1 Series and its vibrant yellow design. An injection-molded, mineral-filled polypropylene woofer provides solid punch in the midrange and natural roll-off to the highs. And JL Audio equips this line with an aluminum edge-driven tweeter, a rarity for "entry-level" speakers. Not only does that tweeter design minimize distortion at high volumes, it gives this series its distinctly crisp sound.
The 6-1/2" entry – JL Audio C1-650x:
- power handling: 50 watts RMS (225 watts peak)
- tweeter: 3/4" aluminum edge-driven dome
- sensitivity: 93 dB
- frequency response: 48-24,000 Hz
- mounting depth: 2-1/8”
- cone material: mineral-filled, injection-molded polypropylene
- surround: rubber
Something special: The C1 Series is designed for excellence by the very same team of engineers responsible for JL Audio's flagship C7 Series.
Factory radio friendly? Totally. Their high sensitivity optimizes your factory or aftermarket radio's power for the best sound possible.

Best speakers for detailed sound — Focal Universal Integration Series
What you need to know: Focal has been a longtime favorite of both Crutchfield customers and our Advisors. If subtleties are what you focus on in your music, their Universal Integration Series uses inverted dome tweeters to deliver a wide, lifelike soundstage in your car.
The 6-1/2" entry – Focal ICU 165:
- power handling: 70 watts RMS (140 watts peak)
- tweeter: aluminum/magnesium inverted dome with acoustic horn design
- sensitivity: 93 dB
- frequency response: 60-21,000 Hz
- mounting depth: 1-15/16”
- cone material: polyglass woofer
- surround: with butyl rubber surround
Something special: You'll find many signature Focal innovations at play here like polyglass woofers for strong, accurate playback as well as uniquely designed tweeters that provide a more immersive sound.
Factory radio friendly? Their high sensitivity makes them okay for factory radios, but we recommend powering them with an aftermarket amplifier to truly enjoy that legendary Focal sound.

Best speakers for high-resolution audio — Sony Mobile ES Series
What you need to know: In decades past, Sony's Mobile ES Series has been synonymous with impressive sound quality and customer satisfaction, earning a cult following. Well, Mobile ES is back with a new series of speakers and they live up to their storied reputation with five-star ratings and reviews like this: "LOVE LOVE LOVE these speakers!!"

Factory radio friendly? We recommend aftermarket power, and if you have audiophile tastes, consider Sony's other Mobile ES gear like their Mobile ES Series amps and their Mobile ES Series stereo.
More than speakers: Sony's audiophile gear covers more than just the speakers. Read all about the Mobile ES history and their current offerings in our review of the Mobile ES line.

Best speakers for factory radios — Infinity Reference Series
There are a lot of vehicles out there with low-impedance factory systems, and we count on Infinity to create quality aftermarket alternatives for them. Infinity Reference Series speakers use their "True Four Ohm Impedance" technology to work with 3-ohm systems as well as traditional 4-ohm systems, making them a superior option, whether you're keeping your factory radio or going all aftermarket.
The 6-1/2" entry – Infinity Reference REF607FSL:
- power handling: 55 watts RMS (165 watts peak power)
- tweeter: 1" textile balanced-dome
- sensitivity: 93 dB
- frequency response: 57-21,000 Hz
- mounting depth: 1.78"
- cone material: polypropylene woofer
- surround: rubber
Something special: You'll get favorite Infinity design perks like edge-driven tweeters and Plus One+ woofer cones, which build more surface area into the speakers for better performance.
Factory radio friendly? Absolutely. These speakers are designed to work with both factory and aftermarket systems.

Most affordable Alpine speaker upgrade — Alpine Next-Generation S-Series
Founded only four years after Crutchfield, Alpine's decades in the industry have taught them, like us, how to make great sound possible in more cars. Alpine's S-Series car speakers provide access to all the wonderous detail of your favorite high-resolution audio files at an appealing price.
The 6-1/2" entry – Alpine S2-S65:
- power handling: 80 watts RMS (240 watts peak power)
- tweeter: 1" silk dome
- sensitivity: 88 dB
- frequency response: 55-40,000 Hz
- mounting depth: 2-5/16"
- cone material: polypropylene, glass fiber, mica
- surround: rubber
Something special: Materials-wise, they pack a whole lot of value into this entry-level coaxial set. You'll get silk dome tweeters for smooth, detailed highs and glass-fiber woofers for accurate midbass response.
Factory radio friendly? We recommend aftermarket power to drive these speakers, but even with factory power, their ultra-wide frequency response ensures a detailed, authentic sound.

Best speakers for a low-impedance system — PowerBass OE Series
Some cars use low-impedance speakers to get a little more punch out of the factory radio. If you try to replace 2-ohm speakers with standard 4-ohm aftermarket speakers, you'll notice a significant loss of volume — never a good thing. These specially designed PowerBass solves that problem to the most of your factory power. Install their OE Series speakers in a low-impedance factory system, and you'll hear a big improvement in sound quality over your old factory speakers.
The 6-1/2" entry – PowerBass OE-652:
- impedance: 2 ohms
- power handling: 60 watts RMS (180 watts peak power)
- tweeter: 3/4" aluminum dome
- sensitivity: 88 dB
- frequency response: 58 - 21,000 Hz
- mounting depth: 2-5/16"
- cone material: polypropylene
- surround: rubber
Something special: Their shallow mounting depth ensures they're a fit in a wide variety of vehicles too.
Factory radio friendly? These are designed as factory replacements, and will work great with a low-impedance factory radio system.

Best speakers for a natural sound — Morel Tempo Ultra
What you need to know: Enjoy a refined, softer sound, thanks to the Tempo Ultra Series' silk dome tweeters. High power-handling in this speaker series means you'll be able to enjoy all that luscious, new detail at low volume just as well as high. Morel also enhances the Tempo Ultra coaxial speakers with recessed tweeter placement in the woofer cone. This helps eliminate phase problems and gives you an improved sound stage.
The 6-1/2" entry – Morel Tempo Ultra Integra 602 MKII:
- power handling: 120 watts RMS (220 watts peak power)
- tweeter: 1" silk dome
- sensitivity: 90 dB
- frequency response: 50-22,000 Hz
- mounting depth: 2-11/16"
- cone material: treated paper composite
- surround: rubber
Something special: You'll get impressive performance right out of the box, but customers tell us that these speakers respond exceptionally well to fine-tuning from a digital signal processor.
Factory radio friendly? Given the investment you'll be making in the speakers, we don't recommend running them off a factory radio or even an aftermarket stereo. An aftermarket amp will serve up the sound Morel had in mind for you.

Best speakers, according to many Crutchfield employees — Hertz Mille Pro Series
Internationally known Italian audio brand, Hertz, made a big impression on us when they demoed their speakers at Crutchfield HQ several years ago. Some employees installed Hertz speakers in their vehicles right away, and word quickly spread that they achieved excellent audio quality. Unsurprisingly, more and more of our customers have found Hertz just as satisfying as we have.
The 6-1/2" entry – Hertz MPX 165.3 PRO:
- power handling: 100 watts RMS (200 watts peak power)
- tweeter: 1" cotton/silk dome
- sensitivity: 92 dB
- frequency response: 45-21,500 Hz
- mounting depth: 2-9/16"
- cone material: pressed pulp with cotton fiber
- surround: rubber
Something special: Their Mille PRO Series speakers get rave reviews. One step down from Hertz's Legend Series, this series offers many of Hertz's premium features without the premium price tag.
Factory radio friendly? At 100 watts RMS, these speakers are best run with an aftermarket amplifier.

Best speakers for a powerful audio upgrade — Rockford Fosgate Power Series
Rockford Fosgate builds their Power Series speakers for people who won't put up with inferior sound in their cars. These speakers use advanced design elements to ensure that they'll deliver superior sound in your vehicle for a long, long time. You'll hear accurate midrange and bass reproduction, while the 1" aluminum dome tweeter makes the high frequencies sparkle.
The 6-1/2" entry – Rockford Fosgate T1650:
- power handling: 75 watts RMS (150 watts peak power)
- tweeter: 1" aluminum dome
- sensitivity: 88 dB
- frequency response:44-22,000 Hz
- mounting depth: 2-9/16"
- cone material: carbon fiber-filled IMPP
- surround: rubber
Something special: The lightweight polypropylene cone is reinforced with strong carbon fibers so it'll keep its shape when you're pushing the speaker hard.
Factory radio friendly? Absolutely! That said, these speakers will handle up to 75 watts RMS, so you'll want to use an outboard amplifier to get the most out of them.
If you'd like to find more speakers with high power-handling, use our "Max RMS power" shopping filter.

What's popular vs. what's for you
If you're ready to upgrade, there are a few considerations that should always top your list:
-
How much do you want to spend? Modestly priced speakers offer significant improvement over the ones that come with your car. But if you boost your budget, you'll get even better materials and design for an all-around more accurate sound.
-
What's your favorite music? The tone and style of the music you typically listen to will help you choose based on a speaker's strengths.
-
What fits your car? Unless customization is your thing, you'll need to pick speakers that fit in the factory speaker openings of your car. Use our vehicle selector to refine your choices.
For more detailed information, don't forget to read our car speakers buying guide. And if you need help, contact our Advisors.
Popular questions customers ask
It's simple – you replace your car speakers because you want your music to sound better. Car makers cut corners when it comes to car speakers, and aftermarket speakers use better materials and superior construction to deliver improved sound. Replacing your old speakers is an inexpensive way to get better sound in your car.
Replacing your car's speakers usually involves removing interior panels (doors, dash, rear dash, etc.), unbolting the factory speakers, using a bracket and wiring harness to install replacement speakers, and then reinstalling your panels. As a Crutchfield customer, you'll benefit from our free, vehicle-specific instructions, free wiring harnesses that eliminate splicing, and our friendly, toll-free technical support.
No! Speakers are sold in pairs, and it's common to replace your front speakers first, then later replace your rear speakers. It's a good idea to choose the same brand speakers for front and back, if possible. That way, the tone settings that sound good in the front seat will sound good in the back seat too. Of course, you can replace all your speakers at one time for the most dramatic improvement.
Like we said above, it depends on the RMS power rating of the speakers. Speakers with an upper range of 50 watts RMS or higher will definitely sound better powered by an external amplifier. If you intend to power them with your factory radio, then speakers with a lower RMS power rating and higher efficiency rating will sound best.
Cone size isn't the only factor in determining if a speaker fits your car. Sometimes speakers are too tall or too deep to fit your vehicle. In addition to measuring every speaker model we carry, we also measure thousands of vehicles. That's how we know that we're recommending the right stuff for your car or truck. If a speaker you're interested in isn't listed as fitting, give us a call. Sometimes minor modifications can make it work.

Love to see the Tempo Ultras make the list, not just 'easy to install entry level' speakers. The Morels are the best, most natural, most 'full' sounding speakers I've heard that aren't ridiculously expensive. Can't say enough good about them!

This is the information people should read before purchasing any speakers. I truly appreciate the time and dedication put into this comparison. As you mentioned, some speakers may require Amps or Digital processors to really get the true sound for the speakers, please add which Amps or Digital processors work best for the total package. Thank You Again!

I have a 2019 jeep grand cherokee with 6 speakers no subwoofer. Can you make a suggestion for upgrading the speakers? Also I saw that you have a service to make factory connections prior to the speakers leaving your facility for easier and quicker connections. Would that work for all 6 speakers and what parts would I need?

Hi guys, great article. I just purchased a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan (162TSI) and even though I got the upgraded stereo, I'm not so happy with it. If money wasn't a consideration, what front speakers, amp, and subwoofer would you recommend for best overall sound quality. Thanks so much for any advice. Jon
